I wish you would have contacted the ACLU and the Human Rights Campaign and the local gay community for help in dealing with the homophobic B.S. in the mayor's office. The local media should have been contacted where they could put the mayor on the spot.
I agree with Ray Rothermel’s comment about contacted the ACLU and the Human Rights Campaign. The Detroit City government should have been held accountable and the homophobia exposed.
Thank you, James. I am a from Detroit and now live in the suburbs. No wonder the City of Detroit has so many challenges. I cannot understand the prejudice against anyone. And when it happens to a gay man, I am enraged. Keep up the fight.
As a lawyer who is and always has been a gay male, I was hired by one of the world's largest real estate development companies after I had successfully served in two federal judicial clerkships and a stint as an Enforcement Attorney with the US Securities & Exchange Commission after graduating from law school where I was on the dean's list. Because I made the egregious error of accepting an offer of employment with this particular company, a Dallas, Texas based cabal of heterosexual married "family" men who loved to entertain themselves and many of their male clientele at the most expensive of strip joints wherever they did business, I know so well the cowardice of homophobes who just can't admit their irrational prejudices and who resort to newspeak for their "just get your ass out the door, no questions answered" parting words that implement their ignorant self-reassuring feckless discrimination. Their phrase of choice with me was "there just doesn't seem to be the right fit" between me and the company. Personally despicable and astoundingly ignorant with unexamined hubris, many of these integrity lacking homophobes, whether in the private or public sectors, will waste so much of their time trying to "homogenize" (perhaps more apropos a word would be "heterogenize") their little fiefdoms in lieu of doing the truly necessary tasks that are in their overflowing in-boxes right beneath their self-destructively turned-up noses.
The fact is , most people in supervisory positions have been trained on how to discriminate legally ? Using the loophole of being able to discharge an employee without reason ? and in reality there always has to be a reason or the person wouldn't be let go to begin with ? so , to protect their ass , most have been trained to keep their mouth's shut and just use the phrases like " it's not working out " or " you don't seem to be a good fit " or " the position is'nt really suited for you " . or " you might be happier somewhere else " .
Wow. This poor, sweet guy. I'm glad he took it in stride and didn't let it undermine his sense of self. Just goes to show you the extent of the nasty homophobic bigotry that runs deep in black culture.
@Jason Eric There are multiple things that females do, and it's not just black women. Inside of the black community there are just people who are not comfortable with gay men due to most likely the fear of another thing you have to fight with society to get over. The struggle is hard, and in many ways we do it to ourselves.
@Jason Eric This is such a great statement and it should make people think. The very idea that there is the same outcome when it comes to people of different back grounds, ethnicity of the person, and social status is stated to be one goal. This so very far from the truth. This community is set up to make some feel inferior, and other may excell. There should be a goal of inclusion with in a community that can be the worst she it comes to the way we treat each other, due to clicks, the perceived idea of how one should look, the inability to learn about each other's culture. We miss the mark within the community so much it becomes a joke. I would love for him to push on and make it into a opportunity to teach all in this community of LGBT or what every you want to be. There knowledge that we can be better is so straight in the face it crazy, but so many fail even at the simple task of just being friendly.
Jason Eric, I am a black female and your statement is a vast generalization and so I very much disagree with you! I do not have a problem with gay ppl and I do not think they should hide in the closet on their jobs because straight ppl live their life in the open so why should they?
Wow. And I know how that must've made you feel. I had a job about 8 years ago where coworkers made similar comments, and with me being closeted and still feeling shame about myself, I didn't have the will to say something or report it, I just knew I had to find another job. Knowing that the work environment would be that way, I couldn't stay in that culture.
Ugh. It's not your shame. It's not yours. It's theirs. Leave their shame with them. Leave it. You are lovely. Yes, you own your identity. They're frightened and weak. You stay strong and proud.
While much of the media is boasting about the huge come back Detroit is looking at under the leadership of Mayor Duggan the fact of the matter is our state is growing increasingly more toward right wing philosophies with LGBT phobic measures coming out of the State capitol. And on that I cite legislation aimed at being able to deny service to anyone you feel your religion is against. While Mayor Duggan may be a Democrat the public discourse still rails against LGBT individuals. With underhanded discrimination like this going on behind his back not addressing it will only serve to bolster the homophobia that is here and now present in the Detroit Metro area. Standing up for yourself James was great but unless someone forces Mike Duggan's hand to act proactively in YOUR favor and proclaim his administration will NOT tolerate the discrimination you endured, we will continue to be maligned and seen as a detriment to the future of this city and metro area. SHAME ON HIM and yes do bring a law suit to establish that we are worthy of respect as well.
I think the fact that he questioned the appropriateness of certain things demonstrates his good judgment. We all have to figure out the right amount of ourselves to inject into a job regardless of sexual orientation.
What an awful thing you had to go through, but you seem to have processed it really well....and came out on the other side...even better! Good for you (and thank you). I'm sure that wherever you find yourself you'll be strong enough to take care of yourself...and represent us well, also.
Good for you young man. What you should do now is find a lawyer who will take your case pro-bono and sue the "S"it out of those idiots, for discrimination. You've got at least two platforms that can be use, which are obvious. You shouldn't want to win to get your job back, you need to win to put those bstrds in their place, and maybe get them fired. I wish you the best for your future. Good luck my friend !
As a black gay man, I can say from experience that there has always been division between the black and gay communities. I think a lot of this comes from the narrative that we have all been conditioned to believe, which is that there is a scarcity of resources that we all have to compete for. This is a lie! We live in the wealthiest nation on earth and there are more than enough resources for everything we all need. We just need to realize that the division is manufactured by powerful people who want to keep us distracted while they take it all. If we had enough sense to come together and fight together, there is no limit to what we could achieve for ourselves and for each other.
I will be neither perpetrator, victim nor bystander. Oppression should be exposed where one finds it, otherwise it lingers. The brother didn't bring it to light, and here we are. Traditional Michigan and Detroit news outlets, and targeted social media, would revel in taking the story, even if his employment contract stipulated he could be let go for any reason. The point would have been to put the mayor, his general counsel, and the city, on notice that all eyes would be on them going forward, making them think twice before doing such dirt again.
You did the right thing James, and you have many many people, who love and support you, including total strangers like me! The humiliation and discrimination you received from that dept. are grounds for a lawsuit, but let's not go there for now. You have a bright future ahead of you, and whoever ends up as your boyfriend, he will be one lucky dude!
I still don’t understand what being, gay, straight or anything else has to do in a workplace.
