I live in Mt.Vernon Illinois and the Music Store that George bought this Rick was Fenton's Music , owned by a local Music celebrity Red Fenton. I bought my 1961 Hagstrom and Gibson Scout Amp from him , I wasn't there when George came in , but my friend and local Guitar Expert , Jerry Yearwood (Look up "Grains Of Sand" he was lead guitar) was there and said George told Red he wanted a Black one and the one Red had was Red Sunburst . Red told him to come back tomorrow and it would be Black , Red painted it and the Guitar became Famous . Ha!Ha! Just a story that this old 70 year old KNOWS is true .

You're right, it had one pup originally ('course it was red when he bought it too) but I read he had the thing routed and a second pup added sometime later (though I dunno if I've ever noticed a photo of him playing it w/two pups). The idea of keeping guitars 'original' and guitars being 'collectible' definitely came into being post Beatles and they had no concept of it ... strictly utilitarian ...
