  • The fujifilm X-E4 is one of, if not the best everyday carry cameras out there, and although it has the sane sensor as the X100V, it does have one advantage over its more expensive sibling.

    I looove mine. First of all it's beautiful, everyone thinks it's a film camera. But mostly I wanted the form factor of the x100v but with interchangeable lenses (I love landscape photography and I need more than one lens). I hesitate with a xt30 but I'm a minimal person so the xe4 was the best decision.

    I have both the X-E4 and the x100v and even though I think that the X-E4 is fantastic, they are simply different. The X-E4 doesn’t beat the better EVF of the X100V, doesn’t have an OVF, the digital tele feature, weather sealing, the built-in ND, the super quiet leaf shutter… It’s still great, and you have lenses options, but it’s not really comparable imo. Same package, different user needs.

    • @JustZG
      @JustZG Год назад +2

      Yeah you're right. And ontop of that the x-e4 with a the 27mm pancake lens simply doesn't do what the x100v can do.
      The 27mm lens is not as good, closest focus distance nowhere near as close as the x100v and on top of that is 2.8 vs F2 (2x more light on the x100v).
      If you stick on the 23mm on the x-e4, the lens and camera overall becomes bulkier and much less pocketable.
      It's not better-- just different.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw Год назад +6

    Actually, I think the best budget X100V alternative (as long as you're not doing video) is the XE-3 because you can get it much cheaper than the X-E4, but it's not that much of a resolution loss (24mp vs 26, although it does loose some of the newer features found in the X-E4 and X100V and is more on par with the X100F, which was still a great camera, just the lens wasn't as sharp, but with the X-E3 you can choose what lens you want to use). The other thing is the omission of the hybrid EVF/OVF which some people like.

    Just a correction on 5:30, full frame optical equivalency only affects field of view and the aperture’s practical depth of field. It does not affect the amount of light gathering. So a 27mm F/2.8 on APS-C would actually only look like a full frame 41mm f/4.3 would in terms of field of view and depth of field, but not in terms of “brightness”. In brightness, the exposure of a 27mm F/2.8 would still resemble a 41mm F/2.8.. so you’re only losing low light performance via the inferior sensor performance on APS-C, not optically.

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  Год назад

      There’s a reason why the 24mm 1.8 lens on the iPhone 14 pro max looks different than a 24mm 1.8 on apsc and in full frame. Without the context of these things, people who are new to photography don’t understand these concepts, and can be easily tricked by marketing.

    • @savnac
      @savnac Год назад

      @@MarcTaraz Very true. The differences are in the amount of depth of field, but not in exposure. It’ll still produce the same exposure as the equivalent in full frame. The poor low light performance comes from its significantly smaller sensor size. But you are right. Even if we called it an equivalent F/5.4 (I think that’s the full frame’s equivalent for a one inch sensor’s f/1.8), I’m sure 24mm 5.4 on full frame would still produce more bokeh. There’s definitely some marketing jumbo in there.

    An f/2.8 lens is a 2.8 lens regardless of sensor size. You will not get a brighter exposure in full frame at the same aperture. You can bring up the ISO more on FF though. To me, the perfect lens for my X-E4 is the 18mm f/2 or the Mitakon 35mm f/0.95.

    I would recommend the X-E3 instead. You lose too many buttons on the X-E4 to make photography truly enjoyable. Plus the location of that joystick is guaranteed carpel tunnel if you use back focusing. Even the x100v has more dials and buttons than the X-E4. All other Fuji cameras are designed to make you stay out of menus and in the moment, but the X-E4 is menus heavy. They even removed the M/C/S switch, come on!
    Is it your first Fuji? If so, that must be why you think it's normal to have a slow workflow, but with the X-E3, you can change your settings as fast as the Sony bodies you're using and avoid menu hell. It's even lighter than the X-E4

I thought at that price it would solve most if not all of the issues I had with my Nikon dslr, didn’t even occur to me I’d miss most of my back buttons and dials but it sucked all the joy out of photography for me I hardly want to use it despite being so small and compact. I can’t even begin to imagine what using the x-e4 would be like! If I wanted to just press a button to avoid the hassle of using any of the manual dials then I’d get a point and shoot instead, I don’t understand the unnecessary need to minimalize everything.

    First off , badass video , I can tell you shoot video , music is insane . Xe4 is a great camera , I owned it for a couple months paired with the 23 f2 . I ended up selling it and grabbing a v (for the 3rd time ) for a couple reasons . I shoot a lot at night and as much as I wanted a compact setup I was basically stuck with the 23 f2 because the 2.8 on the 27 was pushing it for me . The shutter altho sounds great was super loud in not so busy area’s and just started to annoy me . The feel of the camera is great but was better with added thumb grip and hand grip but I hated the extra weight . The xe4 is a better performer then the v imo but ultimately it had to go . Enjoyed the video

    It's such a frustrating time for Fujifilm fans the last few years. The last time I checked a week or so ago, the only X100V camera I found online was a used one for $2000US. A quick look for this camera turned up a used body for $1400US.
    Unfortunately, all the alternatives I've seen recommended seem so inferior to the Fujifilm camera that l can't bring myself to buy any of them. I've still got my big DSLR camera and a bag full of lenses, but I'd really like a nice everyday camera with a smaller form factor that wasn't just a point-and-shoot toy.

      I just shoot film. the $1850 I save in camera cost (a nice 1960-70s rangefinder can easily be had for $150. This gap increases if you consider lenses) translates to about 112 rolls (or 4,031 photos) inclusive of film cost, developing and scanning where I live (in Singapore - Kodak ColorPlus/Gold/Ultramax is about 10 USD, C-41+scan is about 6.50 USD, bringing the total to 16.52 USD as of today's exchange rate). 4,031 photos is over two years worth of shooting for me, because as a film shooter I'm used to being very selective of what photos I take.
      To me this Fuji hype is people wanting the film aesthetic (let's face it - it's a Lightroom preset away) without any of the discipline.
      And think about it - any photo not worth even 50 cents, can be taken with your phone.

    • @michaeljdauben
      @michaeljdauben Год назад

      @ntnchua I'm sure a lot of posers buy the X100V because it the current thing, and they are probably the one's driving up the price and drying the supply up.
      I, however, want to get one for specific reasons; specifically the small size and the fact that it actually has controls on it so I can take photos the way I want, not the way the built in program think I should.
      As far as going back to shooting film, no. It's great if that's what you want but it's not what I want. Finally, as far as my smart phone, it has a huge pixel count and multiple lenses, but I HATE taking photos with it. The ergonomics suck. I want a real camera.

    Your comment about it being the equivalent to a 41mm f4.3 is inaccurate about aperture. F stop is measured the same across any format, because it’s a mathematical formula to describe how much light a lens can pass through it. It will have the depth of field of an f4.3 lens, sure, but not the actual light gathering. This needs to stop being confused. Other than that, fantastic video!

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  Год назад

      I’m glad you enjoyed! Not everyone understands the nitty gritty technical things, which is why a 24mm 1.8 on an iPhone 14 pro max looks different than a 24mm 1.8 on apsc and a 24mm 1.8 on full frame. While f stop is how wide the aputure of a lens can open, if that lens is physically smaller, it’s opening is physically smaller, allowing less light to pass thru, hitting a physically smaller sensor, it's going to differ. Taking all these things into account and dumbing it down into an easy digestible way to measure can be very helpful for many people, especially when switching between systems, and using full frame as a baseline to compare it to.

    • @StuartWeir
      @StuartWeir Год назад

      @@MarcTaraz I’m sorry but what you are saying is wrong. An Aperture of f2 on APS-C let’s in the same amount of light as on Full Frame. That’s literally why the standard is used; it’s a mathematical formula, so no matter the format, people can speak of these things in one way and it makes sense. If you don’t believe me, take a full frame camera and meter a scene with it using whatever lens. Then, take your Fuji camera with a lens of equivalent focal length in FF terms, and meter the same scene. If you set both lenses to f2, the shutter speed and iso will be the same

    So what actually better aspect from XE4 vs V? the price and interchangeable lens? If that's the case then I disagree. It can be a budget alternative for X100V but the cheaper price and ability to change the lens doesn't necessarily means it better. Both serve different product positioning that include purposes and target market. X100V is an all around camera with just one lens for those who doesn't want to get bothered with lens choices and still get an outstanding result even for beginner who just use Auto mode only. This is a plus not minus for this product positioning and single lens is a challenge to boost your creativity, a simply great product for beginner who's still learn or awesome B cam for pro and hobbyist. While XE4 is a budget pro (semi pro) that serve many purposes with the right lens. Built quality? same metal but in a second you will able to tell which one is more expensive by the feeling when you hold, you touch and operate. Not like XE4, X100V is not just a sleeker XM1 body design with new sensor and tech. It also more classic Fuji design look than XE4. Actually the list go on if we are talking about the comparative aspect on both camera. XE4 can be an alternative budget for X100V with the right setup is yes, but better is no. X70 and other X100 line before V also can be alternative budget with good quality images as long as you're not pixel peeps. Or XE3 is even cheaper than XE4 with better handling and ergonomics.

    Had the X100V, sold it, at a really good price, love my XE4 and its 27mm ... just perfect ... and you have one more film simulation that the X100V does not have

      Selling an x100v right now is like cashing in gold. You're gonna get a great deal on it

    Dope video. What recipes/film simulations were you using throughout these images?

      My favorite two simulations are classic chrome and classic neg, I use them for pretty much everything!

    Big fan of the x-e4 , I use 2 . the 27mm puts me in trouble tho , in some streets here I can't step back far enough to capture graffiti on the other side of the street . I mostly use it with a 10-24 f4 , it's big but it's awesome . I don't quite get it how that 27 is like half the size of the 16 and 23 . They should make some cool 16 pancake

      A wider pancake would be nice. Or just smaller lenses in general

      There is the 18f2, which is also very compact

    Nice video, I am thinking of a Fuji camera both for photo and video and was thinking of the x-t5 . It does have all the simulation of the x100v/xe4 right ?
