How to Build a Temporary Wall (With Metal Studs)

  • Lauren and I decided to continue living with Lauren's Mom until our second baby is a little older. In the meantime we need to turn one bedroom into two.
    I built a temporary partition wall (complete with lighting and HVAC) for about $350. What makes this wall temporary? I can dismantle it in an afternoon with only 9 screw holes to fill after I'm done.
    I forgot to mention in the video I installed a smoke detector in Hudson's side of the room.

    First of all, insted of using a mounting tape, use a special acoustic insulating tape. The tape mounted between the walls and flors reduce noise, sounds and vibrations. The second case. The wall has no sound insulation. I use mineral wool.

    The excitement for the nap is hilarious! I had never really thought about metal studs being cheaper than framing in wood, I may look into that with our next project. I am building out a video editing area in our garage, while still keeping it as useful project space and have to build a small amount of wall for it. The end product looks great, and I bet Hudson loves having hsi own space, especially as he gets older.

    I did industrial drywalling for a couple weeks right before school started. With 35 foot long metal studs and its such an easy concept but little things get in the way. Doubling up on door frames and high contact areas of stress is above standard practice, along with drywall screws every 12 inches instead of standard 16 I think it was. Idk I'm glad I did it even tho my hands got cut up, I hated life, and barely knew what I was doing

    Great video, and you’ve explained it well. I look forward to the future projects you’ll be doing. A couple of questions though, how are you planning to remove the rectangle vent since it was so hard for you to even put the screws in? Will you be cutting it to get your drill into the vent to unscrew it? Plus, have you had any problems with the stability of the wall since it was taped at the floor? And one last one, did you have a hard time cleaning the tape marks on the floor after you remove the wall? I am just guessing that you’ve removed the temporary wall already

    Quick question.
    I'm looking to do the same and I too have laminate wood floors. Is having just the tape on the bottom and top enough strength to hold the wall over time?
    If you were to screw it into the floor is it possible to patch laminate floors without removing an entire piece?
    Thanks, great video!

  • @lazywagon
    @lazywagon 4 года назад

    Awesome video! This is exactly what I was looking for. Except, I want to find a way to not add anything to the bottom panel since the floor is a nice newly finished hardwood floor... Any ideas on ways to get that done? The only thing I can think of is to securely nail the joints of the wall panel to the floor panel. And same for the mid room panel between the top and bottom panels... Just so as to not move the bottom panel. To avoid scratching, I'd just add styrofoam planks fitting in between the bottom panel and the floor. But any better suggestions are welcome!

    Great Idea, but could you tell me how solid the door fells when you open and close it? Does it feel just like a regular door or does it feel a little flimsy because of the metal framing? And how has it held up?

    Bad idea with the tape, when you remove it it'll leave stuff stuck. Use 2 wood studs on either end pounded in for ceiling floor pressure and a piece of carpet with the sticky side facing your metal bottom plate and top plate to prevent permanent marks that you'll have to sand off

    how old is hudson? I'm asking because my 12 month old NEVER is soo eager to go sleep or nap. its like we just follow a schedule where its wake at 6~7am then nap at 9~10am then wake up at 12 then nap again at 2pm then wakeup at 4pm and then sleep time at 7:30pm after bath. and he's mosly either indeferent or angry to go sleep or nap. maybe its just the age or we don't get him into a sleepy mood...i dunno. got any tips for sleep routine? maybe a next video idea :)

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  6 лет назад

      Hudson is 21 months old, and only recently started running in for nap time (he has also recently been allowed to take a couple stuffed animals in with him and he loves that). We worked hard on sleep training in the beginning but I think just got lucky that he likes a schedule and has always liked sleep. Right now he's only taking one nap a day so I think that has to do with why he is so eager also.
      To be honest, I don't remember too many details about getting him to fall asleep on his own (it might just be that I'm blocking it out too lol), but I think with the next baby I'm going to try to keep track of things and make a video about it.

    I am not sure of the building codes in your area, but typically you can't have a bedroom that is accessible from another bedroom. The door should have access to a hallway. Essentially you have put your son in a closet.

    • @brittzkrieg
      @brittzkrieg 6 лет назад +1

      Even if the closet bedroom was legal (which I'm doubting), isn't each bedroom required to have a emergency egress window? Now the inner bedroom that is attached to the hallway has no emergency egress window.

      We know a lot of people have their kids share a room and everything works perfect, but we figured since Hudson is such a good sleeper we would try to not disrupt that as much as possible. By the time we leave here we'll probably just have them sleep in one room wherever we end up moving to.
