Ive read that Jack The Ripper seemed to represent how kid Jack was scared he was going to be this violent killer. Basically a manifestation of his anxiety and fear of becoming an evil dude whos gonna kill women, maybe even Acacia
im glad you said this, omg 😭 a long time ago, i theorized that he viewed jack the ripper as something he didn’t want to become/didnt want people to see him as (a monster). he also mentions them having the same name in the book and i think that makes it clear that it’s meant to be a parallel of sorts
i vividly remember being traumatized by this movie as a child to the point that every single nightmare i had for like a year after contained some element from this movie, i have not rewatched since
when i tell you my little brother absolutely terrorized me w this frrreaking movie for months. we watched it together as kids and it absolutely terrified me and he just loveddd talking ab this nightmare of a movie literally every. chance. he. got. 😭💀

Yeh it was creepy but it didnt give me nightmares... I rewatched it and its kinda good and the scene where they see for the first time and sing was lovely.
if i remember correctly either the book was based off a concept album or the concept album was based on the book - all i remember is out of the three the movie is the one that was made last (it uses the songs from the album) - so i guess they just tried fitting that one song that doesn't really have anything to do with the movie's plot into the movie as best as they could
What i find interesting is that the character designs of the movie kinda reminds me of the singer Kerli's first album cover and Jack off Jill's "clear hearts, grey flowers" album cover🤔 They both look like big-headed porcelain dolls.

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart (La Mécanique du Cœur) is a French fantasy novel by Mathias Malzieu, who is also the lead singer of the band Dionysos. The book was adapted into an animated movie in 2013, but some aspects of the story were toned down or censored in the film, making the book version slightly darker and more complex.
Aww I've been waiting for this for so long! Thank you! I feel like this was somewhat a passion project, that's why it comes out a little weird sometimes, it is full of symbolism that you have to interpret yourself, like in poetry (like when Acacia literally covers herself with thorns when she feels uncomfortable), but it made me listen to the soundtrack over and over for weeks
10:06 HOLY SHIT. I GUESSED IT. I KNEW IT. but also THANK YOU i have memories of watching this when i was a wee lad but i had forgotten the title and now i can finally rewatch it
The way you describe movies is honestly very captivating. You clearly care about representing the work honestly while giving your thoughtful takes on the films as a whole. You are definitely an underrated RUclipsr
love this movie so much and it finally just clicked for me that jack the ripper is probably symbolic or a sort of vision in jack’s head created by the guilt of thinking he murdered joe. i honestly could never wrap my head around that scene either, but i think it makes a lot of sense this way.
a great movie that defined my childhood. after a rewatch, i’m realizing there’s some weird kind of sexist remarks about Acacia that don’t hold up very well. that aside, the animation and story line are kind of masterpieces
👉In the novel, Jack’s birth is set in the context of a darker social environment. Madeleine’s house on the hill isn't just a place for quirky outcasts but also functions as a sort of refuge for women who are marginalized by society. Some women who come to her are described as those who were raped or had unwanted pregnancies. Madeleine, while skilled as a doctor and midwife, is also known for providing abortions to women who had nowhere else to turn. This detail adds a heavy and tragic layer to the setting. Jack’s mother is portrayed as desperate and destitute, likely pregnant out of wedlock, a situation that carries significant shame and stigma, especially during that time period (late 19th century Edinburgh). Her visit to Madeleine on the coldest day of the year hints at her lack of options and the extreme conditions she faces as a woman. Madeleine’s decision to save Jack’s life by installing the cuckoo-clock heart can be seen as both a blessing and a curse, as Jack becomes a literal mechanical outcast, much like the women who seek refuge in Madeleine’s home. 👉Madeleine’s Role In the movie, Madeleine is portrayed primarily as a quirky, maternal figure. However, in the book, she has a much more complex, even morally ambiguous role. Her house is seen as a last resort for women in desperate situations, and she sometimes performs dangerous operations on them, either helping them deliver their babies or end their pregnancies. This paints her not only as a healer but also as someone operating in the margins of society, helping those whom society rejects. Madeleine’s relationship with Jack is also more complicated in the book. While she loves him and wants to protect him, she is also the one who instills fear in him about falling in love, which later becomes the central conflict of his life. Her warnings about love are not just medical advice but also stem from her own bitterness and perhaps her understanding of the harsh realities of the world. 👉Jack’s Illegitimacy and the Father’s Identity While the movie downplays Jack’s parentage, the book makes it clear that Jack is the result of an illegitimate relationship. His mother’s refusal to reveal his father’s identity suggests that he may have been the product of an affair or perhaps even a non-consensual encounter. This casts a shadow over Jack’s birth and his early abandonment, as his mother leaves him with Madeleine shortly after giving birth and never returns. The book strongly hints that Jack’s mother was running away from her past, and Jack, with his mechanical heart, becomes a physical manifestation of that trauma. 👉Joe’s Cruelty In the book, Joe, the tall boy who bullies Jack, is much more sadistic. His jealousy of Jack over Miss Acacia turns into violent hatred, and the physical confrontations between the two are more intense. Joe represents the harshness of the real world that Jack, with his fragile mechanical heart, is ill-equipped to handle. Joe’s actions are a manifestation of the larger societal rejection Jack faces for being different. 👉Jack’s Emotional Struggle and the Tragedy of Love One of the central themes of the novel is Jack’s internal struggle with his emotions, particularly his feelings for Miss Acacia. While the movie portrays this relationship as a whimsical, ill-fated romance, the novel digs deeper into Jack’s psychological and emotional turmoil. He knows that falling in love could literally destroy him, but he is powerless to stop it. The cuckoo-clock heart becomes a metaphor for the fragility of the human condition and the inevitability of suffering when it comes to love. In the book, Jack's journey to Andalusia to find Miss Acacia is filled with longing, pain, and obsession. The novel explores the idea that love can be both beautiful and destructive, and Jack’s pursuit of love ultimately leads to his undoing. His mechanical heart, a symbol of his inability to fully engage with human emotions, eventually fails him. The novel suggests that love, while vital to life, is inherently dangerous and that the pursuit of it can lead to both joy and heartbreak. there is a lot more to this dark story....
Ahhhh this movie is one of my obscure faves, I always appreciate your channel talking about some of these obscure movies I was convinced only I enjoy! Also thank you for talking about the MUSIC in this movie, the song that plays over the final scene brings me to UGLY tears every time!
This is my favorite movie since I first saw it when I was little. I always thought of it as this odd story about different kinds of love and how powerfully it can affect us.
Wasn't one grave for Madeline, one for the hamster that got punted like a football, and one for was Jack when they told everyone that he died instead of telling them that he really ran away?
If you think the music are good, it's normal : the guy who wrote the book and who made the movie is also a singer. He's the voice of Jack in the french version. He wrote all the songs when he was writing the book, and all the characters are dubbed by singers of his friends. And fun fact, miss acacia is inspired by the singer olivia ruiz, who dubbed her in french and spanich, and at this period, olivia ruiz was in a relationship with matthias malzieu, the guy who wrote, realize and dubbed Jack, and after who the design of Jack is made And you need to listen the slammy songs of Joe in French : he got a voice so deep it's scarry, and so coool ! I love this movie with all my heart, the guy who wrote it has a very strange universe, but it's so imaginative. Also, the guy named George who invented a camera is actually a reference to George Mélies, the guy who made the movie with the moon and the bomb in her eye
Fun Fact! In the Fairy Acacia scene, it’s a metaphor for the fact he’s having a wet dream…! And this doesn’t just stop at the visuals, if you listen to the song “Le Berceuse hip hop du Docteur Madeleine” (also the same song that plays in the background of the scene) the lyrics literally state it.
I remember finding this movie as a kid and taking a while before actually watching it with it in my queue, and I remember having basically the same reaction to it but don’t remember anything except that beginning scene where it starts the story and the very end. I should probably rewatch it
I honestly love this movie but will also admit that parts of it are like... an unsettling acid trip. Overall though it's a beautiful and poignant story, and really beautiful aesthetically.
I loved this weirdo movie when I was in middle school, I still occasionally listen to the music and the visuals are super cool. Plus you gotta love a suprise Jack the Ripper scene, because if I had a nickel for every time that's happened I'd have two nickels, which it's really really weird that it happened twice.
I remember being sick one day and I was in my moms bedroom all day watching Netflix movies, I eventually watched this and it's the only movie I still remember from that day it just stuck in my mind for years
i watched this movie as a kid because it's quite popular in france, and then rewatched it at like, 12 years old and made it my entire personality. i've always loved the creepy but also cute and poetic vibes, and how slightly nonsensical and whimsical universe. many backgrounds characters have these cool quirks and designs. i really recommend listening to the album "La mécanique du coeur", which is by the band Dionysos. the singer of this band is the author of the book the film is based on and the album is REALLY good. overall, i just love the fairytale vibes of this movie, and how artistic, funny and emotional it is
I really need to take the time to watch all the movies you’ve reviewed that I haven’t seen because you only seem to cover stuff I’m really interested in. And everything you talk about that I have seen are movies I already love lol
Hi! The scene in the ghost train is a wink to the writer of the book, director of the movie and finally voice actor of Jack, Mathias Malzieu who has a band called Dionysos. It the french version of the greek god's name and "os" is "bone" in french so the skeletons are a play on words. Also it was one of my favourites growing up (I didn't watch the dvd that many times but I know the somgs by heart). I am surprised that the songs are well translated and sung in the english version. Even if it cannot compare to the original french ;)
I loved this movie as a child, and I still do to this day! I had it in French as a child, but the music has always really stood out to me in both the English and French versions!
I LOVVVVEEEDDD this movie when it first came out on Netflix it really inspired my art for a couple years, it was the perfect mix of surrealism w a quirky style
Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart always had sexual undertones this is literally one of the songs in the bands Dionysos songs litterally has the name of a female part as its title it says “[Redacted] Mon Amour” When Jack first meets Acadcia swirls appear on her chest. The movie had a lot of sexual undertones The sexual undertones were there and even more so in the album I think than in the movie, most likely to tone it down for a younger audience even tho I would t recommend this movie to children. This movie was my favorite growing up and still is, it’s so unique and I loved it. No wonder one of my favorite games is Lies of P, and I prefer foreign films over movies made in the US
I laughed so hard that I choked on my water at the ripping clothes off with the teeth, but yea, it is disturbing that it would be in a kids' movie. I would say this is more for like teenagers based on those sexual undertones.
This movie owes its hauntingly unique character designs/art direction to Italian pop surrealist, Nicoletta Ceccoli. One of my all time favorite painters, her work is mesmerizing and deserves so much more recognition!! If you love Alice in Wonderland themes, medieval symbolism and dark fantasy, please check her out!
I watched this movie countless of times even during childhood because I just love it, the music is great and the characters are amazing. This movie has my heart and I'll always be glad to rewatch it any time of the day, it brings me comfort
little tip to fully understand the "weird" moments of the movie, rewatch it as many times as possible, it will start to click after a few rewatches. I re-discovered the movie after a few years of just remembering it being a childhood favorite, and its still a favorite. The music for this film is my favorite part because it was made by an actually talented band called Dionysos (Dionysos "cameos" in the movie during the Ghost Train sequence, and the lead singer Mathias I think does both the English and French voice for Jack, not sure tho) Check out Dionysos though, genuinely great stuff. I recommend the French soundtrack over the English though. There was also a cut song from the movie called "Tais-Toi Mon Coeur". There's a music video of it up on youtube, and it's personally one of my favorite tracks from the movie's album. Actually thank you for reviewing this. You've been one of my favorite youtubers for a while, and Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart has been SUPER underrated and obscure for so long, I'm glad more people like you are talking about it and giving it a chance.

This animated film stuck with me as a small child and I thought about it for weeks because of how it traumatized me with that ending
YES FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING BOUT THIS MOVIE WOOOOOO
I watched this 8-9 years ago with a friend of mine, I absolutely hated it, but it might just be how my friend reacted to it, by the end she was bawling like a baby, digging her finger nails into my arm, mumbling an almost unintelligible "it's so sad" until she was screaming it into my ear..... good times.
This film was my CHILDHOOD !!! The ending broke me and the character designs are just chefs kiss. It has my heart 💖
So happy you reviewed this. One of my favorite movies fr
Finally!! I loved this movie as a kid and recently rewatched it was trying to find if u covered it but u didnt but FINALLY!!! Thank u so much Pig 🙌
👉Madeleine’s Role
In the movie, Madeleine is portrayed primarily as a quirky, maternal figure.
👉Jack’s Illegitimacy and the Father’s Identity
While the movie downplays Jack’s parentage, the book makes it clear that Jack is the result of an illegitimate relationship.
👉Joe’s Cruelty
In the book, Joe, the tall boy who bullies Jack, is much more sadistic.
👉Jack’s Emotional Struggle and the Tragedy of Love
One of the central themes of the novel is Jack’s internal struggle with his emotions, particularly his feelings for Miss Acacia.
I've been eyeballing this movie for a while on the YT free movie section. Might actually watch it just to hear the music
Bro i love your channel so much because you find some old nostalgic animated films i used to love as a kid and just remind me of them nice job😊
I’ve been watching you since 7th grade (I’m in 12th rn) and i love every video that pops up on my feed
I loved this movie! It's definitely got a weird vibe sometimes, cool to see u talk about it!!!
OMG FINALLY SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS MOVIE
If you think the music are good, it's normal : the guy who wrote the book and who made the movie is also a singer. He's the voice of Jack in the french version. He wrote all the songs when he was writing the book, and all the characters are dubbed by singers of his friends. And fun fact, miss acacia is inspired by the singer olivia ruiz, who dubbed her in french and spanich, and at this period, olivia ruiz was in a relationship with matthias malzieu, the guy who wrote, realize and dubbed Jack, and after who the design of Jack is made
And you need to listen the slammy songs of Joe in French : he got a voice so deep it's scarry, and so coool !
I should probably rewatch it
everytime when they first sing all I see are stars gives me goosebumps tbh
I honestly love this movie but will also admit that parts of it are like... an unsettling acid trip. Overall though it's a beautiful and poignant story, and really beautiful aesthetically.
I loved this weirdo movie when I was in middle school, I still occasionally listen to the music and the visuals are super cool. Plus you gotta love a suprise Jack the Ripper scene, because if I had a nickel for every time that's happened I'd have two nickels, which it's really really weird that it happened twice.
I used to watch this all the time as a kid and absolutely loved it. Awesome to see you go over this
I remember being sick one day and I was in my moms bedroom all day watching Netflix movies, I eventually watched this and it's the only movie I still remember from that day it just stuck in my mind for years
i watched this movie as a kid because it's quite popular in france, and then rewatched it at like, 12 years old and made it my entire personality. i've always loved the creepy but also cute and poetic vibes, and how slightly nonsensical and whimsical universe. many backgrounds characters have these cool quirks and designs. i really recommend listening to the album "La mécanique du coeur", which is by the band Dionysos. the singer of this band is the author of the book the film is based on and the album is REALLY good. overall, i just love the fairytale vibes of this movie, and how artistic, funny and emotional it is
Sounds like the title of a Samurai Jack episode.
YOU FINALLY COVERED THIS MOVIE YESSSSSSSSS
I really need to take the time to watch all the movies you’ve reviewed that I haven’t seen because you only seem to cover stuff I’m really interested in. And everything you talk about that I have seen are movies I already love lol
This has been my favorite movie since I was little, glad to see someone cover it !
If anyone was able to watch this film at the earliest release of it. You're all legends.
I LOVVVVEEEDDD this movie when it first came out on Netflix it really inspired my art for a couple years, it was the perfect mix of surrealism w a quirky style
literally one of my favorite movies ever
i found this movie as a kid & fell deeply in love, no one ever know wtf i was referring to, thank you for giving this movie the props it deserves!
Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart always had sexual undertones this is literally one of the songs in the bands Dionysos songs litterally has the name of a female part as its title it says “[Redacted] Mon Amour”
When Jack first meets Acadcia swirls appear on her chest. The movie had a lot of sexual undertones
The sexual undertones were there and even more so in the album I think than in the movie, most likely to tone it down for a younger audience even tho I would t recommend this movie to children.
One of my fav comfort shows! So glad you made a video on this
This movie owes its hauntingly unique character designs/art direction to Italian pop surrealist, Nicoletta Ceccoli. One of my all time favorite painters, her work is mesmerizing and deserves so much more recognition!! If you love Alice in Wonderland themes, medieval symbolism and dark fantasy, please check her out!
The obsession i have with this movie is unreal its definitely a special interest it captured my heart the second i watched it as a child ❤❤
This movie felt more like a series of interconnected music videos than a movie
FINALLY SOMEONE REVIEWED THIS!! It’s so bizarre and burtonesque. Thank you for reviewing this masterpiece!
YEEEEEES THANK YOU FOR FINALY COVERING THIS MASTERPIECE
I watched this movie countless of times even during childhood because I just love it, the music is great and the characters are amazing. This movie has my heart and I'll always be glad to rewatch it any time of the day, it brings me comfort
little tip to fully understand the "weird" moments of the movie, rewatch it as many times as possible, it will start to click after a few rewatches. I re-discovered the movie after a few years of just remembering it being a childhood favorite, and its still a favorite. The music for this film is my favorite part because it was made by an actually talented band called Dionysos (Dionysos "cameos" in the movie during the Ghost Train sequence, and the lead singer Mathias I think does both the English and French voice for Jack, not sure tho)
Check out Dionysos though, genuinely great stuff.
I LOVE this movie so much 😭 and no one ever talks about it or knows what it is. I’ve shown it to so many people and no one likes it but for some reason it captured my heart the first time I ever watched it.
Haven’t watched it yet, but ah man, I’m glad pig is covering this. I loved this movie growing up, it was my favorite for a long time.
