Thank-you for another "practical" Mini 2 flying lesson. Your videos played a big part in convincing me that the DJI Mini 2 was the right drone for me, and now that I have one (got it last month), your videos are helping me to "learn the ropes" with this very capable drone. I noticed that you were not using your iPad to control Lassie today. Any particular reason for this? I have been thinking about getting a bracket to use my iPad Mini with the Mini 2, but I am hearing that the iPad display is quite dim and difficult to see in any type of sunlight. My "senior eyes" sometime have difficulty reading the smaller numbers (distance, height, etc...) on the app when flying with my iPhone, and I thought the larger display of the iPad Mini would help with this - but not if the display was too dim.

No, the drone started an auto RTH and I couldn’t lower it further. As soon as the drone auto rose to a height where I connected again, and because I was pushing the sticks, it cancelled the RTH and gave me control again. This happens when the screen goes blank.

    • @WindsweptRobert

@@WindsweptRobert Missed that! If that's the case, it may have just been an existing condition. What I find interesting is, you flew successfully (not considering the signal loss when pushed to an unreachable location behind building) - it didn't cause a flyaway, loss of control, uncommanded flight issues or any major issues. This help me relax a bit over "calibration required" messages, which I usually respond to by:
      a) Panic
      b) Landing as if my life were in danger
      c) Doing my impression of "Johnny Recalibration on the Spot"

The person that requested the test asked specifically that I go behind a building where the controller loses VLOS with the drone. That’s why I chose that particular building: it is a safe location where no person would be there in the event that the drone dropped to the ground; it fit the requirements of the request; it was not a long way for me to travel to.
I know that the signal would have been maintained if I flew in VLOS, but doing that here would have been completely pointless in regard to this test :)

@@WindsweptRobert There is some interference always as I fly a lot at sea, from my ship to spot other ships. There is some radiation always from your own ship and from the other as well, however I have noticed quite huge differences between my old mavic pro Platinum and mini2. With my last video I have flown 2000 mtr and than it was loosing on some angles, today I flow only 900 mtrs in clear sight and two times Rth activated, that ship probably had more interference than other. Although it doesn’t mention 500m as a maximum horizontal distance specifically, I’ve had conversations with CAA reps who tell me that they consider 500m as the maximum distance that they would accept that VLOS can still be maintained.
Regarding flying when behind a building and whether the CAA would consider this negligent, the CAA would look at each case and judge on its own merits: flying behind an active primary school building will be regarded differently than flying behind an abandoned building, overgrown with bushes, trees and other flora, that is a distance away from any other active area.

Could be tin foil covered walls in there for all we know lol plus a lot of brick

Well, there's a lot of brick, that's for sure. Not so sure about the tinfoil, but with that amount of bricks, I reckon that's enough to stop the signal! ;)
