When you have to use by-guess and by- gally to find the belt size for your pully can be a nightmare sometimes. Hopefully you can find the right belt. Getting closer to starting the pony and the big diesel engine. COOL!!!!
I will never rebuild a D2 governor but I am fascinated by the mechanical detail of every part of the D2! I vicariously watch RUclips content of engine, transmission disassembly, through the eyes of my much younger self. I am certainly waiting for the Minneapolis Moline completion but the detail that you provide on all your component repair is very engaging. Thanks for consistently excellent content!
The thing that is the most fascinating to me on this first gen stuff is it came totally from someones mind there was nothing existing for them to look at and go from , that's the genius of engeneering.

Keep up the interesting work and documentation of these old machines. As they become true relics there seems to be both less and less people who know much, and your videos will be invaluable for those of us trying to keep them running.
There is a old school way to measure the belt size with a string and get a general idea what size would fit the best. Really like how senior did the explanation and can't wait to see his magneto rebuild.
@@squatch253 Great to hear that, hope the belt issue gets also fixed. It seems from the video to me, that the newer belt is slightly longer then the very early style one.
Use 1/4 inch hose and go around the pulleys. Then measure length,then pulley width,then if it fractional horsepower or automotive. A 50 inch long 1/2 inch fractional horsepower gates belt would be a 6850. A 1/2 inch automotive would be a 9500.

Well, this has been the simplest and fastest component refurbishment in this series so far but still absolutely fascinating. It being a governor the most important part that he replaced was the spring. They can look perfectly fine and be easily weakened beyond specs simply due to age. Definitely worth watching. 👌
For that broken carb body you might try using thermite welding/casting. Take EVERYTHING off the cast iron, pack it in a heat resistant material, then use thermite to recast the missing material followed by machining. Watch some videos about thermite welding rails in Europe.
Thanks Bud. As always Toby's eye twitching intensiveness to detail. I think I can fix the busted carb float bowl and the broken throttle bodies. I'll pay shipping.
I suggest if you have an old belt to use for a measuring device, put the part up close and straight edge the pullys then snug up the nuts to hold it, that done you can trim the belt “to fit” then remove it and measure it. The process works on mower deck’s if someone has put a different size drive pully on the spindle.

Excellent video at least I am not the only guy that drives the parts store people crazy with odd length of belts. Last summer I needed a belt for my L10 Cummins diesel engine and it took 4 attempts to get the right 8 rib serpentine belt figured out I had just bought the engine and it didn't have any belts or filters and it was quite a challenge to find the parts. I have a bunch of old belts that I keep when replacing a belt and when I have an odd size I find a longer belt cut it to fit and take that to the store to find a new belt.

Those are a neat little governor my dad used one on an old automotive engine (truck) that he had driving a Lincoln tractor pack welder you can fit them to anything thats got a belt to drive them
6:18 that's actually how the tool looks. Here in Europe even after the war we still had those kinds of nuts used for various low profile applications, not as common as it once used to be, but you still stumble upon them. A friend of mine has an entire set i borrow from once in a blue moon, mostly for my old German mill.
First time I see you "shortcut" bearings by using a swing press instead of the actual press. I use the swing press all the time 😂 but never expected it for you Toby, no matter how lightly it is on the shaft. It was a cute little hammer I have to say, almost a gasket maker.
For light loads like this you can cut a piece out of a too long drive belt and glue it back together. I did it lots of times with washing machine belts (they often have weird sizes and cost a fortune). It lasts a long time if you do a straight and clean cut and use a good, suitable glue.
A belt that size will absorb more power than the governor actually uses to operate - (bearing friction + spring tension is the only load on the governor)
Was surprised at how small the governor weights were on that 🤔 I'm assuming that they don't need mass weight due to being quite a high revving 2 stroke 🤔 another great video ty 👍

I'm sure I've seen online a belt selection tool that takes certain parameters: width, number of pulleys, diameter of pulleys, distance between centres and then spits out a specification. A cursory search doesn't bring it up but I have no doubt the location will jump, unbidden, into my head once I stop thinking about it.
I really enjoy watching your show!!! The shop is the coolest most organized ever. Couple notes of interest...You used a SK socket to pound on not your Snap On. SK is still a high-quality brand. The small bearing on the end got re-used. Surprised you did not replace that. You can reuse those bearings just wash out the old grease, inspect, (if no pits good) then just repack and go. The other bearings were NOS Cat bearings which are a high quality. Replacement bearing lead us to a political topic that we both want to avoid. SKF or FAG (can't believe that name) are the two top choices for me. Even then you have to check country of mfr. German or Austria are good. Some Japanese bearings are pretty good also. Nico---something??? There is another Japanese mfr that is good also. I will NOT use China made bearings period. The local bearing house argues with me every time. Great Show!!!
Usually it’s not too bad to find a different length belt. I know Napa belts just change a couple numbers. A 9660 is 66” and a 9630 is 63 or something like that
I’m curious if there’s any recommended hours to change the oil in the governor or is that one of those types of parts where you just check it once in a while and keep it topped up.
My governor shaft was froze up on my D315 in the Bucyrus Erie shovel when i first went to get it going. I did not know about the oil in it. i should probably check that out. I had Belt issues with my pony electric start. cat number didn't cross reference to the right size also.
I've sold a lot of those Dayco belts in my former 25 years at the parts store. They are available in 1/2" increments. Some questions. What happens if the belt fails? Does the governor spring fully open the throttle?
Quick question, larger bearings looked like they are shielded so oil would have access, new bags are sealed. Probably doesn't matter given the limited run time on these vs the main engine and this obviously isn't your first rodeo... Really appreciate your efforts in this series. Mike
Hey quick question, I know it’s not D2 related. I’m working on an international Td6 61 series. Pulled the motor and replacing the rear main seal and clutch work. I’m having a real hard time finding the rear main seal. It’s the rubber seal not the felt. If you could point me in the right direction that would be awesome. I’m west coast so, no luck out here.

2 questions-- 1:Are you aware the broken flanges on cast-iron carb can be 'built up' with braze and machined back as good as new? 2: Does a starting engine ever idle? (or more like a generator which only runs at governed speed)
My governor spring just broke and I am having trouble finding the part number to that spring. You mentioned you were able to get a new old stock spring. Would you happen to have the part number to that spring.
Squatch, I generally understand how the governor works but I'm puzzled by what determines the "steady state" rpms. How does the governor hold the engine at a particular rpm? The flywheel weights? Are they calibrated?
I would assume if the governor belt would break the engine would try to run full throttle. Is there a protection for that or will the engine withstand WOT operation.
I have a governor question. D24U12XX. My pony will not run above idle ever after I push the throttle all the way in. I can move the governor lever by hand and it will increase RPMs, and as soon as I let go, it returns to idle. Any ideas?
It sounds like you’ve either got a weak or disconnected governor arm spring - because the flyweights on the inside act to close the throttle down, and the spring on the outside acts to open it up. When fully adjusted, the forces between the two even out to give you the proper high speed RPM. When you manually move the governor arm, you’re simply doing the spring’s job of opening the throttle up.
@squatch253 yea, when the pony isn't running, the governor spring pulls the linkage to WOT. I ordered a new spring. Any tips on adjusting it? Should I start with the spring fully compressed at WOT? Then, adjust the screw out to the desired max rpm?
Way to late now but, Why no take a worn say off the Iron Mistress and replace it with the new belt since that one has more adjustability? will you go back and check that oil level so it has time to flow to the far end and provide luberication for the ball bearing that is not sealed and the bushings?
I'm surprised with the extent you are going to keep this machine original, that you would use a modern Dayco belt. A Gates without the ribs on top would be a better choice for originality.
Might be a stupid question, but I noticed there is no thread sealer on the screws that go into the belt pulley, are there not any problems with that small amount of oil leaking out past the threads of the bolts over time, or is there just not enough in there for it to leak out?
@@richardthompson6366 There was a guy I knew,one pet phrase of his was about people complaining of being hanged with new rope. I would puzzle over those words from time to time. Hangman's rope was lightly oiled so the noose would pull tight quick. Older rope worn some was a lot more slick. Much older,it stood a chance of breaking . Just how tight the knot was made was critical. The idea was to break a person's neck,least suffering. There were quite a few details,all had to be just so. Let the guy drop too far,his head would come off. Personally,I think that is a good idea. Guarantees no slow death by strangulation. And cheaper than a guillotine. So some people are going to squawk because it isn't new rope. Some because it is. Some people complain or criticise no matter what. No matter how little they actually know,they find stuff to complain about. Just because it's different. Or because it isn't. So I finally figured out my friend's phrase,what he meant by it. As in,leave me alone,it's mine it ain't yours. You do what you want with your stuff. And sure enough,there were people who would complain about that. Human nature is what it is,some people will complain about anything at all,right up to moment the rope stops the complaining. Most of the guys here have a tradesman mentality. And are interested, what it takes to get it done right. The wear and damage means not everyone shares that mentality.
I have to ask you said the old bearings seemed good but you went ahead and replaced them did you keep the old bearings for use later if need be or not thanks for sharing buddy

Have you found any stamp marking like some one initial, i am told that man who worked on machines at the caterpillar company were aloud to put there mark on what they work on in building the machine, there is an 80 yr old man that lives up the road from me he work for cat since he was 19 he says my d8 is one that he work on York caterpillar plant that is York pa cat plant here closed the doors in the 1990s do to greed

Seriously for anything Industrial that governor is about as delicate as jewelry! Amazing they were able to survive as long as they have???
I wonder if it would stretch enough in the first hour of service. Maybe a slightly used belt would do the trick in a pinch?

It almost looks like an older 4wd front spindle nut socket would have worked to remove the nut with the 4 slots.

I'm surprised caterpillar made their own governor for those and not just use an off the shelf governor like a Pierce.

17395 or 17400 will get you there. Your belt is 39 inches circumference. So try a 39 1/2 or a 40 inch.
