My credentials: I'm 54 yo, and I caught my first Trout before I was old enough to remember-let's just say over 40 years of experience. I've caught Trout on everything from Velveeta cheese to dry flies, including Brown, Rainbow and Brook as well as Juvenile Atlantic Salmon. My 10 essentials differ a bit from yours, but here goes: 1. A landing net. A good net can actually help more C&R Trout survive as they don't need to be fought near as long before being released. 2. Forceps. These just make it so much easier and less traumatic to remove hooks. 3. Line nippers. 4. A quality pair of wading shoes. Forget felt soles as they can spread invasive pests like "Diddimo"-AKA Rock Snot. Good wading shoes will keep you from slipping on slick surfaces or from stubbing your toe on unseen big rocks. 5. A multi-tool such as a Leatherman. The pliers work better than forceps for crimping split shot, and the knife is handy for any cutting you may need to do. Not sure what to do with Philips screwdriver, though. 6. Wading staff. I've never used one, but I can see how it can expand my access to some places. It's on my wish list. 7. A light weight vest. If your vest is too hot, then it's too heavy. I prefer a vest over the sling pack simply because everything I need is accessible without having to rearrange. Plus, on warm days, I can dip the entire vest in the creek and benefit from evaporative cooling. 8. Polarized sunglasses. The glasses come in handy if you miss a strike and the hook comes flying towards your eyes. Polarization blocks the glare and lets one see into the water. 9. A hat. It helps keep the Sun off your head. It can also be dunked for more of that evaporative cooling. 10. A buddy. OK, not really needed, but it's always nice to have a friend or SO that enjoys going with. Plus, if you stumble or fall, they might be able to pull you out.
Brother, I appreciate your candid opinion whether it is necessary to spend more. I just started and everything adds up and saving where possible is appreciated. Tight lines buddy.
Trout fishing always reminds me of my grandfather 😢 he taught me how to fish when I was 4 and only 12 short years ago he passed away but he made me the fisherman I am today and fishing RUclipsr!
Same with my pap he taught me how to trout fish when I was 6 and he just passed this summer the hardest thing to deal with but I fish to think he’s right with me
Definitely will be getting some of your spinners this year for my boyfriends birthday!! Glad I found your channel! An great tips gonna load my man up with some new gear as well! 😊
Being new to sport, kindly guide should I start fly fishing or euro nymphing which I developed interest after reading initially george daniel book. Kindly suggest good rod and reel options for both set ups and some good fly fishing book like george daniel on euro nymphing.thanks
If you’re just starting I would start with a traditional fly rod. Personally I’ve tried euro nymphing and it can be fun but it’s not as practical as you’d think. Much easier to cover more water with a traditional set up, easier to set up and figure out. You have to basically be right on top of them with a euro rod
@mainetroutwhisperer thanks man... lovely to hear such a valued input.. I wonder if you could kindly guide some gear I should be looking to buy. This would go a long way in wasting lot of money on rubbish stuff. Kind regards. Thanks. Further any good book to get into sport. Thanks once again.
If you drill a champagne cork and glue it to the end of your wading staff will make a big improvement as will hold on rocks even with weight, pressure.
Nice Man!!! I need some more stream thermometers... I seem to go through a few a year (break or lose them). I'll use your link! Love that you're making trout lures with single hooks too man! Best of luck this season and with your channel! At one point we thought we were going to make it up to Maine this summer but our plans got cancelled. I was going to reach out to see if we could fish together when up there (do a collab) or to pick your brain a bit. Didn't work out this year but maybe sometime in the future. If you ever make to to NY or VT let me know.
Excellent. How bout emergency flotation? Yes, I know, how often will that be needed? The M16 is an excellent choice. If you don't need it, it's just a fanny pack.
Dude ! your are Idealistic and Simple to watch and understand Clearly & (making your own lures) Ok this helps out and thanks for the information. I've been fishing the San Juan river by Navajo Dam Since 1969 I'm From Farmington New Mexico but now live in Littleton and also Durango Colorado I have a new youtube channel starting July ( outdoor adventures by martyshangout) and It would be great to go fishing someday. I will be traveling all over the Southwestern States And Beyond. Until then See Ya And I will keep watching and will Share with all my viewers and friendsIf you don't mind. Great Info. For sure. Thks Marty
I've been trout fishing since 72' and if you are fly fishing, you need a leader straightener among items already listed. A piece of rubber inner tube will do, but you can buy them as well. Pinch the leader between the rubber and pull it through until it is straight. This will help control the leader and cast more accurately. You could do a show on leaders

@@faisalrafique6107 echo makes a real nice kit called the traverse. Check it out. Comes with reel, line, etc.
@mainetroutwhisperer thanks man and any good places to order for international shipments!

I can’t find that pack anywhere. Was it discontinued? If so that would suck. It is exactly what I have been looking for for years!
They don’t make it anymore, but they still have a few sling packs. I’m sure they are just as good if not better.
@@mainetroutwhisperer thanks. I’ll have to take a look!
Awesome video! Thanks for the tips!

Dang! I was just in NY actually. Fished the Delaware. Have some videos on it soon.
@@mainetroutwhisperer Cool... I'll look for it. I live in the Albany area but fish the Adirondacks, Southern VT and Northern Catskills mostly.

Awesome Lures!
If you look at old photos of fly fishermen from the 1920s, it's just a rod and a creel

Might need a tackle box, but the other things are nice to have, just not needed to start.
Not a dude, a dudette here. Just found your channel.

The mono audio are a killer for me. I wish it wasn't mono I'd like to watch your tips
I know I’m sorry. Was my first time with that mic and didn’t realize.
@@mainetroutwhisperer I might have to actually just watch it now. Haha.
You would make a good Flyfisher…..
Quite the bargain on the cheap net. Only $498. 😊
What the heck! Haha. They changed the price since I did this. I’ll fix that! Thanks for commenting.
Typical opinion video.
Awesome list & video and thanks for sharing!!
