  • Marseille Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church, a national monument of France. It is one of the three main religious buildings of Marseille. Sometimes it is called La Major because of its enormous size. Its exotic style makes it of great interest to tourists. Marseille Cathedral was included in the 1000 best attractions in the world according to our website.
The present one was built in the second half of the XIX century, although since ancient times there was an early Christian church on the site of the cathedral. The Romanesque church, built in the 12th century, was called the Old Cathedral. The modern building was built over 40 years and refers to the Byzantine style. Many people note its resemblance to the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Istanbul. Externally, the building looks striped because of the use of different varieties of marble in the construction.
In the interiors of the temple a mixture of western and eastern styles is observed. In the niches of the walls are statues of the saints of Marseilles. The walls themselves are richly decorated with paintings, gilding and Florentine mosaics, bronze and onyx. It is not in vain that funds were collected for the construction of this cathedral for 20 years. Before the advent of La Major, the status of cathedral was held by the ancient church located nearby.
Geographically the cathedral is located on the square between the Old and New Port. It can be reached by metro to the station Colbert. The church is open to visitors every day except Monday. Total height of 146 meters it is one of the largest religious buildings in Europe. The height of its domes reaches 60-70 meters.
This 4K HDR 60 fps video walk was recordered in September 2022 in Marseille Aux an Provence.
