    • @TheCheezeQueen
      @TheCheezeQueen 5 лет назад +322

      @@abendrot___8055 The acrylic paint will be unable to stick to the oil paint, so it will flake off. This can sometimes happen very quickly, almost as soon as the acrylics dry, or sometimes it can take weeks. In any case, the acrylic will definitely flake off at some point.

    • @claudward6529
      @claudward6529 5 лет назад +55

      That really only applies to paint in process or recently painted mediums. If the oil paint is completely dried, in this case many years /decades old, it won’t matter about adding an acrylic medium over the top of oil. The theory of “fat over lean” still applies to any new paint but the ancient archival stuff has long lost any liquid/oil component over time

    • @claudward6529
      @claudward6529 5 лет назад +27

      KawaiiKaptian that’s not exactly the reason . Oil takes much longer to dry and if you paint over the top of oil with either acrylic or less dilute oil paint you’ll end up with that distinctive crazing /crackling that you often see in novice oil paint artists work. Remember the “fat over lean” principle - basically always put the quicker drying /less oil saturated layers beneath thicker oilier layers and you’ll be ok

      But you know one day , the oil will run out . At least that is what the peak oil theory states . I believe that oil keeps gushing from underneath the earth . Because we have capped well that ran dry and 3 years later oil is in the hole once again in abundance 🙌🏻 so where does the oil come from ?

      On one hand, yes, be careful and have respect for what you’re painting on. On the other, I’ve seen paintings sans skill or care go for 200-1200 at art swaps bc the buyers didn’t know what they were buying. Besides that, art is a good and a service and you pay for both, so value doesn’t necessarily reflect the value of the piece itself, and beside ALL of that, 130 dollars is the price of an amateur piece generally, so you would’ve been fine painting over it

      Ghoul Pen I think why some people werent happy with this video is because they wanted her to do something more respectful with the paintings and forgot about the part where they were abandoned and was probably gonna get thrown in the garbage, if she didnt pick them up. On the other hand if you totally destroyed a persons work for your own and others entertainment, disregarding the artist’s hard work, that would be totally disrespectful.
      Kasey REDESIGNED the art, if she didn’t it might have been thrown away.

    Adding belated love to this video. This was the first video of yours I ever saw and I didn’t like it at the time because I had very narrow expectations of what I thought you should do with a thrifted painting.
    BUT you had so much fun with it and were so pleased with the results, PLUS it matched your existing art style, so I knew that no disrespect was intended, so I wasn’t one of the people who left a mean comment. I make an effort not to leave mean comments on anyone’s videos but in this case I didn’t want to taint your obvious joy. It makes me sad that so many people were mean about it that it made you cry because I think back to that video pretty often when I’m watching your latest videos and compare my initial reaction to how I feel about it now.
    Seven years of watching your videos has inspired me to be less precious with my own artwork and to embrace the silliness inherent in creating. I mentally credit you when I look a lot of the silliest things I’ve ever made because I don’t know if I would have ever made them without remembering you calling your own work “silly” and meaning it as a compliment.
    And when I saw the title of your newest video, my initial reaction was excitement because my attitude toward this video has changed so much throughout the years.
    All that to say what I’m sure you already know, people’s reactions to you are more about them than about you. Keep doing you. ❤

    As someone who works in an op shop (Australian version of a thrift store) I can say that paintings that aren't sold will be destroyed after a certain amount of time on the floor. Kasey made sure these didn't get thrown away and possibly extended their "life" expectancy. She did a good.
    Edit: I’m an artist as well and if someone had brought a piece of my work and drawn over it I wouldn’t care. It’s like a collaboration between two artists. The art isn’t entirely Kasey’s and it’s not entirely the original artist’s either. Kasey didn’t defame the person she merely gave it a face lift.

You have to come to peace with things and someone continuing and transforming my art after I'm dead is honestly a nice way to pay tribute to myself. I gave it away because I expected it to be handled decently. It just gives off a vibe of: your art isn't special enough since it was just lying around so I took it and made my own thing out of it.

    I think the only reason why people are upset over this is because she's most likely making money ( Probably more money then the person who made those paintings got ) by using a painting that she didn't make herself, by painting over it. She even acknowledges this. ( the title of the video )
    Now if she re-created the entire painting by her own means and then added the cartoony stuff to that, it would be well more received. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    Also, you can have passion and love art and painting and might even be doing it for fun; but let's be honest here... Usually when you spend hours and hours on a hobby like this, it is your main income. Otherwise where would you get the time to paint or draw in the first place? Especially if you work full time.
    And yes, it is very sad how many of these kinds of paintings get thrown out. :(
    On that note, I find this really sad and amusing because little kids draw over peoples art all the time online without making money off of them, and everyone gives them shit; and before you say that the little kid didn't pay for it or w/e, did the little kid draw over the original physical copy? Oh which reminds me... Buying a painting is not the same thing as buying the copyright for the painting, she can be sued big time if the original artist found out she was making money off of their work on youtube. So that's kind of....a thing.

    • @zeefaaldown3231
      @zeefaaldown3231 5 лет назад +10

      I feel the same, and it seems everyone assumes that the artist wouldn't mind, because THEY wouldn't mind. We are not the original artists, we don't know how they would feel, happy or upset. I don't get the impression she really tried to go out of her way to make sure this was approached a little more respectfully. Maybe if she made a separate copy and painted on that instead of going over the original it would be better. I'm not trying to give her a hard time since I'm sure it was just over looked, but I wish she practiced more concern. This video is a little disappointing. 😅

      I think that's the main issue that makes this kind of questionable and uncomfortable
      Instead of just doing digital art over the scans as an exercise she permanently altered other people's original and one-of-a-kind works (some might say defacing them) for the purpose of a monetized video on a huge RUclips channel.

An artist takes a long time to make something beautiful, especially when it comes to paint and so it just feels a little disrespectful to me that she painted over the original artworks...could she not have made a copy and painted over them. BTW that Barrister painting could have been sold for quite a bit of money. Always check if something is an original and has some resale worth before painting over it.

    My grandma has been painting 'bob ross style' before he was even born man. I love her paintings, they're so intricate and beautiful I could never. It's a little scary to see someone painting on original art, I just know how many weeks my grandma puts into her paintings and she would be so sad to see someone doing this to her work. Then again my family would never let her paintings end up at a second hand shop but it's a little sad to think that somebodies legacy could be dumped at a thrift store by uncaring relatives or strangers if they pass away and have no family to take there belongings. My grandmas paintings are so special to her, if she ever passed away our whole family would probably divide up her paintings to keep to remember her by because she put so much time and love and effort into each one.
    I love your channel and I absolutely understand that everyone views art differently and just because my family views art like a part of ourselves doesn't mean everyone else does and I did love your additions to the paintings they are very cute. These were in charity shops, so they weren’t worth much, and they aren’t one of a kind. It’s scary at first, but these over paintings aren’t all that bad. What you should actually be worrying about is ancient murals being ruined by untrained artists paid to “fix” them or being graffitied. This was making the most of art that would be easily discarded.

    A lot of comments are upset by this... but:
    1) It's possible it's not the original, so it doesn't matter.
    2) If they ARE originals, why are they in thrift shops? If the artist or the artist's family didn't keep them, or sell them to something more than the equivalent of a Goodwill, it's not worth that much (and even if they were, money isn't everything, sheesh!), and they certainly don't care that much about it.
    My grandma was an artist. She died four years ago, and I have all of her pieces still to this day. The thought of taking them to the thrift store *in the first place* is more disrespectful than somebody buying them there and painting on top of it. I would never take my grandmother's pieces to the thrift store, and if that's how some of those pieces ended up there, I'd be more mad at my family who donated them there, than at the person who bought them to do as they wish.
    This is also a MUCH better use of the paintings, considering if (some) thrift stores get too many donated than they can sell, they will end up in the trash anyways! Y'all need to calm down.

Not many people on the internet have liked them but my husband loves them and loves having them up in our house. An issue you might have later is that you used acrylic over (most likely) oils and varnish. Oils and acrylics don't often mix. I haven't done it so I'm not sure if it will peel eventually or if something else happens. It's just one of those, "oh hey, these things don't work," type of advice from whatever classes I've taken.

(I queried it with my tutor, I'm a mature student and still have issues understanding copyright etc and all the terminology) Oliver Jeffers does it in large scale paintings and as some of his illustrations in his books. I saw some of his large painting 'collaborations' in London recently and he signs his name alongside the original artist which I thought was a lovely way to honour the original art and now the new one it had become. I feel like I should mention, since you spoke about being new to acrylic and oil paint- that the two more realistic landscape paintings, look to me, like they were made with oil paint. The issue with this is acrylic paint can't go over oil. It may last years, but after a certain amount of time, it will start to peel. This is because it is water-based vs something oil-based. You can put oil paint over dried acrylic because it is fatter, "fat over lean" as they say, but not the other way around. I hope the original paintings were acrylic though! And if you already knew this- sorry to bring it up! I just felt it may be good to know. I only know about this from spending two years studying painting in college. Awesome idea and the paintings look great!

    Tip for acrylics!! There are these things you can buy to keep your paint fresh for MONTHS. It’s called the Sta-Wet palette. It’s basically a tupperware container with a wet sponge in the bottom and palette paper on top, and because of the wet sponge, your paints dont dry out when you arent using them. Its so useful for when you want to put down a painting for a while, but don’t want to remix your colors. Plus you waste so much less paint because you can use the paints so many times! I really recommend it!!

    This a really creative idea, i like the last two. The first ones idea is also good.... but it bothers me that you covered up what, in my opinion, is the grab of the painting with the two gorgeous trees on the left. You easily couldve executed your idea by maybe sliding the giant ghost more in the center, as well as maybe a bit smaller.
    Its not a big deal... it just personally bothers me (...a lot...)
    However I really enjoy this idea, and the thrift store by me has a handful of copies of the same painting, and i might try this myself.

    If i enjoy the piece i photograph it before selling. Thats my way of keeping it as i wanted. After that its up to the new owner. Ive had commissioners get inked pieces from me and later ask if they could try coloring themselves... Why would i stop them? They bought it, its there art now. All i require is that they dont take credit for the original. 🤔

If you sell your artwork you are consenting that the new owner of the piece can burn it, paint over it, or leave it in their attic collecting dust. Really anything, plus it's probably been a while, and the original artist was or is much better now and doesn't care about some person ruining their work. Like old work you probably think is bad. So I wouldn't be sad about what she did, the original artists probably wouldn't care that much anyway. (Hope you get what I'm saying, not meaning to rant or anything)

    Okay...... So..... this is cool to me. Painting over a painting to create your own story, cool. But a few things bothered me. The first thing being a personal gripe, the mermaid would have been SO much cooler than just plain white ghosts. And the winter scene could have had cute animals or possibly a yetti or litteraly anything other than whatever the hell the pink dudes were. My other complaint, is when she had said the last painting seemed to have a lack of skill and detail. That's coming from someone with a very simple art style. Others would say her art has a lack of skill and detail but we know that's just how she likes to draw. Maybe that's just the last artists style. It looked purposely simple rather than just a matter of little skill. Sorry that was just bugging me a lot

      @orenji 5 лет назад +4

      Grace Sellers - You were the one who used the term “collaborate” not me. I was just clarifying that the words definition literally means more than one person working together on something. Either way, in regards to your point, I can only reply with my opinion as an artist. Every artist should know what it feels like to put time and effort into a piece. The feeling you get when someone buys your piece because they appreciate it and want to hang it in their home is something that’s hard to put into words - even if it sells for $1. Even if it ends up in a thrift store 40 years later. Those pieces could’ve been appreciated by someone as they were intended. I wouldn’t want the original theme of my pieces altered to someone else’s unless I made it a point to say it was okay to do that and was looking to collaborate with people online.
      And by the way she painted on an oil painting with acrylic. You don’t do that if you intend on keeping the pieces for long. It damages the oil painting underneath. She may not have been aware though.
      This is just my opinion though. It hurt to watch this video 😖

      Edit: I REALLY enjoy people attacking me in the comments. Fellas, i know my art is trash, you dont need to point that out. An artist of that skill level can easily pull off that small and that simple of a landscape. Yes art is hard, but i dont think that skilled of an artist is going to spend months sweating over a small winter scene. Also, someone paid for that painting with their money. Not to forget that those three paintings were really good quality for something that you find at a thriftstore. She could've taken the beat up piece and actually patch it up. To finish she doesn't even use a proper medium over the oil paint. Acrylics do not work well with oil paint and is prone to break or shift colour.
