    In the omaha sector, the Americans suffered more than 90% losses for the first two waves, lost all amphibious tanks and had to attack German positions almost intact due to a bombing error and because the Landing craft shifted from the initial zone because of the bad weather. (sorry for my english, i'm coming from belgium and i'm not use to write things in english ) :)

      When you said you were bad at it you made a small mistake hardly noticeable.

"Within 15 minutes of landing at Dog Green on the western end of the beach, A/116 had been cut to pieces, the leaders among the 120 or so casualties, the survivors reduced to seeking cover at the water's edge or behind obstacles."

Respect for all who lost their lives, allied and axis.

    Just a note for perspective. `A` company of the 116th infantry were the first wave on `Dog Green` almost opposite the Vierville exit. They were ferried by sailors from the Royal Navy on LCVP`s, on of which was Jimmy Green, he stated the infantry disembarked in good order and started to advance up the beach. Only after the LCVP`s had reversed off the beach did the Germans commence engaging the Americans.

      Indeed, A coy (minus two boats which were hit and sank on the run in) landed exactly as planned directly opposite the Vierville draw which the Germans had heavily fortified - there're a few clips of a very moving interview with Jimmy ruclips.net/video/zTukU-VBGMI/видео.html at 11:25 and 17:17 in which he describes the scene and goes on to tell us that every man from his boat (a British LCA) died on the beach.

    Something weird to think about: would you still play a game like, battlefield, or men of war, if you knew that every unit could feel it's own artificial pain, and every scripted mission was a legit fight for the units inside the game, just something wired to think about.

    The film maker comments on the length of time between the 1st and 2nd waves saying that he's sure it wouldn't have been so long - in fact, it was approximately 30 minutes before the 2nd wave arrived and another 20 minutes or so before the 3rd wave. Interspersed with the infantry assault craft there were numerous tank landing craft/ships and many instances of craft being completely off-station and/or arriving late to the beach due to various factors, so it must have been pretty chaotic as they tried to weave their way in through the obstacles, many of which were already submerged as the tide had come in higher and faster than expected due to the poor weather.

  • @PossibleDoot
    @PossibleDoot 7 лет назад +62

    Not really historically accurate. Dog Green had no "pillbox" like bunkers. The only thing they had were type 667 casemate bunkers for one large pak gun aimed down the beach, and a 667 casemate with a smaller caliber pak aimed at the other end of the beach towards Point Du Hoc. The defenses were mostly made of trenchlines on the bluff, and some storage bunkers. In addition you would find concrete tobruks behind the trenchlines. There also were no buildings at the Vierville Draw. The Germans had completely demolished them. There also were no concrete break walls - they were made of wood.

    Excellent video and great catch on your part.
    Just like then the 116th, 115th and 175th of the 29th Division are all National Guard units spread across Maryland, Virginia and currently some of the battalions fall under the Pennsylvania National Guard's 28th Division.
    The 115th, 116th and the 175th all deployed overseas to fight in the war on terror.
    They originate from the famous 5th Regiment which exists today and took part in the Revolutionary War. The unit made multiple bayonet charges to save Washington's army at the battle of Brandy Wine.
    Again, great video. Glad you did your research.

    @DiplexHeated the MG-34 and the MG-42 fought along side each other throughout the war. While the MG-42 was preferred as it had better performance and was cheaper, the MG-34 was still in production because it was used heavily in tanks, probably because the MG-42's rate of fire was too high to mount on a slow turret and convenience for building to install another on the hulls. Both guns did their jobs well in the war and was able to be loved throughout.

    from what I heard they waited for a waning high tide so they could use the boats to get closer but the fog had delayed things and the tide was a lot lower than they wanted. The seas were pretty rough too. This is from interviewing my grandfather who was a Ranger at D-Day and was wounded. My other Grandfather was a German at D-Day, he told me that the troops were like Ants and they kept running out of Ammo and Barrels for their MG's. He said the Americans were killed by British ships quite a bit. He said they also tried to set up a mortar in a troop carrier and it ended up capsizing after getting hit very badly.

  • @Scott.Farkus
    @Scott.Farkus 5 лет назад +2

    Most of the infantry in the 1st wave on D-Day never made it to the beach, they were machine gunned as soon as the ramps went down. The few that made it onto the beach were the ones who jumped over the side of the boats, many of which drowned when their heavy gear dragged them to bottom.
    Those who made to the beach were faced with mines, wire obstacles, 88mm artillery, mortars, machine gun fire, snipers, and anything else the Germans had to throw at them. Estimates show that as many as 5000 U.S. soldiers may have been killed in the first 3 hours.
    This scenario makes it look like a walk in the park.

    • @jiraiya8988
      @jiraiya8988 5 лет назад +2

      And what’s sad is that the people at the front of the boats were the most inexperienced and were essentially put there to be bullet Sponges for the more experienced soldiers. All of them being from 18-20ish, they were able to choose they’re last meals, even though that’s not what they thought was going on. Essentially, before the take off, they were given a speech about how they are about to become American hero’s and they were able to choose whatever meal they wanted and they got all excited, but little did they know that they were the sacrifice that had to be made to ultimately secure a victory. They are in deed true American heroes.

    To make a point. Omaha Beach, was one of the more heavily defended sections of the coastline. Aside from that, a lot of the plans the Allies had during the landings, didn't occur. For instance, there was supposed to be a series of highly concentrated bombing missions to essentially neutralize the defenses. But, the bomber crews were worried that their bombs might hit the U.S. troops on the beach...so, they held off their bomb drops, so as a result their bombs fell miles inland...which as a result, left the defenses on the beaches untouched.

    They went in full force every wave. They HAD to get a victory here and they knew it wasn't going to be pretty. Expecting a high amount of casualties(which there were) they sent big waves and many of them at that. People were literally mowed down coming down on a completely exposed beach(except for tank traps that were big enough to kinda' shield you and craters made from arty, dead bodies), weighed with equipment, trying to swim while there were germans tucked on a high ground with a shitton of mgs and arty just going wild.

    Actually, during the D-day beach invasion there was no low tide or pools of water or dunes sprouting out of the beach. It was not a low tide but low enough to disembark and drive tanks in water towards the beach and so were the soldiers, jumping out of watercraft and rush towards the beach head. This scene looks nowhere like Omaha beach. Most of the shore had dunes, other parts had high cliffs that soldiers had to climb to get to the top.

    The first wave was completely decimated, "On this two-division front landing, only six rifle companies were relatively effective as units. They did better than others mainly because they had the luck to touch down on a less deadly section of the beach. Three times that number were shattered or foundered before they could start to fight. " Great Article to read if you ever get a chance, www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1960/11/first-wave-at-omaha-beach/303365/ even better read "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose that book is as good and as detailed as it gets!

    the beaches were actually divided up into: Utah for the 4th US infantry division, Omaha for the 1st and 29th infantry divisions, Gold for the 50th British infantry division, Juno for the 3rd Canadian infantry division and Sword for the 3rd British infantry division. All of these small operations combine into Operation Overlord. I hope this helps.

    Its a fun scenario. One cant help but notice the designer seems to have intentionally left a way to land unmolested. The Success at Omaha was due to overwhelming number of drops that defeated the Germans mechanically, machines could not keep up. For more fun though we allow the scenario were troops dont get slaughtered in the Higgins boats.

      I know right, every game has them for some reason while they're not realistic. However, they're bunkers and for something like this it doesn't really matter what the bunker looks like. That's why it was used in this map.

    "WN" together with the number are the designations for "Widerstandsnest" = resistance point (roughly translated).
    those desgnations were used by the Germans to indicate the different strong points in the line of defence.
    please also refer to:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Fortress
    this one was designated "WN17" by the defenders.

    Realistic apart from one major detail. Ordinary soldiers hit by MG fire from pillboxes would not just keel over, they would be lying in the sand clutching thier leg screaming above the sound of the artilley 'DOCTOR'... 'MY LEG'... 'DOCTOR'... 'DOCTOR'.... Thats the problem with games and films. Ordinary men on either side just collapse if they smell a bullet. Many have said that during the D-Day landings enemy fire was inaudible over the mass of men screaming for a doctor, their mothers, or just random pain.

    • @gangstalker69
      @gangstalker69 7 лет назад +7

      Debbiebabe69 if you've ever been around firearms you'd know no amount of yelling from any amount of people can drown the sound of thousands of rifles, MGs, and artillery going off. The rest of your comment was nonsense too but the yelling over gunfire thing was the silliest

    • @nickpalframan4139
      @nickpalframan4139 7 лет назад +2

      You might want to believe that if ever you were shot it would be a quick death, but us humans are actually much stronger than that. Unless you're hit in the head, or in the heart with a k-bullet, you won't die instantly and that's all this Debbie lady was trying to express. I personally, found it more chaotic to picture myself on D-day given her depicted scenario and gave me even more respect for those who died that day. Not sure what was so nonsensical about that. Only nonsense was to shit on her with your know-everything attitude there, Mr "big money"

      Good point, when a soldier is shot in the arm or head or something, they should scream "DOCTOR"... "MY LEG"... "DOCTOR"... "DOCTOR" Even if they're set on fire, blown up, drowning, but I think that if they are shot in the leg they should scream: "DOCTOR"... "MY ARM"... "DOCTOR"... "DOCTOR"

      kbudrow1- thank Jesus, finally one decent comment. I wholeheartedly agree that the two part audiobooks (each about 6 hours) paints the most incredible picture of the events of June 6, both on the beaches, but inland as well. While it is told exclusively by German soldiers who survived - mostly captured, it also gives interesting descriptions and distinctions as between the allied forces - British, Canadian and American, and some description of how the German captives were treated in the various POW camps. The horrors described by these defeated soldiers who survived, and what many of them went through just in that single day are unbelievable and hard to forget. Particularly being cornered in a bunker and being flushed out with flamethrowers. The soldiers were extremely candid describing their views on the war over time. One machine gunner firing an MG42 from a Tobruk on Omaha actually expressed shock, and some pity, for the infantry waves being mowed down, and could not believe American officers would continue to send wave upon wave of infantry troops to face near certain death. The only things that eventually stopped the carnage at Omaha were: the naval bombardment resuming, additional tanks finally getting ashore, other allied troops beginning to attack from behind after breaking through at other sectors, and finally - the Germans running out of ammo. I can’t recommend this highly enough - and I have read Ambrose, Beevor, etc.
