Totally agree. I started dusting my own ends and saw retention but knew I needed a professional cut and had my first one 7 weeks ago. Best thing ever!!! My goal is every 10 to 12 weeks. 10th week to assess ends and go for a trim if necessary, or wait 2 more weeks and then trim. I then I held back my retention in the past but no more!🥰

Yes, took me almost 2.5 years to get a professional trim & can diffently feel the difference. I am at the 2 month mark....by month 3 or 4 will do again. My fairy knots are very, very few & that is 👍. The revair has also helped with my end as well as keeping them moisturized. I didn't realize I needed a professional trim until I got one...now I know

My biggest hair mistake was leaving my braids in too long. I left my braids in so long my hair matted, and locked up. Both my husband and brother had to help me detangle what had become a nightmare! I couldn't do it alone. It took us a few days and a lot of money was spent on products to help with the detangling process.
Not only did I not retain any of the length I'd gained, but I lost a lot of hair in the process, with so much breakage it was sad. Lesson learned. It was a few years ago, and my hair has since recovered, but I learned you shouldn't neglect your hair just because it's tucked away in a protective style.

When I was in school I would wear braid extensions for 12 weeks. I really shouldn't have but my teenager scalp could take it. I would spray every day with braid spray and shampoo every month and oil my scalp. I always took it down with oil and a fine-toothed comb, Spent all saturday doing it. Lol! I was lucky to have not suffered damage back then. Once I turned 30 my scalp became sensitized, so I don't wear braids anymore.

The biggest mistakes I've made with my hair have always been moisturizing and keeping my ends trimmed. Now, after 10 + years of being natural lol, I've seen much improvement with my hair overall. I wear color on my hair now, so I'm having to do more with keeping up with it, but it isn't stressful. My current routine is moisturizing my scalp and hair every four days ( I do have periods where I'm just lazy lol). I spray my scalp with water and oil it. Then, I use water mixed with leave in conditioner on my hair and use a butter or moisturizer and oil to seal it all in.

Oooo yes i have a couple hair mistakes!
    1. Going overboard with protein treatments (hiPo, less is still more haha). And i mean, WAY overboard. Leaving rice water masks in for hours overboard. Never again!
    2. Onion pulp. Here i was being stubborn xD Tonya said, wisely, to STRAIN the pulp and use the liquid. Did i listen? No 😂
Result: Onion smell that lingered for weeks (uhuh), as well as much stiffness and rigid hair, similar to too much protein in the hair. However, it finally all came out when i tried steaming my hair.
    3. Not protecting my hair against humidity. This is a rather recent, but very big one. Humidity is no joke. It causes SO much tangling and thus breakage, not to mention ruins my definition 🥲 and hard styling work!
Glycerin is a culprit best avoided, so it seems.
    My lessons?
Always listen to Tonya! 😍🙏💖 Hihihii. Seriously.
    Go easy on protein
And if you also have ridiculous tangling and frizz, see if humidity solutions could work for you too.
Gosh, I've written an essay 😹
Thank you as always dearest Tonya! 💖

steam and steam. basically apply a spray leave in detangler and a cream leave-in conditioner daily...not a large amount. For the cream leave in no more than a UK50p/USA25c coin size and then wrap you hair in a plastic cap and a hot towel for 20 minutes every day. Experiment to see if you need more or less but appply it every day especially to the ends. shampoo and deep condtion every week with the same plastic cap. Keep your hair in a short term protective style, 5 days out of 7. By short term protective, I mean something that you take down every day or every week. I wear twists, flat twists or 2 or 3 dutch braids and wrap my hair for work. My workplace allows it and the heating and air conditioning dries out my skin, scalp and hair at work. I keep my hair protected from the weather sun, rain or wind. I have winter and summer head scarves and hats. I only wear my hair down for a few hours of going out to an event or church. the rest of the time it's most ly covered to protect it. I have very dry hair and the grey strand are definitely unruly. A scarf makes them lay down too. Lol!

Mistakes in the beginning that I currently do not do anymore on my low porosity 3/b-3/c curls:
Using shea butters and coconut butter styling products (weighed my hair down and felt greasy to the touch)
Cold shower wash to “seal” moisture in
    Not trimming frequently
No Poo method (lasted 3mnths because my scalp burned and was extremely irritated plus smelly😢)
Using just Styler products with NO Leave in conditioner to moisturize (dried my curls by day 2)
Washing once a week only. My hair needs at least two wash days a week for my fine curls
Not using a bonnet or satin pillow (my hair had breakage and tangled easily quite often)
Pulling out dried ends manually which probably did more damage than good.
And the last but MOST IMPORTANT ONE, overlookjng your health/diet. This is a must. Especially your water intake.

Get you about 20 crocodile or sectioning 3/4 inch long clips and some seamless combs and a tangle teezer and a detangling butter. Some people use non-tangle bands but I find the clips easier. You have to divide and conquer if you have long and/or high density hair. I have short high-density hair and I have to divide my hair in 20 sections .... otherwise I miss out a spot and it becomes an even bigger Knot! Watching women detangle in the shower with a wide tooth comb in zero sections gives me anxiety because I know my hair could never. My hair is weakest when wet. I detangle on DAMP (not wet or dry) hair with a comb/brush/product made for detangling. If it doesn't say detangling on the product/tool, I'm not going to use it to detangle my hair. For example, the Denman brush D9 is a styling brush, not a detangling brush.

Don’t get me wrong every once in a while when you want to look cute I will do a slicked back bun, however, when I used to do them too often, I started to get breakage in the back of my head and in the front of my edges. Now I do twist outs and let my hair out, and that is the easiest way for me to avoid breakage and damage because there is nothing tight pulling on my hair. Now I’m kind of paranoid when I do tight styles because I think my hair is gonna break off.

Thanks for the tips. My mistakes were 1. not doing trims before putting in braids. 2. Not moisturizing my hair more often when I have braid extensions (Marley braid hair sucks the moisture from my hair!) 3. Not doing protein treatments followed by a deep conditioner every month or so. What do you think about using Knox Gelatin as a protein treatment? Some people mix it with a deep conditioner so that it's balanced. I ask because I can't use a lot of products with fragrance and most of the protein treatments I've come across have fragrance.

I didn't realise at the time but your hair should be trimmed every 12 weeks so if you wear braids for 12 weeks you trim before and after wearing braid extensions. When I wore braids, I used braid spray every day and shampooed and used a watery conditioner once a month. My scalp can't tolerate braids now anymore. Um a protein treatment every month is a lot for someone who doesn't have high porosity and/or fine hair. Be careful with the protein.

@@marleyhill34 Hi Marley. I only wear braids for 1 month at a time because they start to look messy, plus many hair specialists don't recommend wearing them longer than 6 weeks. When I say trim, I mean kinda dusting my ends a little. I do light protein treatments monthly because that's what my hair has been responding well to over the past year or more. I shampoo my hair weekly because I exercise and my hair and scalp have been looking healthy because of it. In the past, I used to wash it every 2 weeks while I did sports and I had scalp problems. I don't have those problems anymore because of washing with a moisturizing shampoo weekly to get the sweat and products off my scalp.
