First time I heard this song was at a high school dance ... The band did a cover version of it and the guitarist was playing it on a telecaster.....don't remember the amp he was using but he was getting this heavy tone on a tele....must of had a fuzz too....I went out and bought a tele after seeing him....saved all summer working at a gas station pumping gas and found one for $150.00 bucks no case....took it home wrapped in a towel until I could afford a case.....should have never sold it....this is back in 1970 Great job😊
Great video and lesson. Saw Mountain live, West broke his high E string during one song and at the end of the song some shouted "you broke a string". West answered "don't need it". He didn't and played the rest of the set without it and still sounded phenomenal.
I Saw Mountain and James Gang the same night at a medium sized Veterans Hall in Southern Oregon. I saw Leslie again in the mid 70s as a solo artist, and in 1980 with West Bruce and Lang, you know Jack Bruce from Cream talk about awsome gigs. Ive been a fan of Leslie from the beginning, I have a Gibson Les Paul Jr sunburst to this day because of Leslie.
Right on Right on...Brotha beg your pardon I was gettin' mine... One of the all-time greatest songs ever written...along with Sweet Emotion, LaGrange and Stranglehold...
It does take two separate SG's to play Mississippi Queen! Some people don't understand thar color matters! The black paints adds just the right grittiness for playing the lead parts while the red paint adds to a more basic rhythmic full tone for the rhythm parts. ;)
cheers and thx for this one Doug....Mississippi quennhas a special place in my heart and guitar play......always good to "warm" up with...Haaa everything on 10....or more.......i said "elsewhere" today, that Leslie West carried on Eric Claptons gibson days into the 70s....thank god....until Billy Gibbons and Angus Young took it along for another 50 years.....until today......yep...cheers.
@@12footchain My band and I were in a recording studio in Long Island. We were if I recall around 15 at the time and a friend of ours knew someone at the studio. We just jamming around when I walks this burly guy with his big Afro hair and it was tbe great Leslie West. He picked up a guitar and started showing me some cool stuff. Tbat was my introduction to mixing minor and major pentatonic. Great guy wish he was still around RIP Leslie. Btw i went to the same high school as Vinnie Appice and lived like 5 blocks from him
Really looking forward to this one...GREAT PICK..Has always been one of my faves. But based on the intro trailer, why the SG rather than the ultra fat tone of Les Paul??? Leslie specialized on a Les Paul Jr!!! 🎼🎶🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Burning 🔥 it up. I miss Leslie West! He moved between minor and major pentatonics! HELLO, PIANOS CAN’T BE ON “10,” Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Dimino, etc. I play guitar and piano and love them equally!!!! 😅
True, it CAN, but I meant in this song it wasn't IMO. Yes Little Richard perfect example. That guy really is the king of RnR for me. Him and Chuck Berry
That's was a great lesson! Thanks for teaching it. Can you do a lesson on Blackfoot HIghway Song like the album. Others have done it but it's not like Ricky plays it and i'm sure you would do an awesome job!
12 FOOT, So it seems that Leslie West keeps switching back and forth from Major pentatonic and minor pentatonic BOX#4 over the D shape CAGED? but mostly ending and landing on the major pentatonic
Hey @12footchain, I loved that, could you check out a couple of songs for me. The first one is called Sunny Cellophane Skies by Status Quo. The other song is called I Don't Want You by the Traffic Jam (a forerunner to Status Quo). There are a few different takes of this latter song but if you could check out the one that's about 3:25 mins long. Thanks.
Absolutely! Fuzz was the tone of the day. I would see them at the Capitol Theater in NJ, early seventies. We would try to get seats up front and give Corky the finger and he would throw sticks at us. Corky is touring with a "Mountain " show. I saw them twice in Boca Raton. Small venue, maybe a hundred people. (the Funky Biscuit) He has Richie Scarlet playing guitar and Mark Clarke on bass. They do all of the favs and a couple of West Bruce and Laing.
???huh - yes i'm still going to update it and correct what I had originally done. I did not say it would be my next video. I will get to it. You don't need to go into if I'm a man of my word or not, good lord.

Such a great riff
Nice work! Been waiting for you to do this one. Tone is everything with Leslie and you did good!
So good ....Thank you !
Your tone is great. First pro amp I had was a Sunn with 4 10's and it was a transistor, it was huge.
Sunn had good Solid State amps, i had the 450 watt Sunn Colesium with the big 2x18" Cerwiv Vegas in Reverse Horn cabs like having two acoustic 360s.
Thanks! Don’t often comment but your videos are the best
Thank you!
Look forward to your lessons each week
lol 2:19 am got the Gibson out playing along. Great job bro. Excellent commentary that’s so easy to understand and grasp. 👌✌️
I actually got to jam with Leslie when he was with the Vagrants. All around great guy
Wow that's awesome! Tell the story?

Nicely done. Shout out to the Mouse Rat T
I hear a lot of Rock Candy in some of those licks never played either so it’s fun learning it😂
Let's do this. Just to see if I'm playing this correctly, thanks 🙏
Good, thanx.
Leslie West stated that he hated that keyboard being played when he was live.
To my ear everything was on 11. Hope you get around to Old Man Down the Road by Fogerty. Thanks man.
Yeah, that would be a great one!

Yep, exactly
Not quite. But close
Thanks!
Thank you!
very good sir,but according to the leslie west you need a gibson LP junior with a single pickup for that "tone"
He's right
Leslie's signature guitars (by Dean) have his "Mountain Of Tone" humbuckers in them --- they sound great!!
