I went on a segment spree, turned for relatives and my favorite doctors, I have a few. Then I got more into natural turnings. I enjoy making something out of what might appear to be nothing. That don't mean I don't love the master pieces you produce. Looking forward to your next piece.
Thanks Gerald. I probably do more turnings from logs than segments. Mostly segment work can take a lot more time. But I love them both about the same. Also I like stave turnings which are lots of fun. Take care, Gary
Thanks so much for doing a video showing woodturner pro to those who are not familiar with it. I bought the complete package including segment pro years ago Segmented bowls are a great way to use the many scraps of wood that we all have in our shops. Love your videos.
Thank you very much for watching. I can do more of these types. Next time I do one that is a bit different I just might do that. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart in clarifying segmented turning. This is exactly what I need to start down this path. I will be purchasing this very soon. BTW, I purchased a Wen Air Filter unit for my shop. It surely removes that residual wood dust from the air that settles everywhere. I think I picked up an allergic reaction to wood dust over the holiday time. So when you say “dust mask and face shield” on, now I know why. Might want to add a hazmat suit to keep the dermatitis at bay. Lol!
Thanks, I followed your demonstration through and planned my first projects with this software. Hands on is the best way to learn the bells and whistles!
I've turned segmented bowl and some vases for several years and my biggest problem is how much bigger to make the next ring. I found a program on the web that help some but still come up to small or to large. So I started using wider strip for the segments and making the rings 1/2" larger it works but I have a lot of waste. Will check out Woodturner Pro. Have a good day. Bill
Thank you for watching. Woodturner Pro will allow you to use the least amount of wood you will need. But you can still add to an area you are just not certain of what you want to do. Best of luck, Gary
Thanks for the tip on this software. I had been using Autocad to plan all my segments but it requires me to figure my cut lists. I'll definitely check them out.
Thanks you Tom. I have a CAD program called Bobcad. I bought for software to create things and also make files to run on my CNC. I still use it for a lot of segmented turnings. Like the one I am working on now. Mostly to get the right dimensions to make a dizzy bowl style turning. Thanks for watching, Gary
That software looks like a very efficient way to visualize unlimited combinations. It wood be fun even just to play around with for the trial period. Thanks for demonstrating it, Gary.
It is fun software to just play around with for sure. There are lots of times I just open it up with nothing in mind and see what I come up with. For sure you can do the same with paper and pencil. I did that for years at work laying out the patterns from a drawing on large sheets of paper just to figure out how I would construct them. The 30 day trial is a full blown version so a good way to have a look at it. Take care, Gary
Thanks Gary! As a visual person this made a lot of sense to me. A great presentation. I watch all sorts of techie videos, most of which I’ll never use, but it interests me all the same. Cheers, Rick
Thanks Rick. It can sure be handy for the right thing. I also what a lot of techie stuff and a lot of it I will never do but still interesting to watching. Take care, Gary
Hi Gary, I purchased this program along with the segment pro and lamination pro. woodturner pro I have not used but your simple explanation has encouraged me to give a try. lets see more of these videos as I found it east to follow . Thanks for producing it.
Thank you Patrick. I know that Segmente Pro is very easy to use but I find it limiting in designing my own shapes. I hardly ever use it at all. Woodturner Pro gives me many more options that I like such as moving segments around to save wood and also to modify my shape.
Another excellent look at Woodturner Pro, Gary. Lloyd Johnson must really like you! I’m sure his sales are definitely going to soar, thanks to your videos. Nice job, my friend. I look forward to your next turning video, this Friday. Stay well, …..Gord
Thanks Gord! If his sales do soar I may have to ask for a cut in the action. But I doubt if he knows me from any other old maker of wood shavings LOL. Take care and see you Friday if not sooner! Gary
Not only did I watch the entire video I saved it for future viewing as well. The program that you used is now on my radar for tools I want to have to do segmented turning. I've watched you create segmented items for a few years now and while I have always found them beautiful and intriguing I would not attempt one without this program. Thank you for sharing how you create your fascinating art.
I have done some segmenting and lots of waste. I have on the edge about purchasing this software. Tutorials like this really help me to give it a shot. Please keep these coming. Thanks for all your videos. They are enjoyable.
Thank you very much. I am sure you would love the program as much as I do. I can do another one in at sometime. As I hear more questions about it I can come up with ideas of what to make. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great video? Thank you for sharing and explaining it so good. I looked at it for a few seconds and thought, man this is way beyond me. Thankfully I continue watching. Thank you so much, I think I really can do this!
Thank you Bob. I am sure you would be able to do it. And you would have 30 days to run the full version to figure out if you could. I only say that because if it is something you think you would like use and would be helpful it sure does not hurt to try. Best of luck, Gary
Thank you very much Lori. I enjoy making them but sure looking forward to getting back to the lathe. A few more weeks before I see the doctor to find out how my ankle is doing. Hoping I will at least be able to put some weight on it. Thanks again, Gary
Thank you Jim. Yes I sure like it and use it a lot. Such as making a bowl out of staves. You get all the information for those as well. I have used it to help with even non segmented turnings. Just to have a better look at an idea I might have. Thanks for watching, Gary
Have been thinking about getting this program, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Really appreciate seeing it in action. May not get it right away, but after watching this, when the time comes I won’t have to think about it. Thanks again.
Thank you for watching. I find it to be another great tool to have. The 30 day trial is a good way to look at the software. Not sure what happens after 30 days. Some software will not open and some will just not let you save your work. Not trying to sell it but getting all the dimension right can save a lot of money in wasted cuts on expensive wood. Just my 2 cents on that. Thanks for watching, Gary
Although a number of CAD programmes I'm familiar with - including the "Wood turning pro" shown - Oh I do wish all this was available in my youth. My life, and many others, would have been much more simple. Quite often though if I print the design I draw in a centre line - if one is omitted. I still refer to my past and consider a datum line or face is important. I still enjoy setting a design out and using geometric construction - much of which appears to have been forgotten. Thank you Gary for another informative video. Many - as I - appreciate it!
I agree with you on wishing these programs were around years ago. As a wood pattern maker I had to make a layout of everything I made. I would use trig to layout all the angles. Even segments were all laid out and cut one at a time using a bandsaw and a disk sander to sand to the line. But they were way to big for a wedgie sled which was not even thought of back then. I still prefer some of those older ways of doing things. Thanks for watching, Gary
Haha, your excitement about this program comes through loud and clear, Gary! Your enthusiasm is contagious and I'll bet they see a sales increase thanks to your excellent tutorial! I will probably never be a segment turner but it sure is fun watching you plan, cut, glue and create! Great job, buddy! 😊 Phil
Thank you Phil. That was the last take it easy doctors orders video and now it is off to wood turning YIPPIE! If I can remember where the lathe is and how to turn it on LOL. Well that is a big fat lie because I turned something for this coming Friday. Small and easy but I am an old man so I have to work back into this. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Another wonderful demonstration of the Woodturners Pro software. I've had it installed for several years, and you've explained stuff I've struggled to sort out. Please keep 'em coming as you have time. Thanks ever so much!
Gary, this was very informative. I have this program and am getting back to turning after adding on to my shop and rearranging things. I am going to do some straight sided platters and then try something like you did in this video. I have some padauk, just need to get some maple.
Thank you very much. Might be a very long video to do in one but as a matter of fact I am in the process of turning the one I showed in my last video where I first showed Woodturner Pro so watch for it in a few weeks. Gary
Thank you Doug. Look at my last 3 or so videos they are all about Lamination Pro. I injured my ankle so I am doing some software vides till I can get back out in the shop. Gary
That is my thought as well Jim. It was very easy for me to make a choice. Lloyd who wrote the software is a wood turner as well . I think he keeps the price down because he wants to see others enjoy this wonderful hobby. Take care, Gary
I like everything you do, and I've told you my favorite (the glue tendons). This is my second best. I downloaded 3D Design Pro and Lamination Pro, and I will probably download both Seg Pro and Woodturner Pro. I'm turning my own cremation urn when I'm no longer in this world. I'd like to know where my ashes will be and I created the vessel. It may sound morbid. Some of my friends think it's great. Thanks again
Thank you very much Rusty. Lamination Pro is a great piece of software for sure. I use Woodturner Pro the most and use the Lamination Pro now and then. Nothing wrong with your plans and does not seem morbid. Thanks for watching, Gary
Although I love your traditional turning content, I really like your segmented content as well. Appreciate the detail to help us get through our first project.
Gary, I love watching any video you upload...you always have something for me to learn. More instruction on Woodturner Pro is always welcome because I can always improve my skill with using it. I love turning segmented bowls and find them to be so rewarding and challenging. I also love your videos explaining how you made a particular jig. Thanks so much!
Thank you Carol. Happy you enjoyed the video. It is pretty cool software for sure. I have used the Lamination Pro as well. But mostly to look at a design idea I might have. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary... Very interesting video... I can see how useful this program would be when planning a project... And I can tell that the you really enjoy the technical stuff... I'm afraid that I tend to just "wing it " and hope for the best... anything else just hurts my poor brain...Haha... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi Andy, I enjoy grabbing a chunk of a tree and winging it as well. But some of this hardwood I buy cost so much I do like putting enough planning in to make sure I do not waste any wood. Another way of saying I really like the technical stuff LOL Thanks for watching my friend and watching some of the things you do I am pretty sure your head is not hurting doing it! Take care, Gary
I have been using Woodturner Pro for over 20 years. It is great. I thought your explanations were good but could have been a bit more detailed. It's hard for me to follow the cursor when someone else it moving it. In my opinion, some narration about where on the screen you are working would be in order. Like you I also love 3D Design Pro. You can do some crazy shapes with that program. And like you mentioned, it's free with Woodturner Pro. You have to buy Woodturner Pro but the support is well worth it. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. I did not know for years that Lloyd is local to me. I have never met him but did talk with him on the phone back when I bought the software. Yes I know I hate trying to follow a mouse curser on other peoples videos. I have not done enough of these types videos to realize I was doing the same. Next time I will enlarge the cursor and that should help.
Thank you Tim. I had Lightburn running for something else. It did not use it for anything in this video. But I have used it along with this program in another video I have done. I used Woodturner Pro, Bobcad and Lightburn to create and make a new design I was working on.
Sorry Gary. I must have missed this video. I’ve been drawing my bowl designs for a while now. This video has really caught my interest. I’m going to look into this software. I hope it’s easy as I’m not very good on the computer. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Charles and thanks for watching. It is actually very easy to use. The 30 day free demo is a good way to see if you like it. Just start with something very simple. Take care, Gary
Gary, I am a relatively new turner (now retired with plenty of time!) and have really enjoyed a number of your videos. Very detailed and easy for a beginner to follow. I have recently purchased Woodturner Pro and Segment Pro and your down-to-earth Woodturner Pro tutorial came at the right time. How about doing the same with Segment Pro? Thanks again, Bruce
Hi Bruce and congrats on the retirement. I did that almost 11 years ago. I keep very busy and love being retired. I could do a video on Segment Pro but can not say exactly when. In the mean while if you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try my best to help. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks for the tutorial. I am in the early stages of leaning this software. I have replicated your steps and have a design but I'm stumped on the what would be the final turned wall thickness. I don't know what it is or how to change it. Would I just design a smaller internal diameter and turn it down?
Thank you Tom. It would be easy to change the inside diameters to make sure you had stock. If I knew more of what the shape was you have I could help. You should be able to drag the inside lines to help with that shape as well. Then snap the segments to fit that. Let me know if this makes sense. Gary
Great video Gary, and thanks for expanding the things you can do in woodturner pro! Next time I use it I will be playing a bit more because all I have been doing is making simple bowls with it but getting all the measurements without all the math is what I like! Cheers Al
Thank you Al, for sure one of the great features is getting all those dimensions so easily. Sometimes I will change the layers so I can cut the strips all the same width. You can do that on some designs but not all. As straight sided wall is easy to do but it might add just a little more to turn on the inside. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, thanks so much for the detailed, informative follow-up video; it is very much appreciated. As crazy as it might seem, I'm curious if you have ever designed something with the software that you didn't like after turning it? If so, why was that?
Hi Grant and thanks for watching. So far I have liked everything I have done. But the great thing is it should look a lot like the design. Although I still make final adjustments at the lathe. But I am working on something I designed on Woodturner Pro and am not sure how it will turn out. You will be seeing that soon. Take care, Gary
Gary, I do like these video's very much. You do an excellent job explaining as you go. I recently bought the Woodturner pro package and am trying to learn it's sequence of operations. I see you started with the 3D Design Pro to create the profile. I'll keep watching. I am making your glue press today.
Thank you Mike. The 3D Design Pro is a handy program. You can even import an image in it and trace the shape. Have a great time using it and making cool things to turn. Gary
Great video Gary. I have been playing around with the free trial while it is too cold to work in the shop. I plan on buying it soon. Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you Jamie. When it is cold is when I like sitting at the computer and designing something or the other. Thinking on a new cutting fixture as well for some odd pieces. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary this was very informative. I design using Pro-engineer (Creo). Creo is a very powerful program but it is way to expensive and a large learning curve. Your software is just what I’ve been looking for. Great information. Thanks
For sure Pro-E would be costly for segment work. I would say that with Wood turner Pro being designed for segment work it would be much better. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, I do like this type of video. It gives me some insight into your thought/design process. One drawback for me is that I’m a Mac user. After a look on the web it seems there’s not anything out there for Mac’s. I may be looking for a cheap windows OS laptop 😕. I think something simple.🤷🏻♂️
Thank you Skip. They do talk about using a virtual machine on the Mac but I don't think I would do that. I have bought a few cheap laptops for running things I use in the shop. But I also have 2 Windows 7 desktop's that run my CNC milling machine. There used to be a great computer recycle store near me and I have bought some nice laptops for less than $100.00. But they seem to have closed up. Take care, Gary
Thank you Mike. Yes Woodturner Pro also has Lamination Pro which I have and it works great. A bit more complex to figure out but it is very powerful software. You can see all the software he has on his web page. The other piece is called Segmented Pro. He said he made that for people that just want to grab a design and make it. I prefer to have all the control on what I make and try and come up with my own ideas. But almost all shapes have been made. Nature has come up with most and all we can do is make a few changes. Thanks for watching, Gary
gary, I have just whach our video on woodworkers pro segmental turning I just wonder did it on open segment turning as I do open segment turning myself using chefwaerkits using EZ index wheel. I also use the America inperel system as I do not like the metric system made be im to old Bob, Gloucester England UK.
Hi Bob, Woodturner Pro has open segments listed. I have never used it. Segment Pro has it as well. i bought the complete package and mostly use Woodturner Pro. When buying all of the software it is a big savings. Now I want to play around with Woodturner Pro and figure it out. I may need to do some software videos for a bit. Take care, Gary
Very interesting! Maybe someone can explain to me how you cut these segments. Many have lengths or widths that requires precision to the thousandth of an inch. Can one do that on a one of the sleds like the wedges sled? Do you round the values to th tenth of an inch?
Yes I use a wedgie sled to make my segments. i have used a miter saw but a wedgie sled is much better. When I first made segments it was for wood patterns I made at work for foundry use. We cut those on a band saw and sanded the ends on a disk sander. This was long before segment bowl turning came to be. Yes you can round it to a tenth of an inch but I use a digital caliper so I do make them to what the program comes up wiht. thanks for watching. I will do a video on wedgie sleds if needed. Gary
This was very interesting Gary. I'm not ready to get into segmented turning, but really appreciate seeing the software and other tools you use to create your turnings. It was especially interesting seeing how splines can be applied to this kind of problem and how the two packages work so well together.
Thanks Mark. For sure using those splines can really be helpful fine tuning your design. I really do like this type of stuff! Thanks for watching, Gary
Great video!! I have the software and am trying to learn how to use it. Which other of your videos have more illustration on using the software? Thanks again.
Thank you Tom, I know I show it in a few others. They would be segmented turnings for sure. I know this one for sure: ruclips.net/video/wHS3KOJ8Kos/видео.html I also use it to help design shapes I want to get out of a chunk of wood. But I have not shown that. Thanks for watching, Gary
Always enjoy your videos. All are well done. I looked at Woodturner Pro a few months ago and used it very little. So I let the trial issue expire. But now that I saw it in action, may I will buy the software. I got a little discouraged with the feature ring software that is separate from the Woodturner Pro and perhaps the reason why I did not buy the entire package. Will need to revisit all of software that goes along with Woodturner Pro.
Thanks John. If I only got one of the three programs it would be Woodturner Pro. I do not use the Segment Pro but got it to get a good deal on all 3 products.
Do I need seg pro if I buy wtp? Looking at buying the three pack: Woodturner PRO/3D Design PRO & Lamination PRO and want to know with all that if seg pro is necessary?
Thanks, very interesting. I looked the software up. Unfortunately, near as I can tell, It’s only available for Windows users. That leaves a bunch of us out.😣
That is a shame and I had no idea it only ran on Windows. I looked at their page and they talk about running it on a virtual machine which sounds like a nuisance to me. Years ago I played around doing that with Linux just for fun. But never really did anything with it.
Thanks Gary. This was really informative and I wonder if it has New Zealand woods listed? We don't seem to have the different colours you do but I could still use it and this video is a real help in assisting me to make a decision.
Thank you Dave. I am sure it has some of the woods that you have access to. Basically I just use the colors as a guide. They are close to what the wood looks like but not exact Thanks for watching, Gary
Yes I have the complete set of his software. I prefer Woodturner Pro. I find it easier to create my designs. Segment Pro does have a lot of pre-designed shapes though.
Hi James, what you can do is highlight all the rows and then change the size. You would need to change the outside and inside diameter and also change the thickness of the rings. If you would it reduced by 75% then change those numbers using by that amount. Hope that helps, Gary
Hi Gary: Glad to hear that your are recovering well and will soon be back in the shop doing more woodturning videos. I very much enjoyed this video and have been wondering about this software as I have seen it at some point in the past. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this software and yes it does look very easy to use. I expect that there will be a number of purchases of this software following your video and I will be one of those making that purchase. Thanks again and best wishes from Prince Edward County, Ontario Canada. Ted M
Thank you Ted. Yes I will wrap up the video for the Fridays video as the turning is done. It is very easy to use and I just wanted to show that. As I stated I get nothing for showing it other than hopefully help with the mystery of segments. Take care, Gary
Good video, thanks. I too use Woodturner Pro and like it a lot. It can be very versatile. I also have their Segment Pro but don't use it much. I have much more control with Woodturner Pro. I'm new to your channel and have already learned some new things so thanks very much.
Thank you very much Gary! I have the whole package and very seldom use Segment Pro. He told me he created that for those that like things worked out for them. I am just the opposite. As a matter of fact if I want to try something new to me and others have already done it I try not to watch those videos before I work out how I want to do it. Thanks again....Gary from Oregon
@@garygardens yes it sure can be a small world. I was born in Portland and live in Garden Home Oregon which is next to Portland. Been through Bellingham a few times as well. We have some cold days coming up soon and I suppose you do as well. Take care, Gary
Yes that is a shame. I did read something on the page about running a virtual machine but I doubt if I would do that. It would not be a big problem for me as I have computers that run my CNC machine and I would load it on them if I did use a Mac. Because that software runs off Windows as well. Hopefully someone will develop some that will.
@@ThePapa1947 I have tried the virtual machine once before and was very disappointed though it was several years ago. I can hope that something will come along. Good turning.
Yes that would be nice. He is a small company and probably not all that easy to write it out for a Mac. Maybe pick up a cheap laptop that has windows on it. Even an older used one will run the software. Best of luck, Gary
Nice video I wish I had a computer though lol I'm not found of them I wouldn't have my phone if I didn't have to pay bills on it lol I have been trying to figure out my ankle cuts on 6-in boards 2 in thick 66 in across I was wanting to build a banded cypress tank for me and my dad making root beer and I keep failing every time at the perfect angle lol
My version says 3.1 on it and was not aware that there was a newer version. I will check that out. Where did you see it? Want to make sure it is the same Woodturner Pro that I use. I just remembered he is from Portland near where I live so I may have to check in with what he has now. Gary
@ThePapa1947 it is from Woodworkers Supply (looks like they are New Mexico) Woodturner Pro Suite V3 Designed by Lloyd Johnson, Woodturner Pro Suite V3 offers three woodturning software applications in one package: 3D Design PRO lets you create a two dimensional vessel wall profile and then see a rendering in three dimensions. Start from scratch or open one of over 100 sample drawings. Designed for all woodturners, not just segmented turners. Woodturner PRO allows you to add rings - flat, compound, staves and veneer - to your designs with a single mouse click. Decide how many segments per ring and use arrow keys to identify outside and inside diameters. Lamination PRO helps your design and construct feature rings for segmented vessels from laminations. the price said $60.00 I'm not sure if this is the same, please let me know as I would like to purchase this software.
I can understand that. I learned and worked with imperial dimensions. It is what I know. When I watch something that is done in metric I have a little idea what it will be but if not I convert it. Kind of like when I get a lot of comments not in English so I convert them and respond in the viewers language. Trust me that is a lot of work. Because lasers seem to be mostly metric I keep the speed of the laser in metric. Not sure why it is just what I started doing. Thanks for watching, Gary
Good explanation. I have the software, and use it some. Need to use it more! I also have segmented pro which for my purposes seems to be a little easier. You do a great job.
Thank you Albert. I have the Segmented Pro as well. It is pretty much all setup for lots of turnings and you can adjust with it. I very seldom use it as I find the Woodturner Pro better for making adjustments. Both are great pieces of software. Thanks for watching, Gary
Love this video. We've been playing around with this software that's available in our woodchucks club, and our expert is away right now so i was so glad to find this. It'll be a big help. Im sharing it with my friends. Thank you very much
I went on a segment spree, turned for relatives and my favorite doctors, I have a few. Then I
got more into natural turnings. I enjoy making something out of what might appear to be
nothing. That don't mean I don't love the master pieces you produce. Looking forward to
your next piece.
Thanks Gerald. I probably do more turnings from logs than segments. Mostly segment work can take a lot more time. But I love them both about the same. Also I like stave turnings which are lots of fun.
Take care,
Gary
Gary That is something I will be ordering when I get moved to my New shop around the end of the year. Ron
Sounds gook Ron I think you will really like it.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, you intrigued me so much that I purchased the program. Now I need to play with it so I can make a segmented bowl, vase or platter.
I think you will be very happy with the program. It is fun just to play around with it.
Have fun,
Gary
Thanks so much for doing a video showing woodturner pro to those who are not familiar with it. I bought the complete package including segment pro years ago Segmented bowls are a great way to use the many scraps of wood that we all have in our shops. Love your videos.
Thanks so much and for sure we all make lots of scraps.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated!
Gary
Thank you! A great tutorial! Hope you do more videos with this clever program!
Thank you very much for watching. I can do more of these types. Next time I do one that is a bit different I just might do that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart in clarifying segmented turning. This is exactly what I need to start down this path. I will be purchasing this very soon.
BTW, I purchased a Wen Air Filter unit for my shop. It surely removes that residual wood dust from the air that settles everywhere. I think I picked up an allergic reaction to wood dust over the holiday time. So when you say “dust mask and face shield” on, now I know why. Might want to add a hazmat suit to keep the dermatitis at bay. Lol!
Thank you Robert, happy it cleared a few things up. And best of luck when you give segments a try.
The Wen unit works great.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks, I followed your demonstration through and planned my first projects with this software. Hands on is the best way to learn the bells and whistles!
Thank you Mike. Happy it worked out for you.
Gary
Like it, thanks
Thank you Wayne I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
I've turned segmented bowl and some vases for several years and my biggest problem is how much bigger to make the next ring. I found a program on the web that help some but still come up to small or to large. So I started using wider strip for the segments and making the rings 1/2" larger it works but I have a lot of waste. Will check out Woodturner Pro. Have a good day. Bill

Best of luck,
Gary
Thanks for the tip on this software. I had been using Autocad to plan all my segments but it requires me to figure my cut lists. I'll definitely check them out.
Thanks you Tom. I have a CAD program called Bobcad. I bought for software to create things and also make files to run on my CNC.
I still use it for a lot of segmented turnings. Like the one I am working on now. Mostly to get the right dimensions to make a dizzy bowl style turning.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for that excellent tutorial. I have never seen one of those programs even explained before. Very interesting.
Thank you very much. It is pretty cool software for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I love this kind of content. I am just starting segmented woodturning and I just purchased the software.
Thank you very much Thomas. You will love segmented turning and the software.
Take care,
Gary
That software looks like a very efficient way to visualize unlimited combinations. It wood be fun even just to play around with for the trial period. Thanks for demonstrating it, Gary.
It is fun software to just play around with for sure. There are lots of times I just open it up with nothing in mind and see what I come up with. For sure you can do the same with paper and pencil. I did that for years at work laying out the patterns from a drawing on large sheets of paper just to figure out how I would construct them.
The 30 day trial is a full blown version so a good way to have a look at it.
Take care,
Gary
This was great. Thank you for the software introduction.
Thank you and thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Gary,
I purchased this program along with the segment pro and lamination pro. woodturner pro I have not used but your simple explanation has encouraged me to give a try. lets see more of these videos as I found it east to follow . Thanks for producing it.
Thank you Patrick. I know that Segmente Pro is very easy to use but I find it limiting in designing my own shapes.

Another excellent look at Woodturner Pro, Gary. Lloyd Johnson must really like you! I’m sure his sales are definitely going to soar, thanks to your videos. Nice job, my friend. I look forward to your next turning video, this Friday.
Stay well,
…..Gord
Thanks Gord! If his sales do soar I may have to ask for a cut in the action. But I doubt if he knows me from any other old maker of wood shavings LOL.
Take care and see you Friday if not sooner!
Gary
Not only did I watch the entire video I saved it for future viewing as well. The program that you used is now on my radar for tools I want to have to do segmented turning. I've watched you create segmented items for a few years now and while I have always found them beautiful and intriguing I would not attempt one without this program. Thank you for sharing how you create your fascinating art.
Thank you Harvey. I get nothing and expect nothing for showing the software but it is great stuff.
And Lloyd who created it is very helpful.
Gary
I have done some segmenting and lots of waste. I have on the edge about purchasing this software. Tutorials like this really help me to give it a shot. Please keep these coming. Thanks for all your videos. They are enjoyable.
Thank you very much. I am sure you would love the program as much as I do. I can do another one in at sometime. As I hear more questions about it I can come up with ideas of what to make.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great video? Thank you for sharing and explaining it so good. I looked at it for a few seconds and thought, man this is way beyond me. Thankfully I continue watching. Thank you so much, I think I really can do this!
Thank you Bob. I am sure you would be able to do it. And you would have 30 days to run the full version to figure out if you could.
I only say that because if it is something you think you would like use and would be helpful it sure does not hurt to try.
Best of luck,
Gary
Hi Gary, thank you so much for taking the time to explain this program. I watched your video several times and it sure helped. Again, thank you.
Thank you very much William. Happy you enjoyed it and it has helped.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, thank you for this kind of video! I enjoy learning different things like this!,,, and more
Thank you very much Lori. I enjoy making them but sure looking forward to getting back to the lathe.
A few more weeks before I see the doctor to find out how my ankle is doing. Hoping I will at least be able to put some weight on it.
Thanks again,
Gary
nice tutorial looking forward to Friday 👍
Thank you Jason. I am pretty happy with how it turned out..you will see this Friday.
Take care,
Gary
This is game changer! I can’t wait to try this out. Thank you!
Thank you Jim. Yes I sure like it and use it a lot.
Such as making a bowl out of staves. You get all the information for those as well. I have used it to help with even non segmented turnings. Just to have a better look at an idea I might have.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Have been thinking about getting this program, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Really appreciate seeing it in action. May not get it right away, but after watching this, when the time comes I won’t have to think about it. Thanks again.
Thank you for watching. I find it to be another great tool to have. The 30 day trial is a good way to look at the software. Not sure what happens after 30 days. Some software will not open and some will just not let you save your work.
Not trying to sell it but getting all the dimension right can save a lot of money in wasted cuts on expensive wood.
Just my 2 cents on that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks Gary. Good job as usual.
'Thank you George and thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Haha, your excitement about this program comes through loud and clear, Gary! Your enthusiasm is contagious and I'll bet they see a sales increase thanks to your excellent tutorial! I will probably never be a segment turner but it sure is fun watching you plan, cut, glue and create! Great job, buddy! 😊
Phil
Thank you Phil. That was the last take it easy doctors orders video and now it is off to wood turning YIPPIE! If I can remember where the lathe is and how to turn it on LOL.
Well that is a big fat lie because I turned something for this coming Friday. Small and easy but I am an old man so I have to work back into this.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Thank you Gary. I have been looking for this program, I think I saw a previous version quite a wile back.
Thank you Lee. Hope this helps out.
Gary
The price for all the parts of the software is well worth it. I'll be buying it soon. I've used a wedgey sled and the wedge setting triangles.
For sure the software is well worth having all that is offered.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good job
Just keeping current on this topic.
Thanks
Thanks so much!
Another wonderful demonstration of the Woodturners Pro software. I've had it installed for several years, and you've explained stuff I've struggled to sort out.
Please keep 'em coming as you have time. Thanks ever so much!
Thank you Steve. Happy it was helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
Gary
Gary, this was very informative. I have this program and am getting back to turning after adding on to my shop and rearranging things. I am going to do some straight sided platters and then try something like you did in this video. I have some padauk, just need to get some maple.
Thank you Brayton. It is very powerful software and easy to use.
Sounds like you are setup for lots of fun now.
Take care,
Gary
Great video. Like to see a video from the start of the program to the end of the bowl...the full package deal....keep up the great videos...
Thank you very much. Might be a very long video to do in one but as a matter of fact I am in the process of turning the one I showed in my last video where I first showed Woodturner Pro so watch for it in a few weeks.
Gary
Thanks!! This has helped me, a lot. I'll get on my laptop soon and see if I can apply what I've learned from this video. Thanks again.
Thank you Charles. Once you get used to how it works it is very easy to use.
Best of luck,
Gary
Hey Gary - I'd love to see more designs. And some importing Lamination Pro designs into bowls. Many thanks for sharing.
Thank you Doug. Look at my last 3 or so videos they are all about Lamination Pro. I injured my ankle so I am doing some software vides till I can get back out in the shop.
Gary
I took a quick look at their website. This software is surprisingly cheap, considering how powerful it is!!!!
That is my thought as well Jim. It was very easy for me to make a choice. Lloyd who wrote the software is a wood turner as well . I think he keeps the price down because he wants to see others enjoy this wonderful hobby.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Although I love your traditional turning content, I really like your segmented content as well. Appreciate the detail to help us get through our first project.
Thank you Jack and I hope it all goes easy and great on your first project.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, I love watching any video you upload...you always have something for me to learn. More instruction on Woodturner Pro is always welcome because I can always improve my skill with using it. I love turning segmented bowls and find them to be so rewarding and challenging. I also love your videos explaining how you made a particular jig. Thanks so much!
Thank you Carol. Happy you enjoyed the video. It is pretty cool software for sure. I have used the Lamination Pro as well. But mostly to look at a design idea I might have.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another way of saying I really like the technical stuff LOL
Thanks for watching my friend and watching some of the things you do I am pretty sure your head is not hurting doing it!
Take care,
Gary
Me as well mate. My brain hurts. lol. 🤯
Gary, thanks for sharing your planning process. Great content, as always.
Thank you Julian and thanks for watching.
Gary
Great video I really enjoyed this. Very informative. Thank you.
Thank you William and thanks for watching,
Gary
Good job. I noticed you had Lightburn on the bottom of the program. How does that fit in with the Program? Thanks Tim
Thank you Tim. I had Lightburn running for something else. It did not use it for anything in this video. But I have used it along with this program in another video I have done.
I used Woodturner Pro, Bobcad and Lightburn to create and make a new design I was working on.
I maybe insane at games put I new at woodturning and this help a lot thank you 👍
Thank you very much. I am not insane at games but I am with wood turning LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice video/tutorial Gary. Good job!
Many thanks Todd, happy you enjoyed it.
Take care,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
Gary, I am a relatively new turner (now retired with plenty of time!) and have really enjoyed a number of your videos. Very detailed and easy for a beginner to follow. I have recently purchased Woodturner Pro and Segment Pro and your down-to-earth Woodturner Pro tutorial came at the right time. How about doing the same with Segment Pro? Thanks again,
Bruce
Hi Bruce and congrats on the retirement. I did that almost 11 years ago. I keep very busy and love being retired.
I could do a video on Segment Pro but can not say exactly when. In the mean while if you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try my best to help.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great video Gary.
Thank you Jack!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great info Gary, thanks.
Thank you Ronald!
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Can you also do open segmenting with this software? I have an indexing wheel.
@@RoundTownWithMike yes you sure can.
Salut Gary c’est assez compliqué pour moi mais je suis sûr que ça aide beaucoup bravo 👏👍👋
Thank you very much Denis, happy you enjoyed the video.
Take care,
Gary
Gary this was very informative. I design using Pro-engineer (Creo). Creo is a very powerful program but it is way to expensive and a large learning curve. Your software is just what I’ve been looking for. Great information. Thanks
For sure Pro-E would be costly for segment work. I would say that with Wood turner Pro being designed for segment work it would be much better.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
Great video, Gary! Thank you... I struggle with designing feature rings. Do you know of any software that can help design feature rings?
Thank you Mike. Yes Woodturner Pro also has Lamination Pro which I have and it works great. A bit more complex to figure out but it is very powerful software. You can see all the software he has on his web page. The other piece is called Segmented Pro. He said he made that for people that just want to grab a design and make it. I prefer to have all the control on what I make and try and come up with my own ideas. But almost all shapes have been made. Nature has come up with most and all we can do is make a few changes.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
gary, I have just whach our video on woodworkers pro segmental turning I just wonder did it on open segment turning as I do open segment turning myself using chefwaerkits using EZ index wheel.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great video!! I have the software and am trying to learn how to use it. Which other of your videos have more illustration on using the software? Thanks again.
Thank you Tom, I know I show it in a few others. They would be segmented turnings for sure.
I know this one for sure: ruclips.net/video/wHS3KOJ8Kos/видео.html
I also use it to help design shapes I want to get out of a chunk of wood. But I have not shown that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks! 😊👍
Thank you Allen and thanks for watching.
Gary
Always enjoy your videos. All are well done.
I looked at Woodturner Pro a few months ago and used it very little. So I let the trial issue expire. But now that I saw it in action, may I will buy the software. I got a little discouraged with the feature ring software that is separate from the Woodturner Pro and perhaps the reason why I did not buy the entire package. Will need to revisit all of software that goes along with Woodturner Pro.
Thanks John. If I only got one of the three programs it would be Woodturner Pro. I do not use the Segment Pro but got it to get a good deal on all 3 products.
Hi Gary, Just watched but too late for me to watch this so will I'll watch again tomorrow.
You make this look so easy.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you very much Huw,
All my best,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks Gary
Thanks, Gary.... Segmented work gets a lot of respect from me, but I do not have time to do any right now. Someday.......
Thank you very much. It will still be here when you are ready,
Do I need seg pro if I buy wtp? Looking at buying the three pack: Woodturner PRO/3D Design PRO & Lamination PRO and want to know with all that if seg pro is necessary?
For the savings you get my getting all of them I would recommend getting it.
They are close to what the wood looks like but not exact
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Have you ever used SegPro by the same author? And if you have what has been your experience with it? Thanks
Yes I have the complete set of his software.
I prefer Woodturner Pro.
I find it easier to create my designs.
Segment Pro does have a lot of pre-designed shapes though.
What if you wanted the bowl to be the same shape but smaller? How could the software accomplish that for you?? Thx
Hi James, what you can do is highlight all the rows and then change the size. You would need to change the outside and inside diameter and also change the thickness of the rings.
If you would it reduced by 75% then change those numbers using by that amount.
Hope that helps,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We have something in common there for sure. We're also near neighbors, I'm in Bellingham, WA & have a daughter in Portland. Small world.
@@garygardens yes it sure can be a small world. I was born in Portland and live in Garden Home Oregon which is next to Portland. Been through Bellingham a few times as well.
We have some cold days coming up soon and I suppose you do as well.

Unfortunately this software does not work on my Mac. I wish there was something like this for the Mac.
Best of luck,
Gary
Nice video I wish I had a computer though lol I'm not found of them I wouldn't have my phone if I didn't have to pay bills on it lol I have been trying to figure out my ankle cuts on 6-in boards 2 in thick 66 in across I was wanting to build a banded cypress tank for me and my dad making root beer and I keep failing every time at the perfect angle lol
Should be easy enough. If you email me I can work it out for you.
Gary
Did you get the latest version? I saw WOODturner pro 3 online for $60. Is this correct or did I find something different?
My version says 3.1 on it and was not aware that there was a newer version. I will check that out. Where did you see it? Want to make sure it is the same Woodturner Pro that I use.
I just remembered he is from Portland near where I live so I may have to check in with what he has now.
Gary
@ThePapa1947 it is from Woodworkers Supply (looks like they are New Mexico)
Woodturner Pro Suite V3
Designed by Lloyd Johnson, Woodturner Pro Suite V3 offers three woodturning software applications in one package:
3D Design PRO lets you create a two dimensional vessel wall profile and then see a rendering in three dimensions.
Lamination PRO helps your design and construct feature rings for segmented vessels from laminations.
the price said $60.00
I'm not sure if this is the same, please let me know as I would like to purchase this software.
@@timrauscher3965yes this is the same software that I have. I guess Lloyd must have gave them a deal on them to sell at that price.
@@ThePapa1947 now I need to order it for my next project. I'm working on making a Jeanie bottle (as in I dream of Jennie).
Make sure you a get license file for it. Also it should be a digital download and no shipping charge.
1st 😁😁
Great work Huw, I just cant slip anything past you LOL
Being a Brit 🇬🇧 I prefer metric
I can understand that. I learned and worked with imperial dimensions. It is what I know. When I watch something that is done in metric I have a little idea what it will be but if not I convert it.
Kind of like when I get a lot of comments not in English so I convert them and respond in the viewers language.
Trust me that is a lot of work.
Because lasers seem to be mostly metric I keep the speed of the laser in metric. Not sure why it is just what I started doing.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good explanation. I have the software, and use it some. Need to use it more! I also have segmented pro which for my purposes seems to be a little easier. You do a great job.
Thank you Albert. I have the Segmented Pro as well. It is pretty much all setup for lots of turnings and you can adjust with it. I very seldom use it as I find the Woodturner Pro better for making adjustments. Both are great pieces of software.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love this video. We've been playing around with this software that's available in our woodchucks club, and our expert is away right now so i was so glad to find this. It'll be a big help. Im sharing it with my friends. Thank you very much
