Why Is Tales From The Crypt Stuck On DVD?

- In 1989, an HBO horror anthology series took the genre by storm. Its chilling intro, featuring a journey through a decrepit mansion filled with horrors, left a lasting impression. The Crypt Keeper's devilish laugh and eerie atmosphere haunted my nights. Today, we delve into why this amazing series lacks a Blu-ray remaster and when we can expect one - a journey not as simple as it seems.

DVDs are not obsolete! It’s thriving in the horror collecting community! 💀
He, he he! By the 2030"s........ It won't matter anymore!
@@jaybruno3571 not in my world
🤙🏼💯🔥
I still collect DVDs, along with blu rays. I have movies that are out of print and not streaming. Worth it to me.
Not just the horror community, there are even massive blockbusters that aren't available on BD like True Lies.
I think the quality of the DVD works in its favour as it adds to the dark, gritty 'I shouldn't be watching this' vibe.
Exactly. I want the nostalgia that goes along with the way these features were shot at the time. As a collector, I'm not a fan of everything looking like a live action soap opera. I would watch a VHS if I still had a VCR.
I fully agree. It doesn't need to be hi def and also I play my DVDs in my Blu-ray, DVDs aren't that obsolete it's not like when we went from VHS to DVDs and needed different equipment to play them. I bought the seasons of Tales From the Crypt from Amazon as the seasons released and they have been played Soooooo much over that time.
I want a Blu-ray release for people to be able to own it and especially if it included cool features like a retrospect or documentary but I'm not too upset it doesn't exist. I would be interested in a reboot with new stories though but I don't know if they'd capture the magic of the original show.
If you like that you'll love the shitty conversions someone put up on Piratebay that I grabbed years and years ago.
1080p just looks closer to film, it's supposed to look like it would in a movie theater.
Live action soap opera? There's only one kind, and that's from 60fps, and motion interpolation.
I'm assuming Tales from the crypt was shot on 16mm film, so imagine The Walking Dead, Evil Dead 1 or "The Shield" if you want to know what it would look like in HD...just as gritty.@@venod3134
Plus the dozens of hours of bonus features
The episode with Morton Downey Jr investigating a haunted house through tabloid show was a personal favorite.
Mine too. The moral of a story was don't mess with ghosts and haunted houses
Television terror is also my favorite
Great episode
Perfectly cast role, that guy was such a professional asshole in the 80s :)
I was literally going to say the same thing that was always my personal favorite it was actually honest to God fear
"Are there even any more DVD players that you can buy?" Yes. Every single Blu Ray player. If you get a good one, like a high end Panasonic, it does a decent job at upscaling the footage to HD. A lot of my DVDs are pretty decent watched on my 4k TV. But I get your point. It would be far better to have a native HD copy.
I was really surprised by his take on DVD and players. A lot of the horror community still watches films on VHS.
@@tommyfraz. Me too. A lot of my collection will never see an HD release, due to the episodes being edited on video. e.g. the 80's Twilight Zone, Tales From The Darkside, Monsters, Friday the 13th: The Series, to name a few.
It was kind of a lousy take. Would it be great to have a remaster? Absolutely but until then I am grateful to have the DVDs. And guess what no matter how well the remaster will be the stories are the same!
That was such a weird question. Like you can play DVDs on devices other than DVD players, how do they not know this?
@@Metsfan1975Blu Ray bonus features are barebones at best, usually a trailer and the commentary of a couple actors. Whereas, DVD bonus menus are chalked with dozens of hours of documentaries, making ofs, deleted scenes, contest, to name a few.
Honestly, some blu ray players have a good up scaling function for DVDs. It may not look the absolute best, but it’s not going to be like watching a VHS.
Plus, all BD players can play DVDs.
Vhs is better, doesn't skip lol
Thank you! I’ve always wondered why this show isn’t streaming anywhere! Not even on HBO Max!!! It’s insane!
Pretty much every episode is here on RUclips… (it was last year) they were all here. Not edited. Hopefully, they still are
@@AnnieBoBannie421 Glamster's Crypt baby lol.
It has complicated rights.
I hope the narrator and/or writer realize that finding something to play a DVD is extremely easy, as all Blu Ray and 4K players also play DVD. Most 4K players even upscale the quality as much as the constraints of DVD will allow
Yeah, I don't understand his comments there or how he kinda rips the medium. Would he prefer they be lost media instead? I mean I appreciate they are at least available whether it's VHS, dvd, Blu-ray, laser disc, etc
can't believe they also kiddified it w/ the animated version. 😂 I loved the 90s. I really should get around to getting those DVDs
You're too late, by about a decade. 😂 They're OOP and pretty expensive now. At least in US. There are some in Spain available, but on less amount of discs, so compressed even further.
As a kid of that time, I watched both. Lol.
@@tecpaocelotl I remember my parents would let me watch the crypt keeper scenes but not the rest of the show
Why can't you believe it? It was typical american to turn r-rated stuff into "kid friendly" crap, so they can sell toys and other merchandise. Happened with Rambo, Robocop, Conan, Highlander heck, even the Toxic Avenger and compared to that, even the real life Tales from the Crypt show is very tame already.
@@ShadowAngel606 it was a great time wasn’t it
I own the DVD box set. A Blu-ray would be great, but I'd rather have the DVDs than nothing at all. Other 90's shows like The Wonder Years, My So Called Life, Eerie Indiana, Saved by the Bell, got the DVDs, etc. I've just accepted the fact that these will likely not get a Blu-ray, if they do it'll be a nice surprise lol.
Meanwhile, the RUclips channel “
Crypt Tube Incorpserated has uploaded all the episodes in HD4k. They look great. I know it’s not a blu-ray, but at this rate, it’s probably all we’re gonna have for a long time
@@Dhampir101980 Good to know.
Sadly most shows won't get Blu Ray updates. These days companies want you to view content on their streaming platforms, so a lot of shows are not getting physical releases. Just have to be happy with at least getting DVD releases for older shows.
@@Chaoitcme We got lucky with some show. I've own things like Quantum Leap, The Twilight Zone, Batman, Freaks & Geeks, on Blu-ray. But most of my shows are on DVD and will probably stay that way.
It doesn't matter if there's no Blu-ray of it, it wouldn't look much better than the DVD anyway when that is played on a good Blu-ray player that 'HD' upscales the image it looks pretty damn fine enough.
This show is what introduced me to anthologies. Glad I still at least have my DVD's
Are you aware that they might rust?
@@michaelsimpson208 The DVD's rust? I have never had that happen to any DVD that I've owned
It’s been claimed multiple times over the years that the original film source elements no longer exist (HBO carelessly discarded them in the 90’s) which could prove to be difficult for a 4K remaster. Yes while there are fan made 4K upscales on YT that are pretty decent, but that’s also as good as it can get with a legit studio 4K or even bluray for this particular property. There’s also the rights nightmare with so many actors, writers, directors, producers involved that it makes me grateful we got the full series on dvd when we did. Especially considering how the quality (physical and content) dipped significantly with each subsequent set due to the sales, we were lucky to get all the seasons as it was obvious they began to cut costs in order to get the whole series out on dvd. Some shows would often be released on dvd/bluray and then remaining seasons canceled due to poor sales.
The best TV show ever. How much does this show mean to both my wife and I? The officiant for our wedding was the voice of the Cryptkeeper, John Kassir
That's dope!
He really does seem like a nice person. Although even the cartoon didn't endear me to being less terrified. Not even on network TV.
All 7 seasons were available on bluray in limited Mediabooks here in Germany 6 years ago.
Still available on ebay from 90€ up.
Thankfully, I picked up all the DVDs through the Edward McKay used book and media store and kept them into my own personal Crypt.
Ummm, whose bluray player doesn't ALSO play DVDs as a basic feature? That whole complaint sounded ridiculously uninformed
I own the dvds and have actually been doing a full rewatch the last few months. Boy do the transfers look like traaaaaaash. A nice, cleaned up Blu-ray would be nice.
DVDs work in a Blu-ray player. And also work in a 4K player. I'm surprised you don't know this. 🤷
Yeah I know that was an embarrassing take from someone that grew up with the technology
A few years ago, NECA said they reached out to the rights holder about doing Crypt Keeper figures but did not get a response.
I'm still missing seasons 6 and 7. I don't mind watching DVDs but some of these old shows just get downright expensive, assuming you can even find them.
I'm missing the whole series, it has never been released on dvd here in the UK.
When I Was Younger I Didn't Have HBO I Didn't Get Cable Until 1995/96 At The Time. And When Fox Aired Tales From The Crypt Around That Time I Was So Excited. And I Also They Aired It Again On FearNet A Few Decades Later Now That i have All Seven Seasons Of TFTC On DVD It's Horror Nostalgia At It's Finest. It Would Make Me Smile If We Get A Reboot Of The Series But At Least We Still Have Creepshow.
This show was so influential to my childhood! It's one of the main reasons I am the way I am 😂
I'm fine with not having Tales From The Crypt reboot because I feel like the Creepshow TV series is a good spiritual successor. I only hope we get a blu-ray box set some day.
Top 3 tales from the crypt episodes for me were all through the house, dig that cat... he's real gone and the switch. The show was awesome!
I got all seven seasons of tales from the crypt on DVD 📀 and I like to see it on blu-ray. 😀👍
I keep looking through the comments and seeing people talk about how terrifying the crypt keeper was. I was never terrified. He wasn't pleasant looking of course, but he never scared me. Still though, I tuned-in for this show every week. One of the best shows of the 90s.
Those people are slow. They think fictional movies and shows are real. Probably watch Wrestling and think it's real. 🤣🤣
As a general fan of physical media, mainly on the music side, the silly question of "Where can you even buy a DVD player these days?" that you utter is answered in your own wish for a blu-ray edition. That's because it's not uncommon knowledge that blu-ray players also play DVDs, and CDs for that matter. Crypt as a series was ok, I have all the "obsolete" DVDs, but couldn't tell you when the last time was that I watched them. Maybe I'm just outgrowing this stuff in my old age. I recently started watching one of my Tales From The Darkside DVDs and got bored after a couple of episodes.
I Still Remember that Intro... I was scared as a little child
I got all seven seasons on my prime account. I purchased them a while ago when they were available to buy.
Got seasons 2-6 on iTunes 👍
Stop acting like DVD is total and utter trash and unwatchable. Is it 4k? No. But that does not mean it is unwatchable. This is an amazing show and should be watched. It is a whos who of the time. Buy the dvd set you will not be disappointed.
As a child (7-10trs old), I was TERRIFIED of the Crypt Keeper. Literally the subject of all my childhood nightmares BUT... I loved the rest of the show! My parents would tape the episodes and edit out the Crypt Keeper parts for me
That is so cute 😂❤
How were you scared of a fake character on a tv show? Were you slow? 🤣🤣
@@ebogar42 no... I was a child
I was a child then too. I was probably about 7 when this came out. I didn't get scared of stuff like that though because I knew it wasn't real. My son had a hard time comprehending it was fake though. I couldn't let him watch scary stuff. I don't get why some kids can't comprehend it's fake. @@phatnana2379
Its crazy that one of the most popular horror series that fans are begging to pay money for can't get a re-release because of all the legal stuff. This show is basically what got me into horror as a kid. Something about staying up late to catch it on HBO was just a whole vibe in the 90s.
Whats the song at the end??
One of my earliest horror memories is watching this as a kid and leaping into my dad's arms when the Crypt Keeper popped out of his coffin. I eventually got used to the scare and watching this with my dad became a regular event, leading to a selection of memories I will cherish for the rest of my days.
I know the focus on this is on the tv show, but saying EC comics got 'ostracized from the public" is putting it mildly.
Basically a book came out blaming juvenile delinquency on comic books, especially EC comics.
McCarthyism era congressional hearings were held on possibly the government censoring comics.
Comics publishers said they'd censor themselves, forming the Comics Code Authority of America.
IIRC the original person as the head of the code had some very strong government connections too.
The CCAoA sets up rules that are very much aimed against EC comics. Right down to rules like "you can't use Crypt or Horror in the title of your comic"
EC did try to adapt, focusing more on their sci-fi comics, but when they pubished an anti-segregation story called "Judgement Day" in 1955 (pre-Rosa Parks) the CCA literally told them they couldn't have a big reveal at the end of the comic that the protagonist was a black man.
EC comics stopped making comics, but William Gaines did find more success in magazines. MAD Magazine in particular.
But yeah, if you've ever wondered why from 1954 comics were so constrained.
Single issue stories, very pro government, even Batman basically being deputized as an officer and all?
It's all because the CCA pretty much demanded those things.
Comics "weren't poltiical" back in the day because they were heavily censored.
Marvel stopped submitting to the CCA in 2001, DC & even Archie comics did the same in 2011, which pretty much killed it.
I loved this show growing up. It was so dark and twisted. I will always love the christmas cd they put out with songs like "Juggle Bills" and "Deck the halls with parts of Charlie".
If nothing else, they could at least give us the show on SDBD with proper chapter stops, intros on every episode, etc. However, from my understanding, the rights issues are with the ability to make a new show if they wanted to use the Kassir Crypt Keeper. WB owns the HBO show for video distribution though, so they can release it on any format they want. The problem is getting WB to fork over the money to remaster the show. Maybe some day someone like Shout! Factory will save us and license it from them and do their own remaster.
You mentioned the potential rights issue regarding EC comics, but I'm wondering if there's also other licensing issues like music used in the series, because that has stalled the progress of many series releases over the years.
Also, what format is the original show stored in? They might have filmed most of it and edited on tape, which can make remastering a lot more expensive. If the film doesn't exist anymore, the tape would almost definitely not be HD quality. It could pretty much be confined to lo-fi.
"Are there even any more dvd players you can buy..." dude seriously? Even in my little college town I could go to Best Buy right now and get a dvd-specific player, not to mention the obvious: blu-ray players including 4k will also play DVDs. We all know 'higher resolution is better when it's better' but we are currently experiencing a crisis of availability for physical media, and it's really a lousy time to add fuel to that fire with comments like "Who would want to watch a DVD anyway..." when everything you're saying otherwise points to 'this will never come out on blu-ray and maybe not even streaming'.
Not sure why people fondly remember the Chiller channel, it was censored beyond Disney levels.
I'm still surprised this isn't available to stream on MAX (some episodes are on RUclips thankfully).
Actually going to a zenith box tv makes tons of damn sense if you wanna play Super Nintendo and Sega without lag or ugly stretching. In fact, these old DVDs watched on that TV would still look great by hiding the blemishes revealed trying to blow up DVD quality nowadays.
You don't compare tales from the crypt too tales from the dark side tales tftc is a better show even if some episodes are not that good tftc deserve s a Blu rays realese it's was a good show .
This and the reboot we never got since 10+ years ago what with Tales of the crypt with this technical difficulties on this property i still what at on Blu-ray im getting the DVD box set if i can i can find it at my local Goodwill and enjoy this series on this box until i get old great video joblo i want to see this show on Blu-ray and also Happy 35th anniversary to Tales of the crypt thank you for this video.
Oh shit, I'm totally gonna look for those DVDs, sounds like a binge night will be pretty badass
Even though we're not gonna be getting a remastered blu-ray set of Tales of the Crypt series. I still got my original DVD set Vol.1-7.
I would love to see TFTC streaming but I own all the seasons so at least I can watch it anytime.
I bought the complete series box years ago but never opened it, on Halloween I finally did and it was nostalgic af lol, I’m only through the first 2 discs but I’m gonna make it part of my Halloween every time now. Did y’all ever see TALES FROM THE HOOD, I watch that every year too.
I just had to order the boxset! Thank you!
I still remember stopping at a Big Lots! in Medford Oregon on the drive down to San Diego Comic Con 2009. They had nearly every season of Tales from the Crypt on DVD $2.99. I filled my trunk.
Aww, 89 was the year I entered the world😢 damn I'm getting old.
I was born in '88. Sit down, you young whippersnapper.
It's not stuck on DVD. The show is available on Blu-ray in Germany: "Geschichten aus der Gruft - Die Komplette Serie". 93 episodes on 7 discs.
Ya, I was a bit confused, I had to look at my box set. I was positive it was blu ray.
This needs to be on HBO max😊
This just reminds me of why we will never get that tv series WEREWOLF on a dvd or blue ray release, too much legality. If they know the fans want it, why not re-release it? They will still make a profit.
That was a great show, like the old “The Incredible Hulk” show but with a Werewolf(Janus Skorzenee used to creep me out👁️😄)… I bought a boxed ripped&mastered DVD set on eBay years ago (back when people sold EVERYTHING on there)and it still works-I’ve been waiting years for an actual DVD release🙁 Thankfully, “Tales from the Crypt” was available on DVD, still one of my favorite old horror anthology shows and holds up well😊
It's a favorite, thanks for the insight, glad I own the DVD collection.
My Brother's Keeper is my favorite episode that i can remember off the top of my head. They did so good at giving me the feeling of claustrophobia and that need to get free
If creepshow can comeback then why not tales from the crypt and tales from the darkside as well as monsters? We need a revival of these shows
I still collect DVDs and watch all the time. I've never felt the need for super duper even betterer hi deff. Maybe because I grew up on grainy broadcast TV and VHS. DVD's still seem clear enough for me. I don't stream, I like owning what I pay for on physical media.
one of my all-time fave shows 🤘
Dvds are still awesome just yesterday I got "my cousin Vinnie" for 20 cents and "drag me to hell " for 15
Christmas episode is my favorite too, the two versions, the OG of Joan Collins is really good too. Tales from the crypt is a classic, even on Tiny Toons there was a parody as a Halloween special. Guess Creepshow was easier to revive, lol.
All current consoles play DVDs, and the previous generation as well, so getting a dvd player isn't difficult.😁
Rights issues definitely, it's why when Spirit Halloween did a Cryptkeeper halloween prop they used an existing animatronic Cryptkeeper from Spencer's Gifts and didn't give it Kassir's voice.
The intro was all miniature until they got to the crypt keeper . I love practical effects.
I still watch my dvds all the time 🤘 i didn't realize quite how out of touch i was..but that's not unusual. Manythnx JoBlo
Tales from the Crypt did have one of best tv openings in tv history in my opinion and I believe it would have not been as affective if it wasn’t for that awesome theme.
There actually is a Blu-ray of TFTC in Germany but it's still only standard definition; a very common practice in Europe because you can basically fit an entire SD season on one disc.
Well, i'm not an HD snob so i'm perfectly fine with the very old and "obsolete" DVDs of TFTC that i own. Both my regular Blu-ray and my 4K UHD players can play DVDs and they look just fine to me. I could understand the complaint a lot better if the show had only ever been released on VHS, which is a truly obsolete format that many horror buffs still collect and watch today for nostalgia's sake, but DVD is still a pretty popular video format (whether all of the DVD haters out there will admit it or not) and older t.v. shows like TFTC look perfectly fine on it to me. Would a Blu-ray and/or 4K release be nice? Of course but it's not something that i absolutely require to happen in order to die a happy person. But, as i stated earlier, i'm not a spoiled HD snob like a lot of people are these days.
The rights are in limbo
I am really happy they did not let Shyamalan touch it though. He would not have been a good choice. They need someone who would get the comedy and campy side. Seth Rogen , Kevin Smith, and Eli Roth would be my choices All three together would be pretty awesome.
This show never got a dvd release in the UK. Some episodes were released on vhs back in the 90s but that's it. I think there is a Spanish R2 release but it's usually quite expensive.
Is bluray going to be a better experience though? While it is nice to see older shows in HD, they are different than movies in that they were specifically made for standard def tvs. HD might expose some makeup effects, etc and actually make the show a little less enjoyable.
I just bought the series on dvd on eBay!!! I watched this as a kid and loved it!!!
These rights calamities could be avoided if they were addressed at the beginning of the series run in contract negotiations.
I dunno man. I love my tales from the crypt dvds. I feel like the super, super crisp definition of Blu-ray starts to reveal some of the flaws of the dated practical effects in certain older features.
Why haven't we got a goosebumps complete series box?
The UK had a complete series box set of Goosebumps some years back but Tales From The Crypt has never had a UK dvd release for some reason.
@@gyobfan22 Yeah I have the first release they did in the UK and I have a region free player and the transfer for it is okay I just need an US Blu-ray box set
I was just asking this the other day. I have the 20 year old DVDs. I'd buy a blu ray update immediately.
I'm more offended that tales from the crypt isn't available on HBO max. Good video. Love thus franchise
I think shitting on dvd is a bit unfair tnh. It’s not like the dvd transfer is poor or the series is incomplete as so many other boxsets are even today. Hell, even series like the 90s Xmen have several episodes removed from disney+ because they would be unacceptable by today’s standards and TFTC would fall victim to that just as easily. I’ll stick with my dvd set.
Much to my shock, I’m buying DVDs again to get these TV shows and movies that just aren’t available in any other format or even streaming.
Does... does the narrator not realize that DVDs play in modern day blu-ray and 4K players?
No the narrator does not realize that. An adult in their 30s or 40s doesn’t know this somehow
Shyamalan was set to helm a new Crypt series. There is even a trailer. The comments in that video are all people saying to keep Shyamalan far away from the franchise and don't let him anywhere near Tales From the Crypt.
I don't mind them being only on DVD, I don't actually want the stuff I grew up with in BR quality for the most part, I want it as fuzzy as I remember (or at least close to it, ideally they'd be on VHS with a CRT TV, lol). But I will say that it really needs a better definitive release since the DVDs are pretty bare, and I'd absolutely buy a BR box set if it ever happens.
I remember it was July 2005 that S1 dropped, then October 2005 was S2, and I think April 2006 S3…..how is that 18 years ago?!?!
My wife got me the complete series collection on DVD this Christmas. She was telling me she could not figure out why their is no Bluray. Honestly I love the resolution of the DVD. it reminds me of watching the series as a kid when it was originally on and I think a high definition conversion would actually hurt the series by removing the grittiness that makes up it's charm.
My bluray player, does a little bit of upscaling. I still pop in DVDs from timw to time, and they arent unwatchable. I do have all 7 seasons of TFTC on DVD. Which is okay w/ me for the time being.
My problem was how season 1 did not include the intro on each episode and how only a few of the seasons had proper chapter stops.
Was too young to watch these as a kid, now as a collector I wonder if I should buy the DVDs as it sounds like I’ll never get a set of 4K is a blue rays
I used to be definitely scared of him when he came on the screen at the end of the intro.
Like all TV at that time, the show was edited on videotape. An HD transfer would be difficult and costly, that's why it hasn't happened. If it was cheap and easy, the rights would have been sorted out long ago.
The Crypt Keeper has a great run. Now would be the perfect time to work on either the Vault of Horror or Haunt of Fear series. Worry about bringing Tales from the Crypt coming to BD later!!!
BD players play DVD and upscales it, duh
Most blu ray players also support dvds as well. No need for a dedicated DVD player
glad i have my dvds!!!
In the UK it doesnt even have a DVD release
I wish they would remaster this and Freddy’s Nightmares. You can at least find some episodes of Tales online but Nightmares is almost impossible these days. I’d love to see one of my favorite Tales episodes (Til Death) in full HD some day.
I know Tubi at one point had Freddy’s nightmare
I looked forward to the new series so much, I hope it will eventually still happen. In the mean time, we have the next best thing: the Creepshow series on shudder /paramount + depending on where you are.
It was like 2006 when Big lots was selling seasons for ~$5 or so.
That's how I watch it still today.
My ultimate favorite episode is definitely And All Through the House, the Christmas episode Paul Bookstaber mentioned early on in the video.
used to watch this as a kid first by being sneaky later with my parents always as nightmare fuel before bed haha
We need this show on Netflix and remastered!
Death of Some Salesman, episode with Tim Curry. Terrifying🤘
U can find some of the series on YT
I’ve bought 5-6 DVD boxed sets in the last couple months. I’ve got a Sony BluRay player that upscales DVD’s. I’m fine with owning Tales from the Crypt on DVD. At least I can watch it whenever I want.
