- One of my favorite things to do is turn a piece of wood that means something to someone. In this case, this was the root ball of a tree that Tuffy Marginez grew up with in his backyard. Finished in shellac.

Thank You Phil... I have not seen that old stump for some time. Brings back memories. For some reason night critters (Racoons?) enjoyed chewing on the trunk which slowly killed it. TONS-OF-FUN slowly watching you turn something I can personally relate to. I am a bit late posting cause I keep re-winding and taking my time. I personally planted that tree when I was younger & still running marathons, wow (my good ole' days?).Thank You Phil and I will be looking forward to all your future turning adventures..... TM
I had an old apple tree I played in for years. Hearing your story made me think of my tree. Thank you for sharing it!
❤❤❤❤
Cool, I didn't know you planted it, too! Did it hurt your feelings to have to dig it up? It would have mine, I think. Well, at least you have revenge on those Racoons! 😀
Tuffy, you have a beautiful bowl to remember that old tree. Phil is a true master! ❤
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop No it didn't hurt my feelings. It was dead and it was going to travel up north for it's second chance at life from your lathe. At the time I had zero idea it would ever make it's way back home again thanks to you Phil....TM
It's not a bowl it's a piece of art!
Thank you, Harry! 😊
Wow that was awesome considering what you started with it ended up Beautiful
Thank you, Colin! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop your welcome
Good morning 🌅, Phil, Not mushroom for error, 😂, when you first showed the face, I thought I could see the shape of a mushroom cap, 🧢, wrong sort of cap he does a bugger, 😂. The funny rippling marks that you were appointed to., I think could’ve been a route from another tree, or some stones a rock, 🪨 😂, as I turned something very similar three or four years ago which was a route and it had similar sort of marks, I know you like to keep the bark on, I think I have been inclined to remove it as you would’ve had more grain figuring under that bark, I seem to recollect that’s what I did to mine, all in all it turned out to be a nice project, stay safe, looking 👀 forward to your next adventure 😂,
From old dude, 😂 France .
Thank you! 😊 For my turnings, I'm always trying to show the original tree, with the bark, contrasted with the beauty of the finished wood. Yeah, it would have had more beautiful grain to show but no contrast. It's just what I like to do, not necessarily the right thing for everyone.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop It was a great 👍🏻 looking 👀 piece of artwork,
Eyup Phil. Well that stump/root ball turned out pretty good. You amaze me sometimes when you see beauty in an old lump of tree. Lovely project sir well done. Hope your well. I start my radiotherapy on 27th August. I'm sure I'll be turning soon. Take care Phil.
Thank you, Kev. 😊 Please take good care and get well, soon!
Im sure i wii be fine Thank you Phil. @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Hi Phil; to me, that looks like a grafted variety, so the muffin top and peculiar grain areas would be from the joint between the rootstock and the grafted scion. Maybe not the most beautiful of bowls, but super interesting.
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Howdy Phil
Such a beauty..... I see a almost full size chicken , on the inside and it is waving !
Place the bowl with that very thin spot / hole on your right .. look to the left , the center is his beak , he is winking with his left eye .... And saying hello with it right when . it is there and I am not drinking LOL
keep on turnin'
Haha, I believe you, Bruce! Tuffy has the bowl so I can't go look! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop To bad .... maybe you can watch your video...when you were finished and showing is when I saw it ...
Hello Bruce. So I got up and brought the bowl back. I'm turning it around exactly as you describe. I see the right eye (& partial left), a long snout pointing to that crack like it's sniffing out what's inside? Kanda looks like a baby Raccoon? Bruce I seriously tried to see a Chicken but all I can see is this weirdo Raccoon. All I drink is water, tea, coffee & creamer (I know I'm boring). HA! Wait, now I see your Chicken with the tip of it's beak pointing to the top of the crack? Ah, maybe BUT that funny little Raccoon is what jumps out at me the most? Oh Well guess I will keep looking? I once saw a dog howling at the moon on Phil's dogwood turning on the inside of the bowl quite a while back but I think I was the only one. It got me going. A dog on a Dogwood turning I thought pretty neat-O but I think I was alone..... TM
@@tuffymartinez I always tell Phil what I first see .....I will have to go back to see the raccoon .
I don't think it's ugly. I like you honored Tuffy.
To me, it looks like a bowl made out of a mushroom. 😉 It's unique and fun.😊
That's a good way to put it, Sunshine, thanks! 😊
another art piece! great job phil.
Thank you, Bennett! 😊
Nice bowl! Interesting piece...
😊
I like it looks pretty cool Phil! 👍 Those spots on the side ya pointed out kinda looks like where maybe a grub worm 🐛 hatched out or something maybe 🤔
Yeah, they definitely look like a grub did them. They were there when I started so just on the outside, that's what confused me. Thanks, Kimsey! 😊
Phil I’m surprised that you think that this masterpiece is ugly. It’s gorgeous! The shape is perfect and the grain and live edge are beautiful. Im sure Tuffy will be proud to display it. Root-balls are always amazing as is your work.
Thank you, Susanne! 😊
So nice to have a bowl from your own tree! We lost our 120-year old pin oak a couple years ago, and a friend turned some bowls for us out of pieces we saved. He did a set of three live-edge nesting bowls, two more live-edge with a bit of dark resin (that tree was really far gone), and one “standard” bowl. We’re so grateful to have those beautiful bowls made from our tree. Losing the tree was heartbreaking, but it was so rotten there was no saving it. I don’t know Tuffy, but if he enjoys his applewood bowl half as much as we love our pin oak bowls, you’ve done a great service to your friend.
ps … ugly? Ummm … no. It’s different from what you usually do, and a bit bulbous, but gosh … it’s beautiful!
Lovely story, Tara. Those are my favorite turnings, too! Thank you! 😊
Cool bowl Phil!
Thank you! 😊
It is not ugly, in spite of what you may think! It is a wonder piece of nature. I just wish I could actually reach out and touch it! Thank you for explaining what you are doing as you go along. As always, I learned a lot.👏
Thank you very much and, you are welcome! 😊
Phil, you are allowed to think it’s ugly if you wish. I, on the other hand, think it’s beautiful. Tuffy is lucky to have such a master turner for a friend. I enjoyed watching this very much! Thanks for sharing! 😃😃
Take care,
…..Gord
Thank you very much, Gord! He has it and says he likes it so, that's a good thing! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, buddy! Thanks for spending some time with me! 😊
I love it! It does look like a mushroom from the side. I also think it looks like a fresh, hot, buttery, dinner roll with it's center pinched out. That's how I always ate my grannies, delicious rolls! 😋
Ummm, buttery dinner rolls. It's been sooo long. Now you've made me hungry, Kristi! 😊
I don’t think it’s ugly at all! That grain inside is incredible
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks, Luie! 😊
Beautiful Phil, no way could that be called ugly! Just wanted to say thanks for being an amazing inspiration to me over the years. Mike
Thank you, Mike! 😊
Ha Phil I like the way you speed up the video dose it cut any smoother sure looks like it from my end. Lmao
Haha, wouldn't that be nice, Michael! Just turn a knob and voila', smooth cutting! 😊
Not ugly at all Phil. It has so much personality!
Personality, yeah, that's the ticket! 😊
Wouldn't say it's ugly. I think you've done a class job on it, definitely put the Phil touch on it. Sure Tuffy will be pleased. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you, Gary! 😊
I spotted an owl sitting on a limb at the bottem! Great piece of art again. I've seen wood on a tree bowl shaped like this but haven't found one to turn. At least now I've seen a result, thank you.
Thank you, Brad! 😊
Phil- That is not an ugly bowl. It's a beautiful piece of craftmanship my friend. I totally enjoyed the journey. Thank you!!
Thank you, John, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊
What a beautiful gift, Phil! Before you began turning the root ball on your lathe, I thought it looked like an elephant…don’t ask…🙄. We loved watching you (as always!) ‘turn’ it into the gem that it is and agreed with you when you thought the finished piece looked like a mushroom cap. Tuffy - you are a lucky guy!
Wow, thank you, Michael! 😊
Those nooks and crannies are the delightful parts of the bowl! Your friend will undoubtedly be more than happy with your results!!
Superfluous!!
Thank you, Colleen! 😀
Nice to see not only FROM Tuffy, but FOR Tuffy. Amazing what you turn out. It was cool how the tree looked like it melted into the root area.
Thank you! 😊
It's pretty because it's so different looking!!! I think you did a wonderful job turning it. At first I couldn't imagine what you would do with it. You came through as always. Take care and have a great weekend. 🥰
Thank you very much, Mary, you too! 😀
Phil I love it! It reminds me of a loaf of bread that swelled out of the pan then collapsed in the middle. It's a beautiful piece of work.
Yes, very much like that, Tom! Thanks! 😀
Phil it is Big, Bold and Beautiful! Tuffy will love it because it looks enough like the tree for those memories.
Wow that finish looks as smooth as glass!
The other thing it save me from heat stroke. I was in the back laying in one of the lounge chairs enjoying the sun when the alert came on my phone that you had your video out.
Good thing because when I went in and looked at the thermometer it said 99!!!!!
See you on the next one buddy!
Gary
Dang, that's hot, Gary! High 80's here and I don't like it one bit! He says he loves it so that's good enough for me. Thanks, Buddy! 😀
It hit 100 after I came in. I guess the paper wasp must like it. There all over the place.
Phil, you finished well. You take a lot of time sanding, and it shows in the end
It's an important step, John, as you know. Thank you! 😊
That root ball was, no doubt, the point at which the rootless apple tree was originally grafted onto the more robust "host" root system. Another fine job, Phil.
😊
I love it. Beautiful and lots of interesting things to look at. When you were using the brush on the inside and talking softly to say right in there and maybe right there, you made me think of Bob Ross.🤗
Interesting, thank you, Nancy! 😊
Hi Phil Grain on the inside is absolutely gorgeous however I am not thrilled with the top. You did want to leave it so Tuffy would recognize it and I believe you
have succeeded. I love the sides and bottom so you have turned out another beauty, I salute you.
Take care Bob
Thank you, Bob! 😊
You could name it "Beauty and the Beast" Great job! Amazing what we can see in a piece of wood that some would let decay.
Thank you very much! 😀
Slow sucks. But root balls are always a surprise if you have the patience. It's beautiful. You have again brought out the natural beauty of the wood. The piece often dictates what it will reveal. I love it! Tuffy seems to as well. Great job!
Along with the bowl, I retrieved the nub and sent that along, too. That's his favorite part! LOL! Thank you, Steve! 😊
A few weeks ago you had a problem with superglue : try salt and vinegar ; sprinkle salt over the glue then apply vinegar. rub fingers back-and-forth for a few minutes your finger should be free . I have not tried this method myself but am told that it works .
Thanks for the tip! 😊
It was an absolute pleasure to spend a 1/2 hour watching you turn an extremely interesting root ball into a magnificent bowl. There are so many stunning features that you have been able to release for our pleasure. You have a rare feeling for the wood you turn, a deep understanding of your craft & a keen eye. I am sure Tuffy will be absolutely delighted with the wonder you have released from this root ball. Great grain too for the eye to enjoy & with a great finish. Thanks, my friend, for the pleasure you bring to SO MANY people. Stay safe & well, Don from South Aust.
He has it and says he likes it, so that was all I could hope for. Thanks for your great comment, Don! 😊
Ugly? Never! Nothing wrong with natural rimmed pieces. This is awesome! I greatly admire your respect for the original plantee of that tree. The inside looks like it's made of marble! A truly amazing work. Thank you for taking us through your thoughts and impressions as you went along -- I appreciate that a lot. Great video!😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Shelley, thank you! 😀
What a good looking piece! I grew up in Ulster county NY and my back yard was a apple orchard. I never knew the wood was so beautiful. You did it justice. Tuffy, I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you, kindly! 😊 Apples aren't just good to eat!
It’s not ugly, just a little chunky! It’s beautiful! Tuffy will love it! Thanks Phil!
He does! Thank you, Brenda! 😊
Well done, Phil. I share your uncertainty about the aesthetics of the piece, but the proof of the pudding is that Tuffy appreciates it.
😊
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder , that bowl is a work of art !! 😎🪵
Thank you, Clarence! 😊
ugly is beautiful Phil. I'd put that on my taonga table any day. Tuffy ought to be honoured.
He says he likes it, John. Thank you! 😊
Hi Phil, Lovely bowl and I'm sure it will take pride of place in Tuffy's home.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks, Huw! He likes it! 😊
Beautiful work, Phil, nice to see what you can make out of a root. Definitely not ugly.
Thank you, Bob! 😊
How amazing for Tuffy to always be able to look at this and bring back memories, I think it is really nice, lots of interesting features, another great turning.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Not bad, it does have character and is not ugly. Beautiful.
😊
The grain and figure in this piece really are quite nice. The shape was dictated by the tree and has some interesting features throughout. Very cool story to go with the piece; it's neat that Tuffy will have this as a memory of the tree in the back yard.
Thanks a lot, Mark! 😊
I think it's absolutely gorgeous ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊
Thank you, Karen! 😊
I dont think it's ugly at all another amazing job. Thanks for taking us along 👍.
You're welcome, thanks for being here, Garet! 😊
Excellent work Phil, as always! A “Punky” that was a “Tuffy” for Tuffy💯🎯 Work of art🏆 Mr. Kris
Thank you so much 😀
Im sure he will love this fine artwork of nature.
He says he does so, Win! 😊
It is definitely different. It will be a great conversation piece. The more I look at it, the more I like it.
Thank you, Jean! 😊
I like that a lot, personality of piece allows you to love it in the long run!
Thank you, Crystal! 😀
Phil
Im not a wood turner I have learned so much from you about turning Phil you are an excellent teacher Thank You
Great to hear! Thank you, Howard! 😊
Nope, not ugly...just beautiful! I know Tuffy will enjoy it!!
He says he likes it so, a win for me! 😊
A very interesting creation, Phil. The grain is gorgeous and the finish, smooth. Thank you, Phil. Thank you, Tuffy.
Many thanks! 😊
Not ugly at all. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship and art. Thank you Phil.
😊
Hey Phil, makes me want to find an apple root ball and have at it. I really like it, sure Tuffy will always treasure it as well. Thanks Phil, see you next week...Dan.
You should! When the neighbor goes on vacation, just dig up his apple tree, get the rootball and replant the tree. He'll never know! 😊
It's kind of clunky on the outside of the rim, but it's not really ugly. If you look at the inside, it's gorgeous. Good job!
True enough, thanks, Carol! 😊
Thank you Phil and tuffy. A truly unique piece Phil. I don’t think there was too much more you could have done with this.
Your finish is as usual fantastic..
Many thanks, Greg! 😊
The grain inside is awesome! You did a great job with it, Phil!
Thanks a lot, my friend! 😊
It looks like a python on a bowl! It's a beautiful beast!
😊
Looks like a loaf of homemade bread with the center eaten out! Yum!
That sounds better than it looks! Pass the butter, please! 😀
Phil.. its not ugly at all. It got its own beauty 😊
OK, thank you, Kim! 😀
You really took on a challenging piece this week Phil ! But than , you are the master of weird bowls that are created out some pretty ugly pieces ! Great job . I think it's a beautiful bowl as far as I am concerned . It is so natural looking . Thanks for sharing this video and we hope you have a great weekend !
Thank you very much, Jon! 😊
CRICKY Phill your WITTY, WISE, AND OTHERWISE,.😅😂🤣🤣 That lump just above the roots, I am pretty sure it's where it was grafted onto the root stock.😲 The grain pattern is impeccable, you carnt go WORNG WITH FRUIT WOOD to turn. Brilliant job Phill. Keep the dream alive son Aussie Aussie Aussie GDAY MATE from brisbane Australia
Interesting! Thank you, Ernie! 😊
Looks like a big larvae made that spot on the side
So beautiful 😊
😊
Pretty bowl, I think. I had to rest after watching you create it. Looked like a lot of work. But well worth it I'm sure!
Thank you, Bob! 😊
Hi Phil, wow that is perfect. you brought the essence out of it perfectly.its nice you cut off the chainsawed bits snd turned it as you did to get to the very heart of what was a naturally occuring in the big chunk of wood.
Thank you, Sangye! You get it! 😊
Good to see you still doing your thing, Phil. If you look at it from the right direction and angle, it looks like heart-shaped. The top opening anyway
I'll have to take another look, John! Tuffy has it now but I can look at the video. Thanks! 😊
wow you made that apple good enough for any teacher what a beautiful job thanks for the video
Thank you, Debra! 😊
Hello Phil, goodness, have you ever before turned a piece of wood that gave you this much of an argument? My first thought upon seeing this was 'oh my, how wonderfully ugly it is. What is Phil going to do with this?'
My mom says that she quite enjoyed seeing you 'pull the beauty out of that piece'.
Many thanks to Tuffy for this and for so many others that he has sent to you. And many. thanks to you for accepting such a challenge and rising to meet it.
Thank you very much, Deirdre and mom! 😊
Hi Phil,
Every so often I want to say " no Phil, don't do that, do this instead........Then I see the finished product. Dang it, he was right again. Nice one, can't wait till next Thursday.
Haha, thank you, Jon! 😀
Nahhhh…not ugly at all….I love it…and I’m sure Tuffy does too…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
He says he does so, yay for me! Thank you, Loraine! 😊
Great job Phil 👏 👍 it does look like a giant mushroom 🍄 😊
😊
Phil, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!! I don't see it as ugly, I think it has a raw beauty that Tuffy will appreciate for the rest of his life. You have captured his youth for him and that is worth more than the looks or the financial value of the piece!!
Excellent work as always, Sir!
Thank you, Phil! 😊
What a unique piece, I love it! That Tuffy tries to do you in with some of his wood!
But I always win! LOL! Thanks, Alan! 😊
Looks very rustic, I think it is very beautiful. Would be proud to display it in my home.
Thank you, Richard! 😊
Wonderful piece. I love the shape and shine. Lovely grain. Not ugly at all.
😊
Good evening, Phil.
This one gave you a challenge. In the end, you won. Tuffy won. We won. Thanks for the video. Excellent project.
Good morning, Ray! 😊 Win, win, win!
You whispered and it listened! Not ugly to me! Looks good!
Thanks Phil!!
Thank you, Kelly! 😊
That certainly different and trust Phil to make something nice out an ugly root ball, well done Phil and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you, Al! 😀
The rippled indentation looks like a large grub lived there. Great job 👏
I thought about that but, I think it was there before I started so he only ate on the outside! 😀
Gravensteins are my favorite apples.
😊
That is an awesome piece. Really enjoy watching you go through how odd lumber can be turned in to great functional pieces. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
I appreciate that, thank you! 😊
Another ugly beautiful piece Phil. The colors and grain are gorgeous.
Your turnings are always stunning when complete.
Thanks for sharing Phil.
Thank you, Carl! 😊
Love the difference grain on the inside and all the incursions on the outside. When you said it looked like a mushroom at that moment I was thinking the same thing.
Cool! Thanks, Russ! 😀
It is not ugly! The natural grain is stunning.
😊
Well, the grain is really nice and it has a lot of character.
I see you are a glass half-full person, Cecilia. I love that, thanks! 😊
Not ugly! Mushroom with a view! Wouldn’t mind having a bunch of root balls to work with. 😊
Yeah, they can be a lot of fun, Jonny! 😀
I’m glad you didn’t change what is piece is. It still has its “roots” 😀. The finish is beautiful. This is a nice bowl. I hope it makes its way to the back to the boy who grew up with it.
Thanks for the show.
Joel
He had it in his possession a couple hours before the video went live. I asked him to wait to open it until he watched the video and he did! 😊
The before and afters are amazing, you did that piece justice, so much character and beautiful grain and colour.... Nice work brother Phil 👊🏽
😀
Looks great. Now to create something from the offcuts. 😃
Yes, maybe one of them. I was looking them over, Anthony. 😊
It came out great. I kept seeing the spot on the outside when you were spinning it by hand I kept thinking it looks cool and was trying to figure out what it was and then you said you weren't sure what it was. The different grains made it look amazing. Thanks again Phil for sharing with your RUclips family.
I'm glad you like it, Doug, thank you! 😊
If I were Tuffy, I'd love it. Rootballs are always a surprise. Thanks
He says he does, so, I guess there's no accounting for taste! LOL! Thanks, Garth! 😀
Really great turn Phil! Very impressed with how you pulled this one off from concept to finish!
Glad you enjoyed it, Tony, thank you! 😊
Recognize-a-bowl! I really love the grain inside.
😀
Beauty is not limited to symmetry. Beauty is also found in uniqueness and even flaws. You are willing to make a serious effort to work with a piece and let it speak for it's self. I believe you have done exactly that. It is natural beauty shining proudly. If Tuffy doesn't want this piece, I would be delighted to take it off his hands. 💗💖
Thank you so much, Vicki! 😊
