I agree, went with the Howa because of twist rate on the 223. Thought I wanted a 700...until I saw the 1:12 twist. How's using 1:9. Years later , I now have 3 howa rifles. Once again Japan showing us how to engineer and manufacture. Howa , Toyota , sushi....I love Japan
Great points and a really nice video. Just bought my first bolt action rifle and i bought the Howa 1500 in 308cal. Fun fact: In Sweden the Howa costs $1071 and the Weatherby Vanguard is $697! A gun salesman told me that if he was to choose between a used Howa and a new Vanguard he would take the Howa. We also spoke about the 700 and his opinion was that only reason to choose the 700 instead of the Howa 1500 was the huge amount of aftermarket parts.
Howa is a good rifle,,,, but it was compared to the 700 that Remington is making today, Remington 's quality is no longer at the level it was 50 years ago ,,the older 700 bdl's are some of the best rifles ever made by anyone,
Couldn't agree with you more mate. Each time I check out a new one it feels better than the last. Onward and Upward they shall go. Very well presented my friend. Take care. Skorp - Western Australia.

Good recommendation and video, If I remember my firearm history Howa made actions for other manufactures for decades. Weatherby, Sako and others. While looking similar to the Remington 700 action it is not, and I believe the action and bolt design is Sako. On the subject of the Remington 700, I purchased one about 5 years ago, the rifle is very good, but the trigger was horrible, but it's adjustable so I bought the rifle. When I tried "adjusting" the rigger, the adjustment screw made very little change in the weight, and the miles of creep remained. Mr Timney came to the rescue and I still use it and it's ok. Would I buy another, hell no. Not long after that I bought I Weatherby Vanguard aka Howa 1500, well talk about chalk and cheese, cloverleaf groups right out of the box and a trigger that was adjustable, and is crisp as they come. Not long after that Weatherby had a sale, and another one followed me home, dammed if I know where that came from. But I agree with all you say, there are lots of very good rifles out there, I love the Browning A-Bolt 2 and the Ruger American rifles, but the Howa/Vanguard actions are very good and would not hesitate to buy another.
My 1973 Model 700 in 30-06 is of excellent stock. Very well made and excellent fit and finished. I love it. Yet to load for it but she shoots the Federal Blue Box 180 grain stuff at about 1.5" at 100 yards. Like a previous post, I am very excited about the new to me Howa.

I have 2 Rems and 2 Rem made Marlins and they are great, all recent manufactures so perhaps I was lucky or maybe Remington have got their act together. I thought about getting a 6mm CR but my Howa 243 does fine and I really don't see the point since they are so similar.
Most guys look at me look they don't know what a Howa 1500 is when talking bolt action rifles, but they all recognize Weatherby Vanguard. I own three 1500 models, 7mm Rem Mag, .270 Winchester and 6mm Creedmoor. I always purchase the entry level models with pillar bedded Hogue stocks. They do not disappoint, excellent HACT triggers and are very accurate shooters.

You should try dropping a long action Howa into a Sako L61R/AIII stock sometime. They are pretty much a drop in. The Howa is copied heavily from the Sako L61R owing to the fact that Howa was contracted by Sako to build parts for them back in the 60's and they copied the Sako and built the Dickson/Howa Golden Bear. Sako sued and Howa changed it a bit to become the Howa 1500. Weatherby started getting Howa to build the Vanguard about 1970.

I have a S&W 1500 and two Weatherby Vanguards (270 Winchester, 257 Weatherby Magnum and 270 Win Short Mag.). All of the Howa triggers I've seen have sucked to the nth degree. On the three I have I've replaced them with Timney triggers. Remington 700 triggers are vastly superior to stock Howa triggers. Aside from that I've had good results with the three Howa's I've owned and shot extensively. If I were to give advice to a new shooter It would be to buy a Ruger American and live happily ever after.
Ruger makes decent guns. I don't care for the stock on the Ruger American. I like the Howa 2 stage trigger and it's very easy to modify to lighter weight. The x mark pro trigger was impossible to modify and the adjustment didn't work in my experience. The Ruger American is a good shooting gun and very affordable.
@BILL G I think the confusion is I'm referring to the original trigger that Mike Walker designed and could be easily adjusted to 2 and 3/4ths pounds. They were excellent. I haven't bought Remington 700 made after 2000 or so when I shifted to Howa then Ruger rifles.
A Howa barreled action has a nice trigger, it's smooth accurate and uses high quality steel with different calibers, profiles and lengths plus it uses a CHF barrel it's made in the same plant that makes Japanese millitary assult rifles it's used by the armed Japanese Police, the JSDF and other small police and millitary around the world use it as it's a solid rifle that's sold in most nations, just a decent bedded stock a decent optic and if you want a 10 round mag kit that is not expensive and mags are cheap and good. Howa used to make Arisakas also. Very good quality steel. 3 action sizes but I wish they had 6.5 swede and 7mm Mauser. They have 7.62x39 on the mini action. 6.5 creedmore on the mid. But they do lack .388L on the large action. But have a weaker .338 .308 (they use EU spec so it's technically a 7.62x51 NATO chamber same with the 5.56 Also have threaded barrels now and short action calibers like .300 blackout
when buying trigger upgrades for the HOWA 1500 (in 300 PRC Long action)... what trigger compatibility would be selected though, the Remington 700, Tikka ? G
Howa beat Remington at their own game. That game is providing accurate and quality made rifles at a reasonable cost. Honestly, everyone that’s familiar with Freedom Group’s track record knew that it was the beginning of the end when they got involved with Remington and Marlin. Everything that FG has ever touched has turned brown and stinks. I feel sorry for the Remington employees that have given a lifetime to building guns for an American company just to see it destroyed. I get no pleasure out of seeing American companies fail especially firearms manufacturers. It would be quite the dangerous thing for America to have to depend on foreign companies to supply their weapons. I own two Howas and both have had zero issues and shoot well considering their prices.Id much prefer they be an American owned and produced gun but Remington is a crapshoot, Winchester is foreign and priced at almost double the price, and the Ruger American, though it shoots well, looks and feels like garbage. I like the Hawkeye but it’s priced over a grand too. There’s just nothing in Howa’s price range that has forged steel receivers, good triggers, and quality barrels anymore. CZ used to be but their popularity has driven their prices way up from ten years ago. Still great guns but just not the good value that they used to be. I just don’t care for Savage rifles. It’s more of a styling issue than anything else.
Couldn't agree more. Be great if it was usa made. Ruger makes a great budget rifle even though I pick on them. Like you said though rough cheap Machining and cheap stocks. I like tikka but its not as well built a reciever I think which sparks a lot of debate.
Nailed it. I like the CZ. I am sure that Howa are good, but I like the CZ better. That Z manufacturer as well. I bought a brand new Interarms 30-06 years ago, about 1979 or 80. What a well made weapon. It was reasonably priced as well. I gave it to a relative and it still shoots well. I think it was either made by CZ or that other Slavic gun maker that starts with a Z.
I had one 700 and that one will be the last, got a 1500 and i would have another, pity our importer in the UK is very slow for the howa. The only gripe with the Howa is rebarreling they wont supply barrels for the 1500 action and gunsmiths dont like doing the metric threads on them
Just about every entry level action is better than Remington since Freedom Group took over... Bergara still makes an awesome action with a rem700 footprint for those of you who still love the design
@@flighttherapybullisticfpv133 I got a video on it. Bergara hmr scheels edition. I actually met a guy with same problem I had. Then I saw a couple reviews on the scheels edition with problems. Probably not very common
Yea, if you want a good Remington, you need an older one before Freedom Group took over; I've got an old 700 ADL in .308 from 1982 that has been more than I ever needed but that's when they still built quality rifles.
I’m a Remington fan well till recently when I purchased a 783 in 223 I was expecting an average group size of 1” I’ve tried 7types of amo and can not get a group less than 11/2” what a disappointment
I don’t own any Howa rifles so can’t comment on them. I’ve always been a fan of big Green and will hope this new company isn’t owned by Mitt ! We know what he’s do with American Jobs and their companies!
In this era of time / there seems to be a lack of quality control within several rifle company's ! There seems to be a lot of lemons getting by somehow ! Like not ejecting shell ? Severe rust > bolt an barrel !!! Poor finish ? How they get out the door like this is pitiful ! But look around / it seems to be everywhere ! Inspect rifle at dealers good , before paying an taking it home ! Good day....
I have 1 remington 700 sendero 300win.....at $1000.00 I had to spend another $500 plus on it in order to get it shoot...new trigger, barrel work, bed action. i'll never buy another remington when I can buy more accurate stock rifles for half the price. Is the remington 700 action design awesome, yes. But the company, nah.
Now let's not pick on old people (or old gun designs). ;o) Yeah, I have a Miroku built Browning X-Bolt Pro that is FAR better than any Remington. And I have a Remington 700/HS Precision target rifle. It took HS Precision to make it closer to what it should have been but STILL with a Remington's poor extractor and trigger.
I have a Howa 1500 and the one thing that I don't like about it is the long throat that Howa uses. A .100"+ bullet jump to the rifling is not conducive to good accuracy and I've tried too many different bullets and powders trying to find that good load but I've never been able to get more than about 1 MOA accuracy out of it. A lot of people would call that great but when I can get 1/4 MOA accuracy out of my Savages, I'm not satisfied with the Howa.
@@Bullets4Bucks I do have to say that my Howa is the prettiest rifle I own. I put it in a Boyd's thumbhole laminate stock, bedded the action, and that improved the accuracy from the factory stock, but I still have trouble getting that consistent sub MOA accuracy. I'd like to rebarrel it but I was looking at the price for a replacement barrel and the cost is up there around $500 for just the barrel... then I'd need go/no go gauges, the tools and clamps, and assorted little odds and ends to do the job correctly. My son likes the rifle and he's happy with 1 MOA accuracy so he's probably gonna get it.
If I were to buy a 700 in the same price range I believe it would shoot right with that howa and I have been shooting these guns for 25 years u can bet the bank on that
I have to disagree. The model 700 is the benchmark for almost all precision rifles. There is a reason they are used by the military and millions of hunters throughout the U.S. But, everyone has their favorite for sure.
The only reason the military uses the 700 is because its cheap, I was an infantry Marine and everything the military buys is lowest bider even when its absolute garbage. And 700 foot print basically means the bottom metal screws are space the same distance and remingtons cheap bottom metal they flooded the market with will work with that action, Round receivers with no bearing surface, like remingtons and savages along with pinned recoil lugs do not egual accuracey or durability. I also never cared for remingtons shorter than everyone else magazine well and ejection port. And i would say over the last 100 years of bench shooting there may have been more military mauser, commercial mauser and model 70 pre 64 (basically a winchester commercial mauser) may have been the heart of more bench rifles than the 700
THE REMINGTONS USED BY MILITARY ARE TOTALLY REBUILT, TRUED, REBARRELED, TUNED TO HANDLOADED AMMO SPECIFIC TO THAT GUN. NOTHING LIKE A CUSTOM GUN AND AMMO TO SOLVE POOR QUALITY CONTROL AT THE FACTORY.
They're beautiful rifles but I'll never own one. I'm a lefty so that's that. I used to get pissed about people not catering to lefties. Not any more. I got frustrated with Galco Holsters years ago so now I only order from Kramer or Milt Sparks. I pay more and wait longer but it's a better holster and I get what I want in the color I want. As far as rifles go for me Remington is dead so now it's Browning: The Best There Is. Simple as that.
No a browning guy here though I do like some of their rifles. I think tikka makes lefties. If you like browning though and it works for you that is awesome.
Just buy a Bergara.. you get all the advantages of the 700 and a way better rifle from the get go. Get a HMR pro and it comes with a Trigger Tech diamond trigger.
The video has good lighting -- except in the shadow of the camera. And that is right in the middle, where the part he is talking about is usually located, so it is always in the shade. Really a shame.
My Howa is nice but just doesn't shoot as well as my Remingtons. My 700 groups half the size of the Howa. I can cover my Remington groups with a nickle. My 7 mag with a dime.
@@Bullets4Bucks I've ordered a new stock as starters to tune up my .308 Howa 1500 and go from there. The thumb hole laminated stock is pretty but bulky. I've only had one rifle that I couldn't get to shoot sub-moas and that was a Sako and replaced everything but the action on it. Traded it for a Rem.700 HB varmint 22-250 that would shoot one hole out of the box.
@@Bullets4Bucks You aren't looking into the camera. This is disconcerting to viewers. If you were doing an interview, then you don't look into the camera. But in this situation, you should be looking into the camera. Also, why are you bent over and not sitting up straight?
You must be Howa's RUclips Marketing manager because it is obvious you have a infactuation with them. I have one it is a good rifle for the price point ,but you might want to look at Blaser, Steyr Pro. And gun that I like better that is in the same price point as the Howa is the Bergara B-14 HMR do a comparison on that gun we all know Remington is almost done.
I had a Bergara hmr it had mature accuracy issues. I saved for it for over a year. It ended up being a huge disappointment. Granted it was probably a one off lemon. I am sure most are good. I can't find Blaser or Steyr at a low enough cost but I would love to review them. lol I don't work for Howa. I do love Howa though admittedly.
Completely different price range. As for the how to make a Howa action like a Tikka, clean it properly, oil it down, little dab of moly grease on the cocking ramp and work it for a while. They are equal to Tikka once you break them in.
They both can be very accurate. I prefer the build quality and consistency from gun to gun of Howa over Remington. Accuracy from rifle to rifle can change and it is so dependent on the load being used that it's hard to say. In my experience though Howas have shot slightly more accurate.
@@Bullets4Bucks This 5r has the same barrel as that of the M24 SWS used in the Army and is known to produced .35 MOA groups (according to the Major running the program). I find it difficult believe that the Howa is more accurate.
@@jn3750 ammunition, stock or chassis, trigger and so on all effect how accurate a person shoots a rifle. I've owned 4 howas 3 have produced .25 groups mulitply times with factory ammo. A couple many times. Howa has been around for a long time and has produced rifles for Sako and other manufacturers. Remington is not what it once was either. Sure they make some good models still, the 5r being one of them but lots of fish in the pond making good rifles.
Accurizing and blueprinting.. a 700 all day long! No tolerances measured in this video which makes accuracy. No barrel quality analyzed, out of box accuracy. I mean it is a cursory look and it is what it is. I own 3 Howa's and 2 Rem700's and while I do chassis/stocks/barrels/triggers, if I were (I am) building precision rifles I would do a Rem 700 as the accurizing you can do is enormous. Saying this... going custom is the preferred way but still I would get everything checked by a gunsmithing machinist as you should be getting perfect machining, but who knows until it is checked.

But have a weaker .338
.308 (they use EU spec so it's technically a 7.62x51 NATO chamber same with the 5.56
Also have threaded barrels now and short action calibers like .300 blackout
Don't forget that the bolt body on the Howa is a one piece forging where as the Remington has a brazed on bolt handle.
Very true
I have a Howa mini 7.62x39 and CZ 527 7.62x39, dont know why the howa just feels better, but CZ looks better with the walnut.
Interesting
when buying trigger upgrades for the HOWA 1500 (in 300 PRC Long action)... what trigger compatibility would be selected though, the Remington 700, Tikka ?
G
Weatherby Vanguard or Howa 1500
They are head and shoulders above the 700 in design and execution. And, I have owned and still own lots of 700's.
Agreed
Why lots of the same gun?
I love Howa and Weatherby rifles as well. I own 3
They are great rifles
That’s what happens when an entity’s sole existence is to squeeze as much profit out of an endeavor as they can. Hurray for wallstreet bullshittery
I had one 700 and that one will be the last, got a 1500 and i would have another, pity our importer in the UK is very slow for the howa. The only gripe with the Howa is rebarreling they wont supply barrels for the 1500 action and gunsmiths dont like doing the metric threads on them
That stinks, we have pretty good supply in the USA
Great video , greeting from mexico..
Howdy
Just about every entry level action is better than Remington since Freedom Group took over... Bergara still makes an awesome action with a rem700 footprint for those of you who still love the design
I had bad luck with my Bergara but I am sure that most are great
@@Bullets4Bucks really?? Thats literally the first ive heard of anyone having issue with Bergara.. which model was it if you dont mind me asking?
@@flighttherapybullisticfpv133 I got a video on it. Bergara hmr scheels edition. I actually met a guy with same problem I had. Then I saw a couple reviews on the scheels edition with problems. Probably not very common
I agree 100%
For bases outerimpact makes some great picatinny rails for them especially the mini action
Yes they do! I have used a few.
Howa is extremely underrated
Indeed
Yea, if you want a good Remington, you need an older one before Freedom Group took over; I've got an old 700 ADL in .308 from 1982 that has been more than I ever needed but that's when they still built quality rifles.
Yes
Great video! Looking at a carbon fiber that’s 7.8 pounds in Kratos color
Nice have you seen the howa elevate
Just now. Beautiful gun. Wonder what price on that is? The kratos version I’m looking at is $1300
I think close to 1500 is all
@@Bullets4Bucks might be worth looking at. Do you think carbon fiber has longevity?
@@rpk5250 the barrel or stock?
I so not like the magazine release om the howa mini.
I would like a bottom metal for hunting.
Are they stamped “ made in Japan” ?
Yes
Bullets4Bucks Cool. I’m going to pick me up one in 270 to hunt Red deer with.
Is it better than a savage 110?
My opinion is yes but you find ppl will disagree. Both will shoot accurate
I’m a Remington fan well till recently when I purchased a 783 in 223 I was expecting an average group size of 1” I’ve tried 7types of amo and can not get a group less than 11/2” what a disappointment
Yeah they went down hill
Nice video mate... one thing I had heard was that the bolts on the Howa are forged from one piece making them very strong?
Is this true?
It is one piece but I don't know that it's forged.
Yes they are forged.
When they say Made in America it has to be excellent quality lol 😆
Howa 1500 ftw!!!
I don’t own any Howa rifles so can’t comment on them. I’ve always been a fan of big Green and will hope this new company isn’t owned by Mitt ! We know what he’s do with American Jobs and their companies!
What about savage actions ?
Glad you asked. I am actually going to be doing some savage videos here in a few weeks :)
@@Bullets4Bucks Awesome looking at getting into prs from milsurps the variety is great
Cool
Made in Japan...can't beat the quality.
Agreed
Is this a stainless steel barrel with cerakote finish?
No
Also the Howa actions are flat on the bottom, like a Winchester model 70 therefore making the action less likely to move in the stock when fired.
They are the best in class 👏
What specific model is that??
Howa hugue kuiu and remington 700
just picked up a 1500 in 223, amped to try her out
Nice hopefully it shoots good
I have 1 remington 700 sendero 300win.....at $1000.00 I had to spend another $500 plus on it in order to get it shoot...new trigger, barrel work, bed action. i'll never buy another remington when I can buy more accurate stock rifles for half the price. Is the remington 700 action design awesome, yes. But the company, nah.
Completely agree. They are usually not worth it anymore.
Now let's not pick on old people (or old gun designs). ;o)
Yeah, I have a Miroku built Browning X-Bolt Pro that is FAR better than any Remington. And I have a Remington 700/HS Precision target rifle. It took HS Precision to make it closer to what it should have been but STILL with a Remington's poor extractor and trigger.
Interesting
I liked my 270 in howa but hate my 308 howa ultra light
Interesting
I have a Howa 1500 and the one thing that I don't like about it is the long throat that Howa uses. A .100"+ bullet jump to the rifling is not conducive to good accuracy and I've tried too many different bullets and powders trying to find that good load but I've never been able to get more than about 1 MOA accuracy out of it. A lot of people would call that great but when I can get 1/4 MOA accuracy out of my Savages, I'm not satisfied with the Howa.
Strange i get sub moa out of all i have ever owned easily.
Weather by buys these but has them marked as the vanguard with some propiatary calibers.
I have a Remington 770 in 300 win mag that holds .5 to .75 groups consistently. Your statement is invalid.
I had a 770 it shot good for awhile until. The action basically fell apart and was crappy.

@let us prey you don't know anything about me d bag. I'm not a millennial and far from lazy.
@let us prey both these rifled were created before millennials took over lol
The action looks to be a stiffer more rigid that a Remington 700. Supposed to help accuracy.
Its definitely a better receiver design
1500 with the factory hogue stock
The hogue is ok stock isn't the best but usable
Can anyone recommend DBM for Howa?
There are conversion kits online. The plastic ones aren't very good they tend to crack along the action screw area
If I were to buy a 700 in the same price range I believe it would shoot right with that howa and I have been shooting these guns for 25 years u can bet the bank on that
Howa barrels and action are all stainless I believe?
No
If you are comparing how's 1500 to Rem 700 is better you lost your mind.
Lol
@Infectious Legume Exactly. The government's use or adoption of something is often reason to buy something else.
Yeah. I been working on improving the lighting but it's a very small basement room. Will have to try something new.
@@Bullets4Bucks You got your points across, Thats the main thing mate. Keep up the great work.
@@Top-Jimmy thank you
Howa 1500 rifles are a direct copy of weatherby vanguard rifles. I have 1 of each and there identical
Howa makes the vanguard for Weatherby. I would say the Vanguard is a copy of the 1500. Howa make Sako in the 60s and even made the Mark V briefly
@@Bullets4Bucks thats a interesting fact! i didn't know that.
My Howa is nice but just doesn't shoot as well as my Remingtons. My 700 groups half the size of the Howa. I can cover my Remington groups with a nickle. My 7 mag with a dime.
That is great shooting.
It will with the right round and some bedding
Was any of this sanctioned?
Lol.
Remingtons used to be really nice rifles… they are selling junk off of their old reputation.
Whats he looking at ?
Idk what am I looking at? lol
@@Bullets4Bucks Do you know how to make the action on the Howa as sweet as the Tikka?
"you might want to look at Blaser, Steyr Pro."
I think most people would rather see reviews of rifles they can actually afford.
Completely different price range.
As for the how to make a Howa action like a Tikka, clean it properly, oil it down, little dab of moly grease on the cocking ramp and work it for a while. They are equal to Tikka once you break them in.
Remington fell to pieces unfortunately
Yup unfortunately 😕
Which is more accurate, R700 5R or Howa 1500?
They both can be very accurate. I prefer the build quality and consistency from gun to gun of Howa over Remington. Accuracy from rifle to rifle can change and it is so dependent on the load being used that it's hard to say. In my experience though Howas have shot slightly more accurate.
@@Bullets4Bucks Have you ever shot the 5R version?
@@jn3750 yes but didn't own it.
Most rifles are better than a Remington. Remington quality went down the drain before 2000.
I wonder if they will ever improve and have a come back
Bullets4Bucks They have a new CEO that has promised to bring the quality back. We will see.

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!
