It was so much fun being part of Kumu Mark's halau during the making of Lilo and Stitch. We got to see the first rushes with pencil drawings of our
wahine dancers. Our Kumu lit up making this. He told us to watch for special dedication to the Hawaiian Kingdom. Turned out that for the opening
credits he did a traditional chant paying homage to QueennLiliuokalani and then this dance/chant which was honoring King Kalakaua. The Hawaiians
were very happy. You may not get it, but Hawaiians did. As a former Disney fan, I loved the watercolor backgrounds for North Shore. Just beautiful.

What sucks is I feel like this research doesn’t go into Disney movies anymore. Like if you see the classics and how they’re done, it may be old fashioned but they were out in the field wherever they need to be to get the information they needed. They brought real people to be a part of the films and I think that’s so lost in technology now.

Hey I dunno if my memory serves me right but I remebered reading an article or watching a vid (i forgot it was long ago) about animators of Frozen traveling to a place and researching ice structures and ice crystals in nature and applied it on how Elsa's ice would reflect/refract light when subjected to lightsource. • @hawkhillfalconer3529

The song is the closest thing to the Hawaiian national anthem. It's a song praising their last queen Liliuokalani, calling her the rightful ruler of the islands, and praising her brother, calling him the flower that never fades in the sun. The american businessmen stormed the palace and arrested the queen, forcing her to abdicate by threatening to kill her people and citizens. Then they appointed themselves to govern the islands, giving themselves all the land and power. They did this because the Queen was allowing the natives to vote, and limiting the americans ability to buy land and import chinese workers. Every time you buy a Dole product, you are supporting the company who raped Hawaii.

There aren’t exact steps. You need to create your own based on the words of the song. Individual Halau (school of hula) will have different interpretation of the mele (song). In this movie, those movements belong to Kumu (teacher) Mark Ho’omalu. His studio is located in Oakland and the name of his halau The Academy of Hawaiian Arts.
