Woodworm Screw CHANGED My Bowl Making Forever
Woodworm screw is an essential piece of woodturning gear that I use on almost every wooden bowl I make. It's a safe and easy to use 4 jaw accessory that can be used on almost any wood lathe. Every one of my Teknatool SuperNova2 chuck came with one and that is the brand I use. Follow along as we talk woodturning for beginners, the woodworm screw chuck.

    I use stainless screws for my faceplate with square drivers (easier to use) I have never had much luck with the screw, especially with green wood as it can easily continue turning but not lock in place. I have used 5/16 drill bits on my Nova and it seemed loose. Thanks for running us through the various screws.

    I've been using the wood worm screws for many years now and I use the small jaws smaller bowls and the larger one for large bowls at 71 years old and have started turning at the age of 12 not saying I've used them that long but from the time they came out until now and I'm on my lathe at least 3 times a week once you learn there capabilities you will enjoy turning even more!

    Lots of good info here thanks for making this, don’t worry about struggling to explain some of it. the camera just does that to people lol. The Chinese Amazon chuck I bought came with one of these but the threads are flat for some reason. You ever run into that?

    I spun my lathe around so my back is to the wall to make it easier to video tape for our club for zoom meetings through Covid. I would not face the wall again. To be clear, I know diddly squat about chain saws. But what are those spikes for at the base of the blade/bar? Is that a safety feature, so if it kicks they might bite the wood and keep it from flying back at you?

    • @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks
      @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks 17 дней назад

      Falling spikes or dogs. They dig into the wood and give you a point of leverage to put more force into the cut. Most useful for when you're actually cutting the tree down, the sideways cuts don't have gravity aiding the cut.

      I live in Michigan 3 blocks away from Lake Erie, it is pretty humid here. I bring my bowls in the air conditioned house though as soon as I turn them. My first 40 or so bowls were all turned green because I didn't want to wait to twice them, I caught the turning bug bad and wanted to make them as fast as I could, I was giving them away to everyone lol!

    I’ve done both but the reason I twice turn more is that when they do warp even a little I can finish them and make the bottom flat. How to do repair warping bottoms in once turned so they sit flat. Thanks

    • @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks
      @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks 19 дней назад

      I turn the bottoms concave slightly so no matter how much the shift there's always 3 high points and they sit sturdy. With this reasoning one could always sand the bottom on a disc sander to true it up and re apply some oil or finish. I have not had the case where I've needed to do this yet though.

    I turn all of my green wood once. I find it crazy to think about letting a large piece dry for 2+ years to twice turn it. Much of the wood I turn green does not warp at all. I even turn green pieces thick and they don’t warp or crack. I put my green turnings in a plastic bag with wood shavings to let them dry slowly. It takes up to 1 month for my pieces to dry. That’s way better than waiting two years 😂

    • @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks
      @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks 20 дней назад

      Good stuff! I've always been worried about mold or mildew doing it your style. But it sounds to be quite the popular way of doing things. I just bring them in the house and rub some oil on them every couple of weeks for a while lol! I'm with you, I'm not one for waiting. I like to put a piece of wood on the lathe and finish it that day. Thanks for the feedback buddy.

    • @nickfessel2201
      @nickfessel2201 20 дней назад

      Yeah, depending on the species plastic bags can cause significant spalting. Also, I think success with once turning green wood depends on one’s location. I am not in an extremely dry climate so that helps a lot.

      @nickfessel2201 yeah I'm in Michigan 3 blocks from Lake Erie. My backyard was naturally making some beautiful spalted maples before neighbors called the township on me and I had to get rid of my log pile. We get mold growing on all the houses out here it's so shady and humid.

    love the talking along and commentary. I also learned in the same way from Richard Raffin and Tomislav Tomasic. Ive tried rough turning bowls a couple times but i love using recycled timber like stair treds as they are usually made from harder woods. however i never considered the space savings of the roughed out bowls and i will definitely have to go through some of my wet branches.

    Looks great Ray! Couple questions about your stuff. What chainsaw were you using and do you think the 14” bandsaw has enough power for roughing bowls. Do you ever wish you’d gotten a 17” bandsaw instead of 14”?

    • @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks
      @RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks Месяц назад

      Hey Stuart bandsaw first. I found itbon marketplace for a good deal. You are correct in that a 17-18" would be way better. Right now my lathe is 14" swing and that saw can handle 13x6" blanks all day. Rikon seems to have the most HP on their machines in class but the next move would definitely be something 220v with a bigger table and deeper throat.

      Ok next is chainsaw. That is a Echo 620p 60cc pro saw with a lightweight 24" Tsmara bar. 620p is one of the best saws you can buy for the money and features you get. Always go pro saw and not the homeowner/farm/ranch equivalent. A smaller cc pro saw will cut circles around a larger cc ranch saw. Also 60cc is about the minimum I would use for rip cutting/noodling logs in half. Smaller saws can do it but they constantly clog and jam because they don't have the power to push the noodles through the clutch cover. Chainsaws were designed for crosscutting, and milling through the endgrain is hard on the saw and on your back. I love my saws as much as I do my lathe so any question on those hit me up. My Stihl 461 75cc saw is my favorite for ripping logs but I'm eyeing a Chinese clone of the 066.

      @ thanks for the info. I have a 10” bandsaw now that is way underpowered. It’s cutting capacity is fine but only a half hp motor is the biggest problem. Wanting to upgrade eventually

      @STMwoodturning next to horsepower the most important thing is a quality and right spec blade. I believe i use a 3tpi 3/8 timberwolf blade with alternating teeth to widen the kerf, I can't remember that styles name but it's made with bowl blanks in mind. It's got an aggressive cut like a resaw blade but also a good turning radius for tight circles.

      @@RayApodaca-DacaTimberworks I’ve got the Echo 590 w/ 20” bar but am looking at the Chinese knockoff of the 660 as well. I run a 3tpi, 1/2” blade on my bandsaw. I had a Timberwolf blade for a while but it got dull just as fast as the cheap ones so…
