Love Reddington kit. My first Pike fly rod was a Reddington and I still have it. I also landed my PB on that rod. The trout and the costal kit look great and that Behemoth reel is awesome. Great kits.

By far the best discussion of fly fishing kits I’ve ever seen. As a 60 year veteran of fly fishing all over the US( 25 years, many rivers in Montana alone), in several other countries, in all kinds of waters from farm ponds to the pelagic, I am the owner of 20 plus fly fishing outfits from 8’4w to 10’12w in fiberglass, graphite, bamboo, etc. but I’m likely to buy one of the Redington kits just because your presentation is so convincing !
I ordered the Trout kit today from Mad River Outfitters. I am glad I can help support what appears to be a great company. I am stoked to actually finally learn to fly fish. Thank you Brian for all your videos.
Just ordered one though your shop. I'm brand new to fly fishing. Excited/ nervous to get started. I was looking at the under $200 combo's but this review changed my mind real quick.

I got the Redington Vice combo (9" 4 WT) for like $340 and its AMAZING. Similar to the kits Brian talks about in this video. Awesome combo for the money and their warranty is fantastic. I've caught an absolute ton of fish on it and its a joy to use. I will use Reddington the rest of my life.
Just Bought this for my husbands birthday. He is a great fisherman and wants to start fly fishing! I can't wait for him to open it up in May. I will keep you posted :)
Just purchased this kit from Mad River Outfitters! I'm basically completely new to fly fishing, and the learning curve is going to be steep, but with the help from Brian Flechsig I believe I'll become a decent fly fisherman with some patience and a lot of practice. I did buy a fly rod/reel from Academy 6 years ago or so, it was crap and I quickly went back to bait casters and spinners. Really am enjoying all the videos, the presentation, knowledge and no BS attitude is refreshing.
You’ll love it! I commented above, but I bought the trout kit a few months ago for my first fly setup. I’ve already caught bass, sunfish, and carp on it!
Phil, I like Brian grew up out West fly fishing - even young kids can pick this stuff up and do it. I wish I had this kind of gear when I first learned - it'll be fine, you will quickly get into the Zen of fly fishing before you know it.
My first fly rod setup was a crosswater and what a great inexpensive rod to learn on, I use a 9'6 path for steelhead fishing still and allways reccomend reddignton to people who ask. Best bang for your buck period.
I've fished a 7wt Redington combo I put together in Alaska back on '08 almost exclusively. It slayed up there, and I've sworn by Redington ever since; it's the Glock of fly rods. Now that I'm back in the lower '48 with smaller fish, I wanted something smaller to have fun out there. Based on this video, I bought the field kit 5 wt. Can't wait to try it out!
Timing in life is everything...I was just talking with a friend whose teenage son wanted to learn how to fish, and he knows nothing about fishing. I told him getting a first fishing rig is similar to learning how to play guitar...if you get a cheap guitar that is hard to play, it usually discourages learning how to play it. One doesn't need to spend a grand on a first outfit, especially if you're not sure that they will continue with the sport, but getting something decent so the learning curve isn't painful or discouraging is important.
That was a good review for the bunch of starter kits I mean truly. I was impressed with that I would think about getting a bass or yes costal set up ya never know ya might be in need some day . Thanks positive
$359 for a setup DONE gets one out the door and on the water to find success. Putting one together by oneself costs FAR MORE and tests one's patience, mostly. I would pay this amount if I hadn't already paid a HECK of a lot more even shopping garage sales and this fly shop that sells garage sale fishing equipment. Learned how to fly fish on one of those Wally World reels preloaded with line and leader, slapped it on a “combo” 9 foot rod…no idea what weight it is.I do pretty good. Going out for a few hours tomorrow with it. One of these days I’ll upgrade it, but it’s worked out pretty good for the last 3 years….
That's fantastic. If a beginner, go with one of these. You will literally skip a financial step or two needed to take your game to the next level after getting those strokes down.
I took your advice and purchased the trout field kit. I received it today and immediately took it to the side yard and the difference between it and the "kit" my dumbass brother -in-law gave me was instantly noticeable. Two or three casts with it and I could easily make a 30 yard casts, after struggling with the cheap POS.. The fly line that comes with the kit seems to work like magic. Thanks for the recommendation.

Brian, first thanks for your previous post. I'm a Semi beginner returning to fly fishing. I find now a days the 4 piece rods are as you point out travel better in all respects and are as good or better than the historical 2 piece. I have a budget that allows me to go from just under 1k to a bit more. What might your recommendations be? Thanks You greatly once again for your giving us the breath of your experience. l for one can't say enough about what I've learned. And how you answered long running assumptions I had as to their reality and your demystifying numerous aspects of the sport. Just call me "Red" lol though now it's white.
Nice video, I’m going to get 9’ 8 wt for my first fly rod I usually catch regular sized reds and trouts but would this be good for bass as well I’m freshwater?
Great video! I"m looking to get into fly fishing, never tried it before. I go after some beefy steelhead. Which of these field kits would you recommend for big trout? Thanks
Are there any good kits for the other gear necessary to get started? I already got a rod/reel/line. I’m looking for a kit with a decent quality bag, net, flies, fly box, hemp stats, etc.
I got a Cabela’s kit a number of years ago - 8 1/2’ Sweetwater rod 6-7 wt with 6wt weight forward line. Supposedly for trout and bass. Haven’t had a chance to use it as much as I hoped, but retired now and plan to use it more, here in the fly fishing meca of central Iowa😊. Still using the same line and backing it came with. This Redington kit sounds like it could be quite a step up from that. Based on the video I’m guessing the line the Cabela’s kit came with may be junk. Was wondering if I should just try new line on current rod, or get the Remington. Thoughts?
Which one of these Redington combos would you recommend for a very beginning fly fisher? I'm in lower Alabama and will do mainly pond / lake for panfish or bass. Going to north Georgia in the future as well and might do river fishing too. Thanks so much. Love all your videos.
I'm in Mobile. I think I'm going to order this combo from MRO. It is more than I was planning to spend but I think I will grow into it instead of out of it.

thank you for this! im not in the position to even drop the money for these but this will be my next set up! i bought a orvis encounter when they went on sale for 70 bucks!! its a 8 weight and i know its not ment for saltwater but i got it for that. anyone have recommendations on things i can change on this combo to make it perform at its best in the keys?! ill be going there for the first time ever and i want to see how i do catching stuff like snook and permit
Had a friend buy a fly fishing kit from Walmart because it was on clearance for like $10. He came to me a few months later asking what line to put on it because his wife had been vacuuming and caught the tip of the line in the vacuum cleaner and chewed it all up. So I gave him a Rio line I had taken off a reel to put a different line on and I said, "Here, try this." Next time he seen me he said that it casts so different from the line that was on there. I just smiled and said wait until you cast with a quality rod. Haven't had a chance to go fishing with him yet as he injured his hand last year and is just now getting to where he can fish again.
On the rod in front of the cork grip there will be a number printed, i.e. 890-4 which means; wt. 8 rod, 90 means a rod 9' long and 4 means 4 sections. In this case the rod takes an 8wt. fly line.
I am thinking of buying either the salmon or one of the saltwater field kits. Which would you prefer for someone who recently moved to Alaska? Thanks in advance!
I'm in the market for an 8wt rod, im still very new to fly fishing. Might be a dumb question but my question is what are the advantages and disadvantages to a 2/3/4 piece rod, other than storage or travel. Does it even make much of difference? Thanks in advance.
He said in some video, I cant remember the name, but the connections have gotten so good in recent years that it doesnt matter on a good rod. I have a 4 piece rod and I see no problem. Just put it on crooked and twist it on
You mentioned preferring a 7 weight for bass. Here in Texas some bass get decent sized. I only have a 4 weight I use in CO for trout, do you think the 7 is still a better choice than the 8 weight?
i have a cabelas prestige beginner combo kit, how does it compare.....ive used it couple years, looking at going to a 3 wt or 4 wt rod..any suggestions.....and as for the prstige, i do have trouble casting, will probably go out and get some good line tom and replace whats on
Total newbie here. Love fishing spinning reals but can't get fly fishing outta my head. Which of these kits would you recommend for someone who will spend most of their time on lakes in the southeast? The bass version is my first thought but I'll probably see more panfish like brim, bluegill & crappie and didn't want to overlook the trout version if that would be more appropriate for these.
How do you match the fly line to the rod if you don’t know what the rod weights. Paints wore off, and I found this on the side of the rode about 30 years ago. I’m finally getting into fly fishing. Thank you
If you know the name of the rod i.e. Sage, Redington, Orvis etc. just bring it to a local sport store and they will be able to research with their main companies. They will find the weight of the line for your rod. It will be important for you to know the nos. of section, the overall length of the rod , nos. of guides, colour of the rod etc. Good luck!
Which one of these would you recommend for multiple uses and perhaps just change the line? I want to learn how to fly fish and be able to teach my son!
i want to learn how to flyfish. now, if i get the saltwater combo, i would be able to use it also for fresh water? and what would be the heaviest catch it could get withouth breaking?
@@Madriveroutfitters your welcome keep up with the great work and information and fly knowledge I’m learning every time I watch you guys. And soon will be ordering Fly fishing gear from you guys

What kind of version of this kit you would suggest is the best for pike fishing? In sweetwater lakes and rivers? I thought of the 9wt cold water version?
Bought the 9’ 5wt Wally World combo… now ready to buy, but don’t want a 30 year mortgage on a fly rod combo that I’ll use int the sierra’s twice a year, Branson once every 10 years. I live in Conroe, TX. What do you recommend?
Is Redington’s warranty truly an unconditional warranty? I can’t find anything on their website that states that. Just picked up a Orvis Clearwater outfit for their unconditional warranty.
Super beginner and I want to get this kit but not sure which one to get. I’m in Houston Texas so I don’t have a problem finding bass but I mean you could technically use any of these rods and catch the same fish right? So if I got the trout kit or something I can just catch bass with it anyway?
Don’t wanna sound stupid or anything but would the bass combo work for steelhead? Meaning line, real, rod. New to the sport so don’t know much. East coast fisher

@@Madriveroutfitters sent an email. Thanks so much!!
I'm in Mobile. I think I'm going to order this combo from MRO. It is more than I was planning to spend but I think I will grow into it instead of out of it.
@@ramenstreetblues6917 Good idea and thanks for the support! 👍
This guy is soooo helpful. I’m glad I found this channel. Yay for useful information! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

@@Madriveroutfitters thank you for all the lessons. I’m preparing for my first guided trip in Yellowstone. The videos have helped A LOT! I hope to get a guided tour through y’all one day too. 😎🙏

Had a friend buy a fly fishing kit from Walmart because it was on clearance for like $10.
He came to me a few months later asking what line to put on it because his wife had been vacuuming and caught the tip of the line in the vacuum cleaner and chewed it all up.
So I gave him a Rio line I had taken off a reel to put a different line on and I said, "Here, try this."
Next time he seen me he said that it casts so different from the line that was on there. I just smiled and said wait until you cast with a quality rod.
Haven't had a chance to go fishing with him yet as he injured his hand last year and is just now getting to where he can fish again.
The fly line is so, so, so important. Thanks for sharing.
On the rod in front of the cork grip there will be a number printed, i.e. 890-4 which means; wt. 8 rod, 90 means a rod 9' long and 4 means 4 sections. In this case the rod takes an 8wt. fly line.
“It’s revolutionary!!”😂😂😂
Thanks for watching.
I am thinking of buying either the salmon or one of the saltwater field kits. Which would you prefer for someone who recently moved to Alaska? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching. Please contact the shop directly via phone or email and they will be happy to help.
I'm in the market for an 8wt rod, im still very new to fly fishing. Might be a dumb question but my question is what are the advantages and disadvantages to a 2/3/4 piece rod, other than storage or travel. Does it even make much of difference? Thanks in advance.
Please contact the shop directly and they will be happy to help and answer your questions. E-mail or give them a call. That's what they do!!!
He said in some video, I cant remember the name, but the connections have gotten so good in recent years that it doesnt matter on a good rod.
I have a 4 piece rod and I see no problem. Just put it on crooked and twist it on
@@BassMaster.454 That is correct sir.
You mentioned preferring a 7 weight for bass. Here in Texas some bass get decent sized. I only have a 4 weight I use in CO for trout, do you think the 7 is still a better choice than the 8 weight?
Please contact the shop directly with your questions and they will be happy to help. Call or email. Thanks.

i have a cabelas prestige beginner combo kit, how does it compare.....ive used it couple years, looking at going to a 3 wt or 4 wt rod..any suggestions.....and as for the prstige, i do have trouble casting, will probably go out and get some good line tom and replace whats on

Thank you
Please contact the shop and they will be happy to help. Thanks.

I was looking at the Clearwater combo from Orvis which is a little more expensive (not much more). Would you recommend the Redington over one of those? Thank you for the video!

What redington rod would these compare most to? Is it the same rod with different weights or is each kit a different rod? Thanks.

I'm brand new (a minnow) to fly fishing. I catch a lot of panfish (incl Crappie) what size/wt/etc would you recommend for that type of fishing? Also are the other Redington kits (Vice) acceptable? Thanks

What kind of version of this kit you would suggest is the best for pike fishing? In sweetwater lakes and rivers? I thought of the 9wt cold water version?

Awesome

Bought the 9’ 5wt Wally World combo… now ready to buy, but don’t want a 30 year mortgage on a fly rod combo that I’ll use int the sierra’s twice a year, Branson once every 10 years. I live in Conroe, TX. What do you recommend?
Please contact the shop directly via phone or e-mail and they will be happy to help. That's what they do. Thanks!
Do they have these kits set up for right hand retrieve or would you have to take one all apart to switch it around
Done at the shop. You tell us and we do it! Easy.
Is Redington’s warranty truly an unconditional warranty? I can’t find anything on their website that states that. Just picked up a Orvis Clearwater outfit for their unconditional warranty.
Truly, exactly as he says here. And Lifetime. Orvis is only 25 years. Feel free to call the shop if any questions.
Your videos are very informative. Thank you. However, I wouldn’t combine the sales terms beginner and premium. Can’t have one without the other.
Thanks for watching.
How would you compare the 5wt Field Kit to the 5wt Echo Traverse kit. I'm a relatively inexperienced trout fisherman. Thanks

The Bass kit is mine!
Good choice!
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed!

Is 5WT the smallest? Also, how would you say this compares to the Orvis Clearwater?
Please contact the shop directly with your questions and they will be happy to help. Thanks.
Can tell you right now, Clearwater not bad but it's a practice kit compared to Reddington's offerings in the entry/intermediate classes.
I dont know if they have a combo for it, but I've seen 2 and 3 weights
Is the rod specifically designed just for this kit (trout) or is it a rebranded rod?
If he didn’t specify that here, you’d have to check with the shop directly on that. Thanks.
Redington trout field kit or orvis Clearwater outfit which one is the most worth buying?
