I was about to say that! I don't know if it's a transation thing (I've only watched the movie in Spanish) but I feel more like Victor's family have money because they have their own business, but they aren't part of the high society. Marrying Victor with Victoria will give them a place there. And Victoria's parents want Victor's family money.
Yea Victor's family gets a good royal like status so they can intermingle with high society. And victorias family gets money so they won't go on the streets, it's a tit for tat as Victoria's parents said.
My parents love to tell the story of how I, as a small child, would watch this movie religiously, and every single time cry so hard when Emily turned into butterflies. then again, I also cried when donkey turned back into a donkey after being a horse in the second Shrek movie, so I think I just cry when beautiful things go away.
Donkey is still beautiful. I cry a lot. I cried on my exes lap like a baby during How To Train Your Dragon 3. Ohh boy and don’t get me started on Forrest Gump
I think it's lovely. Not alot of films have love like that. Everyone is possessive and jealous and cray or there are no problems but external ones that the lovers have to overcome. Yeah this is refreshing.
The fact the he recognized him in his skeletal form amazes me because my grandfather passed away when I was so little and I recall so little about him. Then there is another grandfather whom I refuse to associate myself with....
@@msk-qp6fn Hey we ain't judging, you don't have to associate yourself with anyone you don't want to. Even if they're "Family", you have your own reasons and people should respect that.
@@Internatube Characters typically have wants (their main goal in the story) as well as a need (which is usually the conclusion to their character arc or growth). In some cases, the want and need are complimentary, but it's usually more compelling when they're not. In this case, Emily's want was to fulfill her bridal dreams that were denied to her. She THOUGHT that her need was to marry Victor, when really, her need was justice and peace. She also needed to let go of Victor in order to move on. So, she had to give up her want to get her need, which is why her ending is so bittersweet.
I feel like it’s really subtle, but how I interpreted Victor’s decision to die like this: It’s been implied throughout the movie that Victor is quiet and has low-self esteem (he can barely practice wedding vows for a person he just met, he’d rather draw or play piano then socialize, and he doesn’t have the same objections that Victoria has about the marriage.) He just goes along with what his parents want. This sort of implies he is used to not thinking or acting for himself. He is also very timid. So, when he learns Victoria is getting married to another man, his thought process may very well have been, “Well, I guess she doesn’t love me like I do her, we have only known each other for a few days, that person is probably better than me anyways,” etc etc. While also being pressured by the Underworld to be with Emily, and seeing her so distraught, he figures he can still at least make her happy and decides to die. (My point being, he has never lived his life for himself, and has made decisions solely based on what others want from him, and to please others.) He also values Emily as a friend, so he feels it is the right thing to do since his other role has been taken by someone else (ie Victoria will be fine and happy). It is only when he realizes that she does love him, and that Baccius is actually a scheming murderer, (added to that is the confidence Emily was building in him), that he sees his worth and decides to do what he wants (marry Victoria). He still fulfills his promise to Emily in the end by setting her free.
I agree actually! Upon first viewing I was really sad Emily and Victor wasnt end game but upon the 2nd viewing yiur comment was my thought process almost to a tea! Especially since from the start Victor has contiously yearned to go back to Victoria
That’s exactly how I saw it too. He didn’t love Emily. He loved Victoria and dying for Emily was avoiding the confrontation of seeing Victoria with someone else. And he reconciled with himself that he and Emily would make a good couple because of their interactions and things they had in common. It wasn’t love, it was compatibility and the easier option for him that would please everyone.
I thought the same thing. While I would have loved to have seen Victor's song included, I can also understand why they cut it, and I think the movie still works without it. I always saw Victor's 180 decision as him being heartbroken after realizing Victoria is getting married to someone else. Not jealous like Emily, just heartbroken. Like you said, I think he assumes Victoria will be better off with Bacchis, because he doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself and he doesn't think trying to stand up to him will work. I also think he realizes that without Victoria, there's not much left for him in the world of the living. His parents don't seem to care about him. Victoria's family definitely doesn't care about him. The world he lives in is dull and grey and people seem to value rules and traditions over caring for one another. The same way that Victoria appears "drained of life" when she realizes she has to marry Baccius, Victor also becomes drained of life with that realization. The only person who did actually love him or bring him any real joy in life is about to marry someone else, and he believes there's nothing he can do about it. So in his heartbreak, he makes an impulsive choice. He no longer cares about his life, and agrees to die, because at least in the afterlife there is one person who loves him, even if he doesn't 100% reciprocate those feelings. It's dark, but hey...this is a Tim Burton movie. I feel like the scene in which Victor agrees to die and marry Emily feels rushed on purpose. Victor is sad and being impulsive. He does care about Emily but it's not true love. He just hopes that maybe the both of them can be happier than he would have been if he'd chosen to remain alive. It's a little selfish, but tbh I don't think you can really blame him. All Victor wants is to be loved by someone...anyone, even a dead woman. I also think this is why he falls in love with Victoria so quickly. She's the first person, probably in his whole life, who showed any actual genuine care for him. And I also think this leads into why Emily decides to let him go in the end. She can see that Victor loves Victoria so much, that he'd literally rather die without her. And I think the moment Emily realizes this is the moment she also realizes she doesn't want to ruin it. She realizes that Victoria deserves to be loved by someone who actually loves her. And furthermore, she realizes that Victor deserves to be loved by someone during his life, not just after it. I think the reason why so many people love The Corpse Bride is because of this theme. Love is what makes life worth living, and what makes death less tragic.
A cute detail someone else mentioned about the wedding rehearsal is that Victor accidentally takes 4 steps forward and knocks into the table because he gets distracted looking at Victoria. That’s just so adorable I felt it was necessary to point out
Emily was a beautiful case of of someone who broke the cycle of tragedy despite her trauma. She's fun and whimsical but she proved herself to be kind and selfless, which endeared her to us and made her memorable.
I wish more movies did that. Beetlejuice is one of the only other's i could think of. I want a story that does it seriously like Burton does it comically i want someone shot in the head to look like it for instant and for the story to show it as bleak as it would be. American werewolf in london is one of the few other's that comes to mind
It's been theorized that Victor from Frankenweenie is actually a descendant of Corpse Bride Victor and when you look into it does make a lot of sense. The Fangirl did a great video on this theory
Emily's "death" (technically not since she was already dead, but it feels like one) at the end always makes me tear up, without fail. just hearing you describe it made me cry. I'm glad she's free but her life was so tragic. I wanna hug that woman, even though she'd probably fall apart if squeezed too tightly. 😂
If it makes you feel any better, I'm pretty sure the damage to her body would be minimal, if there is any damage at all. Depending on where you hug, I'm thinking a compression of the ribcage. Since there's already a hole in her chest, I'm sure it would be an easy fix. Plus, she loses and reattaches whole parts of her body with no trouble. To make things even less unpleasant, she doesn't feel pain anymore. And if you help fix any damage to her body, I'm sure she'd be quite grateful.
When you say “weddings aren’t about love, they’re about tradition,” I’d like to point you to my uncle’s wedding, where the MC introduced the bride and groom like a WWE announcer. THAT is love. 😂
To be fair, most weddings are boring and traditional. Now, there are SOME people out there that do break away from the mold and actually make their weddings fun and unique.
This movie did the best job at making a little kid (me and others i suppose) accept death not as just sad, but also as a necessary part of life, that can be beautiful in itself. It's so hard to do that, but whenever death makes me anxious, this movie soothes me and that song helps a lot.
It’s funny you say that because when seeing this in theaters for the first time, this film actually made my older sister very afraid of death as a kid. I always found it beautiful and it kind of started my curiosity with death I think.. I’m not sure why this film frightened her, I just know whenever I mention it she always has to bring up how it scared her lol
@@KingOfGaymes Maybe it was because Emily didn’t get what she wanted and had to just accept her fate as it was. What I’M afraid of is how death is portrayed in Coco. How you die your first death and then when no one is left to put your picture up on the ofrenda that’s when you die your final death. That’s not even my culture and it scares the hell outta me!!!
I honestly just always assumed Victor changed his mind so quickly because he heard at that point that Victoria was getting married to someone else, he assumed he wasn't an option anymore. So, I assumed he just felt quite bad for Emily and after their moment he thought it would be worth it to make Emily happy and with their moment at the piano (the same way he had his first moment with Victoria who I also assume was his first real interaction with a woman) he could probably be happy with her. Kind of like he was going to be the selfless one, but then they turned it on us. I assume that song could help explain it better tho as you said.
I think the reason why Victor didn't decide to stop Victoria's weddings is a combination of a few things: everyone thinks he ran off with another woman, he messed up the vows and nobody thinks he's serious, his self esteem issues, and Victoria's parents would not let him near Victoria if he did come back.
im a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope(as long as is not toxic of course)anya and dimitri, annika and aiden But Victor and Victorias love story is so unique it’s like all the love tropes combined into one, and I love it.
But Victor and Victoria were never enemies. They only questioned the marriage BEFORE meeting each other and AFTER meeting, they both seemed to really like each other and eventually fall in love. Nowhere in the story were they ever enemies. Your analogy makes 0 sense. Did you even watch the movie?
@@Ari-rm9xw So kids can't fall in love with other kids then? I'm sorry Ms. Woke liberal SJW cancel culture, your dumb glasses fell off. I didn't know kids weren't capable of feeling love or having a crush of their age, it's almost like if they aren't human, wow.
1 thing: Victoria’s family is from “old money” But I think the dad said like bad investments or something made them destitute and so they are marrying off Victoria to victors family because they are “new money”
Doesn’t this take place in England? Their society cares more about class more than money in that time period, if you don’t have a title you are just some commoner regardless of the money you have, like same reason why British media made a big deal about Prince William marrying Kate who’s a commoner but her parents are millionaires
My favourite part of the movie was all the corpses just being happy for Emily. They all just love and support her so much, they just want to see her happy. It was such a pure wholesome moment.
I love this movie so much. Victor's decision to marry Emily and die was a reaction to Victoria seemingly moving on and him feeling bad for messing up the vows & embarrassing his family. He spent the beginning of the movie wanting to get to Victoria. He felt like there was nothing left to live for and he saw Emily as a friend and he felt bad for her situation so, he thought marrying her was the best thing to do. Once he goes to the land of the living and Lord Barkis reveals himself he's a lot more sure of himself. Victor and Victoria were meant to be. Emily grew during the movie. I just love how each character went through their own journey. Emily learned to let go and she was finally able to pass over. Victoria became more assertive and daring in her attempts to help Victor. Victor also gained confidence throughout the movie as well.
I watched corpse bride when I was like 7 years old. It didn’t scare me but I cried like a bitch when it was over. Every time I watch it I feel like a kid again and yeah I think this formed what I believe love to be. Something that can be so strong and profound as to transcend something as final as death.
I think it was more the fact that not that he loved her but more that he was so heart broken that Victoria was marrying someone else that he decided to just commit to Emily. Hope that makes sense.
The unused song really should've been put in. It explains his internal dilemma and why he doesn't go back to the living world immediately. Also I just rlly liked it and think it makes more sense.. also it's like a minute and 54 seconds... like it would still be a short movie even if that was in it I don't understand why they cut it.
I, personally, think victor is the other victors grandpa. This victor is clearly from an older time, and I think it makes a ton of sense. Sometimes people get their names and looks from their grandparents, and maybe some pits of their personality. This explains the difference of parents, them both having a thing with death, them both having dogs, and many other things. But thats just a theory, A FILM THERORY-
I've always felt that one of Tim Burton's thematic trademarks is the contrasting color palettes. Also seen in Edward Scissorhands, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and to a more subtle effect Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice.
Corpse Bride is such a fucking beautiful movie... My aunt had me watch it as a kid and I been in love with it ever since! 😊 (By the way - Mayhew the coach rider didn't 'just die out of nowhere', he seemingly dies from pneumonia or a violent coughing fit from the weather)
I think you'd probably get a kick out of Over the Garden Wall too, Pig. I don't know if it's on your radar, but it's a short series that is definitely perfect for the spooky season and has a lot of great visuals and art and music.
This movie does have a bittersweet ending, but I think that's why it's fondly remembered. In Western animation (i.e. Disney, DreamWorks) there's a goal of having a happy ending. Even Coco with its depressing themes presented throughout (visiting family being inaccessible to certain groups, someone dying young...) still presents the satisfying happy ending for the main characters. Whereas Corpse Bride is almost like a French animated film: acknowledges that not everything worked out but at least certain things have improved.
Do I as an adult understand that Emily probably fell in love with the idea of being loved rather than Victor himself? Yes I do understand that and accept and respect that's how it played out...HOWEVER the selfish person within me can not let go of the want for Victor to die and be with Emily. This is no hate to Victoria I just didn't feel the investment in her relationship with Victor. After hundreds of times of watching this movie I still can't connect with their relationship. I accept their relationship and others that like it, I just can't change my opinion of wanting Emily and Victor to spend eternity in the afterlife together with Scraps!
Same tbh. It was a long time since I watched the movie so I probably have some things wrong. I however remember a fair amount about Emily and nearly nothing about Victoria which I believe says a lot about which character I connected more with in my teens. I remember Victoria mostly as Victor’s love-interest (as well as the fact she’s got terrible parents) while I remember Emily as an interesting character with a well-developed personality and backstory of her own. We also see a lot more of Victor’s interactions with Emily than his interactions with Victoria and I can imagine that makes many viewers a bit biased. It’s possible I would feel differently if I saw the movie today (though I honestly doubt it considering I love Victor/Emily almost as much as Jack/Sally in Nightmare Before Christmas) but I have a hard time seeing my sympathy and connection with Emily not getting in the way.
I think I get what you mean, we, the audience, fall for Emily 💙💙🦋🦋 But Victor is in love with Victoria. And we're told that, but she pales (No pun intended) compared to Emily. I agree that I prefer Emily, but that's just because of my personal preferences.
But without Victor, Victoria would live a marriage with no love, and probably find the same fate as Emily. Victor thought marrying Emily would be a selfless act, but Emily saw that is was a selfish act on her part.
@@sunny-lm2np If you read my comment then you would know I literally acknowledged that they weren't in love and that she was just in love with the idea of him aka the idea of being someone's true love. Like I understand and comprehend that, but my selfish brain just has this little part where yeah I wanted him to die and for them to be together. And I'm not upset it was meant to be a playful comment of my opinion I'm over dramatic in the way I present myself.
I really think that Victor's sudden change of heart to marry Emily was just as he overheard her saying that she could never ask him to give up his life for her and that entirely selfless act in his interest made him realize that she really does care about him and want him to be happy and he wants the same for her and after hearing this he is a little more comfortable with the idea of spending the rest of his life (ironic ik) with her. Definitely would love to hear the song with him experiencing the dilemma though it would've made that decision a lot less rushed and a little less nonsensical.
I would just like to add that I think the real reason why Tim Burton's character in Frankenweenie is called "Victor" is because it's stemming from the original Frankenstein, as in the novels itself. In the original Mary Shelley novel, "Victor Frankenstein" is the name of the science scholar who is telling the story of how he created a monster. I don't think it has any relation to Victor from Corpse Bride. But it is still an interesting theory nonetheless.
I think another correlation is that Victor is just a really really fitting name for a creepy spoopy setting. It just fits Maybe Victor in Corpse Bride could be a Sebastian or Christopher, but it wouldnt be the same, especially with Victor - Victoria thing
It's always a trip to show people oingo boingo and telling them the lead singer and Bojangles the skeleton are the same person, Danny Elfman is a fantastic singer
I love this movie because I’ve loved it for different reasons through out my life and when I look back at it it kinda shows me how I’ve matured. Like in middle school, I liked it because it was different and edgy and about “true love” but I hated that Emily and Victor didn’t end up in the end. I saw myself in Emily and I didn’t see her get her “happy ending” because she didn’t end up w the guy. Now, I still relate to Emily, but I realize that this is her happy ending and that’s okay. Like she became happy with herself and her place in the world enough to be at peace, in spite of not achieving her romantic goals. Idk if I’m describing that right but I just like the way that it reflects my own personal philosophies about love, it’s just kinda neat lol
Corpse bride is easily one of my favorite tim burton movies, hands down. I agree with all the main points here, it's just beautiful and fun in so many ways
I love everything about this movie. It was beautifully made, the music is amazing, and the story never fails to make me secretly cry. I relate to all three characters in a strange way. Emily having to come to terms that Victor wasn’t for her, Victor’s battle to get back to Victoria and Victoria wanting Victor to get back before she gets trapped in a loveless marriage. I absolutely adore the vows and can’t wait for one day to say them in my own.
I love this movie, it has such a fond place in my heart ❤️ The thing about the families, Victorias family has a higher status but no money while Victors family has a lot of money but not the status. They both want to use one another to get what they don’t have 😊
I remember going to see this movie in theaters with my mom when I was a kid, it was a great time :) The entire "Remains of the Day" sequence is a marvel to see on the big screen.
Your criticisms were spot on, I feel. This movie is just so beautiful and it makes you love it so much! But the more you love it the more frustrated you get that it didn't get quite the script polish/extra scenes that it deserved.
i think what i like about this movie is the idea of "yeah. death is scary but it's not that bad. we all die but live the best life to enjoy your afterlife". weirdly enough: my mind randomly thought about what would happen if i just died and never went anywhere... then i just kind of overlooked it cause that is some many many years away for me to think about.
I'm absolutely in love with the way you explain these movies... It's just the right amount of goofy moments and the seriousness at the same tom. It made me so happy you did a review on my favourite film! This film is honestly the best in every way. We really appreciate your hard work:) thank you 🫂
I like to think victor made the decision to go with emily because he thought he wouldnt have a chance with victoria since she was getting married after she found out about emily.
I actually heard the Elena and Necrophiliac story from Ask a Mortician's Caitlin Doughety on her channel. Her topics relating to death and dead bodies are so educational and entertaining, I'd highly recommend the channel!
Still feel a bit melancholic whenever Emily turns into butterflies. Rewatching again as an adult is like "Oh, I understand now" *still cries* Such a beautiful movie.
I love that you highlight the behind the scenes stuff of this movie cause it's so cool! I had this movie on DVD as a kid and I constantly would rewatch the special features and behind the scenes because they were basically like magic to me as a young wannabe artist
I would love to hear more about what you said at the beginning of the video! How movies tend to get love wrong and makes people think it's supposed to be a certain way. That would be a really interesting video!
I just watched corpse bride last night again! One of my childhood favorites, I even plan on having the vows they use in the movie at my own wedding some day :)
15:03 was absolutely perfect. I haven't seen this movie, but I will definitely be watching it soon. The creepy intro that gave a backdrop to the movie was entertaining, and I enjoyed hearing the behind the scenes stories.
I was 11 years old when Corpse Bride came out and I went to see it in the theaters. This movie changed my life in every single way... It helped me realize what I wanted to do with my life, it introduced me my very first celerity hero (Tim Burton), and it even gave me the very first crush I've ever had on anyone, Victor Van Dort! From the beauty of the sets and new age stop motion animation to a twisted take on love and loss, this is easily the most influential movie of my life. Every October, I watch this classic and through the years, it has always remained just as special as it was when I was a kid... This is a piece of art that has always followed me and I hope it always will
The movie is actually based on a 17th-century Jewish folktale that Burton was introduced to called "The Finger". The original story is inspired by real events in Russia, when pogroms would sweep Ashkenazi Jewish communities and many would-be brides were murdered still in their wedding gowns and later thrown into shallow graves.
Am I the only one who questions how she knew that Scraps was his dog? She literally says that she knew he'd be happy to see him, so she didn't just grab a random dog corpse and hope he liked it. She knew that was his old dog.
if I remember right Emily could talk to animals. It was shown just before the Elder Gutknecht scene. So I guess Scraps told her himself that Victor was his owner 🤔
Just a theory but I feel like family trees and death certificates would be a common thing to have down there in a library or archive of some sort so maybe she could’ve just had a peep at something like that to see if there were any dead family pets?
I appreciate you telling the story of Carl, or more importantly Elaina. I have only heard Ask A Mortician tell this story, and it is a really interesting one.
I watched this movie so much as a kid that the disc was scratched from how much it ran in the DVD player. This was and is literally my favorite movie of all time.
Just wanted to point out that Mayhew, the horse coach, was a heavy smoker and died because of that, I think maybe his heart stopped. I see that someone else already corrected about Victor's family. Anyway, great video :D
Dead dogs tend to be a recurring thing in Tim Burton movies. When he was a kid, his family dog was hit by a car and Burton never really got over the grief. The incident wound up being the inspiration for his original Frankenweenie short film (and the remake), and why Victor and Jack Skellington both have undead pet dogs.
I personally think they really couldn’t have picked anyone better for Lord Barkis than Richard E. Grant. His voice is just so smooth and charismatic yet so sinister at the same time.
There's a theory that Emily was Victoria's older sister. Baucus stole the family jewels that Emily brought with her. So the reason as to why Victoria's family was destitute was because Baucus stole everything. Possibly never met Emily's parents or Emily probably knew they wouldn't approve.
Here’s my take on why I love it; it’s just my personal opinion, so feel free to agree or not. To start, the cinematography was stunning-the lighting, the metaphors, and the symbolism were all breathtaking. Emily begins as this joyful, optimistic girl, but a voice in her head continually reminds her of her past, like a faint, persistent echo. Even though she's afraid, she tries to love Victor, who keeps running away. It’s as if her fears are unfolding before her eyes. In the scene where Victor meets Victoria, when she says she is the bride and tries to be proud in front of Victoria, Victor says no, like a hammer striking her heart ; shattering her self respect. I relate to Emily here-I have my own trust and abandonment issues from past experiences. You try giving someone all your love, but they keep looking elsewhere, and it leaves you feeling terrible. Especially, it hurts when you realize they don’t really love you like you love them. Well here, worse, Victor doesn’t even love Emily. One powerful moment was when Victor calls Emily "the other woman." She tries so hard, only to be labeled as something she’s not. Victor isn’t necessarily wrong, and Emily understands that too. He did ask for her hand, maybe not as seriously as he did with Victoria, but he did ask. Yet, Emily is called the other woman and she must still make the sacrifice of letting him go. At one point, Emily says she was in the dark so long that she forgot the beauty of moonlight. Meeting Victor allows her, for a moment, to be herself again and have a glimmer of happiness after all her pain. At first, she hides her “brokenness”-her falling arm or her eyes-trying hard to keep Victor from seeing. Throughout the movie, she’s constantly reminded of how broken she is. After Victor calls her the “other woman,” she sings about how Victoria is alive and she isn’t. Her friends say that Victor doesn’t know her-the real Emily, who can play piano and has a wonderful personality. But she knows the truth: even with all her good qualities, she will never be alive like Victoria, nor will Victor ever love her. I resonate with this-no matter my qualities, no one seems to truly see me. I’m not “tragically beautiful” enough for someone to look past my flaws and love me. What i have to offer is in other girls and with even better qualities too. I must work hard and hide away my faults like Emily to be loved. Sure, maybe like Emily, I will also be begging for love, I’ll keep hoping for it, only to end up as “the other woman.” Victoria is a sweet girl, impossible to hate, and Victor has every right to love who he truly wants. Emily can’t force Victor or blame Victoria. But what about her? She lost everything, was never truly loved, always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Nobody recognizes her pain. Like the fake duke says, "Can a heart break if it’s already broken?" For me, this is like a reminder: after all that’s happened, can I even still love? Am I even capable of it? In the end, Emily loves Victor enough to selflessly let him go. She knows he’s not hers, and she allows Victor and Victoria their happiness. They don’t owe anything to Emily’s suffering. But for Emily, it’s heartbreaking-she sacrificed everything to be loved, only to be betrayed and have it all taken from her. When she thought her suffering might finally pay off, it was stripped away again. She had to be the “bigger person” and sacrifice what she wanted most. To me, this is a reminder that no matter how much I suffer, there’s no guarantee that life will ever “make up for it.” I could live my entire life and never get the thing I want most. Some people say Victor did choose Emily, but did he really? It felt more like he chose her only because he couldn’t have Victoria. Emily was always the second choice, never the first. Just the “other woman,” always the one to be left behind.
every time my mom would take us to family video (a video renting place) I would always grab the corpse bride. and then once she bought it for me I would watch it Coraline and James and the giant peach in a row over and over. I know a lot about the Carl tanzler case I’ve listened to a few podcast about it because I became so interested after hearing about it. He supposedly had visions of one of his ancestors telling him his wife is supposed to be this beautiful “exotic” woman. Also he just up and left his wife and kids. It was also Alaina’s sister who discovered this was going on and brought the police. One day she went to Carl and was like hey you’re the only one with a key to the mausoleum so give it to me because I want to see my sister and then Carl was like oh you can see her now she’s right upstairs in my bedroom. The sister didn’t believe that was Alaina she thought it was a doll but then they did test to confirm that it was Alaina.
I’ve waited so long for this video! This movie is such a masterpiece, I always admired this movie for how contrasted and visually pleasing the movie was with amazing music! I’ve watched this ever since I was 4 and honestly- I will never get tired of it! It’s a perfect, beautiful work of art
I always figured Victor wanting to die was because he just assumed that Victoria didn't love him and she was happy with Lord Barkis, who seems to be a "better" man. So Victor decided to commit to Emily instead.

Donkey is still beautiful. I cry a lot. I cried on my exes lap like a baby during How To Train Your Dragon 3. Ohh boy and don’t get me started on Forrest Gump
Relatable, I cried on the cinema when they cut Rapunzel's hair in Tangled.
Corpse bride is the first thing that taught me what loving someone selflessly was. The first time I'd ever seen unconditional love displayed
Yes and it's so beautiful 😭😭😭
YES ME TOO
That's beautiful
I think it's lovely. Not alot of films have love like that.
Everyone is possessive and jealous and cray or there are no problems but external ones that the lovers have to overcome.
Yeah this is refreshing.
well that answered the question in the title so quickly for me 😭
I will, to this day, break down into tears when the little kid says “Grampa?” and hugs his passed grandfather.
That scene hits me hard too
My grandpa just died a few months ago so me too.
The fact the he recognized him in his skeletal form amazes me because my grandfather passed away when I was so little and I recall so little about him. Then there is another grandfather whom I refuse to associate myself with....

Emily is such a perfect example for want vs. need in characterization.
explain
@@Internatube Characters typically have wants (their main goal in the story) as well as a need (which is usually the conclusion to their character arc or growth). In some cases, the want and need are complimentary, but it's usually more compelling when they're not.
In this case, Emily's want was to fulfill her bridal dreams that were denied to her. She THOUGHT that her need was to marry Victor, when really, her need was justice and peace. She also needed to let go of Victor in order to move on. So, she had to give up her want to get her need, which is why her ending is so bittersweet.
I cry every time, when I was a kid I'd be so mad Emily didn't get Victor, but now I understand the beauty of her letting him go.
I’m 24 and still lowkey wish he went with her, they were so nice together 😭
I watched this recently and I had the same thoughts when I was a kid
@@packnetadaija it's a very bitter sweet ending, ngl
“Til death do us part” they are not meant to be together until the afterlife. Just a perfect example of right person wrong time
@@cyberpunkgrandpa that’s a beautiful observation of the movie
I feel like it’s really subtle, but how I interpreted Victor’s decision to die like this:
It’s been implied throughout the movie that Victor is quiet and has low-self esteem (he can barely practice wedding vows for a person he just met, he’d rather draw or play piano then socialize, and he doesn’t have the same objections that Victoria has about the marriage.) He just goes along with what his parents want.
Especially since from the start Victor has contiously yearned to go back to Victoria
such a simple yet beautiful thing
Good comment is good
That’s exactly how I saw it too.

The thing I love most about this movie is that with every dead person, you can see how they died just by looking at them
Yeah, some of th went through pretty HORRIFIC deaths 😬😬😬
I wish more movies did that. Beetlejuice is one of the only other's i could think of. I want a story that does it seriously like Burton does it comically i want someone shot in the head to look like it for instant and for the story to show it as bleak as it would be. American werewolf in london is one of the few other's that comes to mind
It's been theorized that Victor from Frankenweenie is actually a descendant of Corpse Bride Victor and when you look into it does make a lot of sense. The Fangirl did a great video on this theory
That makes so much sense
I circled the globe seven times, climbed every mountain, swam into every sea, looked under every rock, and never found the one who asked.
Yes I've said this too. It make complete sense.
It’s also been theorized that jack skeleton is a dead version of victor
Hell now that I think about it the kids Dad looked a lot like the main dude from Corpse Bride
Also, her "death" is commonly theorized to be her passing from purgatory to her afterlife. Unless that's official.
The beginning tears me up but the last line got a good chuckle because it's too true 😂
(Insert lego character death sound effect)

Silly weddings are like the best weddings ever
ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT'SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS TTTTIIIIIIMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEE
“We all end up in the remains of the day!”
Poor Emily, she didn't deserve what happened to her
Barkis a b*tch and I hope they filleted him like a fish at the end
I honestly just always assumed Victor changed his mind so quickly because he heard at that point that Victoria was getting married to someone else, he assumed he wasn't an option anymore. So, I assumed he just felt quite bad for Emily and after their moment he thought it would be worth it to make Emily happy and with their moment at the piano (the same way he had his first moment with Victoria who I also assume was his first real interaction with a woman) he could probably be happy with her. Kind of like he was going to be the selfless one, but then they turned it on us. I assume that song could help explain it better tho as you said.
Same
I think the reason why Victor didn't decide to stop Victoria's weddings is a combination of a few things: everyone thinks he ran off with another woman, he messed up the vows and nobody thinks he's serious, his self esteem issues, and Victoria's parents would not let him near Victoria if he did come back.
yeah exactly all of that, im pretty sure its expressed quite well in the movie too all of that.
im a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope(as long as is not toxic of course)anya and dimitri, annika and aiden
But Victor and Victorias love story is so unique it’s like all the love tropes combined into one, and I love it.
I think they meant Victor and Emily, as he saw Emily as an “enemy” at first because she scared him
I don't know how I feel about that first example being kids🤔 you do mean from spy family right?
why are u shipping kids what
@@Ari-rm9xw So kids can't fall in love with other kids then? I'm sorry Ms. Woke liberal SJW cancel culture, your dumb glasses fell off.
I didn't know kids weren't capable of feeling love or having a crush of their age, it's almost like if they aren't human, wow.
1 thing: Victoria’s family is from “old money”
But I think the dad said like bad investments or something made them destitute and so they are marrying off Victoria to victors family because they are “new money”
I'm so happy you're doing a video on this absolute masterpiece Corpse Bride is by far my favorite movie
(By the way - Mayhew the coach rider didn't 'just die out of nowhere', he seemingly dies from pneumonia or a violent coughing fit from the weather)
Victor's parents are "new money". Victoria's parents are broke but have prestige.
Whereas Corpse Bride is almost like a French animated film: acknowledges that not everything worked out but at least certain things have improved.
thanks for letting me know about french animated films....... ahah
I think I get what you mean, we, the audience, fall for Emily 💙💙🦋🦋
But Victor is in love with Victoria.
That was such an amazing introduction, a true corpse bride still gives me that weird sense of dread feeling anytime I hear the name Carl Tanzler
It just fits
Maybe Victor in Corpse Bride could be a Sebastian or Christopher, but it wouldnt be the same, especially with Victor - Victoria thing
I absolutely love this film, but it’s one of those movies that takes a lot out of you. It’s genuinely sad, but also beautiful
Ahhhh! Corpse Bride! I'm excited to see if my comment got picked!
This movie is also loved because the goth style was huge in the 2000s, and most gravitated toward any Tim Burton movie
I had a huge crush on the Corpse Bride as a kid, but that’s not saying much considering that I had a crush on the chick from Arthur and the Invisibles

Corpse Bride is my absolute all time favorite movie
I’m wondering as well if the butterfly at the beginning🦋 was in a way a messenger to Emily for her to know stuff
I appreciate you telling the story of Carl, or more importantly Elaina. I have only heard Ask A Mortician tell this story, and it is a really interesting one.

I'm glad you finally got to watch this!
Sure, maybe like Emily, I will also be begging for love, I’ll keep hoping for it, only to end up as “the other woman.”
Victoria is a sweet girl, impossible to hate, and Victor has every right to love who he truly wants.
I dont know how my mom did it lmao.
but the skeleton song goes hard in corpse bride
I loved this movie when it first came out. I've always loved stop motion as well. I'd watch the special features multiple times, it was so cool to see how they animated everyone.
It may not be recognized a lot but this movie always holds a special place in my heart
Corpse bride my beloved. This movie helped me accept myself and learn to find beauty in the macabre. Edit: forgot to mention I’m now goth and queer and Emily is one of my favorite characters of all time moral of the story this movie turns ur kids gay and Alt 😎😎😎
That’s what I was trying to say in my comment! Beauty in the macabre

@@KingOfGaymes king this is the internet. It’s a bunch of alt queer kids huddled around their favorite white guy of the week
When emily turned to butterflies i never understood it when i was younger. But now i always see it as a spirit finally being set free and finally going to the afterlife and not being stuck in limbo since she got justice for her death.
I love how PIG's idea of Establishe Titles came from "dumb gimmick" to "I'm a fucking noble now"
I was going to comment this if no one else did. Lol.
21:30 YOU ARE GOING TO OHIO
The edits are incredible
17:50 I can't help but remember the hangover movies when I hear that
I am such a diehard Danny Elfman fan he is truly the best part of every project he’s ever been involved in
I love Danny so much, you can always tell when the music is his. He just has this super unique sound.
I’ve waited so long for this video! This movie is such a masterpiece, I always admired this movie for how contrasted and visually pleasing the movie was with amazing music! I’ve watched this ever since I was 4 and honestly- I will never get tired of it! It’s a perfect, beautiful work of art
Nooo don’t bring up the guy who kept a corpse in his room for years 😭 it’s not the same
I always figured Victor wanting to die was because he just assumed that Victoria didn't love him and she was happy with Lord Barkis, who seems to be a "better" man. So Victor decided to commit to Emily instead.
I thought the timestamp for when this was posted said 4 months ago, but it said 4 minutes? yay! finally early for once
