In this video, we’re going to learn one of the most useful and universal combinations of steps in the history of tap dance, the traditional 'Time Step'.
-- Note: This video is 100% relevant for 2024, even though it was published in 2018 --
The ‘Time Step’ has a rich history, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, they pop up everywhere: classes, auditions, shows and films.
There are many different types and variations of the Time Step that have appeared throughout the years, and many of these variations are practiced today.
The ’Traditional Time Step’ that I show you in this video is effectively the ‘Base Pattern’. Once you’ve got this pattern down, learning alternate time step variations becomes a relatively simple task.
A COMMON TIME STEP VARIATION:
(Especially for USA based viewers)
One of the most common alternates involves substituting a Stomp (a flat foot, without weight), or a Stomp-Spank (Spank the toe straight after the Stomp) for the Shuffle on count 8.
It is my hope that this video will give you a flying start toward discovering the Single, Double and Triple Time Steps. I hope it helps. If you enjoy it, please like and share this video, and tell me how you went in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!

What really helps me is to get past the counts and just listen for the raw rhythm to internalize the musicality faster.
BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- it allows your brain to push the movements into the subconscious and focus on the other aspects of your performance.
I'm a ballet and tap teacher, and I must say this is the most precise instruction video I've ever seen. I sent links to my beginners for their home practice. Thanks!
Amazing! Thank you, Christine - we appreciate it ☺🙏
you are a terrific teacher. I watched a lot of different beginner lessons, and after watching this, I decided to get your course and I'm really enjoying it.
Thank you, Faythe! That's lovely to hear. I so appreciate your kind comments. Hope you enjoy the course 🙂
I remember learning this in my tap class when I was about 10 and thinking the words Double Chocolate Chip Muffin in my head to make sure I got the timing right haha
Awesome! Great idea :)
That is helpful!
We did
“I eat eggs,for my break-fast “🤣
We do “I have one chocolate biscuit” and on the breaks; “I have six chocolate biscuits and a cup of tea”
I'm going to be honest I did _not_ think I'd come back here, I've never even considered tap dance before, but now I tried the step and practicing it is so much more fun than I thought?! Thanks for making me try to actually learn this in 2021. You're incredible at explaining in a motivating way.
Yes! 😀 That's so wonderful to hear Arthur. I'm excited for you! There's a world of tap-magic waiting to be discovered ✨
Do stay in touch and let us know how you go! Wishing you all the very best 👞🙏
Hi, I’m 61 years old and I took tap lessons when I was 10 I think. But only a few lessons and it always remained a live for this dance and I always said the one day I would get me a pair of rap shows. Well this Christmas my daughter bought me a pair and here I am to finally learn once and for all how to tap dance. Very happy to have found you well made videos. Thank you so much
Hi Gisèle! That's wonderful to hear - thank you for sharing with us! I'm excited to see where the tap dance journey leads for you. Wishing you all the very best 🙏😀👞
I love this! I am a tap dancer myself and I’m very happy how you mentioned that there are other versions of these time steps, for example the single time step I know is: STOMP BRUSH HOP STEP FLAP STEP STOMP. And the double time step I know is: SHUFFLE HOP TOE STEP FLAP STEP SHUFFLE. The triple time step you showed however is the same as the one I know! Again, I love these videos!
Hooray! 😀
I'm a dance teacher and I love watching videos like this to get new ideas to help teach my students (young kids). Thanks so much! Hope to see more on your youtube channel!
That's great to hear! Thank you :)
Thanks so much! 67 yo here, love that I can take my time, great tutorial.
A pleasure, Robert! All the very best ☺
My goal at 62 is to learn the time step. Thanks for helping me get started. Now shuffling off to my tap class.

That's wonderful to hear :) Thanks so much.
Yay, I just got my first pair of tap shoes in the mail today! 😁❤️
Yeah you did 👊🏻 Happy tapping! 🙂
They featured Sutton Foster's Tony performance of anything goes which is what made me want to learn tap!
Yes! Great number 👏🏻👞
I just start to learn Tap dance, alone at home and you're just perfect for this ! Keep going !
Thank you! :)
Thank you for your simple explanation.
As a 51 year old who learned and taught Latin and Modern Ballroom from age 8, and obviously being in complete awe of Fred Astaire, I'm finally learning tap.
I'm blown away at how different, including your starting step is, we always started on or after 1.
How did Fred seamlessly mash tap and modern together? I'm hoping to have the answer once I've learned the basics (again!) and can choreograph myself.
Many thanks, subscribed!
I am so glad i found your tutorial. You are doing tremendous work Sir! The tap shoes are on the way and while i am waiting for them to arrive I practice in my flip flops in the living room. Honestly that s what I love about our times, as hard as it gets specially recently there always are good people willing to share their knowledge so that we can all learn from each other. Picking up new hobbies has never been easier! Greetings from Poland. Love.
Thank you, thank you! I so appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you found the video too 🙏
Yes - I agree - it's a wonderful thing that we get to share and learn from each other in this way ❤️ Thank you again - all the very best! 👞🌅
Love this! I have always learnt it : Shuffle hop spring tap front back (for single)
I liked how the time step is taught in this video, there are others that teach it in different variations which I am having a hard time with. But this one is simple for me to understand and I’m starting to perform it very quickly now
Matthew, that's wonderful to hear! Thank you for your kind comment - I'm thrilled the video has been helpful for you 🙏
Yes I know what you mean about the different variations. So many of them!
last time i took tap lessons i was 4 years old and i got a hand me down pair of tap shoes recently and it’s really nice to do again :]
Woo! 😀
Those lessons were really helpful, I am 21 and I never took dancing lessons before, but I think that your's videos and a little bit of practice every day, makes me better and better. Thanks for learning me how to TAP!
I find its best for me to write down the combination. Then I can go at my own pace. Ive learned many steps. I have about 6 pairs of shoes Ive gotten at the thrift shops. (Maybe I can get a friend to tap w me)This is so good for getting my body & mind moving. Im also working on ballet & the French language. Gotta stay busy during pandemic.
Yes! Great that you've found the best way for you. Happy tapping 🙌 🙂
I did tap dancing for years, up until very recently, and I mainly watched this video because I had changed schools at one point and the timestep at the new school was completely different... The first one taught off a syllabus, and was exactly the same as this (except we also had a "basic" timestep without the shuffle and the double didn't have a flap, but a tap instead so it was only one extra beat) and now I'm happy to know that I was taught the usual way the first time 😂
And I loved the tutorial, even though it felt strange to me listening to you describe the difference between a flap and a shuffle because for me, I already knew all that stuff by the time I learned timesteps, and I forgot there are other people out there who start with no knowledge at all 😂 (which is still great btw guys keep at it)
Thanks Brianna! All the very best on the tap dance adventure :)
Thank you. I am enjoy your lessons.
Helpful dancers and teachers.
So clear and clean to understand.
Yes!! another update! And again your videos are so well told step by step with history in mind as well. Thank you!! I'm getting my shoes soon and I can't wait to try your videos out!
Thank you Coco! :) I'm thrilled you like the videos.
I taught myself in my living room today and accomplished it. I’m quite proud of myself 😊
You have the best tap videos ever!!
Thanks so much Sue - I'm thrilled you liked the video :)
Your videos are just fantastic! I’m a musician, dancer, and teacher, but NOT a tap dancer…LOL. Your useful teaching methods, musical theory explanations, and movement descriptions are really helping this come together for me!
That's fantastic to hear - thanks so much for the comment! All the best for the journey 🥰
Thank you, I’m trying to get Cathy Seldon in Singing in the Rain and I’m very dedicated. I’ve been practicing with your vids everyday, I’m new to tap so it’s a journey. I better get that role.
All the best! ✨

Hi Bill, Thanks to this video, I just signed up for your Intermediate to Advanced course 🥰. I like your teaching method, now I hope I'll be a better tap dancer 🤩
Woohoo! That's awesome, Emilie 😀 Looking forward to seeing you in the course🙌
As an old hoofer myself, I'm loving this very clear breakdown of classic tap steps! I wonder if there's a dedicated channel to just time steps? The first one I learned was the Buck, which starts with a stomp, then a spank (leaving heel down from the stomp). I think it's the one that many non-tap entertainers imitate but without the spank. I teach my beginner students this one as their first, then adding to make a double, triple and double triple. Like you said, there are bazillions of variations, and that's what makes these so much fun!
That's lovely to hear - thank you! Yes so many Time Step variations :) I don't think there's a channel dedicated to time steps though...
I have been doing tap for 12 years now but this helped me to neaten up my time steps - especially my triples as I have a tendancy to shuffle slightly sideways
That's great to hear Abby! Glad it helps :)
really happy to see that youve posted a new video. hope you continue.
Thanks Annabelle! :)
i'm doing a high school production of anything goes with little to no tap experience and this helped SO much
Woo! Glad to hear it 💪🏻 all the best for the show! ✨
Love this-so clear! Thank you
A pleasure! 🥰
Thank you for this video. I celebrate my 60th bday very soon n I want to begin tapping. I’ll first explore n learn basic steps, with a goal of getting the time step down too.
Hooray! All the best, and happy birthday :)
Great im a oap who after doing a lot of sport over the years not long stated ballroom and latin classes ive always been a big fan of Donald OConner Vera Allen Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly so always wanted to get at least the basics down As a musician i know how important the basic patterns and drills are thankyou
A pleasure! :)
hate timesteps. I have to teach myself them in order to do my exams in November, and this has actually helped me. thank you so much for teaching me something, something that my teacher never did. thank you.
You're welcome! Glad it helps ☺

This is an excellent video! I'm recommending it to all my beginner students!
Hooray! Thanks Liz - thrilled you liked the video :)
I got confused when watching as I start with a stamp and do buck not standard timestep😂 Great video!
Yes - that's a very common variation 🙂 Effectively though, both are based around the same base-pattern. Hope the video helped 🙌
This is so interesting I'm trying to get back into tap after stopping for many years and the substitution for the stomp surprised me lol
I like the way it sounds though without it!!! 😊
Yes! The 'Stomp' on count 8 is a common alternative 🙂
TYSMMM I AM A TAP DANCER AND I NEEDED A LITTLE HELP WITH THIS AND NOW I GOT IT TYSMM

It's like watching Fred Astaire in slow motion. I always wondered how in the world he did that.
In 3 weeks I have to do a signing/ acting audition, over the past month or so I've been attempting to teach myself tap with a few lessons and tons of practice at home, your videos are definitely helping me out!
That's great to hear! Good luck for the audition :)
Barrett Bruce same as me! I have an audition and as an extra part, we can go for lead dancers which include tap so I’m trying to learn as much as I can
How did it go?
Nice tutorial. Useful and understandable. Thanks a lot!
Thanks Milo! You're very welcome :)

Great channel!!! good editing and video cuts! 👍👍👍
Thank you! 😀🙏
Gracias by Felicidades 🙏
¡Hola!

Hi there, just found ya.
....Hoping you make more videos🥰💚
Thank you! Yes more are on the way :)

All the best!
Great video.
Thank you! :)
Nice!
Please continue making these
Glad you like them :) more coming soon!
I’m very much a beginner and one of my friends wants to do the opening number to 42nd street for out senior cabaret (we are currently juniors). He’s really good so he’s been figuring out the choreography just by slowing down the video and figuring out the steps. For some strange reason the man thinks that I will be able to do it (we’ll see) so he told me to learn how to do single, double, and triple time steps, to start. I may or may not have laid on the floor in exhaustion. This is gonna take some time 😂😂
Nice! Yes it's a tricky one when you're first learning it, but it's like riding a bicycle - once you've got it, you've got it forever 🙂 good luck!
Hi there. This is great for my beginner tappers to practice. Thank you so much. A 'tap spring, toe hop' (do you all call that a 'flap, toe hop?) would be so useful. Keep those vids coming! x
Thanks so much - I'll keep that in mind for another video :)
Well done
Thanks Diane! 🙏
I just discovered your videos and they are excellent! No more? :(
Thank you! We're hoping to create more soon :)
It took watching this video like 7 times just to understand the flap but it's amazing. I now can do it but it's very slow.thanks
You're welcome! 🙂
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Exellent tutorials!
Thanks so much - glad you like them :)
btw. I am working on a video for a top 5 hardest (top 5 hardest tap moves of all time)
What moves do YOU think are really hard!?
Oooo...good question! I'll have a think about it. There's a few jumping tricks that come to mind, as well as that tricky 3 beat shuffle (not sure if it has a name!).
The 3 beat shuffle is actually one of my specialties. Its called a "Super-Shuffle" (not kidding)!
I also mastered a 4 beat super-shuffle, and have created my own variation, a 5 beat super shuffle
That last one (the 5 beat) is on the list :-)
besides that I'm definitely putting the "Pullback+ wing combo alternated" as one of the hardest moves there are.
And of course... Colin Dunne's quadrouple airheel clap that I've never seen ANYONE else but him do!! Yikes!!!
p.s
I teach my students the time step the same way you do. but after the 3rd, I add a double 3rd where BOTH feet do triplets
and after that I do a 4th time step variation where we do the "supershuffle 4 beat". and ofcourse double 4 where BOTH feet do 4 beat super shuffles... its hard as heck!
+Cirque-it Is there an online resource for learning the super shuffle do you know please? Thanks
Can honestly say I’ve never learned it this way.
Thank you for your honesty ☺️
There are plenty different versions out there. Which one did you learn?
