- In this video we take a Honda XR 100 motorcycle engine and install it into a CR80 big wheel. It was a fun project, a bit time consuming, but well worth it seeing my nephew having fun on his new bike!

Perfect bike for advanced beginners and small framed adults ( ladies)!! The great usability of the XR engine in a chassis with real suspension,light weight, and disc brakes. Perfect play bike, nice work!
Don't mind the blowhards that are putting this down. They obviously haven't tried to ride an 80cc MX bike at altitude on some ugly singletrack. They flat don't work.

Awesome work. It’s obvious the gentleman knows fabrication/ machining work. So it’s the challenge that drives him to do it.He enjoyed the whole build as mush as the kid riding and ripping that thing. Kudos to sir. Don’t worry about people couldn’t fathom the idea or concept of the project, most likely they couldn’t glue popsicle stick together. Sorry for my English 2nd language here.

Really enjoyed the video. Seeing the build, the outcome and finally the payoff must have been very gratifying. I'm glad your nephew enjoyed the bike. I like the idea of having the better suspension and styling of a race bike with the simplicity and bulletproof engine of the XR100
That's actually the best thing you could ride on the trails! i love it. I have a crf230, and a kx100 for 2 different reasons; mx and trail. I'd love mx suspension on the 230, and the kx is great except no torque. You have made the best of both worlds for cruising!

I have the biggest problem helping my brother pick out his first dirt bike because he wants a full size frame not to feel awkward on the bike but a full size frame comes with an engine that's too powerful I never once thought about making my own bike/ motor swap.

Just watched this and love it.. a new lease of life for a little old cr, I totally understand why you done this.. it may not scream out revs but I bet the torque is sweet. Hey I have an old motocross action mag somewhere from years ago bbr put an xr100 motor in a yz80 or kx80 but used a head from a jet ski and it took that thing to 180cc, I dont know how well it worked but I'd imagine it was incredible
Turned out awesome! Time well spent I think. People need to understand, that if you can take on a project like this, esp. with another family member, then go for it! It's an amazing way to share knowledge and just fun! ...and talk about light years better suspension! Man, back in the day when I had an XR 80, I'd push that thing so hard it would BITE back! Big wheel is perfect for this! That little 100 single is as bullet proof as they get too, keep an eye on valves and timing chain and it'll last a long time. Really have been enjoying your vids, thank you again for sharing!

Nice one Mike! Perfect long travel xr 100. I actually just picked up a 2002 xr 100 to put around the yard with my two kids on their little electric dirt bikes. Looks like you guys had a nice little snow ride up on dry hill and the footies. Cheers~

My son is 16 months old now, and his uncle Andy gave him a Yamaha PW50, He's still a long ways off from riding it himself but he loves when I cruising him around the yard!

There’s been quite a few that cannot comprehend why we would choose to go for more low and mid range torque over peak HP. We have muddy tight trails up in the Pacific Northwest (the land of rain) so this bike with that motor, great suspension and brakes are a awesome combination. Thanks and I appreciate your comment. :)
I just bought a crf70 with a CR85 motor swap and its insaneee. It has the whole CR85 cradle welded to the 70 neck. The fabricator really did it right but needed it gone, I got it for $480! The whole bike fits in the back of my hatchback, its going to be a crazy summer!

Good job on the swap man! xr100 are a great engine that are way more ridable then an 80 2 stroke especially for a kid that not using all the top end power. People who have ridden both types of bikes understand why people do the conversion.

I had my xr 100 for 2years and haven't rebuilt it I rod it almost every day except for winter it's just my pitbike know but so easy to wheely

Very cool, nice job! The bike sounds great and looks like it runs great too. Great choice putting the four-stroke in the CR80 frame; tons more low end torque and that is what's useful for trail riding. I've always been a fan of the Honda XR's. I bought my XR250R new in '99 and still ride it regularly. And who cares if it took a lot of time and effort to build. That's a big part of the fun is building a project.

I had a XR 250 years ago, great bike! I now have a Xr 650l, it’s a bit of a pig on the trails but is a fun bike for loading up my camping gear and heading out on camping trips. Take care!
I agree with Trevor on his comments. I love the old xr line. I had to sell my xr650L last year, I really miss that bike, I sold it to a buddy and he loves it. I like your projects, because you come up with a concept and make it happen. It doesn't matter if it makes sense to those nay sayers out there, its a challenge to do it, thats what set you apart. That’s to bad you had to sell off your 650L at least there’s plenty of them out there if you decide to get another one someday. My friend and my brother both have 650L s I have traveled many miles on mine 🙂 I’m glad you found my channel, it’s always nice when someone like yourself enjoys my video and takes the time to check out some of my other videos as well, Thanks! I started on an XR80 and moved right on up to a yz 85 in the same month he could definetly handle the 2 stroke if he is skilled enough

Great job ! I love doing conversions ive got a 2001 yz 125 frame fixing to get a 220 kdx engine or maybe a 350 twin banshee engine.

That's awesome! I just found your video. I want to put a KLX140 motor in my YZ80 chassis. One thing you never brought up is how the sprocket alignment to the rear sprocket was done. That's a very important piece as it needs to be aligned perfectly. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to a follow up!
Thanks for checking out my video 👍 The chain alignment isn’t very hard to do, just look it over and use some skinny flat bar as a straight edge and align it from sprocket to sprocket. Also make sure you can try and get your front sprocket centered in front of the swing arm pivot point, this will help keep the chain from changing tension throughout the suspension cycle 👍
Wish I was this techy, I'd do this stuff all the time. Cool way to save some cash and use that sweet frame and suspension.

Ps I just started to work on the old XR100 left over frame. It’s going to be a fun simple motor swap to bring that old frame back for some trail fun again, so keep an eye out for that video soon! @@Mikefestiva Sweet! I will check it out. I just started getting a 06 crf100f back from storage and love the small bikes especially for the kiddos 11 and 12 but I still love riding the small cc bikes its great fun up rocks and mountain terrain where you can whip it around and really use the low gear 4 sttoke power. 1st gear is a lot of fun it's like a granny gear in the older Chevy 4x4.

You should repower the now empty XR frame with a $100.00 side shaft motor, I know the purist will flame you but I love seeing and doing builds like this, that is if your looking for new projects haha...I appreciate the time and effort required to not only design and fabricate these builds but to video them and upload!

I love how the cr80 is soo loved
I bought an 2003 cr85 for my son to do the same thing. Ended up just swapping xr100 suspension on a crf80 then putting cr80 rear shock on. It's awesome. Just need an xr100 engine. Awesome video thanx
Cr80 suspension bolt on to the xr frame?
@@MWhite-dv1uu yeah from 1980-1986 front forks. 1986 being the best cause they switched from drum to disc brakes. You have to get the "All BALLS crf50 head tube taper bearings". The swing arm from the xr100 bolted right on but I had to cut the rear shock mount and relocate it. All the way up as high as it could go in the frame. I used the mount that I cut off of the frame. Xr crf80 frame is the best to use way less of a head tube angle. The xr100 xr80 are all interchangeable. there is a bunch of threads on this on thumper talk.
@@Maults_Mayhem I've been looking trying to figure out what's feasible. I've got a 99 xr80 and a 1996 cr80r (with a scored cylinder)
@@MWhite-dv1uu I went with what would be best for the kids. My son has a cr85 but having the xr80 all tricked up has been awesome for the kids. Every time I go to the track my son makes a friend and they end up riding the xr. It's a mellow motor with suspension.
The xr100 swing arm is the same length as the cr80 and the cr85 swing arm.
For you younger folks, that was the voice of William Conrad in the advertisment.

We do have some great places to ride, plus the snow is seldom in the lower foot hills around here so you can ride about 11 months of the year, that is as long as you can handle some mud in the winter months :)

Rowan Gray Vlogs haha I know some people are really into 2 strokes, I like them too but this bike really got messed up from the previous owner, we bought it with a locked up crack and sat for 5 years with the spark plug out.
Mike festiva yeah hearing That makes it make a lot more sense, and the xr100 motor surprised me in the video, it was honestly pretty powerful. Very nice build.
But thats a 4 stroke that was a underdog bike like two strokes. I call them old world four strokes.

It was a bit of work, but it was a good project for my nephew and I to work on over the winter. It’s well worth it to see him having fun on it! It’s the kind of bike I would have really liked to have when I was his age.

This bike is a lot of fun for my nephew, I'm glad we built it for him.
It's got a 120cc high compression kit with a bigger carb, cam and exhaust, so it's got a few extra ponies in it :)
What kind of street bike do you own?
I had two street bikes but I gave my nephew a old 72 Honda CB200 twin that I modified, but I still have a old 73 Honda CB350 four, It's not crazy fast but it does sound amazing at 10,000 RPMs :)

Mike festiva Currently a 97 Yamaha Virago 750 but thinking about getting a xl650l so I can commute and also hit up the hills on the weekends.
I have a 97 XR650L they are great bikes! My brother and two of my friends also own them.
I have taken mine loaded down with tools and camping gears from Western Washington into Idaho and Montana many times, It's never let me down on any trip. It's a great way to get out and explore the back roads and trails, It's held up going 75 to 80MPH all day on the highway, going over 10,000 foot passes on motorcycle trails in the mountains. My brother took his down into Baja last fall and rode a lot of dunes and his did great, I guess what I'm getting at is there great all around bikes, maybe a bit heavy but fully capable of doing most things :)

Mike festiva I have one question about your XR. Have you heard of anyone having issues with the top-ends on these motors? That seems to be the only issue that I’ve ever really heard about regarding these bikes.

Great video. I should have done the same thing for my daughter. I rebuilt the CR80 and that 2 stroke with no torque and insane pwr band intimidates her.
vinmangt The little 80cc 2 strokes can be a bit crazy with no low end and real peaky top end! One thing that can help a bit with the low end torque is adding a flywheel weight.
It’s not going to transform it completely but does help it out for trail riding.

I run a 10oz on my 01 cr250. But she is overwhelmed by a 2 stroke in general.

Dirt bikes are essentially illegal here, you cannot register them for use on state land because they won't even title a "Dirt bike". They have no problems titling a vintage 3 wheeler....but nope, no two wheel dirt bikes *@$&#% I'm leaving this state in a few years and am honestly heavily considering Washington.
I like this idea, awesome rolling chassis with a rock solid engine that will run till the end of time. My wife rides a xr100 and soon she'll start to want s better bike. Shes tiny so a big bike ain't a option. I do have a line on a cheap cr85 expert with big wheel kit. Hmmm lol

@@Mikefestiva thinkin,,, crf150f trail bike engine would be a good choice. Electronic start would be sweet. I totally get the build, I like to build what I drive, I lift my trucks, mod my stuff for me. My toy is a 88 bronco on f350 straight axles, 408 stroker Windsor, np435 4spd, welded diffs, off rd bumpers, deaver desert long travel leafs of back n coils up front, sits on 39.5 tsl up front and 18x39.5x15 boggers on the rear. I daily drive it often.

I really like this! It's not my money so not my business so who cares it's probably a super fun little bike and well worth the time invested in it, I would just get an xr 200 but that's me and this is cooler
I am in the process of doing this right now, using a few donor CR85,. Question can you get away with leaving the rear engine lower mount in place, can the engine be placed forward another 10mm/ 1/2”?

Looks like some good riding places. I've probably been there or nearby. Is that up by Walker Valley? Do you know the Dirty Mountain Goats? It would be cool to, figuratively speaking, bump into you out on the trails someday.

Cool! I have a hard time believing, though, that even a modified XR100 engine, being a 4-stroke, would actually outperform a 2-stroke 80, especially if rebuilt well...
Steve Hacker No it’s probably never going to as fast as a running 2 stroke but I definitely can say it will outperform a old 2 stroke that had been sitting for years with a locked up crank, Haha 😂 we bought the cr 80 for cheap because the previous owner never knew how to mix gas. It turned out to be a great bike for my nephew and we had a good time working on it together and to me that was worth all the effort 👍 Take care Steve

Hey mike watched this vid a long time ago but just revisited it. This was a great vid! So what did you do to mount the motor to the swing arm? Was that the white bracket on the back of the motor? I wanna start collecting parts now to build my son one when he gets bigger lol

Great video I own several bikes including a 96 cr80 with a borekit. And I have a friend with a xr100 for a pitbike. Mines obviously faster but. Both are amazing and do there jobs so well with no problems, but I like mine more mainly cause it’s a 2 stroke but that’s just a opinion. Again great video.

I would have liked to try out the CR80 with the stock 2 stroke but we bought it knowing the crank was seized, it was just bought for the rolling frame, it is amazing the top end power on those small 2 strokes!!! Take care and thanks for commenting :)

I might buy a cr80 with an xr100 engine. Same exact swap as yours but different year and it has custom cr500 paint job. It's only like £570. The only bad thing is that it's in the UK.

Nice job, the round section tubing is stronger than square section, do you think this will make much difference in the long run?
diecast jam good question, I was just working with what I had, I did not have round tubing or a way to bent it easily. My nephew has been riding it a lot since we built it with no problems so far. One thing to keep in mine is the XR motor is designed to be the frame on the bottom of the stock xr, so I feel it’s plenty strong utilizing the XR motor and it’s mounts along with the lower frame rails we built.
We also plan to build a skid plate.

Hi Mike, for my XLR125RW Project I will have to adapt a XR100 tank to my frame. Do you remember how long you had to heat the plastic with the heat gun and what temperature you used? Thanks from France.
Hi Ben 🙂 I would suggest trying to fill the plastic tank with really hot water to help warm it up, do this a few times to really soften the plastic, keep the hot water in there and try to heat it with a heat gun I cannot remember how hot I was running the heat gun? I do know it was a bit tricky to get the entire area hot to mold without making the tank mushy on the surface, use something smooth and rounded this will help with molding it. Take your time it’s definitely something you don’t have to rush, when you cool it down with cool water make sure to keep pressure on the places you molded to make sure they stay that way as they cool off. @Mike festiva Thanks Mike that will help a lot. The point is to lower the entire tank about 3cm. So maybe I can use the frame himself and pressure the soften tank on it? Did you use some metal or wood the press the plastic?

I would suggest using wood or metal, I think ether would be fine, if you use the frame it’s self try adding something around it to build it up a little, that way once you get it shaped it will have a little clearance once it’s bolted on, this will cut down on rubbing a hole in it later on down the trail 🙂 take care

Honestly the cr80 motor is way better than the xr100 all day, faster, stronger, and has a powerband. Kinda ruined an old bike that they don’t make anymore but it’s whatever because you made your own one of a kind bike and it makes you happy
I think you missed something, the CR 80 engine had a locked up crank, the bike had been sitting for years, the engine was shot.
Yes if the CR80 was running they do make a lot of power for a small engine, but most power is high up in the RPMs, the small two strokes lack low and mid range torque.
You can go back and fourth all day between the two engines but at the end of the day 4 stroke is always better last way longer when have you ever seen a 2 stroke engine run for 30 years without being rebuilt?

Mud Mower Regulators yes I have actually, two strokes were the best most simple type of engine for motocross for generations. Four strokes weren’t meant to be faster they were meant to be more durable. They’re boring and have no kick, two strokes are unbeatable even now

I'm actually trying to do a build like this with a 2003 honda a cr80r that came with a yamaha cr85r engine that doesn't even fit. I have a 250cc I wanna fit in it but, still thinking about how ama go about it because the engine frame space is just small and I'm limited on the proper tools.

I know I'm a bit late but I'm wanting to do something like this with my crf150f but I don't know the dimensions and things for a cr85 bc I don't wanna spend $700 on a cr85 and then something not work I'm kind of younger and want to do the bare minimum do you know what will work for it and if it's worth it?
