A celebration of the reliable 3-star movies we love, GOOD ENOUGH MOVIES looks back on the not-quite-classics you can still quote by heart and will always stop to watch whenever they're on. Maybe it's a nostalgic fave you haven't seen in years, maybe it's a movie you would've loved but never heard about - until now. They're far from perfect, they're hardly ubiquitous, but they're still G.E.M.s
THIS INSTALLMENT: Mel Brooks' 1986 blockbuster send-up SPACEBALLS, starring Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Daphne Zuniga. To a generation of 80s kids it was the STAR WARS spoof, but it's often held up by comedy fans as the beginning of a down-trend for Brooks' feature work. Who has the Schwartz-powered saga pegged right?
This and Really that Good make me happy, because so much of the internet is devoted to shitting on stuff.
Which is why it's so bizarre so many people want Bob to do a "Really That Bad" for BvS; we already have so many RUclipsrs willing to shit all over bad films that we don't really need a special show for that.
Agreed. MovieBob is a lot more positive than most and that really helpful. The internet needs more positivity.
If Wonder Woman is a great movie, then I think it would be interesting to have a long video from MovieBob looking at what changed from Man of Steel, BvS, Suicide Squad that turned the DCEU around.
Agreed! I've recently starting watching Movies with Mikey too, that guy is also insightful and positive. Him and Bob are def. my two favorites. Not necessarily because I don't like movies being shit on, that can be plenty funny, but being positive is such a refreshing change for the internet. Takes more effort to be positive than negative
youtuberaptor
Never heard of him. Will give him a search, thanks!
Man, parody used to be such a solid genre.
Matthew Craig it really did, didn't it? scary movie 3 ruined it
Scary Movie ruined it, since it was trying to parody Scream, which was in itself a parody. (Aside from the fact that the low-brow humor in the Scary Movie series wasn't even well executed
Sometimes parodying a parody works, like in Gremlins 2 and... OK, I got nothing else.
Literally the first thing that I thought of when I read that comment! Bad parody, but strong box office returns created a new, disappointing formula :-(
I thought the first two were alright. not classics like the naked gun series, but they were ok. the 3rd and the rest got waaay stupid. you know which one I actually liked a lot? meet the Spartans. lol, Idk why, but I thought it was hilarious! I may be a bit retarded
This series idea is good enough.
I concur.
Agreed.
yes
I'd say its really that good
It wouldn have been better if the name didnt belittle the movie and the concept wasnt stolen from red letter media
"I knew it, im surrounded by assholes!" - spaceballs - but could describe any you tube comments section...
Ratel.H Badger that and 4chan
"Keep firing Assholes!"
Chris Gammon: That line still kills me every single time. :D
I still hope that we'll eventually get The Quest For More Money.
otakon17 I remember Brooks joking that the real sequel would be titled Spaceballs 3: The Search for 2.
mowdownjoe I would see that in a heartbeat.
otakon17 Now that his kids are all grown up, Rick Moranis has indicated he may be willing to return for a Spaceballs sequel. For those who don't know, Rick Moranis retired from acting back in the late 90's/early 2000's, because his wife tragically died due to cancer, & because he didn't want his kids raised by a rotating cast of nannies & surrogate parental figures. You really have to respect a guy who walks away from a successful acting career, because he put his kids' welfare first.
I'm still waiting for History of the World Part 2.
Jews in spaaaace!
Spaceballs was one of my favorite movies as a kid and that was years before I ever even watched a Star Wars movie.
Spaceballs to this day is my all-time favorite movie! As a kid of the 90's with a bit of a movie buff father, I grew up with Star Wars but was never really a 'superfan' of it as I'm just not that into sci-fi stuff. My dad made me watch this one saturday afternoon when it came on as a local network's movie of the week and I've been in love with it ever since!
It does such a great job lampooning the whole sci-fi genre and what going on in Hollywood at the time that it's become timeless. To this day, this movie is still playing on a constant repeating loop somewhere in my head and whenever I do watch it again, I can more or less quote every line by heart. I love this movie that much.
Great segment and great movie for it!
Amazing! I would love to see more of these.
My nephew saw Spaceballs before Star War. When he saw Darth Vader, he yelled Big Helmet. ;)
Watched this movie as a kid. Loved it ever since. This was my gateway to Mel Brooks
Always loved this movie, still do
Absolutely do this series. I'll rewatch every one, promise.
I LOVE how the eventual lineup for Really That Good is on the whiteboard. You are my favourite, Bob.
I sure as hell enjoyed this and hope there'll be many more episodes!
'Spaceballs' may not be 'REALLY THAT GOOD', but it is 'REALLY THAT FUNNY'. Also, the approach that Mel Brooks takes at mocking 'Star Wars', and the whole 'blockbuster' landscape was very insightful, and clever. Compare that to 'Seltzerberg' who only rely on cheap laughs, toilet humor, and pop culture references that'll become dated in five years. (Even Seth MacFarlane is kinda guilty of this to some extent.) Also, I can kinda relate to how Mel was becoming the 'old dinosaur' of the movie business taking pot shots at the 'kids playing in the yard', but many of today's 'satirists' could take a few lessons from ''Spaceballs'.
This was one of my favourite movies when I was little and to this day Pizza the Hut is the grossest things I have ever seen in a movie.
Spaceballs is more than just good: it's the greatest comedy ever! I watch this movie almost once a month.
Spaceballs?!?!?!Oh shit. There goes the internet.
Love this concept. Spaceballs was definitely a great choice for it too. I'm excited to see more of this series.
Spaceballs was always my favorite, for many of the reasons that Bob mentioned. It was, in fact, my introduction to Mel Brooks. My dad showed it to me while I was young and impressionable (in addition to Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different) and it set the tone for my comedic tastes growing up.
I think this series is an excellent idea. Its rare for a movie to be Really that Good material, but there are a lot of gems out there and I fully support exploring them all.
This makes a great companion piece to RTG, looking forward to more.
This is a great series. Glad I found it and I hope others do the same!
OH HELL YEAH!
I love this idea and this is a great movie.
Agreed on all counts. Not his best work, in retrospect, but at the time, one of the best things I'd ever seen. I still love it, I still quote it, it is a favorite.
This seems like something I'd have a drink and rewatch the back catalogue for the ninth time once there are a few more of these.
HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE BRILLIANT AND UNASSAILABLE SPACEBALLS!?
I kid. This is definitely an interesting idea. Middle of the road films to tend to get left behind, as only the amazing or utter trash films get talked about, by and large. I love Spaceballs, and it's nice to see someone talk about it again.
I saw SPACEBALLS before I watched STAR WARS. This shaped my childhood forever.
Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles were part of the regular rotation when I was kid, and I still love them both. :)
I say go for it. Trolling everything has gone stale long ago.
And Spaceballs kills me every time. 🙌
Great episode, Bob. Definitely keep this show running; it was short, concise, insightful and and absolutely delightful.
For me my really Good Enough Movie was Vanhelsing it may not be a master piece but goddamn it there are just so many memorable things about it.
I'm so glad you're doing more stuff like this.
Good video Bob. Would like to see more of these.
I assume this means "Blazing Saddles" is going to eventually get a "Really That Good" episode?
When I was about 12, I loved Spaceballs. My brothers and I basically reenacted the entire movie line for line while driving on vacation.
I like it as a shorter segment, you've got the depth pretty much right, it being essentially a podcast where the visuals were secondary also worked. Would watch again.
I really like this! I like how you could acknowledge both the Bad and the good of something in a way that is insightful and not over the top. I would love to see more of these!
I like this concept. Considering the amount of attention given to Disney, Warner and Sony movie release schedules, it helps to remember that G.E.M.s are already out there waiting to be viewed.
You're spot-on about "Spaceballs" being a lot of people's first film they saw by Mel Brooks. I have very fond memories of my older brother introducing this film to me when I was a kid. I loved it because it was funny and a space film like Star Wars. Wasn't til I was older that I got most of the jokes (as well as checked out the rest of Mel Brooks' back catalog of films) that I appreciated it that much more. And yeah, the merchandising gag was (for lack of a better term, so forgive the pun) priceless.
Regarding this video series, I definitely think you should do more of these, Bob. There's so many little GEMs out there that I think acknowledgment. For instance, "The Fifth Element". It was my first time being allowed to see anything Bruce Willis was in, and I loved it. It also introduced me to the awesome chameleon that is Gary Oldman, and that's always a plus in my book.
I really like this as a series idea. These are the kinds of movies, as you pointed out yourself, that a lot of people really love. Talking about the classics is great and all, but I imagine there are a lot of people wondering why they never hear any critic dig into the qualities of the old favorites they grew up watching.
Yes. Do more of these. You just punched me in the nostalgia. I think Montey Python and the Holly Grail would fit nicely into this category.
I'd gladly watch more! Great movie to start off with and a perfect example of what you are going for.
This, sir, is a good idea, and I really hope we can see more of it. Many people don't seem to think a movie can be GOOD if it's not edgy, or dark and brooding, or insightful, or anything like that. And Spaceballs is just as you said... a FUN movie that is GOOD ENOUGH. With so many other movies out there meeting a similar criteria in their own rights for GOOD ENOUGH, I think you have a good show on your hands. Good luck to you, MovieBob (though, I admit, you'll always be the Overthinker to me).
“Fuck! Even in the future, nothing works!”
This has been my go-to motto for the past decade.
Absolutely more of these. I love the idea of being able to do Really That Good but on a smaller scale. Smaller scale means more videos! Definite yes Bob.
I love everything that you do, Bob! SpaceBalls in one of my favorites. You've got my support for this series.
It feels good to have movie bob back.
Oh hell yeah! Start this series off with one of my favorites!
My dad introduced me to Young Frankenstein when I was thirteen. Been a Mel Brooks fan ever since.
Would definitely watch more of this series
On the Internet, where many are quick to divide popular culture into "GREAT" and "TRASH" with nothing in between, to the point where they get actively ANGRY when their holy cow takes some flak, I think a celebration of the Good Enough is a great idea, keep it up!
No matter where I see Bill Pulman, I wanna shout "LOOOONE STARRRR!"
I love your videos Bob. You are incredibly good at reasoning and explaining different views and finding good middle grounds where everybody can be happy. You're a damn treasure.
I just watched Spaceballs again and this review is spot on. It's good enough.
"now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb"
Keep these coming Mr Bob - I like the idea; I reckon they would be best between 5 - 10 mins
Awesome series! It's great to see some favorite beloved-but-not-always-praised movies getting some love. Please do more!
As a kid, I always saw that divide between what was Adult related and Kid related. Seeing the combination of Aliens (Adult Stuff) shared with Michigan J. Frog (Kid Stuff) was a total game changer and one of the funniest moments in life that I can remember. This Mel Brooks guy was finally an adult who related to kids and helped for a moment bridge that divide .
Cinema bridged that gap in Holy Grail with the farting flag bearers. That was a good Father/Son bonding moment.
I love this series concept! I feel like the internet places way too much emphasis on either the very best or the very worst media. Taking a look at the "pretty good" stuff that's still managed to stick around is a great idea
That Destroy All Monsters poster in the background. I need it. Great video as always Bob.
Huge fan of your work Bob. Frankly I don't even care what the topic is. You talk about something and I typically enjoy it. Keep up the hard work and keep producing great content.
Love the new series
Bob, please do more of these. It's a solid idea, more open to a wider range of films, and it reminds me of your Shlocktober episodes that I never tire of. Keep it up!
Love this concept for a movie show Bob, please keep making more.
I am watching this and laughing at all the silent clips in the background. When I was a kid I watched this a lot so I know all the lines in those scenes.
Wonderful pilot. Additionally, something else that was unique about this movie is that the special effects crew were the same from Star Wars. When do you ever see a well known production company go out of their way to make fun of themselves? Like Zack Snyder taking over Meet the Spartans. Plus this is the best Gateway movie for new Mel Brooks fans, I don't think I could have ever appreciated History of the world without knowing his style first.
Please make more of these. This is a fantastic premise and I can't wait to see what you tackle next.
Bob, this new show is truly outrageous. Truly truly truly outrageous.
Love the G.E.M.s idea, Bob. This way, I don't have to plan my day around a 40 minute sit down for Really That Good, even though it's always totally worth it!
I love the idea, the execution and the format.
I can't wait to see more!
I think you have to give props to George Wyner (Colonel Sandurz) playing the 'straight man' to Rick Moranis gloriously silly Dark Helmet.
Well I enjoy it in the exact same way as Really That Good, just appropriately scaled down. It can stay.
When I was a kid my friend Sarah and I thought Spaceballs was the funniest movie ever and we watched it like 20 + times.
Jack Duxbury Within a year maybe.
Spaceballs is so much better a parody than most of the more recent parodies like Scary Movie and Meet the Spartans.
Randy Thomet: Well that's because those movies are worthless garbage.
Definitely a show I would watch
Great idea for a series! What I love the most is that this will give you the chance to talk about very much loved, critically middle-of-the-road movies. For example, I don't know any other series you currently have that would permit you some time to talk about Spaceballs of all things to this depth. I'm sure you would have made talking about movies like this possible regardless, but the setup for this series flows really well!
At first I was hissing (yes I hiss) at the implications that 'Spaceballs' was "GOOD ENOUGH"
However, yes, compared to blazing saddles, you are correct and yes it was my introduction to Mel.
Please keep doing this
I love this and I love Mel Brooks movies! Please do more videos like this.
I liked this. The Really That Good series is probably one of my favorite things Moviebob's done and the GEMs series is shaping up to be the same. I like it.
This GEM concept is truly outrageous. Could you use some holograms with it?!?
Absolutely do more of these!
good enough for more installments and a list of stuff worth watching again!
I could stand it to b a little longer...but I love the idea and I can't wait to see more
Excellent idea for an ongoing series, Bob. Keeping the videos short is also solid. That way you can produce a bunch of these. There are so many beloved films that fit this category. Keep the in depth analysis for Really That Good.
I can see the appeal of these shorter videos for works that might not make it to "Really that good" but still deserving some attention. can't wait to see what is up next.
Thanks, Bob. I hope this series takes off.
I feel like this series has a lot of potential. Excited to see the films you cover.
I hope you keep these up. The last one I just saw was phenomenal.
I like the concept. Short overview style with keener focus on the unique bits of a film makes it easy to digest and understand and doubles as a beginner's guide to a particular film. The time might need to fluctuate for those films that require a bit more unpacking, but i don't see it going over 6 so that fits with the snippets of time I personally have in the day, so that's a plus.
Adore the concept! thank you :) please MOAAARRR
This series is outrageous, truly truly truly outrageous
I respect the to the point detail and analysis. I also agree that while this movie is excellent in its own regard, it is one of those movies that is just good enough. Overall, I enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work.
I like this, bite size MovieBob is good.
Its a nice relaxing nostalgia trip.
I like it. Nice job bob. It's exactly what you said, bite size form "is it that good?". Also great first pick. Spaceball is totally a "good enough movie".
In a strange turn of events, the first Mel Brooks movie I was exposed to when I was a kid was History of the World Part 1. Let's just say that I didn't understand half of the jokes in the movie until I was a bit older. Spaceballs OTOH was one of my favorites when it came out.
Yeah that was good, But you need to do something about that frame background, the constant flickering strobe thing that's going on it hella distracting. if it's meant to be some kinda VHS TV effect, it's not working very well.
I agree, I have seen that happen with a number of Bob's backgrounds and other visual assets. Really takes me out of it.
Ranneko Plays Hmm, Maybe it's something to do with how he renders/processes his videos. he might need to look into adjusting his export settings.
Exactly my comment. It's really unnerving
Unfortunately he's been ignoring comments about the flickering for years now.
I think it's an issue with interlacing, like whatever preset he's using for the editing is interlaced and whatever preset he's using for export is progressive (or vice versa) and that's being exacerbated by the YT compression, but yeah as said above this has been an issue ever since he started on ScrewAttack and he still hasn't been bothered to fix it, unlikely to happen now.
This is awesome. While I love the format for Really That Good, sometimes not every movie has enough to fill out an entire 30+ minutes on, and this kind of format is perfect. It also opens up the field for commentary a lot of other older movies. i.e. Gremlins might not be a classic. However, with this show, it can easily fit in here.
Also, I'm just really glad that you're stepping up your content generation speed again. Back in the Escapist days, your scheduled slots were my go-tos for internet entertainment.
People overlook this one, it's REALLY GOOD!
Love it as a concept, love to see more of it. Don't really get the aesthetic, but it doesn't ruin the show.
