- Before committing to buy tools and equipment for the cave dig, I go out and visit a local cave which was dug about 150 years ago. I also hired a stone saw to do some test cutting to see jut how hard this project could be.

I remember some Time Team where half of a Roman site had eroded down in the last 2000 years. Like hundreds of yards of a high hill, now smaller with a high steep almost cliffside and the river moved right under it. And probably will continue to.

Notice the arch shape top of doorways and passages. I also have seen videos of ancient tunnels or underground built the same way. Some are more of an egg shape, much stronger that the usual rectangular from where it needs braces and supports.
Old Arches don't have re-bars or plaster on them, all they use are leveled flat slabs with a 2 sided wedge Keystone on the top center of the arch.
One of the primary problem digging an underground homes is the ventilation. The positioning of ventilation shaft for cold air to get in and out. I guess it depends on the location, elevation and orientation where it is facing.

you should see the sand stone tunnels in Liverpool the are rooms down there you can fit a football pitch in
I know a house that has a basement. With more than one hundred miles
found by explorers who surveyed their transit using Grade-5 Cartography.
They have base camps inside. All about 12 hours apart. Supplied daily
by many volunteer porters. Who won't see the sun for a day or two. Going
through it requires mountaineering skills. They do not teach and don't
allow uninvited people past the property entry gate. What visitors they
do get come from several different states. All members of one caving
organization. I've got map copies of past years. There is no end to the
holes being dug or found open but still waiting for explorers. Don't
keep holding your breath because I'm not providing location clues.
If you're digging that out with power tools, how do you get the tunnel to form such a perfect arch?
so if you WANTed to make a bigger tunnel to us it as a small room what shape would you use??
Is it cheaper to buy a old minner cave thats been dug out already. Not one that falling down, but one that was just left because of a lack of material found inside the mine, or cave. I always wanted a really large cave or mine, with a small stream inside it, and diffrent layers of large tunnles. How much is taxes on caves or mines? I googled that, and found nothing. I wanted something in the redwoods forest in Cali. Thanks for any info

I want to live in one of these. What are all the tools you used from start to finish of the cave?
I'm using a Husqvarna cut and break (K3000) a 3kw generator and a dewily sis max breaker. It's slow work but if I can get in a meter or two I may look at bigger machinery to speed the job up. Not sure I want to live in it as there will be no windows, i'm planning on using it as a root cellar.

No I didn't do that one, these caves where done about 200 years ago I'm just visiting looking for inspiration.

@@PaulMcClellanmn That's actually a really good question. I am going to have to look into that. It's about 200 feet high and 200 feet wide and 400 feet long. Why do you ask?

Depending on the material you'll have to use a significant you'll have to use a significantly different equipment to successfully build is the successfully build a tunnel project
Too hard, too soft, too fragmented, too wet , it's probably not worth your time
Don't let the surface appearance of the rock Discourage you, the the surface exposed to elements will always be low quality fractured material
