    The Peugeot 405, even the basic 70bhp 1.9D 405 GLD versions, had a ride/handling balance that was pretty much optimal. Very few cars before or since it have been able to strike that compromise. It rode really well and had the sort of wheel-travel that made mid-corner bumps not an issue, but still turned in keenly and cornered well.
    Pity so many Mi16s and Citroen BX GTI 16Vs got butchered to put their engines in 205 GTis...

    Love these cars, and I'm American! Too bad this model couldn't save Peugeot in the United States. I really liked the styling of the 505 and 405, and they had a geat ride/handling balance and excellent brakes. If only more Americans took notice, Peugeot's fate in this country could have been different. These days, most Americans wouldn't have a clue about these cars, no memory of their existence, and that is sad.

      I’m American as well I completely agree with you. I think they could’ve succeeded if they had better marketing and more dealers.

    Always thought this was Peugeot's best, though the 406 after it came close, when they really had their stuff together, to a certain extent they still do in certain models, moreso than any other make.
    Very Handsome Pinninfarina style with it's Alfa 164 inspired style. one of the tidiest 4 door saloon shapes then, and now, even the estate version was trim lookin.

    • @Hipas_Account
      @Hipas_Account 10 месяцев назад

      If you want an even more Alfa 164 inspired Peugeot that'd be the Peugeot 605 (near identical side profile), which is essentially the replacement for the 604 and the 505, sadly they never sold it in the States even though production started in 1989 and Peugeot stayed in the US till 1991... Then again might have been better since the 605 suffered from poor electrics until 1992-93, i own a 1997 Model which has not had the best of lives and has started to decompose. And oh yeah the Peugeot 406 is to me the most beautiful affordable sedan out there, here in Finland you can get one that is still serviceable between the 1000€ and 5000€ mark for the more powerful V6 models.

    I saw one of these late last month.
    I was walking through the visitors parking lot at the hospital that I work at .
    It looked like it had lead a rough life but had current Maryland tags and I work in Madison WI.
    Apparently someone had enough faith it it's reliability to drive it halfway cross country.

      What ... you`re surprised that Peugeot can be reliable? (I know because my cousin has the 407 and previousla he had the 406 etc.).
      Although I do realise that Peugeot regretably isn`t available on US & Canada markets since 1991 so finding spare parts and proper maintenance is tricky.
      I`m so happy that I live in Europe where Peugeot never left.

      @@tyraela115 thanks for the links my friend. So how reliable were they since your cousin owned one?

    • @tyraela115
      @tyraela115 2 года назад

      @@ubiased23 Pretty reliable. Once on the 406 they had to change the clutch because my uncle who had previously owned the 406 repeatedly towed too heavy (beyond factory prescribed limits) burden on a triler. I think he was towing rocks for making a small wall on a backyard or something like that.
      And a sensor (parking sensor I think) was acting up if I recall and had to be replaced.
      Otherwise pretty standard maintenance. They sold the 406 back in 2016 which had about 200 000 km on the clock. It wasn`t necessary to sell it`s just that they`ve replaced it with the 407 (made in 2009) in very good condition and few kilometers (don`t remember how many). Today it has around 189 000 km on the clock and unlike many many Passats for example is rust free. I`ve seen the Citroen Xantia (406 cousin) 1.9 Td (turbodiesel) with 750 000 kilometers and still going strong. My uncle told me of Xm with 3.0 V6 (not the 24 valve with 170 BHP) with 700 000km etc.

      So for America, they have to homologate bumpers. The slick mi16 body kit wasn’t homologated.
      If you look closely, you’ll see that these bumpers, which are supposedly S bumpers are different than the non mi 16 European bumpers as well. They stick out much further, not to mention the lights.

      Heck, even my old 98' Honda accord 4 cylinder only maybe made 150HP on a 2.3L engine. This was a 1.9L making 158HP. Most of the other cars of this era you would see on Motor Week would be happy to see 120HP.. Exampling being a Cadillac Brougham 5.0L V8 making a paltry 140HP in 88'..

    This car was rather expensive in Europe. I owned its "nephew" the Citroën Xantia, underneath the same platform/engines. Japanese reliability from France, with hydropneumatic suspension. I loved it! And it came with an "intelligent" automatic gearbox (that was the only part I did not really like).

    • @htimsid

      Rather 405 and BX share platform (the four-wheel-drive 405T16 even has rear hydropneumatic BX suspension assembly). Thereafter 406 and Xantia share platform.

      That is really sad.
      My family had one until 2012, when finally the timing belt broke and it wasn't worth saving.
      I still regret the day I had to say goodbye.
      The 405 lives on in the form of Iran Khodro's 'Samand' model, but for obvious reasons, neither you nor I will see one in the foreseeable future.
