Three things here: 1) the engineers knew that the glass on the vehicle would break, which is why they did the drop test to allow the glass more surface area and wiggle room to absorb the impact; 2) the engineers had no idea Musk would then ask them to throw the ball at the vehicle glass; and 3) Musk took zero part in the testing, design, or assembly, otherwise he would have known about 1) and 2).

Because what I heard straight from elon in an interview is that the believe the sledgehammer hitting the door caused the base of the window to shatter, and compromised the strength of the window. The first Starlink mission consisted entirely of test satellites. That will have given them a lot of useful test data (60 satellites worth).
You also cannot think of Starlink in the same way as traditional satellites - failure is an option here. The glass pane in test videos is laying out. The pressure causes it to flex and move slightly, and it doesn't shatter or break. But when installed in the window it is held in place, basically causing the force to be limited in it's ability to radiate out from an impact.

Can everyone really not tell that this was a marketing ploy to get people talking about the vehicle? It worked; Elon's genius remains.

They should took into consideration that when letting a metal ball fall onto a non fixed glass surface that the glass will bend and absorb the falling force. You can clearly see that the mounts tilt up after the drop due to the oscillation. Of course it wouldn't break at all comparing to the window of the 'cybertruck' with 5 corners, smaller surface and fixed from every side. Shame on those engineers

I was in Iraq September 2005 in an uparmored Humvee with bulletproof glass windows. When we got hit by a roadside bomb, the glass did break but did its job. It kept me from getting decapitated. As the entire window was shattered, that’s what counts.

Musk actually said that since the guy hit the door with the crowbar first, a small cornerpiece broke (the part of the glass hidden in the door), and then the whole window is screwed. He should have thrown the ball first, and THEN used the crowbar on the door.
