I have a 427 replica, but it was made in England (with left hand drive) by Cobretti Engineering in 1986 using a 1976 Jaguar XJ6 chassis and a 1986 Morgan Plus 8 engine (the 4 liter version) and gearbox (a classic replica made of classic car parts!) While only about 260 hp it is fun and, with straight through 3" side-pipes sounds cool. It still attracts looks and thumbs up.

These modern Cobra replicas are fantastic!! I had the opportunity a couple years ago to drive a Kirkham 289 slabside that was unbelievable, and so close to the real thing, if not better.....and nothing sounds like a Cobra 289 or 427. Sitting at a set of lights with that magic rumble, and tapping the loud pedal just sends a sharp twitch through the car. They don't build excitement like that much anymore. Hey and all joking this that's what it was but you do you have such a great life there wish I could come out to California and just visit and talk to you maybe someday!
Classic Cobra colors IMO. First Cobra I ever saw in person was in 1983, our school guidance counselor was taking us up PCH near Malibu on our way to UC Santa Barbara. We had to stop for gas at a little filling station and lo and behold there was a real Shelby Cobra 427(not many replicas in those days) up on the rack getting it's left side header collector welded up. Out of curiosity I approach the Cobra and the mechanic goes, "Yeah, it's real" :-) In those days the cars(Cobra 427s) were barely breaking $100,000, but then again, a $100,000 in 1983 is about $600,000-$700,000 today. Of course the Cobra I saw that day was Guardsman Blue(without the stripes) and had it's snap on top with side curtains installed(no roll-hoop). Luckily we stayed long enough to see the mechanic finish welding the collector and watched the owner drive off.....man, the sound of an actual FE big block 427 with side exhaust accelerate quickly away from a standstill is something that only seeing in person can describe the sensation. 35 years later, anything with a Cobra in it grabs my attention!
I've been looking at these (kit car Cobras) for awhile. The fact that they are kit cars seems to mean that quality and value vary GREATLY. You see them for $25,000 all the way up to $100,000. I'd build one myself, but I don't trust my fabrication skills (and it seems like most of the kits show up pretty rough). The search continues...
Great video. I own one with the Roush. Amazing vehicle. As stated below, this is a factory built car not a kit. The interesting thing about these cars is that except for the collectibility factor, these cars are in every way better than the originals. They have BMW suspensions, Tremec 5 speeds, Rack & Pinion steering and racing style brakes. This is by far the most powerful car I have ever driven and that includes my 66 427 Vette. It's a blast to drive and a little intimidating. The sound is second to none. Forget about a radio, you won't be able to hear it. It's definitely a head turner. There reasonably priced. The one in this video will set you back around 75k.
Totally agree and my apologies for the kit car reference. What a fun car to drive. The sound. The feel. The looks it gets. Just awesome!! And it pulls hard and I never got on it that hard.
It only makes sense to use modern components in building a kit car of today. It's cheaper and easier than recreating the older techniques. Fiberglass bodywork too is much quicker and easier and massively cheaper to create than an original AC hand crafted, beaten and rolled aluminium body... A Salisbury differential are expensive, hard to get these days and are all saved for Jag E-Types... The only 2 things you will find in the States today is the engines and gearboxes, but even then, they are now very hard to get. Everything else on these original cars are from England and are equally hard to get. I mean the list goes on...
Excellent.. Just bought this exact car here in Naples Florida. Right with you brother on this one. Great car and a blast to drive and enjoy. Keep the great videos comming..🤘🖖👍🍻
Really want one with a Coyote and the M5 Independent Rear Suspension. They have a 585HP variant that would work nicely in there along with the 6 speed.
but would it have any bottom end? Cobras aren't aerodynamic, and cant go over 150 or so. Plus, in a 2400# car, I dont think you could get that much HP to the ground. The Coyote is a great choice. It would make it handle alot better than that 427
DUDE!!! This CAR is BETTER than an original. An original is nothing but an investment that you DONT drive. How much fun would it be taking your 401K out for a drive? Come on man...revel the moment!! That's one BAD ASS CAR! Period. It's a VERY real car, with very real power, with a very real sound!
11.61" wides out back must really help your 0-100 mph times tremendously. It probably convincingly beats a tuned 3.5 TT V6 F-150 4x4, although against a Supercharged Regular Cab F-150 Coyote V8 it's probably close, because of less wheel spin. She probably only runs high 10's in the 1/4 mi. because of bad grip.
Since i was a little kid I've dreamed of owning a Shelby Cobra and i bet it would eat the Lamborghini. An amazing car and that 1 is perfect but i agree with the steering wheel. I'd go wood grain myself. Awesome!
Damn, Shawn, I don't know how I missed this one! One of my most favourite cars. Shawn, you never mentioned it, but, does this Cobra also have power steering which I believe is an option with the Backdraft? Is there a chance of doing any Cobra comparison tests in the future since you probably have a number of Superformance Cobra dealers in your area? Later!
Thanks for the great vid on my dream car, specifically a Backdraft Cobra but as a few other have pointed out... this is NOT a kit car! Don't call it that! It was not built in DIY guy's garage from a box of parts like a Factory 5, Shell Valley or so many others.
Sorry. Didn’t mean to down play it in any way. I just know you can order it ready to build. My friends at Timeless Kustoms are assembling on now for a client.
From my understanding you can buy the rolling chassis which is still a fully assembled car just minus engine and transmission. That doesn't make it a kit car. Didn't mean to imply you were down playing it and this is still a really great video. If there is a way to buy one of these cars with every part in a box please let me know. It's the only way I "might" be able to afford one.
@@AutotopiaLA You're not really a car guy, are you? It seems like you phone-in a lot of your stuff. You also failed to mention the Backdraft has a 92" wheelbase, making it suitable for normal size drivers.

He really is. I love that he’s a neighbor. Just out for a cruise in his Countach!
Dammit Shawn, I'm so envious and jealous you've got one of the best jobs .....love the car!!
Sorry for making you jealous but I agree...I’ve created my dream business and my friends in this community are truly incredible people. To say I feel blessed is like saying I breath air. Couldn’t be more obvious!! Thanks for enjoying what we’re doing with the channel.
Man! I would really love to have one of those!
You and me both!
That is so cool car. I can´t wait to get myself into a building project for a Cobra.
Childhood favorite, great show💯
Thanks Chris! That thing was a blast to drive.
Beautiful………..could listen to that symphony all day long
This is EXACTLY what I want. All the looks and power of the original but with modern handling and suspension
Yep. I’m with you and it’s not priced out of reality
Backdraft are the best !
Being the only Cobra I’ve ever driven I can tell you it was impeccable. And a blast to drive. That sound!
They are what you make them ! Even factory built cars are "kits " until assembled ! Mine is twenty six years old ! No problems .
There is a wide variety of quality for sure. I’ve found the Superformance cars to be exceptional quality personally
Only in LA would you see a red Countach and a 427 Cobra driving one behind the other. Murica!
And a red Countach with Jay Leno driving...very LA! 🇺🇸
This + A radio = OMFG!
Beautiful car beautiful colour and beautiful sound
It is. Love that sound!
What a hot looking car, roush engine is a perfect match too.
I love my Factory Five Racing Mark III Cobra. Went with the 331 Stroker Motor.
Ahh thats some old memories dude
Carroll??
@@AutotopiaLA Yes sir.
A great quality kit car. Beautiful.
Very cool kit for sure
A perfect replica of this outstanding American Sportster!
It would make it handle alot better than that 427
a 427 in a 2400 pound car.... yes please 😍
DUDE!!! This CAR is BETTER than an original. An original is nothing but an investment that you DONT drive. How much fun would it be taking your 401K out for a drive? Come on man...revel the moment!! That's one BAD ASS CAR! Period. It's a VERY real car, with very real power, with a very real sound!
It really is a badass and I agree...an original would never get driven
Coming very close to buying one!
Awesome! Great car.
What a lucky guy. Pretty neat ride
11.61" wides out back must really help your 0-100 mph times tremendously.
It probably convincingly beats a tuned 3.5 TT V6 F-150 4x4, although against a Supercharged Regular
Cab F-150 Coyote V8 it's probably close, because of less wheel spin.
She probably only runs high 10's in the 1/4 mi. because of bad grip.
Possibly right, don’t know personally but I do know it’s such a fun car to drive.
Just at a car show and saw three original cobras! Would love to have a kit cobra, but can't even afford one of them.
I get it bro. Believe me. They are just so cool and i like knowing a good kit isn’t so out of reach.
I would definitely pick a well made cobra kit car over the real thang !! I rather have a driver then a trailer Queen !
I’m with you
Who cares if it's not the original, it's still a cool car that sounds excellent!
Agreed all day 👊
Since i was a little kid I've dreamed of owning a Shelby Cobra and i bet it would eat the Lamborghini. An amazing car and that 1 is perfect but i agree with the steering wheel. I'd go wood grain myself. Awesome!
Just such a killer car. Massive power and light! Such a blast to drive.
Luvvv the Sound of That Engine 😎
I believe that would be call Guardsman blue.
You got it. Should’ve done a little more research. I was just too excited that I was finally driving a Cobra!
Damn, Shawn, I don't know how I missed this one! One of my most favourite cars. Shawn, you never mentioned it, but, does this Cobra also have power steering which I believe is
an option with the Backdraft? Is there a chance of doing any Cobra comparison tests in the future since you probably have a number of Superformance Cobra dealers in your area?
Later!
I’d love to shoot one of those or a Kirkham
Roush consistently tries to mimic Shelby. Signatures in his cars and all. Follow the leader as they say.
Hard to not want to follow in Shelby’s tire tracks
Gotta ride in a red one with old 429. It was a older kit car. Terrifying into 3rd gear. Nino rulez
The power is brutal and in such a light car. Just a blast to drive and that sound!!
“Oh yes, she will be mine.” I’m not a car guy, I’m a pilot for a living, but this is my dream car.
You also missed the fact that Backdraft uses the BMW E36 base suspension.
Yep. Could’ve done a better job with this video
@@AutotopiaLA You're not really a car guy, are you? It seems like you phone-in a lot of your stuff. You also failed to mention the Backdraft has a 92" wheelbase, making it suitable for normal size drivers.
EXCELLENT video. Informative, interesting and entertaining with a polished professional look. Great Job. Thanks !
Great infomercial for Backdraft !
MANY OF THE CLONES RIDE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINALS
Great video man.
Thanks. Not hard when you’re shooting something as cool as this Cobra
Shawn, if you and your commenters can't get enough of these Backdraft Cobra's, you may want to check out the two following videos: 1) AC Cobra Replica Backdraft 1965 - Smart and Elite Cars (Smart and Elite Cars) 2) Backdraft Racing AC Cobra - Texas Cobras, LLC (Texas Cobras). Enjoy the great sounds guy's!
Thanks
I don’t wanna win no hat or t-shirt , I wanna take a cruise with you and your buddies cars😂😂😂
I love my hat but have to admit having a chance to ride shotgun with Shawn all those bad ass cars is a win-win !
Maybe we’ll make that a giveaway...liability is the part that concerns me here. Maybe sign a release then go for a drive??
Game on Shawn ! 25K or 50K subs to launch this giveaway ?
AutotopiaLA I’d sign anything to ride in 6 figure muscle machines, then I can smile and brag like a kid who just rode every ride at Disney world 😄😄
Me too. I'll sign for a ride on one of these nice cars!!
Who cares if its a kit, just listen to it!!! and bro, ur right down the street from Jay... Lol that's so cool
Very cool being neighbors with Jay! And it is a great kit for sure
Damn it that car sound so good
Sooo badass!!
: My-god, this-sounds-so-GOOD! : When-he-first-sees-JAY: LENO, man-that-rumpity-rump-sounds-good. : Coyote-is-a-great-engine, but-nothing-beats-the-sound of a push-rod-V8!
I agree. Such a killer sound!
I don't mind replicas at all.
If I had one I'd have to have an FE in it with 2x4bbls (I don't care if they make less power than a single 4bbl). That and a Moto-lita steering wheel.
I love the black no nonsense side pipes.
Wow!! Just wow!!
I said that a lot when I was driving it around. Awesome car!
Dream car which is achievable.. Looking at an easy 80k here in Australia towards 130k for top end and depending on who builds it.....
I have this car
Its not a kit car like a factory five
This car is unbelievable!
Sounds awsome and pulls like a freight train
You will respect it or it will kill u and I’m serous
But is simply the coolest feeling ever and with this sound who needs a radio
I love this car. My kit reference wasn’t meant to demean. It’s such a great car.
I think you wrong in something Shawn, this is real my friend, real deal hehe. God bless you. Keep going with AutotopiaLA
Thanks Matheus! I promise we’re gonna keep pushing out videos of extraordinary vehicles. Wait til you see the 68 Camaro we’re shooting today...
