I have the Diamonds & Rubies and it took 3-4 wearings to appreciate and now it's one of my favorites. I encourage you to keep trying with it, so gorgeous

My favorite ET fragrance is Passion for women, I wear it a lot and my fiance loves it. I'm 29 and he is 36 so don't be afraid to wear old school stuff people ✌
P.s. Diamonds and rubies is better for layering than wearing alone imo, as a rose lover I was disappointed with it but it's a great base for other inexpensive sweet floral frags.

As great as ever, Lanier. I have a Saudi friend who I met while doing my masters degree. She had come to Wales to do a Masters in English language teaching, and used the same study room as I did. She had a vast collection of women's fragrances, and I'd often comment on what she was wearing. She wore a fragrance one day that she had borrowed from her mother, and I loved it. It was White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor. It's so cheap (£10.95) and she couldn't understand why I hadn't had the same reaction to a lot of her other ones, which were niche and were (very) high end. I then found out that my grandmother often wore it when I was very young. It's strange how a fragrance can stay in your subconsciousness!

Oh my god, I have all of these fragrances including the original white diamonds & Passion. I actually gave away Diamonds & Rubies to my aunt because it didn’t fit my liking too well. But my absolute favorite one is Diamonds & Sapphires. It’s nostalgic and classic and beautiful. It’s a bit fruity in the opening but just like you said a mature one, definitely not juvenile. Throughout the day, the perfumes dries down and it’s a very beautiful, fresh, classic sensual floral fragrance. I love it.

I agree we should all wear what we love whether it is in vogue or not. 🙂
I wanted to explore ET's fragrances because all of the notes pyramids looked wonderful. I purchased a vintage bottle of Passion first because I love incense, and I thought it would be a gorgeous Oriental. Unfortunately, it did not smell very good, so I presumed that at least some of the notes had spoilt, so I purchased a second vintage bottle. The second bottle looked exceptionally well cared for, but it too smelt awful. I concluded that ingredients were not never very high quality, and they went off over the years despite the bottles being well cared for. I am torn over the bottle design. On the one hand, I like he Art Deco design, but on the other hand, like the fragrance inside, the materials it is made of are not high quality.
I did not give up after Passion, though. Next I purchased Diamonds and Rubies. This time I purchased a brand new bottle. Sadly, it was a hot synthetic mess. I cannot believe there are any natural oils in it. I am sure it has not turned. It is just very cheaply made, and it smells very cheaply made. I do not understand this because I have many Avon and B&BW fragrances that I know do not use the highest quality ingredients, but they still smell quite nice, and I enjoy wearing them. I have only worn this current formulation twice in more than six years. I will never use it again because it is so awful. I still did not give up, though. I found a vintage bottle of Diamonds and Rubies. The vintage fragrance is nicer. It is rounder and a bit more plush with a bit more depth. It has not aged super well, but compared to the current formulation, it is a nice fragrance. I will be able to wear the vintage formulation in Autumn and Winter.
I have a couple of other vintage ET fragrances on the way. I hope I like them. I think at the time they all launched, they likely smelt reasonably good, otherwise, who would have purchased them? However, the ingredients were probably never super high quality, and then with each reformulation, they used cheaper and cheaper ingredients until now they are not worth purchasing at all. If ET could smell the current formulations of her fragrances, I think she would be appalled and would not want her name on them. The bottles are all still attractive, though. If only the fragrances smelt as good as the bottles look, they would be great bargains.

Lanier I can't thank you enough for reviewing these truly precious gems from the HET! ABSOLUTELY an authentic iteration of honesty. I find all her fragrances stunning just as her jewelry collection was and more so the woman herself! My list of favorite to least favorite fragrance would be just as you presented them. I do however reccomend the parfum concentration. I find the parfum of all ET's WD flankers to be so much more wearable, agreeable, and thankfully, accessible. The parfum is true lux! My heart will always belong to the Grand Dame herself White Diamonds but truly feel that these fragrances are true to the DNA that any flanker should possess in respect to the original. Unfortunately and too often "flankers" are in name only ; looking at you HB. In the words of ET:
These have always brought me luck!
    BRAVO Lanier!!!

There are a few types of orchids that have a scent. However they are spicy cinnamon type scents. I grew up near several orchid farms in central Florida. My grandmother grew, attempted to anyway, many orchids, phalonopsis varieties and vandas that you see most often in stores. There very well may be sweet smelling orchids but none that I recall from the growers. Also the flowers that smelled were an orangeish color, small flowers and it was a faint scent.
    Bonus info 😛
Florida has 1 native orchid, a ghost orchid, and it’s vary rare. It’s also very tiny and it’s flower is pale white and looks like a “ghost”! 👻 👻 👻

I bought Diamonds and Rubies recently and the rose is very strong but at the same time so intriguing. Since Covid in July my sense is smell has changed and things I used to like I don’t like, but I bought this blindly although I think I may have had it back in 1993. It’s not fall in love at first smell but more like mmm yes I think it does really suit me. I do feel a bit grandmom from the 80s but that is ok. In a modern world where everyone smells like the new hot stuff I’ll stand out.

I totally agree I am not a big fan of Diamonds and Rubies. I notice after reading lots of reviews it seems like one out of the three is not preferred, so I don't feel too bad. Honestly this is her only fragrance that isn't "me". If I could wear it I suppose it would be in the fall or winter. It seems like the rose and almond can't decide who will win the battle of being the most prolific note and I get tired of being in the olfactory war. Diamonds and Emeralds is my favorite. I wore a Avon Rare Gold for awhile and realized that ET Diamonds and Emeralds must have been their inspiration point. Diamonds and Sapphires is nice, but boy does that cologne/melon note take over on my skin. I would reserve it for Spring Time, and I never spray it on my neck or chest. I keep that one low on the body. I really enjoyed the honest reviews, and just discovered you reading your reviews on Fragranticia. Very nice to meet you Sir.

The delight is all mine! I'm so fortunate to have stumbled upon you reading reviews about Giorgio Red for Men of all scents! HA! I see you not only adore scent, but also Old Hollywood. I just read your blog regarding Bentley for Men Intense. I enjoy your romanticized view of Newport RI. I ran the Garden Department at the Home Depot and Middletown and did Pest Control on Aquidneck Island. After dealing with all the locals who refused the leave the Island for anything, and crawling in every attic and crawlspace from Ocean Ave to Portsmouth its nice to remember the magic I first felt touring the Mansions knowing my Husband and I would soon be posted on the Navy base there. At any rate I adore you Sir! Its a small world after all ; )

Is the three feather item on your shirt a brooch pin? If so, do tell about it-- it looks cool, very Regency. Ich Dien!

    • @laniersmith1798
      @laniersmith1798  7 лет назад +2

Kevin, first off I received your box today but haven't had a chance to check it out. Thank you for sending it. The pin is the Prince of Wales Plume Pin (a copy) that was given to Wallace Simpson when she became the Duchess of Windsor. It was given to her by the Duke of Windsor as a consolation prize of sorts for her Not becoming Queen to his King when he was King Edward VIII. Elizabeth Taylor eventually added it to her collection and her in her own words is how that came to be.
"... I was especially thrilled to buy the Prince of Wales plume pin at the 1987 auction of the jewelry of the Duchess of Windsor. Richard and I had once admired it, so much so that he asked the duchess if he could copy it for me. She very graciously agreed, but we both felt weird about it, so we didn't. And then when it finally came up for auction, I really felt I wanted to have it in my collection-because I admired her great style so much, because Richard had wanted me to have the brooch, and, frankly, because the money from the sale went to support AIDS research. I bid from my house in L.A., and when they told me I had won it, I thought, Yes, this was really meant to be in my care, at least for a while."
After her death in 2011 the pin was sold at auction again and part of the proceeds went to AIDS research. My copy is from the Elizabeth Taylor collction by her Estate and 100% of what I paid went to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS foundation.
Also the ring I am wearing is a copy of The Krupp (Now called the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond) 33.3 karats.

Glad to have you back, Lanier, but diamonds, emeralds, sapphires & rubies? Come one...what makes you think we want to hear about your family jewels? LOL! But serious, although not my kind of scents...I sure do enjoy listening to you review them. Look forward to your upcoming scented adventures. Cheers!
