Carried a weapon professionally for over 30 years. Was in three shootings during my career as a peace officer. Other than changing the grips to suit my hand, no changes or additional items on my weapons. Now, long retired, I still hold to the same principle.
These weapons were designed and manufactured by the maker to function as is. Altering the weapon not only voided the warranty, it increased the chance of a critical failure. Something you can deal with on the range, but could cost you your life on the street. In short; if it ain't broke don't fix it!

100% true. At the end of the day, guns are tools, and manufacturers have employed tons of engineers and workers over the last century+ to make reliable firearms. Some aren't as keen on quality as others, but they designed things with the parts they have for a good reason. The only wiggle room is the sights, especially if you have a Glock out of the box. Those sights are sorry for what they charge.

I have a 9 mm S&W MNP shield performance center that I carry. When I was selling guns back in 2015, 2016, a guy came in with a Kimber single stack carry 9 mm and said that it was malfunctioning. He said it was his dad‘s gun and his dad has been carrying it, but they just took it out to fire it and it just malfunctioning the whole time. I had to inform him that Kimber states that is a 500 round break-in period. I told the guy that his dad should’ve never carried this gun until he at least fired it and was familiar with it and made sure there was no malfunctions and to see what ammo actually ran. So I had to send him away but he never came back because I’m sure that Kimber broke in just fine.

When I got into carrying guns when I hit the legal age I really was in the totally wrong mindset about it. I believed these people saying you need all these attachments, a full size double stack and a spare mag. Now I either carry a stock G19 or a S&W airweight revolver. And the revolver is on me 99% of the time. Less is more in a lot of ways and I enjoy being comfortable

Former neighbor of mine was a detective with LA Sheriffs. I asked him about reloads and carry guns. “Only use factory, CA legal ammo, and whatever you have loaded, keep that box marked and separate from your other ammo.” He mentioned in follow-up that lawyers(particularly DA attorneys here in LA county, aka Gascon) will do everything in their power to make sure you get as much hell as possible.
I didn’t inquire about gun customizations, seeing his answer on ammo alone.
This is coming from a guy(my neighbor) who saw me casting boolits in the driveway some years back and we hit it off talking about gun stuff regularly. He’s now retired, and living out of state.

My carry philosophy is very basic. I'm very much a minimalist in preparing for possible engagements outside the home. 99.99% of my preparation mindset is to avoid engagements altogether. The other .01% is simplicity and reliability, and my preparation is polished accordingly. I get trolled quite a bit for not having a wml on carry guns and other aspects of my (outside the home) armament philosophy.

Well, it is a valid point if you have to shoot in very low light. Target ID and knowing who you're shooting is similar to knowing if you should shoot, and a light will make all the difference.
Small example, someone making a bee line towards you in the dark with something in their hand. A cell phone? A gun? A knife? A soda?

    At 71 years old there are two things I’ve done to my gen 3 Glock 19;
1-night sights (over the stock plastic ones).
    2-Timney trigger group.
The sights were done soon after purchase because the stock sights were, well, Glock and insufficient. The trigger group is because at my age arthritis makes a gen 3 trigger painfully inefficient. The only other change I’d consider is a red dot sight to compensate for trifocal eye glasses but the gen 3 really isn’t set up for that. Frankly both mods were tested out a bunch before trusting the firearm and they are still checked out at least monthly. I have no need for gucci firearms but modifications to improve my ability to place rounds effectively is another matter.

It depends on how far you go with your carry gun. I have a G43 with an optics cut and am running a very small RMRc optic that essentially barely gives any weight or overall size. It also gives me a co witness, but the benefits of the red dot and being able to shoot super fast and accurate is great. It also has a +1 baseplate with a stronger spring. Everything else is stock.

Please make a video about the G-flex trigger, maybe a binary meltdown video, I think it'll be fun.
In case you don't know, it's essentially a Glock binary trigger for fraction of the price.
The reason for the price difference vs Franklin Armory is because the G-flex doesn't have a selector or its own slide, it's just a trigger.

My biggest thing personally and as an instructor to my students. Only carry factory magazines or magazines that the firearm was designed around if the company does not produce it's own. I have seen too many firearms from just about every manufacturer have some issue with various after market magazines. For extras for the range, buy what you want. But I would never trust my family's life or my own to a cheap non-duty vetted after market mag.

Just wanted to point out that while I agree with the idea that less things that can fail is an advantage, however it seems to me that if it is possible to set it up in a cowitness style and fall back on iron sights if the red dot were to fail. Just my personal opinion, hope everyone likes their EDC!

OK Glock 42 - 380 caliber only upgrade a Tungsten guide rod. I carry 4 - 7 round magazines on my low profile chest rig my wife sewed for me. The magazines rest inside 4 nylon magazines pouches. The magazines are held in place with rigged sides. I inserted plastic guides sewn into the vest. They offer just enough resistance to hold the magazines in place. Extra protection each pouch has a Velcro enclosure to hold the magazine in. I know this is not the ideal caliber, but I suffer from arthritis in my hands and shoulders. The reduced recoil is helpful and doesn’t hurt my hands.

I feel like you should carry what is comfortable and reliable for you. Whether that's a Gucci Glock or a dead stock micro9, it's all about what fits YOU best. I really prefer a lighter, but not too light trigger. My Glock has about a 3.5 trigger pull, and it's tricked tf out for a budget pistol, but it still has mainly stock internals. I have a combat armory frame, a 19l comped slide, a p80 flat trigger and bar, and an OEM slide parts kit and trigger housing. It's light, crisp, but still gives me the feeling that even if I mis-gripped or if the handgun was pried from me that it wouldn't go off accidentally or have a trigger that is "too light". I regularly have friends and family shoot it and they all love how it feels as well. Green dot that's co-wotkessed and a holosun light to complete it.
My Glock is something akin to a manual trans sleeper Honda that's got a decent set of wheels on it It's plenty reliable in a set of hands who know how to use it, but you can create problems if you don't know what you're doing, and it's fast but nothing crazy.

I've been through all the stages I can imagine with guns and gears. Never got in trouble for keeping it simple. Like someone said "gear do not compensate for bad technique" I feel like having fancy stuff is fun and maybe part of the gun ownership and hobby. But the angle here is carrying and defending yourself. That's is perfectly doable with simplicity and consistency. Flashlight is a need for carrying at night in my opinion. Same with tritium iron sights. I've got both in my stock Glock (no trigger kits, no special slides or colors) I totally understand the cosmetic appeal to some.

I've had a SW Airweight snub on a magnet in the bathroom. After 12 years there, it has sunken in that it is useless in a home invasion in the world we now live in. This isn't the 1960's when 1 person would break in. Criminals are pack hunters now. So, a few weeks ago I replaced the snub with a Glock 17. (I still use a SW Airweight snub in the sauna, in my robe pocket. But that is the last snub I'm using.)
The problem with replacing the rust resistant snub with a Glock in the bathroom is; the Glock picks up tremendous water condensation and I don't think it will hold up like the SW snub for rust resistance. In my little bathroom, the Glock is about 6 inches away from the shower and everything gets steamed up since it is such a small room. The only smaller bathroom I've been in is a 'wet bathroom' in a truck camper or a bathroom at a hotel in Catalina in the 70's. (If you don't know what a wet bathroom is...Google 'wet bathroom truck camper.')
But...I figured out a little mod to cut the Glock condensation pretty much out. I cover the Glock with a hand towel while showering. The towel gets rid of condensation 100% from what I can see. And I tested it in a long, relaxing 25-minute shower. And even if condensation is only cut by 90%, the Glock should be able to handle that with the coating they use. I leave the towel on it all the time. Not a big deal grabbing it in an emergency and throwing the small towel off.
Well, if and when I ever hit the lotto I will buy a bigger bathroom and put 3 Glocks in it. I try to keep G17s or G19's only a few feet away from me at all times. Everything is on magnets, except shotguns. Pat McNamara does not go for that, but that is how I do it.
BTW...the Catalina bathroom was so small, if you sat down to take a crap...your feet were in the shower!

I carry stock factory guns with one exception, a red dot optic and/or updated iron sights. Prosecutors will try to spin aftermarket changes to the gun as reckless and showing you wanted to make the gun more deadly.
So many people are so worried about changing triggers and all kinds of tacticool gimmicks, usually before they’ve ever shot the gun.
Lights are another way you can tell people under 35 years old from older people who’ve got more experience. Your carry gun doesn’t need a light. If you’re drawing your carry weapon, you already know there’s a threat and you’re taking the last ditch action to stop it. I’m not clearing rooms or searching down dark alleys with my micro 9 carry gun.
If you aren’t sure a threat exists, you shouldn’t be drawing your weapon and flagging everyone and everything with a WML.
