  • Take a rare inside look at Wilt Chamberlain's incredible Bel Air mountain-top mansion dubbed "Ursa Major" (Big Dipper) detailed by none other than Wilt Chamberlain himself. This was recorded just prior to his 2nd NBA Championship April 10th 1972.

i was fortunate to sit next to Mr. Chamberlain on the sand of Main Beach of Laguna Beach in the mid 70's. He was quiet, I offered him a bear and said"be cool with it" and he smiled. When he got uñ to leave and folded his huge beach chair, he shook my hand and thanked me. He was a gentleman.

Jackass. That home was built and designed with special features, not the least of which was that Wilt wanted people of average height to feel completely at ease. The house was also designed without one right angle. By the way: the cost was 1.5 million, and he paid 90% cash because he was a wise investor.

Wilt did not like the monniker "Wilt the Stilt", but he did like the lesser used "Big Dipper". He once said he considered himself "a normal person" and pointed out that he was only a foot taller than someone of "average" height, he must have meant the normal range up to about 6'3". He liked his pad, that's for sure. But on the street in L.A. he never forgot his roots in the world of the American common man. He was known to stand in line for movie tickets and wait his turn for a table at a restaurant. I saw him once on the street in the L.A. area, late on a weekday evening on Santa Monica Boulevard, He was alone apparently getting something out of his car.
He was one of two Hall of Fame centers I have seen on the street. The other one was Bill Walton pedaling around Palo Alto late at night during the time he attended Stanford law. Walton completed the program but never practiced law. I played in one pickup game in my life with NBA players in it. One was a center who had played on a championship team but he was not Hall of Fame. I was not a very skilled player but I moved around very well in my young days and even at 5'10" was not that intimidated. But you do realize quite quickly that you are overmatched. Fortunately, no small point guard in the game. I have seen them close up and they are absolute magicians. You could not hope to compete against them.

Wilt was knowledgeable is so many areas, basketball was just part of who he was, certainly was not everything he was. His appreciation of America is not something famous people embrace in 2021, as he said he traveled the world, he had a wide perspective and his conclusion: America is the best country in the world and he was thankful to be from the USA.

Can you please post a video of Wilt throwing down really powerful dunks. Kareem used to throw down some bangers in the early and mid 70's.
