I love that even when he was exposed, Joaquin told Chakal "Please, just don't hurt them" He may not have been fully honest, but he genuinely cared for them
Fun fact: The "I Love You Too Much" and Manolo's proposal scenes were based off of moments that happened between the movie's creator, Jorge Gutierrez, and his wife (who he's always calling his muse, it's super sweet and cute ^v^). But yeah, apparently his wife gave them the "did you really think it'd be that easy?" when they first started dating, and then later on Jorge did that whole proposal thing with the candles.
As a Mexican I honestly prefer this to coco (both made me cry )but this is my fav as it’s my childhood, and FUN FACT: Guillermo del Toro(Shape of water ) actually worked on the movie
It's unfair that everytime I hear about this movie it automatically gets compared to Coco. Two movies can take a similar concept and make their own story, if anything I'm glad they both exist to bring more representation to a beautiful holiday
I don’t like seeing people contest Coco and BoL between each other. They both tell stories relating to Dia de los Muertos but each focus on different aspects. Coco focuses more on the family aspect, while BoL is focused on the tradition woven between a love story. To me they are both awesome movies that get you in the feels.
La Muerte and Xibablba were the best part of the movie to me. They perfectly encapsulate what two married gods (who actually loved eachother) would be. Constantly arguing about people and the world, but still truly loving one another and tiptoeing the line of I hate you and I love you.
A criminally underrated movie. I actually watched this at the cinema on Halloween when it came out. It's a movie I go back to every now and then, and my Dad enjoys it as well. The animation style is something that I think really sets it apart from other movies. My Dad's favourite moment is when Manolo puts out his finger to make Chakal wait while he kisses Maria. My favourite part is when Manolo first arrives in the Land of the Remembered. The music in that scene is just amazing. Tried to Shazam it, but I can't listen to it anywhere. I think I'd have to buy the whole soundtrack or something.
I know I'm late to this, but when he said, 'Of all the places to build a town...' it made me laugh since Mexico City is actually built in the middle of a lake...in the same place the ancient Aztec city was built.
The book of life is 100% my favorite movie I love the love and friendship and the movie is so stunning. Haveing them be wooden dolls was a stroke of genius. UGH I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
The funniest part of this movie is in the Land of the Remembered, where the entrance guy remarks that he was awaiting his beloved "honey bunny." Come five minutes later, she appears, and he just freaks! Manolo's face behind him is priceless!😂😂😂😂 Also, we love a good badass female in movies, don't we Movies in Depth?❤🤍 Xixalba's face during the Land of the Dead scene is pure I f*** up.😂😂😂 Maria's death scene is sad, not just because she gets poisoned, but because Manolo and Joaquin basically became enemies by that time. Manolo's dad was the only one at his grave, which means that neither Maria nor Joaquin knew their friend died.😢😢😢😢😅
6:51 Mexico City was built in the middle and, eventually, over a lake. Yeah, the city is slowly sinking. Search the story of Tenochtitlan and Mexico's conquest for more info on the subject, or ask me, I'll love to iluminate you ❤
"Of all the places to put a town" It's Mexico City! The original city Mexico City was built out of, Tenochtitlan, was an Aztec city built on an island in a lake! :D But yeah when this came out and people basically just called it a Coco knockoff it broke my heart bc it's such a good creative *different* movie
I love both the movies. My favorite is probably"Coco",but they're both very good. Also...I'm gonna say it:Maria is a Gryffindor,Manolo is a Hufflepuff and Joaquin is a Slytherin.(And..the Candlemaker is a Ravenclaw...possibly?)
Hey! I love your reaction, in fact Jorge Gutierrez, the creator of the movie said that Maya and the Three is a prequel to the past lives of Maria and Manolo, I recommend it because it's very good
Im not surprised a ton of people haven’t watched this since this movie is underrated but I am surprised that people haven’t even heard of it. I watched this back when it first came out and when coco came out, it was THAT movie that reminded me of this one and not the other way around but I am glad you mentioned it. And though they are similar, I agree that they tell different stories. While coco teaches you to appreciate your family, the book of life more so celebrates it and tells you to just live an honest life so they can’t really be compared.
Fun Fact about the town in the lake, one of the most important ancient cities of México, Tenochtitlan, was built above a lake cause a god told them to.
I prefer "Coco" over "The Book of Life". However, "the Book of Life" definitely has a special place in my heart. It came out first and it was my first Day of the Dead movie. I think it came out when I was about 14. At one point, we had it on DVD. Back then, before "Coco" was a thing, I used to watch it all the time. I think, it's more of an intentionally silly story. And so, we don't learn much of "The Day of the Dead". However, I know and understand it's a story centred around the "Day of the Dead". And I appreciate that it addresses some serious issues like animal cruelty. It allows people to have important discussions like "How can we prevent animal abuse? And what's the first step to making it end?" I have nothing against the movie. You asked me for my opinion. So, I'm giving it. And I thought I'd explain. P.S. "Coco", in my opinion, did a much better job at explaining the Day of the Dead. It worded things so much clearer and simpler for families and children through fun storytelling and animation. From "Coco", we learn the marigold petals help the souls of loved ones who sadly passed find their way home to see them for that one night a year. We also learn that they put up pictures and food on the offrenda as an act of remembrance, and so they can come home. And we learn that they pass down their family's stories, especially of late loved ones, so they're never forgotten. Finally, we learn that once there's nobody "left who remembers you", you're forgotten. And you experience that "Final Death". But that's just my preference. Thank you, and have a great day or night wherever you are!
I DO also think they are different enough, they just both have a plot that involves the day of the dead, and someone visiting it. Coco was more sentimental and about family/emotional growth. While there was mild, being accepted by family plot in the book of life, and it did also involve being a musician against family wishes.... that was the central plot of Coco, The book of life was a romance/hero's journey type. (I'm talking monolo not Joaquin... who just had a quick redemption arc). It is just very unfortunate that they were released close together. If they were farther apart. The book of life may have had more room for it's deserved recognition.
I really love this movie for a lot of reasons but the ones I love the most is the story itself, I love Malono and Maria’s chemistry together you can see there’s really love there ❤️❤️❤️ and the animation is on point and beautiful 🤩 and I love that Joaquín came to his senses and became a better man 😊 honestly when I watched it the first time I didn’t realise it was underrated but I hope more people watch it because it is amazing and My point view different from Coco because Coco is more about family and this one is more about love and being selfless. Thanks for the reaction and hope you enjoyed it and can’t for the next video 😊😁😉😉😉
Book of Life came out before Coco. I worried Coco would rip off BoL but they were similar and yet different. I have been enjoying different culture movies like these, where you get a glimpse into the lives and styles.
I used to think Coco was copying The Book of Life. While theyre both incredibly similar, Coco is a family lesson where this movie is more about the love triangle ...okay there was more family stuff then i rememebred... edit: you exlained the differences very well. I really struggled lmao
I'd love to see reactions to Ron's Gone Wrong, The Bad Guys, Epic (2013), Spies in Disguise, & Strange Magic on the channel as well someday. For some reason each of those films popped into my head at some point during this video lol, & they're all great films imo.
Book of Life has a great stop motion/puppet look, though it's actually cgi. But it reminds me somewhat of another AMAZING movie, Kubo and the Two Strings -- which actually IS stop motion.

I like how he was a good person at heart, just a little skewed.

That is the best proposal ever.🥹
The only thing that separates this from Coco honestly is the themes: this focuses on love and sincere heroism, while Coco focuses on family.
YES MY POINT EXACTLY
I kinda miss animated movies who had their own distinctive art style that they could claim to be their own, it gave them a unique touch
Yess and then spiderverse said holddd my drink
A lot of them still do
"I've been down here for years, awaiting my beloved honey bunny"
"Hi, honey!"
"Too soon!"
My favorite joke of the entire movie
YES. HAD ME SPITTING OUT MY DRINK LMAO
"You two are acting like fools!"
"Wait. Me too?"
Why do I not remember this movie being so funny? 😂
It has so many funny moments!!!
This movie is actually underrated to me, I remember my nephews wanting to see it and honestly we all loved it, I might watch it with them again
It was way more fun than I was expecting!!
I remember everytime Manolo was singing, I was like "Boy, you better SING!! 😆"
SINGGGGGG
I just simply love that Maria is literally voiced by Gamora from GOTG
Omg I didn’t real… oh boi…
No way you just disprespectfully called her Gamora from GOTG

I’m so glad that it’s getting the recognition from around the community as well!!
