I understand the south coast has a very active gay community so maybe the police have to make sure they employ a ‘diverse’ workforce. That might explain the approach they adopted eg getting very close to you, their very intimate face to face contact, wanting your name and contact details, asking what they can to do for you, where you will hanging out later (I made that last one up), etc etc.

You backed off numerous times. I suspect the first time was to try and deescalate to situation. The constable continued to harass you AND by invading your personal space threatened violence and intimidation.
Intimidation IS an indictable offence, and under law civilians have the powers of arrest. This of course would be almost impossible when facing 3 assailants.
There is also NO RULE IN LAW that a person being being harassed and intimidated must wait until they are struck before defending themselves (R v Deana, 2 Cr App R 75). You repeatedly backed away, and the Constable entered your personal space on more than 2 occasions. In these situations you are allowed to preemptively take reasonable action to defend yourself and try to dissuade the person further committing offences.
