Absolutely Loved the book of Life, I'd have to say the Scene one that sticks out to me the Most though is the "I'm a Freak" song, I'm not sure why, But that scene has stuck with me for Years, Its one I always remember from this Movie, not to say I forget the other scenes, I can remember it quite well but that Scene is what I think of first when I think of this Movie

THE THING ABOUT JOAQUIN is that he's not just the things you described him as, he's not this unlikeable antagonist, he's actually a pretty well-written character. Him, Manolo and Maria had been best friends ever since they were little kids. And while they all had their own struggles and challenges, at least Manolo and Maria had a loving family - more specifically, loving fathers. Yes, fathers who tried to push them in a certain direction, but who ultimately loved them and essentially meant well, even if their actions were often misguided. Well, Joaquin never had that because his father died before he could even remember him. And it made him feel really alone. He had no guidance through life except for this massive expectation of who he should be.
He grew up with this enormous shadow hanging over him - his father had been the great hero of the village, a larger-than-life figure that would be pretty impossible to live up to. Everybody worshipped him, but no one as much as Joaquin himself. Of course this lonely kid with no family became hellbent on becoming a great hero himself - it meant people would love and respect him, he would finally be _someone._ That was Joaquin's idea of worth - he had to become this great, amazing hero, live up to his father's legacy, in order to get the things he craved in life, to be respected, wanted, to have a family, to be worth something. So of course once he got the medal and became invulnerable, he became somewhat pompous and arrogant. He had to be the perfect, strongest warrior with no weakness and no flaw, and he was always surrounded by people who did nothing but fawn over him and feed his ego - not because of who he really was, but because they needed his protection.
One thing I really disagree with you about, though, is his relationship to Maria. He did truly, genuinly care about her. It's just that his idea of love was a bit warped. He believed that if he got and become all those things, she would love him and he would "earn" her, and it would make them both happy. I mean, all his adult life, Maria's father and all the other villagers kept reinforcing that idea. But he did want to make Maria happy. And as soon as he saw she truly loved Manolo and didn't want to marry him, he hesitated, he seemed ready to say no to their marriage (and I believe he would have; for all his flaws, he was never a bad guy).
Most importantly, though, I'm certain that much more about Maria, it was about General Posada. Joaquin cared about Maria a lot, but I don't think that he truly loved her romantically, deep down. More than anything, he wanted a father. And General Posada offered him that. He was desperate to belong in that family and finally have all the things he was missing as a child.
WHICH IS WHY it absolutely breaks my heart that at the end, after Joaquin nearly sacrifices himself, Maria's father just turns around, pretty much forgets that Joaquin exists, and calls _Manolo_ "son". When I first saw the movie, my heart actually sank for him in that moment. Like, damn, this guy went from almost marrying his childhood best friend and finally having the family (and fatherly love) he always dreamed of to losing an eye, the girl _and_ the chance of being a part of that family - the latter two to his best friend - in the span of like an hour. And nobody cares...! Poor guy... Joaquin deserved better, man.
Sorry for this unhinged rant, but I want Justice for my man Joaquin...!

That's the reason I like pantheons (like greek, roman, nordic, etc gods) over the church and the 1, or 3 in 1, God.
Because, the Bible supports many theories, that their believers vehemently despise. Like god and satan being the same entity, on top of the holy trinity. Among others.
Or, the fact that different people, follow specific parts, of the same book. The mormons, christians, catholics, jews, evangelists, etc, are ALL followers of the lord of the bible, but, they ALL don't agree on what parts are true, how certain things should be interpreted, etc, etc...
A pantheon on gods that argue and disagree and bicker, and fight, makes more sense to me, than a a god, who does nonsensical things, and all that...

In case you don’t know, the creator of this movie, Jorge R Gutierrez also created an animated series in Nickelodeon way back in 2007 called El Tigre The Adventures Of Manny Rivera, which is such an unfairly underrated series. It’s a superhero comedy show who the main character is Manny who becomes his alter ego El Tigre, who comes from a long family line of superheroes AND supervillains. His grandfather is a villain known as Puma Loco, while his dad is a superhero known as White Pantera (also yes, the theme in his family are large cats, which is pretty cool).
However, the thing with manny is that he doesn’t know what he wants to be, a hero or a villain, and both his dad and grandfather would often pressure him to good or bad things. Sadly it only got one season and the creator did planned a lot for it that is until freaking Nickelodeon cancelled it.
Now! One of the best things about Jorge’s creations is that they exist in the same universe. The book of life took place years before the events of el Tigre, and! Manny and Manolo are actually related!!! Manny’s Great-Grandfather was a hero known as Justice Jaguar and you know who was his sister??… manolo’s mother Carmen!! That makes manny and manolo as cousins! And to make things much more crazy, manny not only is related to manolo, but he is also Manolo’s reincarnation!! The creator confirmed that on his twitter/X

I like to think that he never really loved Maria romantically, but because of pressure from his friends and the village, he got the idea in his head that the only way hed be able to truly protect and love her was to marry and attatch himself to her. He felt like everything he had was something he earned or something to earn. I saw another commenter mention how he also didn't have a father like Monolo or Maria, and he seemed to enjoy the attention and pride he got from Maria's father. A detail I love about the movie is that you can tell who Maria chose early on by how she acts with Manolo and Joaquin. Like when she gets to the bull fight she acts like old friends with Joaquin her little “It’s really good to see you.” Is said how you would talk to a friend but then when Manolo dedicates the bull fight to her she gets disappointed because it’s not a song. Then there’s the song I Love You Too Much where she’s happy she finally got her song. And the biggest evidence is during Joaquin’s proposal where Maria is clearly not happy but then Manolo comes in and she smiles at him. Then when Joaquin asks if Manolo proposed Maria says no before happily asking if Manolo was going too. Like even before Manolo proposes you can tell who Maria chose

The creator and his wife also made a cartoon called "El Tigre" on Nickelodeon that was really good. It was about a Mexican superhero who had to deal with his dad being a popular hero and his grandpa being a popular villain.
They also made a more recent animated show on Netflix called "Maya and the 3" and I'd say it's more aesthetic than both Book of Life and Coco combined. I honestly hope they're doing well and that more people watch their stuff.

I think your misunderstanding the guy with the guitar (Manolo) at 6:18. I don't think he neccessarily assumed that the girl neccessarily liked more "passion or heartfelt" things, but that he just hoped that the girl and everyone else for that matter liked him for who he was, and it turned out the girl liked him for how genuine he was, while the other guy was forcing the persona that he was raised to fulfill and being fake, playing into the whole "machismo" role (look it up if your curious on the meaning or don't know "What is machismo culture in Mexico?"), which the girl didn't like as she could see through it easily. I haven't watched it in a while, but this is what I remember getting from it. Maybe I'm wrong. I actually like this movie a lot because of how they tackle this in Mexican culture. Not that machismo culture can't be for other cultures beside Mexican, but it's really heavy in Mexican culture and there are a lot of people I know and are family that are exactly like that guy, or even more into machismo culture to the point of pure toxicity, when they would be better off dropping the machismo act all together. This movie is defenitely anti-"machismo". I do agree with the cover songs. They could have use Mexican music and subtitled it and it would have been way better and a lot more genuine.

The thing is, I dont think Maria would've disliked Joaquin's whole macho personality if it was truly genuine. He was constantly seeking validation from others because of the fact that he had no real family and was separated from his friends. Maria could sense this and just wanted Joaquin to be himself, which is why she was genuinely touched when she learned that he kept her bonnet all those years

Saying that Coco is a rip off of the Book of Life would be like saying that every Santa based movie is a rip off the the previous or every Exodus movie is a rip off of the previous exodus movie. Its a movie that revolves around a similar base cultural lore. Coco and the Book of Life revolve around Mexican afterlife lore. Thats its foundation. 2 very different movies that pull on the same lore. There just isn't a lot of mainstream American films that are based around Mexican culture, so these are the only 2 movies a lot of people have in that category, so they get compared. As the old saying goes, "Don't put 2 queens against each other".
(but I loved both of them. I remember watching the Book of Life and just LOVING the art. And I saw Coco in theaters with my mom and her friend and they were both just SOBBING. It was such a great moment seeing 2 fully grown women, one your mother and the other who is basically your aunt, just openly weeping and in hysterics about the ending "remember me" song with Miguel and Grandma Coco. My mom's friend is Mexican and very in-touch with her heritage and, at the time, had recently lost HER mother to old age. So it just hit differently for her. And even though I was just a dumb teenager, I knew it was a privilege to witness someone connect with art to profoundly.)
What I think would be a super cool movie based on this same Mexican afterlife would be a story about a soul that has been in the afterlife for a while and is waiting for the rest of their family to reach them, but they never arrive even though, with the time that's past, they should've all died. Years would go by and finally that soul decides "Screw it, I miss them. I'll find them myself" and goes on an epic quest to find where their family has gone.
I don't know much about Mexican mythology, but I think it would be super cool.

I do disagree with the "storybook approach lowers the stakes" thing, mainly because we see at the end that Xibalba and La Muerta are real and thus implies that the events DID happen. They're just reading history, not a story that's fictional in-universe. That's just my take, though.

Yeah I do agree that both movies had the parents being iffy on the fact the protagonists wanted to do something music related (Manolo for Book of Life and Miguel for Coco) but for Coco it was Miguel's grandma that mostly prohibited it not his parents (although his parents case, yeah they were a bit iffy on it as well but how I interpreted it but they were a lot less harsh) however with Book of Life was that it was just the dad and when we met up with Manolo's mom later in the land of the remembered she actually wanted Manolo to follow his heart

I don’t know…I’m just a sucker for a good heartfelt story that involves family. I think it was really helpful to see a positive point of view on Mexican culture when it comes to Day of the Dead too, since my dad never talked about it or celebrated it because he perceived it as being evil. 😔 After watching Coco, I learned more about day of the dead and for whatever reason, it made me feel closer to that side of my family. 1. Joaquin is not just the mean, Chad antagonist to Manolo’s kind, gentle heart
    2. He did really care for Maria, it wasn’t all superficial, this si especially shown when he hesitates to marry her or with the bonnet
    3. They didn’t think that Manolo killed Maria, they blamed him because they were in grief and she was essentially ‘under his care’ at the time and he should’ve been protecting her
    4. You missed the part at the end where it’s revealed la muerte is the tour guide
There was probably more but me general point is that you looked at this movie with a really surface level sight, when that’s not what it deserves. I first watched it when I was 8 and I immediately understood, and fell in love with it.

On the bridge, Joaquin yells at Manolo for not protecting Maria, saying Manolo should have let the snake bite him instead of her. Again, the repeated idea of Manolo not being enough of a man for something that is outside of his control. Many people tell him he should do this or that, but the others can’t see why he can’t because they haven’t been in his personal situation.

Yes, Joaquin was in love with Maria. Yes, Manolo was his rival. HOWEVER, these two men have been best friends for YEARS now. Joaquin had no business saying something so horrible to Manolo and validating Manolo's negative thoughts when he was just desperately trying to explain that he was *trying* to protect Maria. And then when Manolo *actually* dies and Maria is *resurrected*, thus Joaquin getting his wish granted, he finally realizes that "Hey, maybe wishing my best friend died *wasn't* exactly what I wanted" like yeah, you sometimes say things you don't mean in an argument, but damn

I think this is obvious, but Coco is DEFINITELY better story-wise, and culturally. As a Mexican American myself, seeing my family who grew up in Mexico watch that movie and cry from the memories that it brought back was surreal, and I will never forget that as a part of my culture I never grew up with. Coco embodies way more the concept of what el Día de Los Muertos is about. And while Coco is more visually appealing because of the unique style, Coco is still very impressive visually because of the details in the Land of the Dead and the skeleton models. The colors, the lighting, the realism of it is just as spectacular. That being said, I did watch Book of Life and I LOVED IT. It was beautiful and the characters are great, and Joaquin is also underrated and doesn’t really deserve to be seen as the villain, when he isn’t. So, I would still say Coco is better, but the Book of Life is still amazing and still deserves the attention and love that it’s unfairly being deprived of.
Also, a detail you missed was that the townsfolk didn’t think Manolo killed Maria, but that they blamed him for her “death” because he failed to protect her. Joaquin literally says “Why didn’t you protect her?” Just wanted to clarify that.

Oh man, I really enjoyed this one. I actually liked it a lot more than The Box Trolls, which pains me to say because I LOVE Laika Studios and what they are doing with their films. But seriously...I loved The Book of Life. I will be going again.
First, I was actually surprised by the plot. I thought the trailers had basically spoiled all the big plot points, but it really hadn't. Second, this film reminded me of all the fantastic characters in Mexican mythology. This movie honestly left me wanting to see more of the two gods. :) Maybe a backstory of the first wager?! One can only hope. There main love story is fine, but the background love story seems great. I want to see that. And third, omg the animation...Reel FX should be damn proud by what they just produced. I saw it in 3D, which probably helped dim some of the bright colors haha. I know it's not for everyone, and sometimes it did feel overwhelming, but I just couldn't get enough. It felt like eye-candy, and I am sure that is what the desired effect was.
I really hope this movie is commercial success, because I want to see more by this studio and the director! I was chucking (if not laughing) throughout.

I once hated this movie cuz my little sis played it *24/7
I am serious it was the only movie we watched.
The dvd broke and I felt relief.
Decided to watch it after years of not seeing it and... Its way better than I remembered. I guess having it play nonstop just made me hate it. But I actually really like it now. Not a fan of the music, but other than that I like it. Its funny and the character design is neat.
    Also its hilarious
*"Ohh you picked a feisty one!"*
    *Gets punched*
Gets me and my siblings rolling every time

During “dias de los muertos” my family would actually have the movie playing on a projector in our front lawn because we love it so much.

Look people will like what they like and to me Coco just tackled Mexican families and the holiday of Dia De Los Muertos better than Book of Life…and I would have liked Book of Life more if the music was ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC!!!! Book of Life would take MUSIC WE HAVE ALL HEARD and made it sound Mexican when it ain’t Mexican like I would have loved for songs like Toro and I love u too much to be original songs that to me was good but when they added like music we’ve all heard from the radio and made it Mexican just wasn’t good to me

What I love Joaquin for is adverting expectations because he's NEVER twirling his mustache and boasting about how horribly he'll treat Maria after he weds her. When Captain Posada (I hate this man) guilt trips Maria to marry Joaquin, he immediately tries to insist that right after losing their BEST FRIEND is not an good time to force them together, but since he's never disobeyed Capt. Posada before, he's emotionally unable to right now. At the wedding, you can see that Joaquin is... sad. He didn't earn her heart, she was forced into this and he wanted their love to be real. (I could go on but I haven't seen the movie in a while)

that is honestly my fav detail about joaquin
      he's gaston
if gaston was actually a decent guy
he does genuinely love maria and does try to earnestly win her heart. he's a bit pompous and doesn't quite know maria as well as he thinks he does. but he has a good heart and he is just as devastated as maria at manolo's death.
