  • How to TAP DANCE for Beginners, with Just TAP.
In this video, I talk about the crucial principles of going faster with tap dance, and some super simple secrets to help propel your tap dance to the next level, and seriously pick up the pace!
In tap dance, we all want to take steps faster (or at least be able to take steps faster), because after all, in terms of overall technical proficiency, our goal is simple: to achieve a range of different steps at a range of speeds, and then increase that range over time.
Although the principles of speeding up in tap dance are essentially quite simple, they can be tricky to wrap your head around. So bear with me, and I’ll explain it as clearly as I can.

Thank you so much for this series! I'm a college student who has been dancing for 17 years, but primarily in ballet and jazz with barely any tap experience. I was thrown into a tap class, and now thanks to you I'm feeling much more comfortable being out of my element, and I'm looking forward to learning more with your next videos!

Hello, 🙂 my name is Diane. My father is Steve Condos.
I love your clear exacting approach. When I'm teaching I call the weight shift a "Swaying Transfere". Yes is is crucial to teach. Otherwise you'll never get clarity ìn speed. I ask students to dance with "intention" and clarity... otherwise you're just making noise. 🙂
    Kudos to you

Hello Diane! Thank you so much for commenting - it's an honor and a pleasure to make your acquaintance, and I'm truly touched by your words 🙂
Your father is such an inspiration to me, and to so many tap dancers across the world ❤️ such an amazing (and mind-blowing!) artist - he contributed so much to the art form. We're forever grateful.
Thank you again Diane. It means a lot 🙏

I'm a student of hula (Hawaiian) dancing for almost 10 years (formally started that since March 2014) and ballroom dancing for more than 6 years (formally started in late November of 2017) with almost no experience with tap dancing other than watching others perform. This is so interesting and I'm going to discover how fast I can pick up all the tap dance basics self-paced at home (as a start) as soon as I buy my first pair of tap dance shoes. Thank you for your videos on RUclips. Much appreciated and Happy New Year!!! :)

As you were talking about “Weight Placement”, it reminded me of when I was learning to drive my husband’s standard transmission truck. If the feet are not correctly coordinated, the vehicle goes nowhere. This applies to tap dancing too!

This looks good, but you completely skipped over *how* to get your legs to relax enough to speed up - I'm generally pretty stiff and whenever I try doing anything fast my legs just seize up and it's hard to do *anything*. I've tried asking people for advice about this but their responses are generally rather unhelpful along the lines of "have you tried not having tense legs and ankles?" If you could give any pointers for the chronically stiff amongst us that would be great!

Hi Chris! Thanks for your question. It's a tricky one to answer, as physiology is different from person to person (it may be worth visiting a physiotherapist for a more tailored approach), but in overall terms of relaxing and increasing range of movement, one of the most important things is to ensure you're properly warmed up prior to dancing. Also, gently stretching the muscles and building flexibility over time is also very helpful. Aside from that, one of the most effective techniques I've found is to tense the muscle group as much as you can, and then consciously focus on releasing them (repeat this 5-10 times each session, trying to relax a little more each time). I hope this helps - all the best! 🙂🙌
