    A summer garden party in 1920s Calcutta - Indian high society enjoy themselves at a Calcutta garden party held to welcome the new Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
    This film gave Indian cinema audiences the chance to rub shoulders with India's elite and catch a glimpse of the men who ruled their country - and their families. We see not one but two Viceroys: Lord Irwin (shown in the first table shots) became Viceroy in April 1926 after Lord Lytton (who was Governor of Bengal and is seen in the second table shot) filled the post on a temporary basis.
    The party was held at Belvedere House, the Viceregal residence before India's capital was moved from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911. While we can name the key British figures in the film, the identity of the Indian guests is unknown, nor does the film identify them.
    The film was likely to have been made by Madan Theatres Ltd., an Indian cinema chain. Later shots show Lady Dorothy Wood (Irwin's wife) and Lytton's wife Pamela as well as their children, Ann Wood and Anthony and Davina Bulwar-Lytton, who are seated at a 'children's table' along with an Indian royal prince. In spite of these festivities, Irwin's period as viceroy was not easy as he oversaw intense Indian protests for further political devolution and was forced to negotiate with Gandhi to bring the nationwide Civil Disobedience movement to an end.

    This is a really great piece of history, the Indian lady at 1.10 and 2.28 is now other than the Maharani Indira devi of Cooch Behar ,she was the daughter off the Gaekwar of Baroda and married one of the princes off Cooch Behar how would become Maharaja after his elder brother died. Indira devi was also the mother off Gayatri devi how married the Maharaja off Jaipur. The royal family of Cooch Behar owned property in Kolkata (Calcutta) named 'Woodlands' wich was just across the street from 'Belvedere' the Viceroys official residence.

      It was the betrayal of erstwhile maharajas that destroyed rich India and made Britishers what they are today. Had there not been India during 2nd world war, Britain would have been in mess till today

    I am from kolkata , I stay near Alipore, I have passed several times beside Belvedere place but did not know the history of it. Viceroy and once governor of Bengal had stayed there . Presently if I am not wrong , DGP of Bengal owns this place.Still it is a resitricted place to the common people.

      @ technlogy Belvedere palace was constructed around 1760 and once resided by Warren Hastings, first de facto Governor-General of Bengal . From 1854 to 1911 the Belvedere housed a number of lieutenant governors. In 1926 I am not sure about its status but most likely it was office of Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. The main building seen in the video is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India. It's not the residence of DGP.
      The complex now includes within it, two housing colonies built by the government, one being for National Library of India employees, and the other for central government employees. Presently the major portion of the Belvedere Estate houses National Library of India. While a small portion (the housing complex built later) of Belvedere Estate is being used as residential complex for senior Central Government employees.

    After seeing this video I appreciate todays India even more. In this video we get to see some of the most modern women of India who have been brought up with british culture. Today we get to see all the women are almost the same modern. Considering the fact at that time she was very rare than other women in India. India has come a long way since then when our people are just not only mare coolies and manual labour but are in executive positions.

    • @lgopalakrishnan3181
      @lgopalakrishnan3181 3 года назад

      @Nidhi Roy I used to haunt the National Library (NL) in my teens (and several years after as well). The NL functioned from the main erstwhile Viceregal mansion during those days (since then an annex has been constructed in the ghastly modern style and the library now mostly functions from there). It was a place of spacious rooms, lofty ceilings, cosy alcoves with tables and chairs where 2 people at most could sit and read and it was like entering a different world once you went inside. Even during the hottest of days the interior was cool and relaxing. And of course there was the massive treasure of NL's book collection to draw upon. You had to make a written book requisition, drop it in a tray, wait for the slips to go down to the subterranean depths where the books were actually stored, wait in trepidation for the books to come up (sometimes not too unoften the slips merely came with the sad notation 'N/F' meaning Not Found) and then grab the book/s, retire to your cosy nook, immerse yourself in reading and forget the world. How many happy delightful hours I have spent in the NL. Alas! those days will never return. I hope you get to visit the Belevedere and it is open to visitors but I only wish you could capture the atmosphere as it used to be years ago.

    • @lgopalakrishnan3181
      @lgopalakrishnan3181 3 года назад

      @Nidhi Roy As far as I know the newspapers stored in the NL are preserved in microfilm form. Some hard copies are stored in the rare books section of the library. Getting access to the material stored in the rare books section is difficult - I believe only accredited researchers or those with high academic credentials are permitted to access them. Unfortunately the storage conditions at the NL are deplorable for three reasons - insufficient budget, poor storage facilities & lack of proper equipment and insufficiently trained staff who do not know how to use the equipment already purchased. There was a somewhat recent newspaper article about the NL that said: "The newspapers are kept in small racks meant for books, which leaves part of them hanging out. As these papers are old and brittle should be preserved more carefully." If you have handled an old newspaper you will know how fragile it can be. The slightest jerk or hasty handling can make pages snap or even break into little pieces. Usually what they do is encase each page in transparent sheets that holds the page together but permits reading; the NL has not been able to complete this for all newspapers yet. The best way to read old newspapers is to access the digital versions. Unfortunately, in India there is no online resource (to the best of my knowledge) where such digital versions of all old Indian newspapers are available to the public. In fact I believe very few old newspapers have been digitised. Google and Indian Express have done some pioneering work in this area. For example news.google.com/newspapers?nid=P9oYG7HA76QC gives access to the digital versions of some (NOT all) issues of the Indian Express covering the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's etc. I am a member of the British Newspaper Archive which gives me access to old newspapers published in Great Britain beginning from as early the 1700's And I find it fascinating to read some of the old issues covering great events like the World Wars etc. And yes we should stop complaining about the colonial past and look to see how to improve our future - I agree with you there. The British did both good and bad - "The men who ruled India by by Philip Mason" gives you insight into some of the great British officials and Viceroys and how they administered the country when we were ruled by Britain. Sorry if I have bored you with such a long reply.

    • @lgopalakrishnan3181
      @lgopalakrishnan3181 3 года назад

      @Nidhi Roy We usually manage to do the things we really want to do if they are reasonably achievable. When you visit Belvedere take note of the greenery and the huge trees - some of which are hundreds of years old. Incredibly stupid people cut down some of these old trees to construct the new buildings for the library annexes but there are still some grand old trees around. All the best!

    Glad to see that Hitler and Tojo's respective armies put an end to this exploiting imperialism and with the cherry on the top: MK Gandhi 20 or so years from this "tea party" event. That harami Lord Irwin (Halifax) lived to see it all end.
