Hi! Just finished watching this beginner tutorial, and I'm seriously considering purchasing the full course. I'm 37, just diagnosed with diabetes, and looking to find creative ways of losing weight whilst learning something new and fun. Even though I have no sense of rhythm or dance and would have no outlets to show off any skills I may pick up, I'm still highly interested. Question: where would a person living in a rural area with no access to a stage, find a place to practice. Any suggestions?
Hi Steve! Thanks for your comment and question. Fortunately, with tap dance you don't need a lot of space to practice. If you invest in some plywood to lie down, this will enable you to start making some noise quite quickly. There are a number of different portable tap floors out there as well, which could be a great option to invest in. The course notes contain a number of different ideas for making your own tap floor. I hope this helps, and all the very best!
Good evening sir 😊 I am interested in learning how to tap dance but I cannot afford shoes or/and lessons. I have two questions to ask. 1) what are the best shoes to exercise with when tap dancing? (except for tap dancing shoes, since I cannot afford them) 2) Do I need to exercise and warm up my legs before dancing, just like in any other dance and sport? I'm mainly asking because I have an issue with my joints.. I became taller a lot faster than my muscles could support my height and now all of my joints are very loose. Do you think this type of dance is not for me? This has stopped me from dancing and doing various sports before. I don't want my body to give up on this. Thank you in advance! I appreciate the fact that you put effort in these learning courses greatly. Keep doing such a great job and have a lovely evening!! 😄
Hi there! Thanks for your comment. In answer to your questions... 1) I'd recommend wearing shoes with the hardest sole possible, until you're ready to purchase some tap shoes. 2) Yes. Absolutely. The steps covered in the video are actually good 'warm up' steps that will help get your legs ready for more rigorous movements. In the full Just TAP course (available at justtapdance.com), there is an included warm up video. Sorry to hear of your joint issues. Tap dance doesn't necessarily have to be done with a huge amount of attack, and thus can be quite gentle on your joints. But, as to your specific condition, I can't really answer if tap would be right for you, and I'd recommend speaking with your doctor or physician. However, I'd imagine you'd be able to do at least some tap dance without it being a problem (once again though, allow me to stress my recommendation to get some medical advice). Thanks for your kind comments, and all the very best!
This is like random but it just came to mind, if you walk through a metal detector but you’re wearing tap dancing shoes do you have to take them off ? 🤔
There are actually straight legs in tap. Example brush hop step brush hop step ball change going forward. While attempting the brush, your leg should be straight and toes pointed.

I decided to learn to tap myself just a month ago! I've never taken a dance lesson in my life and had horrible fear of failing. Luckily, our instructor has taught all levels of dancers and she's got the patience of a saint. We're learning the Coles Stroll and once we get to the end of it, everybody that was in step is now out of rhythm. I can only imagine what my teacher is thinking about the cacophony of hoofing foot noise knowing that she knows how it ~SHOULD~ sound. I actually start giggling so hard I loose my rhythm because the sound is so awful and hilarious. It goes from this beautiful syncopated sound to cows stomping in a barn :-) I've been taking lessons for 4 weeks and am loving it! I decided to put in a small dance floor in my garage (I bought snap together tiles for tap dancing and foam underflooring - the first 2 weeks I tapped on concrete *laugh*), am adding a flat screen TV with a DVD player which will be here tonight (oh boy!) so I can watch DVD's , RUclips videos (I bought a cable to connect my phone to the TV), and my teacher (who let's me record her) and practice at home every night in a warm garage during the cold Oregon winters. I love finding people that have posted these videos, especially for those of us new to tap. So you get at it girl and don't look back - your body will thank you. I can only hope it gives you as much joy as it has for me. I'm unapologetically addicted.
@@ariel-4131 It's so worth it. It keeps the reflexes strong, and rewires our brains I'm finding. Just the act of doing something so new to our bodies is phenominal brain chemistry. Give it a go! Yeah, I did tap from ages 4 to 10 so 6 years, I’m thirteen now and I would start lessons again but my mom won’t let me because or COVID-19. This reminded me of some simple steps I used to do.
One thing that really helps get into the tap dance mindset: start your improv with a limited movepool. See what you can do with only heel drops and toe taps. Experiment with rhythm, repetition, pauses, and everything else. Then you can add shuffles and flaps to drastically increase your perimeters before even touching the 'fancy' stuff.
I used to do tap for about 4 years when I was young. I was very good at it, but I kinda stopped. Now I'm getting into theatre, and I'm about to audition for my 3rd play! The play has tapping in it and I'm going to be purchasing a new pair of tap shoes on Wednesday and get back into tapping. Thanks for this tutorial, it really helped!
Thank you so much! I've been tap dancing for over 30 years but it came naturally and I never took the time to pick it apart and feel I have lost my polish. So, I decided I wanted to go back to the classroom. The way you take this step by step (no pun intended ) and really focus on where one's feet and posture should be helps tremendously :) I love tap dancing so much and feel it's becoming a lost art form.
I have been wanting to get back into tap for awhile now, as I have not tapped since I was five! I just turned thirteen and bought some tap shoes and I’m ready to tap again, very helpful!
excellent breakdown of the mechanics. Although I'm 70, I'm eager to learn and don't want to develop bad habits or sloppy techniques as a beginner. I've watched several videos, and this was the only one that mentioned keeping ankle relaxed in the shuffle. what a differnce that made!
I am considering picking up tap and teaching beginners after over a decade’s break, and it’s really helpful to hear your way of describing the basics! Thank you for a great video 😃
I may or may not be a theater kid on a newsies high and trying to decide if buying tap shoes is super impulsive and if it’s even worth it cause I’m 16 and cannot dance to save my life 😅
Yay! Gotta love that Newsies high 😉 Tap shoes are a great investment, but you don't need them to begin with. Below is a link to a bunch of different resources and frequently asked questions about tap shoes. ...and don't forget to add the 'yet' at the end of your sentence..."cannot dance to save my life, YET" 🙂🙏 we all have to start somewhere. Good luck! 👊🏻 Link ---> www.howtotapdance.com/resources/
@@taptopiaofficial thank you so much! Impulse won today and they will be arriving in the mail on Wednesday! I got some pretty inexpensive ones to start with but they had fairly good reviews and I’m super pumped to get them! Hopefully I will prove myself wrong and maybe even be semi good at it! 😂
I've always adored dancers, but tap dancers were always on a whole other level. I've always been tapping my feet, trying out a little dancing when I was bored, but now I found this channel. I'll definetely will put effort into learning this next to my normal studies. This video alone was fun to work with.
This is excellent; incredibly well-explained and demonstrated. I only wish my childhood tap teacher had had your Nobel-level communication skills! It really makes a difference to be able to understand the physiology of it. I've missed tap so much and seeing this has made me feel it's possible to start again. Thank you!

I do appreciate how you teach without talking down to the viewer. Most of the videos I have found so far have made me feel dumb. Thank you for being an excellent teacher!
It's never too late to start 🙂 I began tap dance when I was 16, and have enjoyed a career in tap dance for my entire adult life. Don't let your age (or anything else) stop you 👊🏻
Yes absolutely! Thank you for reaching out, and for your kind offer. I would definitely be open to including other subtitles in the video, and would greatly appreciate your input.
Just purchased your course. My grandson takes tap lessons and I wanted a tutorial that would help me support him with practice throughout the week. But I’m dusting off my shoes now. This is amazing! Thanks!
Thank god, a youtube tap tutorial that talks about the importance of loose ankles from the word go. And starting out with toe heels (probably the most underapreciated step in tap that connects almost any combo or rhythm you have) Well done.
I'm just starting tap in about three days and I'm really nervous so I went on RUclips to try and find some pointers and this video helped me tremendously keep up the good work! And can you please do more tap for beginners you explain it very well

When i was around 10 yrs old....my school had a play and they had me tap dance. All the other kids in my class hated it and kept talking crap....me too. Until i actually started tapdancing....it...felt....good! Really good! Then the play was over and i stayed thinking about tap dancing and how cool it was for years! But it was not popular and i didnt feel motivated. Now im 37 yrs old and....im ordering a pair of tap dancing shoes. Cant wait! Thanks for the video!

Is 13 too late to join tap dance? I really like it and, being a fan of musicals, I know quite a few songs that have it as part of the routine and it just looks so fun but I'm wondering if you have to start it early or you can start at any age?
What a great demonstration. I took tap classes many years ago as a young adult, my tap shoes are still in my cupboard (!) and I would really like to take classes again. Growing up in a small conservative town, there were dance teachers who taught tap, but in those days it wasn't the thing that boys did. 😢 It's a wonderful form of exercise and of course being able to tap dance is just the greatest! You have inspired me.🤩

LaurenCincinnati I agree. I’ve been tapping for about 10 years and this made me rethink some simple moves that I’ve grown to overlook.
Yeah, I did tap from ages 4 to 10 so 6 years, I’m thirteen now and I would start lessons again but my mom won’t let me because or COVID-19. This reminded me of some simple steps I used to do.
Still tapping?
@@KarenEQuigg of course. To dance is to live life to the fullest.
That's lovely to hear! All the very best for your audition :)
Not sure why, but recently I've just been tapping and scraping my heels quickly everywhere, I no might take lessons...
Wait that is EXACTLY ME I used to tap but I’m on MY third play which is newsies! That’s so funny!

Yeah, when you need to get the role, theater is a great motivation to learn something like this.
It's the First day of the year and I really want to learn tap dance
Fantastic! I think that's a wonderful idea :)
Yeah!!!! A lot of thanks for helping me in! :)
You're very welcome :)
@@topsupport8211 How goes the thing mate?
How’s it going?
Newsies brought me here...
Anyone else?
The Book of Mormon brought me here, lmao. I wanna learn tap just because of Turn it Off :^)
Addicted to Broadway yes sir
Newsies and Book of Mormon brought me here 😹
YES, I thought it was just me
yESSS AND THE BOOK OF MORMON
lmao it’s quarantine time so i’m gonna learn the most random things
Hooray! :)
That's lovely to hear Rachel! :)
Oh... Man... I'm 38 isn't it too late for me to start...? I've fallen in love with this stuff.
It's never too late to start :) That's one of the best things about tap!
It's NEVER too late! You are ALWAYS welcome to dance! 💃
ye it is :)
I hope not. I’ll be 49 next week.
Im 73, first lesson Friday!
it’s really late at night and I’m really bored but I’m actually seriously considering learning how to tap! thank you for the tutorial :)
Hooray! :)
I have been wanting to get back into tap for awhile now, as I have not tapped since I was five! I just turned thirteen and bought some tap shoes and I’m ready to tap again, very helpful!
That's great to hear :) All the best!
Great ATTITUDE!!!
OMG that’s legit me. I tapped for ages but quit and now I just turned 14 and really want to dance again 😁😁😁

I want to introduce my son to tap dance and this will give him a great foundation to see if he will want to take more classes. Thank you.
Lovely. You're very welcome :)

Awesome video! Best on youtube by far. I need more!
Thanks so much Tanerica! I'm so thrilled you enjoyed it :)
Tanerica Moton if
excellent breakdown of the mechanics. Although I'm 70, I'm eager to learn and don't want to develop bad habits or sloppy techniques as a beginner. I've watched several videos, and this was the only one that mentioned keeping ankle relaxed in the shuffle. what a differnce that made!
Thank you, Faythe! I appreciate your kind comments, and I'm thrilled that you found the video helpful 🙏 happy tapping!
Looking at your leg muscle is already enough for you to be qualified to make videos like these
Haha! I'll take it. Thank you! 🙏
Great vids, I'm 43, have always wanted to try tap and can never find anywhere to learn, this is awesome 😀

My goal in isolation is to learn how to tap. My friend will give me lessons over FaceTime, but I want to learn the basics first. Thanks
Yes! Love this :)
I am considering picking up tap and teaching beginners after over a decade’s break, and it’s really helpful to hear your way of describing the basics! Thank you for a great video 😃
Woohoo! My pleasure. And welcome back to tap dance ☺️
King of New York brought me here.
Good luck! 👊🏻

@@faithlynn1028 yes yes yes! That's great news 👏🏻 All the best!
Really nice and detailed explanation for tap dance.
Sir, you are really an awesome coach.
Looking forward for your updates in youtube
Thank you Arpita! That's very kind, and I'm happy you enjoyed the video.
Me: Practicing it while wearing slippers
Why not? 😉 🙌

I've always adored dancers, but tap dancers were always on a whole other level. I've always been tapping my feet, trying out a little dancing when I was bored, but now I found this channel. I'll definetely will put effort into learning this next to my normal studies. This video alone was fun to work with.
That's lovely to hear Sherry :) happy tapping, and all the best!
This is excellent; incredibly well-explained and demonstrated. I only wish my childhood tap teacher had had your Nobel-level communication skills! It really makes a difference to be able to understand the physiology of it. I've missed tap so much and seeing this has made me feel it's possible to start again. Thank you!
How lovely 🥰 that's wonderful to hear, Polly. Thank you for your kind words - I'm thrilled to hear you're feeling inspired to get back to tap dance! Enjoy the journey 👞 👊🏻
Who else is here just to remember when they were beginners
I love the way you explained the steps and the related movements, it makes so much sense, thank you!
You're welcome Elise!

I do appreciate how you teach without talking down to the viewer. Most of the videos I have found so far have made me feel dumb. Thank you for being an excellent teacher!
Thanks so much! Yes I'm also not a fan of videos that talk down to the viewer. Happy tapping!
Well i'm here after watching KYUNGSOO in swing kids HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
I really wanna learn how to tap dance but I think it may be too late for me to learn since I'm 13 and it would be better if I started as a little kid
It's never too late to start 🙂 I began tap dance when I was 16, and have enjoyed a career in tap dance for my entire adult life. Don't let your age (or anything else) stop you 👊🏻
I had to stop dancing this year for personal reasons and I was devastated. I’m still gonna practice and will not stop
Yes keep going - you got this! :)
Go you!!!
Can I add Dutch Subtitles to your video??? I have a lot of dutch students that do not speak English. And this video would be AMAZING for them!!!
Thanks!
That's wonderful to hear Svea! And such a lovely thing to do with your Grandson. All the very best, and I hope you love the course! :)
plz do upload more tutorials
Thank god, a youtube tap tutorial that talks about the importance of loose ankles from the word go. And starting out with toe heels (probably the most underapreciated step in tap that connects almost any combo or rhythm you have)
Well done.
Thank you for your kind words :) I really appreciate it.
I'm just starting tap in about three days and I'm really nervous so I went on RUclips to try and find some pointers and this video helped me tremendously keep up the good work! And can you please do more tap for beginners you explain it very well
I'm 21 and desperately trying to figure out, as an advanced tap dancer, how to teach tap to beginner highschoolers. Just wanted to let you know how much seeing someone else break it down helps! Thanks for the fantastic video :)
A pleasure! That's wonderful to hear - I'm glad it helps 🙏
Same I’m new to tap
When i was around 10 yrs old....my school had a play and they had me tap dance. All the other kids in my class hated it and kept talking crap....me too. Until i actually started tapdancing....it...felt....good! Really good! Then the play was over and i stayed thinking about tap dancing and how cool it was for years! But it was not popular and i didnt feel motivated.
Now im 37 yrs old and....im ordering a pair of tap dancing shoes. Cant wait! Thanks for the video!
Hooray! Excited for you 🚀
Thank you so much, I'm practicing for 42nd street as Peggy so I'm definitely training myself at home to be a better tap dancer.
That's lovely to hear! All the very best :)
Thanks for such a clear tutorial ! It's really great, ans makes tap dancing very instinctive.
Can we hope to have more of these soon ? ;)
Thank you Sara! That's lovely to hear. Yes I'm hoping to upload more tutorial videos soon :)
My childhood dream was also tap dancing. I bought a pair in a second hand shop. I’m soon 57. My husband laughed until I made up my own moves.😂Today is my first class here at RUclips. I love the sound of my tap shoes. It’s damn hard to be honest! 😅😂
I'm so happy I found this! My work schedule doesn't allow for regular dance classes and I miss tap SO much.
Happy to hear it :) I hope it helps!
This is a very amazing video.Thank you so much for this video. Now I understand how to tap dance with you're heals.Again, thank you for this.
You're most welcome, Sarah! :)
I've just recently been inspired to follow my passion of learning to Tap Dance...... I've spent hours on RUclips watching many beginners video's. I must say that your tutorials are the Best. Very informative, Easy to Follow along with & not feel overwhelmed!!! Thank you. I'm going to keep going because you've made it Easy to learn .💯💯💯
That's fantastic Marsha! Wishing you all the best, and thank you for your kind comments 🙏
This is beyond helpful! I recently got cast in a musical that requires me to do a tap number. I’ve never tapped a day in my life!
How wonderful to hear. Thank you Sarah, and all the best! :)
the ball heel was just doing the griddy
Is 13 too late to join tap dance? I really like it and, being a fan of musicals, I know quite a few songs that have it as part of the routine and it just looks so fun but I'm wondering if you have to start it early or you can start at any age?
It's never too late to start :) I started tap dance when I was 16. I hope you enjoy discovering tap dance!
Go ahead! It is never ever too late.
Nope it’s really and easy kind a dance to start at any age
At 24? ☺️
I used to know how to tap dance and I lost how to do it so I’d like to learn again
Bravo! We totally support this decision 🙂👏🏻
You have inspired me.🤩
Hi Brian! Thank you for your comment - thrilled to hear you appreciated the video and found it helpful. I hope you keep going! Wishing you all the best on the next phase of the adventure! 👞
i may not be a tap dancer, but i love feeling like im in a musical haha its a great feeling. fyi- im primarily a hip hop dancer [which is vague too, as hip hop is a combination of many elements of dance]. aaaaa dance is amazing
