It is a testament to Wilt's athleticism, basketball savvy and talent that he spotted his "peer" an entire decade in career years and still pushed Jabbar to his competitive limits.

Kareem came into the league in 1969/70. Wilt suffered a major injury in 1969/70 and only played 12 regular season games. He came back from injury too early and it hampered his play but he still averaged 47 minutes a game during the playoffs and 22 points and 22 rebounds a game. Kareem's 3 best years; 71,72,73, were statistically Wilt's 3 worst years. Even still during those 3 years, Kareem won a championship and so did Wilt.
I thought that from 1971-73 Wilt basically played Kareem to a draw overall, even though his scoring numbers were far below Kareem’s. Remember, Wilt was like the 4th option on offense for the Lakers, while Kareem was expected to score 30 points a game for the Bucks. He was their main man on offense. Wilt was not. Wilt still outplayed Kareem on the boards and as a rim protector.
@@frederickrapp5396 I was born in 1963 and started watching the NBA in 1971. The Milwaukee Bucks were my favorite team even though I lived in Washington state. You're right about Wilt in those last few years. He was basically the third option with Jimmy McMillian also being the third option, both McMillian and Chamberlain could score 20-30 points if needed. Wilt could have been a more go to option offensively but Jerry West and Gail Goodrich would both average 25 plus points during the 1971-72 season. Between 1970-71 through 1972-73, the Bucks and the Lakers were the most dominate teams. Unfortunately, they both played in the Western Conference, so they could never play each other in the finals. To me, the NBA was at it's best in the early 70s. The Knicks, Celtics, and Bullets in the East with the Lakers, Bucks, and a bunch of other teams that were very good in the West like Golden State, the Bulls, and the Suns. Wilt was even in those last few years still a great rebounder, shot blocker, and a great passer (distributer). Those were the days....sure do miss them.
@@tommurphy2746 Do you remember the game on Sunday 1-9-72 when the Bucks ended the Lakers 33 game winning streak? I remember watching this game on the NBA game of the week on ABC. True story: Lakers were not highly regarded at start of season by most experts. Bucks, Knicks, Celtics, were all considered much superior to Lakers. Baylor retired early in season. When Lakers started season at 6-3, I looked at their roster and said: “This team is loaded. They should win the NBA title. Macmillan will take over at small forward, and Baylor won’t be missed.” I did a player-player comparison with the world champion Bucks. Wilt-Kareem: even. West-Robertson: even. Dandridge-Macmillan: even. Goodrich-McGlocklin: slight edge Goodrich, Hairston-Perry: slight edge Hairston, Bench: slight edge Lakers, Coach: Sharman-Costello: even. I never thought Lakers would win 33 games in a row. But even when they started at 6-3, I thought they were slightly better than World Champion Bucks. And I was proven correct!
@@frederickrapp5396 Yeah, I remember that epic, nationally televised game on 1-9-72. That was one of my favorite all-time games. That 33-game winning streak was incredible. I still have a 20th year anniversary Sports Illustrated commemorative issue honoring that winning streak. It has a summary to every one of the 33 games and the score and the leading scorers. The Lakers averaged 125 points per game during that streak if I remember correctly. In fact, most of the 33 games were not even close, the Lakers were dominating during that streak. Wilt said that most streaks are usually predicated on some luck being involved. But like he said, there were only a few close games during that streak. The Lakers were 39-3 and the Bucks were I believe 36-5 coming into that epic matchup. That game was uploaded on RUclips. I've rewatched it. I think the Bucks pulled away at the end and won 120-104. Ironically, the Bucks had a 20 game winning streak the year before. Also, during the same time the Lakers were on their 33 game winning streak, John Wooden's U.C.L.A. Bruins were in the midst of the longest men's college basketball winning streak of all-time wich would end up being an 88 game winning streak. They finally lost to Notre Dame on national television when they blew a late lead. What's so interesting about the Lakers and U.C.L.A Bruins winning streaks is that the Lakers 33 game winning streak is the longest in pro sports history and still stands to this day, and the Bruins winning 88 game winning streak also stands to this day, and I don't think neither will ever be broken. What's fascinating about those two streaks is they were going on at the same time and in the same city of L.A.. What are the odds of that happening. Those were the good old days, sports were so much fun to watch back then. It's just not the same anymore. The NBA game today is so boring to watch....teams do nothing but shoot 3 pointers the whole game with 3 or 4 players standing behind the 3 point line waiting to hoist up another three. No low post game or midrange shots anymore. The old NBA was a much better game. I sure do miss those days.

A better argument would be the average weight has increased (which is true by about 10Lb) and you might have had a point. I would counter that Wilt was freakishly strong so the increase in weight wouldn’t matter as much.

Unfortunately, Wilt took a hard elbow to his jaw and teeth in the 60s. Wilt knocked the dude out with a jab but the damage was done and he had teeth issues for the rest of his life. Wilt had a root canal that went bad and he died about a year later.

I love seeing Wilt hit all the hook shots at the end. That guy was a monster athlete. He would dominate any of today's players. Kareem would also do exceedingly well today because he took his height and made an unstoppable force out of himself with the Sky Hook. Impossible to defend in any era. These guys were beasts.

After being thoroughly outplayed by Kareem in the first 2 games of the 1972 WCF, Wilt took it up several notches on defense. Chamberlain shut out Abdul-Jabbar in the last 11 minutes of Game 3, he blocked 33 shots in the last 4 games of the series, and held the league MVP to a miserable .414 from the field. The Big Dipper was clutch in the last 2 games of the series. In Game 5, he was 8-8 from the free throw line and Jerry West stated that Wilt's Game 6 performance was, "the greatest ball busting performance I've ever seen."

Another detail I have checked out... Wilt had so many games of plus 80. pts + rbs. There are only a handful of players that achieved that once or twice in their whole career. Wilt did that close to 100 times. so many monster games! Russell did slow Wilt down offensively now and then, its to be expected, but overall, he was rarely more effective than anyone else. Wilt is in a category like Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretsky, and maybe Jim Brown. just another level that no one else comes close. Plus he was a nice guy and gave away millions, helped a lot of people.

For the most part, Russell had no answers against the Big Dipper's offensive arsenal which included fadeaway jumpers, finger rolls, dunks, and baseline reverse layups. After completing the greatest playoff run in post-season history (e.g., 15 playoff games 21.7 PTS, 29.1 REBS, 9.0 ASTS, 9.2 BLKS) and winning his 1st NBA title, Wilt's 7 year playoff stat line reads 30.4 PTS, 27.0 REBS, 4.5 ASTS, and .515 from field. That insane stat line was compiled over the course of 67 playoff games and came at the expense of 3 time all-star center Johnny Red Kerr, HOF center Bill Russell, HOF center Zelmo Beaty, 4 time all-star center Wayne Embry, HOF center Nate Thurmond, and mediocre center Connie Dierking.
Legend has it after the second loss Wilt kicked the coaches out of the locker room and Wilt read the riot act to the team. After that he was a man possessed.

Kareem is now the best center in the league, but I have the better teammates, so let's win this thing now and not let it get to a 7th game.

I don’t think the NBA will ever see anything like Wilt in his prime. Some of the videos of him in his prime with the warriors were crazy. He actually took it easy lots of games on dunks because he knew he’d break people’s arms. Lot of games he was effortlessly scoring 50. He was a man among boys.

Growing up watching MJ, we didn’t have access to watch this. Wilt Chamberlain was a monster
I saw them both play several times. My nod is to WIlt as he had the complete game for a center. He ran well, more athletic, better stamina, better passer, better rebounder, better career ppg and rpg. The game changed more because of him vs Kareem (not to take away how great a player Kareem was). And if Wilt had a hook-shot in his repertoire, there would be no debate.

Absolutely. Bird and Magic was a 'rivalry' because they were complete opposites of each other. Perfect marketing. In reality, they were just the two best players in the league. But they didn't play the same position and battle each other every possession. Chamberlain had to go through Bill Russell and KAJ to win rings. Players in the same position.
Michael and Kobe would have been the best comparison to Wilt and Kareem. But Kobe never faced Michael in the play-offs. Would have been great to see those guys compete on that level.

Great Video...If Wilt was alive today , he would have been a major media star...he was well spoken, funny and Sophisticated...men wanted to be him ,women wanted to be with him...I'm 68 and Wilt is in my top 5 of Athletes that I wanted to listen to anything he was talking about ...Race cars ,track and field , Women Volleyball on the beach in LA...his house on Mulholland dr was built for him with 9 ft doors and his pool was outside but you could swim to the inside of the house...The Man had a Giant personality and wanted sophisticated finer things in life...He took a young introverted Kareem to exposed him to those things like Jazz...Kareem was his protégé...RIP Wilt you always bring a smile to my face !

What struck me watching this video was how well spoken Wilt was when he was being interviewed. He sounded like a really intelligent guy. Kareem has that reputation too. It probably really helped that those guys spent the whole four years in college back then. When you compare them to the guys in the league today there's no contest. Ball players these days mostly sound like morons. Wilt and Kareem sound like scholars!
A historic anecdote that is not well known. I attended the infamous Lakers "Game 7" in 1969, the last time Wilt and Russell faced each other. At halftime, as the players trudged into the tunnel, standing right in front of it was a network reporter interviewing just-graduated [and NCAA winning] UCLA senior Lew Alcindor. It so happened that Wilt and Russell arrived at the entrance at the same instant, and they both stopped a few feet in front of Alcindor. All three legendary big men stood and glared at each other for a silent moment, and then walked on into history.
@David Mutchler Hard to say, and I was at least 75 feet away, so could not hear if any of them said anything. Maybe it was just surprise on both of the old guys' parts at unexpectedly seeing the one player they knew was at their level, right in their house. I also think this was at a time when Kareem and Wilt had developed a bit of animosity toward each other. They had been friends when Kareem was 14, but he would have been around 22.

@David Mutchler Russell was actually 1/4 inch taller than Hakeem, and even better on defense, though not as gifted on offense. Up until age 37, young Hakeem could not really handle Kareem, though from age 38 on, "Grandpa" Kareem was not really a match for prime Hakeem.

Wilt was better but he was past his prime by the time that Kareem came into the league. Had they been closer in age, Kareem would've been forgotten about cause Wilt would've done everything to embarrass him and cause separation like the last clip in that epic duel. Wilt was just a super human athlete.

But i loved Wilt Chamberlain so much. Even though i wasn't even born at the time when he died, he always is an inspiration to me in playing Basketball and playing on a Power Forward position. He is truly the BLACK SUPERMAN

I had the honor of seeing Chamberlain in person, twice. Both games they couldn't touch him. He was just so powerful and quicker than you would expect from someone that size. He and West were MY heroes. I loved West's jumper, so smooth and effortless, I copied it when I played.
I felt the same way, Wilt was my favorite center and I patterned my game after Mr Clutch, especially his quick jumper. I loved watching that '72 Laker team!
West had the quickest release on a jump shot in the NBC.

Excellent video, thanks. Wilt and Kareem are the two most dominant center I've ever seen play and the most dominant was Wilt. Kareem's sky hook was damn near impossible to stop though, and he gave Wilt fits. But that game that Wilt led the Lakers past the Bucks was so clutch. The thing was, you never wanted to make Wilt mad and you didn't want to wake the normally even keel motivation of Wilt even if he was at the end of his career and dealing with the after math of some serious knee issues. Remember this: no player has ever had a season in which he averaged 30 ppg and 20 rpg. Wilt averaged 30 and 20 for his career.

Prime Wilt had the unstoppable fadeaway on the left low block, the Dipper finger roll, the easy hook shot, and the powerful Dipper Dunk that nobody was blocking. Wilt was a better shot blocker and rebounder. Much respect to Wilt and Jabbar, both great players.
I agree. Great comment. Rebounding is 2nd in importance, after scoring. Wilt out rebounded everybody, by a significant amount, except Bill Russel was a fairly close 2nd. I like to keep stating that for the Wilt Haters out there.

Biggest problem, you were more apt to sprain an ankle, but the Nikes didn't entirely prevent that, either. The thick, padded soles, raised your foot considerably, which could take away some from the ankle support, compared to the Converse All Stars. There was a little trade off there. Just saying.

Kareem always played in Adidas; low-tops at that [hidden wisdom of John Wooden?]. Interesting, given his amazing longevity. Wilt played his whole career in CHUCKS. Weighing 293 in 1964, and 310-315 pounds during the Laker years; Yikes- a man that size, jumping that high, year after year, no wonder he was done after a little over 1,000 games. Imagine if Wilt just got to wear 1985-vintage Air Jordans [OK- Air Wilts], not to mention the high-tech, fully-custom shoes worn in today's NBA. Given his amazing physical attributes, he could easily have played 20 or more relatively injury-free seasons.

"Why don't you go to Harvard kid? And then I'll be able to pick you off in the territorial draft for the Celtics." However, Wilt went to Kansas. Russell was drafted in 1956, while Chamberlain was drafted in 1959, so imagine Russell and Chamberlain as teammates, along with all of those other Hall of Fame Boston Celtic players.

I wish my grandpa was around to witness our Bucks’ return to greatness. He loved basketball and loved the Milwaukee Bucks. He came to befriend a lot of Bucks players at the time as they would often lived nearby, and they’d even attend the house parties he’d throw. He got to witness the Bucks winning their first championship, and 50 years later I’d get to witness their second championship.

Loved how you put Hakeem in there in terms of being the next great big to take the torch from Wilt to Kareem and from Kareem to him and it was passed from Hakeem to Shaq who was the last truly dominant NBA center.

Edit: Just rewatched it and I didn't understand just how much effort was put into this particular vid. A lot of hard work went into compiling all this footage (from the college days of Wilt to interviews on both men today) and some of the videos and pictures being remastered. Also the whole story of their rivalry as a mentor and protege in Harlem, to fierce competitors in the NBA and then as elder statesmen who respected one another all wrapped into one video, a masterclass video about both titans. I remember listening to Chick call these games when I was 10/11 years old. I hated Kareem and the Bucks in 1971. And Wilt was incredible in 1972. 37 years old. Of course, I came to love Kareem later!

Kudos to the person or persons who constructed this incredibly impressive video. It is a balanced presentation of a rivalry between 2 of the 5 greatest players in NBA history. I especially love the section where Jordan's Bulls have no answer for a good team with a great center. Imagine the problems Jordan's 1996-1998 Bulls would have had with a GREAT team with a great center. For example, Wilt's 66-67 76ers, Kareem's 70-71 Bucks, Wilt's 71-72 Lakers, and Kareem's 85-86 Lakers would have been nightmare matchups for the 1996-1998 Bulls.
Thank you! Yes that part of the video I also try to point out just how good Wilt and Kareem were too by using Hakeem as an example as he clearly dominated the Bulls in the early 90's. Kareem seemed to be giving him trouble in his late 30's... and older Wilt had to defend prime Kareem. Amazing.
The bulls never had a good center, let alone great during the mj era. So naturally the likes of longley, cartwright and past prime bigs would be no match. Hell magic shaq had his way lol.
A true big man really only have himself to worry about. Between shaq, hakeem, kareem and wilt. None of them can stop the other. The greatest bulls would lose to other great teams. But get some wins as well. They were fortunate to be dominant in a declining big man era. While having the best guard in a growing guard era
@@Jiron127You make several excellent points and I would add that the worst matchup for Jordan's Bulls would be the 1966-1967 76ers. One can argue that the 1986 Celtics had the greatest front line in NBA history, but the most physically imposing front line to ever play resided in Philadelphia. The 290 pound Chamberlain, 270 pound Luke Jackson, and 230 pound Chet Walker dominated the NBA in the mid-late 60's and they would dominate the NBA in 2021. If you add Billy Cunningham off the bench, you have a front line that would be the Bull's kryptonite.

Since they'd be up against super teams of the 60-80's. So trading for hakeem or shaq would be the move to go with mj.
@@Jiron127 I agree. Today's NBA is stocked with terrific athletes whose basketball skills are generally one-dimensional. The all around player is no longer a centerpiece of today's NBA landscape. That landscape consists of very good guards/small forwards, good power forwards, and mediocre centers. In terms of mythical matchups, the 1991-1993 threepeat Bulls were 1-6 against Hakeem's Rockets, so those who believe that the Bulls would defeat any of the super teams of the 60-80's are borderline delusional. The 1996-1998 threepeat Bulls would have had a better shot of defeating some of those 60-80's super teams, but due to Longley's limited skill set, Rodman would have been required to play some center. Longley and/or Rodman against the likes of Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, Reed, Walton, Malone, and even Parrish? Yikes.

Extremely well done! Way to show the younger generations what NBA basketball was like back then. It was a big man's game and the fundamentals were sound during that time- probably closer to the way the game was meant to be played. Today's game has evolved so much that Naismith probably wouldn't even recognize it. Big men shooting threes? Mid-range two-point shots considered lower metric shots? Career 12-14 ppg players signing multi-million dollar contracts. Yeah, the game has changed a lot.

While Wilt will always be , to me , the BEST player to ever put on a uniform , I also will acknowledge KAJ as being right up there with him. On any given night , it could swing either way. I truly loved watching them BOTH play! I remember being so excited when my Lakers were gonna get KAJ ! I just feel that with Wilt's strength & power , Wilt could go to a place , a new level that Kareem , just couldn't get to. Even tho Wilt was 10 years longer in the league when they played , Wilt could still run as fast,, if not faster , jump as high , if not higher ..you name it. What KAJ had OVER Wilt , was the right head-space! KAJ's frame of mind & out-look , in general , was much healthier than Wilt's outlook. I know KAJ wasn't exactly an open guy & didnt really want to associate with many people, His view towards the game & how it should be played ,was better. When coaches put Wilt into a role-player position , Wilt got TOO comfy with it. They want me to play Def & rebound, i';ll do that & sometimes even refused to shoot & sometimes his team really needed him to! But...yeah... Both were amazing!

I have to give Kareem his due. He was a great scorer, good rebounder, shot blocker, and general defensive player. Wilt was a good scorer, after he had stopped concentrating on scoring. He was more than a great scorer, when he did concentrate on scoring. He was also a more than great rebounder, shot blocker, and general defensive player, for his whole career. Oh yes, he got a significant portion of his points, in his later years, from offensive rebounds. I also have to mention, stamina, running the floor, and assists. I believe rebounding is second in importance, after scoring. I know I left out a few things, but that should just about cover it.
And he chose to stop scoring that’s what even more insane, if he kept on the pace he was on he was going to avg 35-40ppg for his career, Kareem was great top 3 center of all time and arguably has the best resume ever of any basketball player, but he wasn’t Wilt the Big Dipper Chamberlain, it sucks wilt died so early
