  • Hope yall get and appreciate the Star Wars reference, LOL! I had posted a short section of this turning on my first channel, but this is the full long form content. Quartersawn Silver Maple, closed form bowl.

      Thanks, it was the wake up call I needed though. I got lucky with a slap on the wrist, but it was enough for me to change my ways.

    For that bowl to come off and fly up means that you were probably turning too fast. 1000 rpm seems to be a critical speed for bowls going up or less than 1000rpm going down.
    You say you were turning low rpm so something happened to make the bowl fly up. Glad to hear you’re okay

      @gregdownunderinOz thanks, I've heard this also about the rpms, I've watched the video dozens of times in slow motion, the bowl appears to come out lateral towards me at first but hits the tool rest and angles upwards. It's hard to tell but the bowl is slightly closed form, meaning the rim tapers inwards. The jaws never had the bowl, as soon as the tailstock was removed and I touched the spindle gouge to it it popped loose. I've talked to a few turners about and with the inward tapered rim I should have expanded the jaws outwards from inside the bowl like you would a Recessed mortise.
