I'm with Matt on this one.
The fact that he was able to concede on so many instances, and yet still have the opinion that Maverick is a better movie, says a lot. And, for the most part, I agree with the same points.
Plus, more often than not, sequels suck. Not only was Maverick an awesome movie on its own, it exceeded in the realm of sequels.
I liked it way better than the first.

I can’t believe I agree but the original was just bad enough and the second was just good enough

Bobby made the better argument. Cultural impact, score, character development all go towards the original. I have to agree on the lack of chemistry with Kelly McGillis BUT I don't think Cruise has good chemistry with any woman on any film (Eyes Wide Shut? He was married to her and I wasn't buying it). I say plot-wise maybe a tie because Maverick had a bunch of maybe-endings and just kept going and no one freakin' died (someone needed to die, but then again would I have cared if anyone but Rooster or Maverick died? No.) All that being said 30-something years DOES make a big difference in cinema and Maverick was pretty dope

Great films can be gauged like stones in a lake: the greater the film the more powerful the ripples through the industry, and more so the heart of the viewer.

I’m happy with both of them equally.
Though I do enjoy the characters in the original more so than in Maverick.

The new one is the best movie out in a long time. The original I barely liked when it came out. I think there was far better movies when top gun came out I’m not even sure it was the best military movie at the time. I didn’t like Tom Cruise’s character in the original, and now that you point out that overwhelming homosexuality 😳
I do think the first one was more culturally relevant. Maybe a more interestingly shot film? But I was more entertained with this one. The soundtrack was great in original as well. I feel like people didn’t even like the original until Cruise became Cruise. Btw, I like these film discussions and debates. I hope you can do stuff like this more often.
Like, Most culturally important film? Best action Movie? Tony Scott Best movie? Quentin T best movie (True Romance btw) Best new director? You really have something here and doing a great job!

There can be no question that the original is the better movie. Also the plot is better and the stakes are higher. Top Gun is a coming of age story not with a child or teenager but with a man becoming a real grown up man by dealing with danger, loss, fear, love and overcome the shadow of his father. That is the plot and it is translated beautifully. The dead of Mavericks best friend Goose, and a beloved and important character for the audience, is one of the most memorable movie deaths of all time and off course high stakes. Theses are not high school boys but soldiers doing very dangerous things. Also in the original it is about the cold war, which was real at that time not like the conflict in Top Gun Maverick.
Regarding the gay stuff: during the 90s and afterwards western societies have been becoming much more suspicious about men being sexy, emotionell, etc. being gay than back in the 70s or 80s. Hair Metal Rockers wore women's underwear on stage and where the epitome of manliness.

I find it mind-blowing that people liked Top Gun 2 so much.
It was one of the most cliche movies as can be, even down to the characters - Protagonist is the alpha guy, meets his former lover and they immediately spark something (both of them are generically 'available'), the student is meant to have a spark, but is living under father's shadow, his rival is a douche etc etc.
I have many (war) movies like this. It was an okay to good movie

You may not like the Lady Gaga song but they still play that One Republic song on the radio two years later lol

That song is a straight ripoff of Young Folks from 2006. When all else fails just rework a multi-platinum record and you’re guaranteed to get a hit.

100% the first one had a biiiig impact and I was never really a fan of the first one. But yeah, I can't quote a single thing from the 2nd, or hum that Gaga song (they shoulda asked Sia instead), and I didn't give a sh*t about any of the pilots except maybe Bob (only cuz he was pathetic, not cuz he was a good character)... and Rooster of course. But can newer movies even have a cultural impact anymore? I can't tell if these newer generations aren't affected like us because they suck or cuz movies suck.... or a combo? Maverick was really good- but was it memorable in an infectious way like old action movies were? Honestly, I think no....but maybe I'm jaded.... but I'm pretty confident no one in 30 years will care about Maverick 👀

Granted, the first film has the stronger 80s vibe set to eleven, which 'Maverick' can't compete with. The sequel wins out because of a few reasons-Bobby, you even mentioned this-the sum of its parts. The sequel has heart, it has practical effects, and a narrative goal with stakes. It still is the best film of 2022 to me!
