    Ok so I start watching this after 11:00pm, all set to make a decaf and have a dessert treat (a mini moon pie) and enjoy a fun video. ALAS! A few screams, dodges in support and weasly movements as you and the audience crawled over the death walk. Finding the ladder gave a breath of OH THANK GAWD , but no, we weren't done yet. More screams as the protagonist risked life and all 4 limbs! Ah then... 'twas over. The last scary thi... uh oh
    Thanks for a fright night, Spencer!! I laughed and screamed through the whole thing. Your tree work prepared you for this, but I was horrified you hadn't snapped a line on to save your agile self! Well enjoy a bit of decent weather and I'll make sure not to grip my moon pie so tightly next time. Chocolate crumbs? Still pretty good. 😂

    Always glad to see the next installment!
    Instead of taking a beating on the excess insulation, can't you use it in the ceiling? I know you talked about blown in (which seems an appropriate method), but I don't see why one couldn't shove this stuff into the shredder and blow it in with the rest, no?
    I've never done it, but i have seen videos of the Atticat in action, seems like it would work unless the roxul is too tough to shred.
    The last barn i wired (20 years ago) i thought the prices were attricious then already. Luckily i have an electrical contractor friend, and he let me rummage in his scrap pile for enough bx cable for what i needed... the problem was all the pieces were 8 to 10ft lengths. Instead of a problem, i used that as an opportunity... i bought more outlets and boxes (because that stuff is super cheap if you buy it in contractor packs from an electrical supply store instead of HD) and just added more outlets to the walls--you can never have too many outlets.... and each becomes a junction box to connect the next piece of wire. I put each wall's outlets on its own breaker, the lights on its own breaker, and the 220v air compressors on their own.
    My lights were 4ft florescent tube fixtures salvaged from the same scrap pile (and matching tubes from his dumpster). Nowadays leds have gotten so cheap online, I'd go that route and save the juice. But those were free, and 2/3 of them lasted 20 years with no repairs other than the odd bulb change (still have dumpster tubes lol) Several ballasts have failed in the last few years. My outdoor lights were also salvaged, mercury halide lights. Also a free ceiling fan from kijiji and a $5.99 jam jar light light over the man door.
    Today i would definitely put outlet boxes on the ceiling by each light fixture, to make for simple replacement if necessary.
    One thing i neglected was outdoor outlets.... that will be rectified on the new shop. You never know when (or which corner if the shop) you will need to plug in a battery charger, a trouble light, or a block heater. Better too many than not enough!
    Keep the momentum going, my friend, you're in the home stretch. You're very lucky to have Melissa willing to help out, obviously not afraid to get her hands dirty. I wish i had one like that, every woman I know would be afraid of breaking a nail!

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Год назад +2

      Thanks for those perspectives! It's cool to hear about your perspectives and to know that we've done some of the same things (I'm totally using receptacle boxes as junction boxes to save on $$stuff). I just may take that idea of yours about the insulation I have left over and run with it ... depends on what I might be able to get for it on FB :) Much appreciated

    How come you never put a vapour barrier between insulation and plywood/osb board. It would’ve added a layer of extra protection for heat loss and condensation

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Год назад

      I thought a lot about that and definitely considered it, but my concern with those plastic layers is that they can trap moisture. Call me old school but I believe in a bit of flow between layers. I'll have a vapor barrier in the ceiling but mainly to keep fluff from falling down
