    Afterlife and this are just so tonally off from the originals. The whole tone of the originals was that these were a group of normal to nerdy guys who were taking on what should have been a glamorous job, but in such a way that it was no more glamorous than being a local plumber, all for comedic effect. The problem with these sequels is that they're made with the audience's nostalgia in consideration and baked in. Afterlife took itself so seriously it expected us to treat the Ecto-1 with almost religious reverence, but originally it was the punchline to a joke that they were so poor they could only afford an old broken down ambulance as a company vehicle. And now in this movie the tone is pushed even further out because Winston has a high tech ghost containment research facility that looks like it would take a budge in the millions to maintain and operate, and yet the Ghostbusters are still driving around in what is now a car that's pushing 70 years old. Together none of it works.

    • @hardcutreviews
      @hardcutreviews  5 месяцев назад +3

      You'd think Winston would have supplied them with a reliable vehicle from this century but then how would they cash in on the nostalgia?

    • @Dude-oh8vq
      @Dude-oh8vq 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yep, a lot that doesn't make sense. Two years has passed since Afterlife, Winston is rich, with a new lab, but can't buy a new vehicle in that two years time? I mean, there is the newish van, but it's not being used much.
      The film is actually a little better on second watch, but still needs a lot of improvements. SONY needs to get their act together and stop with the memberberries, and get better writers for the next one, with less CGI.

    Being born in 2000, the movies I watched as a kid were mostly from the 80s and 90s, these new movies are just using nostalgia and IP's like Ghostbusters or Star Wars to try and forge them into something they were never created to be. Stories used to have greater meanings than a 15-year-old lesbian crush who happens to know every convenient thing to build whatever plot they need so she automatically becomes the chosen one. This movie felt like it was trying to merge modern BS with great movie arcs like The Goonies or Super 8, showcasing how kids in films can have real meaning/purpose.

    Sorry for the following novel.
    I liked Afterlife. It gave the Egon character a nice send-off. But any Ghostbuster movie without Egon just makes me sad. Harold's humour was felt in Afterlife with the lamp guiding Phoebe and I liked that. But after Frozen, it just made me sad to not see or hear Egon again.
    There was too much in this movie, that I actually fell asleep, I woke at points when my friend asked me about things since I had binged the OG 1, 2, and Afterlife before watching Frozen. But I would fall back asleep after waking up partway through the end of the 2nd act. So I can't comment on the movie to much or negativity too since I will need a rewatch it when my body isn't so tired.
    It'd be easier if the cast was split between two movies to prevent over crowding a movie it ruins the intimacy and character development. So have one movie on the parents, Winston + Ray (cameos from the kids in University), the other one with the kids, Dana (who maybe has a 2nd child in the same uni as the kids), and each team in their own movie with their own big bad character for act 3.
    I would like to see Loius Tully (maybe a university teacher), Dana and Oscar Barrett again if they separate the parents from the kids, have Callie, and Gary in a team with Oscar and Lars let them be the active on-call NY team and put the kids through education to get PhD's like the OG's had. Use that to just focus on the parents working with Winston and Ray.
    The last two movies have mostly been through Phoebe's eyes, we need to be giving the other characters their time to develop in a movie.
    Sorry for the novel
    end/

    Spot-on review. It was such a Frankenstein's monster of a movie. Just corporate, safe, and soulless. In what logistical planet would Winston not tell the Ghostbusters about his freaking ghost research facility?? Thing #194 that made no sense at all in this movie. The whole thing is just cliches, nostalgia, and cartoon logic. Don't even get me started on the ending--a crowd that's clearly on a set, Murray calling Peck a clown (with the weird ADR'd "You're just never gonna get it are you?" line after), everything wrapping up tidily with a nice little bow.....Sigh.

    As a fan it pains me to say this but I have to be honest - Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a bad movie.
    The film is total a mess. It's boring, poorly paced, confusing, convoluted and overly complicated. There are far too many characters, some of which have been needlessly shoehorned into the story. It's overstuffed with unnecessary dialogue, dull subplots, pointless characters and scenes which go on for far too long. It's not funny either. I didn't laugh once during the movie, and neither did the audience I was watching it with. Neither is it frightening. Laughs and scares are the two things you expect from a Ghostbusters film but this latest entry in the series is completely devoid of any.
    Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan may be talented directors, but they're the wrong people to be writing Ghostbusters films. Afterlife was mediocre at best, but Frozen Empire is just plain bad.
    With a heavy heart, I rate this film 3 out of 10.
    I feel a lot of fans are in denial about just how bad this film is.

      @@hardcutreviews I think that the studio should continue with Venkman, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddemore, by making the next sequel an animated film instead of live action. If they chose the right style of animation it could work, and we'd be back with the characters that we know and love. The story could be set in the past, with the characters still in their 30s and 40s. If it works it could open the doors for a whole series of animated sequels starring the original characters.

      @@ghostbusterscollector8593 A good premise in theory, but my concern would be that because it's animation, it would repeat the same mistake that has been made since GB2: tailoring it for kids.
      The 1984 GB wasn't made for kids. A lot of the OG's humour is adult, with notable sexual innuendos and subtext (Keymaster and Gatekeeper) that passed over our heads as kids, but adults understood immediately and giggled in response.
      Not to mention the GB's were a bunch of down-to-earth, boozing, smoking underdogs , with Peter Venkman in particular being a fast-mouthed, womanising charlatan who's into ghostbusting predominantly for the fame and
      money ("The franchise rights alone will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams"). Making the franchise more kid -friendly has taken all of that realistic edge out that makes it appeal to adults.
      On a related note, I'm a major GB fan, but one thing I specifically dislike about the recent films is they are too cartoonish, largely because everything is made easier by CGI. The 1984 GB relied more on practical effects, which is more work-intensive than CGI, but grounded the film in reality.
      Even if you didn't believe in the supernatural, you could at least buy while watching the ghosts and monsters on screen were real supernatural entities interacting with our real world and, with the possible exception of Slimer, this made the ghosts scarier.
      Watching the newer films, at no point was I not aware the ghosts I was seeing were CGI creations and not ghosts that could plausibly interact with the real world. Because the ghosts and other supernatural entities look so cartoonish and unreal, I can't suspend disbelief enough to buy this is the real world this is happening in, as opposed to some cartoonish alternative reality.
      Now I'm an adult, that really doesn't appeal to me and I worry an animated film could just put another nail in the coffin of a franchise I love.

    • @ghostbusterscollector8593
      @ghostbusterscollector8593 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Hypestrike1 I agree with everything you've said. There hasn't really been a good Ghostbusters film since the original, and a major reason for that is because every film since has been primarily geared towards a child audience. Consequently, a lot of the humour and horror has been watered down and weakened.
      If an animated sequel was to happen, it should be geared towards an adult audience. They need to recapture the look, tone and feel of the original, but they'd need to use the right style of animation and write a damn good script. I think it could be really good, provided they have the right approach.
