John Mayall-Bluesbreakers, "Walking on Sunset"

  • Shot in 1968 on Rick Shaw's "Saturday Hop", Miami, FL. John was 34 years old and had a young looking Bluesbreaker band that didn't look too enthusiastic being on TV. Check out Mick Taylor on the guitar. Sooo young and talented.

Gone but not forgotten. Have a pleasant trip to Heaven, Maestro. Many of your beloved colleagues had wonderful words dedicated to you these days. Eric Clapton told us that he will see you soon, but not yet. Mick Jagger, confesed that after Brian passing, you suggested him to call Mick Taylor and he did. The Paradise is better today and a very good blues, jazz and rock music sounds there in its maximum splendor.

Wow. First time I've seen this line-up since 1968 when I saw them at Fairfield Halls, Croydon (UK). My first-ever gig (seat cost 6/6d) and was I spoiled. The sound out of Mick Taylor's guitar that night was something I will never forget - lyrical and bitter-sweet. People stood and applauded after his solos, in the middle of songs. And Mayall, Allen and Thompson cooked as well. This dubbed video does them no justice at all, though it's great to see.

Great song. Saw them in Stockholm in -68 with the 17 year old Mick on guitar and the great Keef Hartley on drums. Ulf Lundell did a nice version with his own lyrics in swedish on his first album 1975 "Jag går på promenaden".

Yep - that was it. I went to see him first time at Fairfield expecting to hear Bare Wires and heard Laurel Canyon instead. The, like you bobe, just immersed myself in that album. By the time JM returned to Fairfield Laurel Canyon was history - now it was Room to Move time. And so it went on year after year. You never got to hear the same song twice. Loved all the gigs but hearing Mick Taylor that first time was definitive.

John Mayall based his vocal style on J.B.Lenoir, a black musician who recorded in Chicago in the 50's & 60's. Give him a listen & you'll see the resemblance. Lenoir wrote the well known blues song "Talk To Your Daughter", which Robben Ford covered. Lenoir also wrote several polical blues tunes, which was unusual at the time. Mayall paid tribute to JB Lenoir by penning the songs "I'm Gonna Fight For You JB" & "Death of JB Lenoir".

I saw this band at The Marquee and they played a blinder! A looser approach, after the highly structured Bare Wires band, meant we got a stunning quarter of an hour of Mick Taylor whipping it out. He played some wonderful slide making all sorts of racket. Certain low notes would set the glasses on the shelves behind the bar moving! They look over the moon acting out this charade. Note the extensive Charisma Bypass!

I'll never forget the day the Daily Mail announced Mick Taylor had joined the Stones - 'from John Maynall's' Jazz Band' (sic).
I was among the first 50 to park themselves in front of the stage, the night before the Stones' London gig in Hyde Park (July 69) - mainly to listen to Mr Taylor again. Funny to see yourself on the 'Stones in the Park' clips all these years later.
    'twas in another lifetime...'

Back in the 60s the theory was that you could not play it live and have it sound like the record...TV also was not known for it's sound quality so everyone did the cordless, amp less lip syncs. Rick Shaw even refused to hire our garage/cover band because we didnt play the songs note for note to the record!

I agree. I believe a man's guitar is his for a reason and music is an expressive art which is entirely subjective.
I don't believe that guitars are some sacred totem that must be worshiped. It's not public property and the man has the right to do with his what he will.

No amps, not even a harmonica being played! I mean not even a remote attempt to look real, and the bad looks COMPLETELY lifeless bored. Still, good song by one great band. I wouldn't blame John, I suspect the TV station forced this on them.. Mick Jagger was saying these shows often don't allow time for rehearsals or getting the sound right so it's mime or nothing. Any group wants to get what exposure they can. At first I thought this was a bunch of kids pretending to be Bluesbreakers but I recognized Taylor.

You seem to know a little about TV production. I'll give you the rest of the story. Chroma-Key made it's debut in 1968. There was no way to key out 2 cameras at the same time back then. We had no budget for editing nor did we have the ability to edit 2" video tape. This was done "live". I took a loop of 16mm film leader, punched holes in the strip, colorized the strip with colored markers for the effect.
So your "sloppy" comment is without merit. Now you know the rest of the story.

I'd be interested to know the background to this clip, conkyjoe.
At the time (late 60's) there was a stand-off between the mainstream media and blues culture. I am amazed Mayall ever agreed to mime on a show like this as there was so much snobbery (on both sides). Mainstream TV didn't cover people like John Mayall. For Mayall, mainstream TV was infradig. This comes overclearly in the body language of all four musos here. So how did this recording happen at all? I'm intrigued!

I totally agree that what becomes public art is up for criticism, but it also doesn't really change the fact that his guitars are his to do with what he will.
I think there's a difference between being critical and being indignant senselessly and without merit about something that isn't really yours to be indignant about e.g. the mods a man makes to his own equipment. If you don't like his mods, fine, as long as you don't pretend you have a say in what he does with his guitars.
