"I leave scientists mentally scarred, triple extra large, wild like rockstars who smash guitars..." That line has stuck with me since this record dropped, and it hits hard still.
Not just one of the greatest Premo beats and Gangstarr songs, but also one of the best hip hop songs of all time. And also one of the greatest feature verses of all time as well.
Straight up. This album defined 7th Grade for me. Everyone was bumping Mase and Diddy while I was like, "Y'all can have that nonsense" lol. This is such a special album to me.
The whole Moment Of Truth album is one of my favorites of all time. Such a BANGER. You can listen to it from start to finish. Some downright CLASSICS on that record no doubt 💯💯
I immediately get goosebumps hearing the cuts in the beginning with the old flicks and JFK... "Up in the sky!?"... "Up in the sky.".... "The moon and the planets are there, and new hopes for knowledge and peace are there"... Absolutely legendary.
Everybody talks about Triumph but this is the Deck verse that I love the most. Of course Guru kills it too....and obviously the beat is something else as well
I've been waiting for this one since the series started... This is the GREATEST SONG EVER!!!! It's like an old friend that I've grown up with. It's been there for me to lean on during dark times and celebrate with during triumphs
Just wanted to say thanks for giving us Moment of Truth. I'll be turning 40 this year and the album has been with me for more than 20 years. It truly is one of those rare complete albums.
There were so many good artists in that time period some names slip through the cracks. The Wu Tang Clan by itself has names that would spark an argument about who is the best MC in that group. I'm not one for top 10 MC list, it's all subjective and personal taste. I have a top 1 list Rakim, his flow and rhymes was one of the sparks that set off the Golden Age of Hip Hop.
Voice was dope ...but lyrically he was average, his content was great ,but delivered it in the most simple of ways ...."you get stole or maybe beat with a pole " lol loved him regardless tho !
this is about "your mental" when mc's swarm a track this legendary, from premo, your mental must be in the celestial realm. ohh yeahh, can't wait.. RIP Guru, INS the Rebel. this is the epitome of hip-hop.
I can't even express how much I love this series and everything you're doing premo. This literally makes my day when it drops and I look forward to every episode. Above The Clouds always gets my head bobbing, it's legitimately one of the best tracks in hip-hop never mind the Gang Starr discography. Never stop being so ill. Peace from the UK!
The intro alone still makes the Hair on the back of my head stand up in the year 2022, the beat the rappers classic hip hop & I'm in my 60's and still play this 💯💥💣
shout out to my boy Arnel who got me this album for Christmas in 98. One of the greatest gifts I ever got, what a classic, from start to finish! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
For me, this is by far and away the best Gang Starr track. It's the one I come back to the most. The lyrics and flow are great but the music is what does it. It's so obviously Preemo but has that hint of Wu in there. Glorious.
Ayo Premo can you showcase some of the work you’ve done with some West Coast emcee’s and rappers…. specifically the production you’ve done for Ras Kass “ Golden Child” or the track with Snoop Dogg “ The One & Only” I believe it was titled, much gratitude and thanks for your endless contributions to the Hip-Hop culture.
I’m 36 years old was 13 when this dropped and it absolutely fuckin blew my mind then as it is now still. I was the biggest Wu head still and so when Rebel ins spit his verse I lost my shit. It completely boggled my mind!! The beat and of course Guru!! This is the perfect record!! What a time to be alive this was 🔥
i wanna share with u all that GURU was a substitute teacher in Dorchester, Boston before he made it big in the rap game, in 84-85 (Emily A Fifield Elementary school) TRU STORY!!!
This beat is just as mind blowing to me now as it was back then and GURU x Inspectah Deck’s versus are still next level bonkers too #AboveTheClouds ☁️🎤☁️
What? Lol. If it weren’t for the ‘bars’, the song would have no meaning. It’s all about the bars, the other stuff is icing on the cake. Put some respect on Guru.
This is my favorite Boom-Bap hip-hop instrumental. And that's saying a LOT, I know, but the goosebumps I get just from hearing the intro to this joint...
The first time I heard Above the Clouds was on Steve Olson's section on the Shorty's Fulfill the Dream video back in 1998. I still imagine skating to this song every time I listen to it!
This is absolutely without a doubt my favorite hip-hop song ever. This song is the culmination of everything hip-hop was ever supposed to be. Immaculate. What a magical moment in hip-hop history. THIS is the greatest Inspectah Deck verse. That's a FACT. This is my favorite Guru verse. RIP. This is my favorite Preemo beat. I can't even believe I can pick one because he has so many. But THIS ONE...*Chefs Kiss* Masterpiece.
Homie Jermaine here in the comments said "Starr Clan" but I'm going to say "Clan Starr." Would love to see a collab album with DJ Premier and some of the gambinos.
This song is single handedly responsable for my love of the Hip-Hop genre ....never gets old... still remember the first time i heard it like it was yesterday.... Preemo the GOAT still doin' it and paying tribute decades later just gives me straight goosebumps ...love and respect ✌
This song is so dope that it literally brings tears to my eyes. There is so much feeling and emotion in the production as well as lyrics. It is a very cinematic song. It deserved to be released as a single with video. RIP Guru!
What I truly appreciate is that despite everything that went down, Premo never ever ever said a bad word about Guru. Never. It's always "we reunited" "things went down" "we did our projects" "we came back". Never a trace of ego. I admire this so much.
I thought we watched "Above the Clouds" already. Im still in anyway. Can you do Ex girl next girl? Loved that song. I still play it. Loved the scratches, baseline, drumtrack sample horns, and of course Guru murdered it
Goosebumps and chills still, every time I hear it over twenty years later. Watching Preemo smile and be so proud of such an iconic record made it even better. Salute the floppy disc!!
Preemo, love you OG That track, no words can describe it. The late Guru said it best "Illustrious feature, narrator you select Accompanied by deck plus the DJ you respect" RIP. You are appreciated Salute👏
Imagine rocking a gangstarr tshirt like that and actually being dj premier. Absolute god of hip hop. A lot of things have come and gone in life for me but one constant has been hip hop and any given day, in any given mood i can still blast a dj premier beat and love it like the first time i heard it
5:20 Thanks for clearing up almost 20 years of mystery in regards to where that intro vocal sample came from. I honestly always thought that part added so much character and meaning to the song. Deep soul. I think that section is potentially the deepest feeling dj premier piece of music. Recontextualization adds further depth and creates entirely different universes of meaning in music. It's self evident how next level this song still is.
Protect DJ Premiere at all costs. Someone evil watching and wanting to own all his masters and original files. He own's a field of gold with all these records
Oh Shit! Every time I play this, I act like it's my first time hearing it! When I use to show off my system at the red lights, or riding though a parking lot,I use have this tape set at this song.
youtube doesnt do it justice but one of my favorite aspects of the intro on this is right after the vocal scratches, the sub bass pops out so phat. just the creativity and beautiful cuts
This is the first gangstarr song I ever heard, this and then moment of truth, and too this day I can listen to these back to back all day long and never get sick of them, the realist rap group of all time!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
"I leave scientists mentally scarred, triple extra large, wild like rockstars who smash guitars..." That line has stuck with me since this record dropped, and it hits hard still.
That rockstar line has been sampled so much by other artists like non phixion for starters....
@@nuyorican91st and that's a DJ Premier production too
You beat me to it, best verse ever
FO SHO!!!!
Non phixion sampled that line on their album. That was a banger
Not just one of the greatest Premo beats and Gangstarr songs, but also one of the best hip hop songs of all time. And also one of the greatest feature verses of all time as well.
Facts
You're not lying.
I agree! 🙏
One of the greatest songs of any genre imo
ruclips.net/video/CRqeKNk7QEU/видео.html
This song, and entire album got TOO many spin in my discman and car. Helped me through a tough time in my life. Respect.
I share your sentiments
Respect 🙏
This song and album still get spin on my listening devices. Salute Guru & primo!
Word
Straight up. This album defined 7th Grade for me. Everyone was bumping Mase and Diddy while I was like, "Y'all can have that nonsense" lol. This is such a special album to me.
" I leave scientists mentally scarred, XXX large, wild like rock stars who smash guitars" Deck always opens with a lyrical onslaught.
yep ...that's some ill verse right there
🔥🔥🔥
makes you think if he shoulda been the opening verse after all 🤔
Deck super underrated. Not my fave wu member but i think he's the mvp of 36 chambers
Hell yea my guy 🤙🏻 Poison bars from the gods bust holes in your mirage
The Rebel INS killed it, as usual.
Am I the only one who likes Guru's verse more? But hey both killed it on their own way
The whole Moment Of Truth album is one of my favorites of all time. Such a BANGER. You can listen to it from start to finish. Some downright CLASSICS on that record no doubt 💯💯
Facts all day. One of my favorite albums of all time, period.

Everybody talks about Triumph but this is the Deck verse that I love the most. Of course Guru kills it too....and obviously the beat is something else as well

So true fam!
Very well said and I totally agree.
Yesss!
Man, I was going to type the exact words and you beat me to it. Glad to see that a lot of us feel the same way about the song. A CLASSIC FOR SURE.
This is usually the first song that comes to mind when I think about Gang Starr
This is the first song that comes to my mind when I think about hip hop.
@@calwilson3155 hell yeah man
Moment of Truth and Code of the Streets for me
Same, but Full Clip too, it was the first song I’ve heard from them
Just wanted to say thanks for giving us Moment of Truth. I'll be turning 40 this year and the album has been with me for more than 20 years. It truly is one of those rare complete albums.
Why isn’t GURU ever discussed as one of the best yet? It’s mostly the voice that gets you up..
There were so many good artists in that time period some names slip through the cracks.
The Wu Tang Clan by itself has names that would spark an argument about who is the best MC in that group.

I know. He definelty is one the best yet.
@Frank Lopez Guru is on your backstreets, in your vicinity.
Bests are entirely subjective. Believe it or not there's people who dont even like hip hop.
Voice was dope ...but lyrically he was average, his content was great ,but delivered it in the most simple of ways ...."you get stole or maybe beat with a pole " lol loved him regardless tho !
There's nothing I love more than seeing all the love for this song.
I'm glad Deck was on this instead of Rae and Ghost. Deck had less tracks with production at this level and totally deserved to be on this one.
“I roam the universe ‘n’ return to earth to claim my throne”
Yo AMi,Blackman is GOD
this is about "your mental" when mc's swarm a track this legendary, from premo, your mental must be in the celestial realm. ohh yeahh, can't wait.. RIP Guru, INS the Rebel. this is the epitome of hip-hop.
DJ Premier, The Guru & Inspectah Deck all rosed "Above The Clouds" back in 1998.
That intro still gives me chills to this day
Above the Clouds is such an amazing track and Moment of Truth is one of the illest albums ever released. Pure heat through all 20 tracks
One of the greatest albums ever made!!! R.I.P. to GURU!!💯
“and when we die hard , they’ll build a monument to honor us with”
We could have conquered it,above the clouds
Both Guru and Inspectah Deck lyrically killed this joint
Inspectah Deck is the most underrated MC ever and I will die on that hill. One of the greatest ever and that’s a fact
One of the most poetic rhymes ever.
Omg . I'll never forget the first time I heard this. I went crazy. Then you had my favorite wu tang member. Premo you killed that intro
One of the greatest songs
In any genre
Ever recorded.

decks verse on above the clouds is top 5 verses ever recorded in hip hop or music history no doubt
GURU first cut was the cold cold world! 1983 in Boston
For me, this is by far and away the best Gang Starr track. It's the one I come back to the most. The lyrics and flow are great but the music is what does it. It's so obviously Preemo but has that hint of Wu in there. Glorious.
I’m with you on that 🔥
This is one of my top 10 track all time. Everything fits together. Flows, beats, sounds, etc.
My favorite Gang Starr song. I would love to see him do Betrayal

I know for sure he's doing Golden Chyld sometime soon, he mentioned it on one of his livestreams 🔥🔥🔥
MC Eiht
The album he did with Eiht is crazy
I assume you went thru the episode playlist where he addressed that right? Because he did episodes of snoop and ras
Can't wait for this! Props to Preemo for giving flowers to everybody he worked with.
"Wild like rockstar's that smash guitars." This track was just straight magic
Man I didn't notice how I was smiling from ear to ear while watching this. Gang Starr one of the best yet.
Holy S#!7!!!... I am near the end of the episode and just as the smile is creeping across my face I'm reading this comment so I can totally relate!
Guru really is the most gifted poetic rapper ever. DJ premier such a humble guy.
