I bought the original launch 16 in all black with partially serrated blade on Blade HQ website when I saw it get down to 129.99. I jumped on it. Love the Trac Tek handle and M4 steel. I do share your same thoughts on the pocket clip. I've been carrying it for 2 weeks now and was hoping it would break in but I'm gonna go ahead and bend it out a tad more to slip in and out of pocket better. The screws are a easy fix but I'm gonna go against you on the button. I like that it's low profile. It takes a deliberate action to deploy. I don't want an automatic knife going off in my pants accidentally. It's happened before! I also think if they put a axis lock in this model you could no longer call it a launch... so again gotta stick with Kershaw on the brand on that.
On the button; i was watching all of this to find out about the button, because I don't want to invest in a knife that is gonna deploy in my pocket, when I'm in a hurry and end up bleeding me out. I was a little surprised to hear the complaint and thought it should be obvious why it would have been changed. For the very reason Gideon disliked it, I'll probably get one now. LOL
Literally both of these knives are $143 for the launch 16 and the 17 I bought for 144 so I don't know where this guy's getting the price except from the Kershaw website
Glad someone finally said something about them clips I love that knife and would buy it but I had a bare knuckle with that clip and couldn’t get it in pocket that’s why I gifted it wish they would change them I will stick with my bailout
I can relate! I restore and work around classic cars most of the week. My 3V Bailout shop knife I now just leave in my toolbox. I’m down to wearing cotton sweat pants and pull over hoodies in effort not to scratch any more paint work.
Gotta get yourself some UF Pro pants, I utilize the front carry magazine pocket for my ZT308. Eliminates the stress of potentially scratching my truck.....though it wouldn't matter to much considering how much the environment has added beautiful Idaho pinstripes to my Taco.
G'day Aaron, clip aside, both look very good designs. I dig the 17 in particular, its way more in keeping with why I'd even want an auto to begin with. I dont mind the low profile button on this one since it's not a glove wearing job and S35 is a bonus too. For a workhorse, which is mostly how mine are used, I wouldn't bother. Its a moot point for me anyway, no autos here, still, interesting stuff and great to see better value than other options out there. Cheers Duke.
Thanks for the video. Just ordered the 17 then saw your video a few minutes later. Glad I made a good choice for once. I chose the 17 over the 16 because it is 25% lighter at only 3oz.
Ive got the black launch 16 and i love it. Id put it on par with my pm2 as a great American made large knife. I agree with you on that pocket clip tho. Boyyyy do i hate the pocket clip. Ive thought about taking it off and just throwing a lanyard on there.
I bought the launch 16, I hate the button . I have many auto knives ,this is VERY difficult to deploy, even sent back to Kershaw for warranty work, came back the same. my My Ken Onion Blur deploys easier and faster than this knew auto. would like to get my money back or exchange for another assisted opener!!!
Man you're so right, Aaron. Kershaw should darn well know better than to do that with pocket clips. Makes it seem like a total afterthought, like they got the basic design done and just stopped paying attention to the details. It's an awesome looking knife, though. But for certain they must have tons of customer feedback from their other models with Trac-Tek to know that putting that stuff up along the side of the clip still causes serious hindrance getting it in and out of the pocket. I mean that's basically why I never carry my Blur. Even with a nice aftermarket clip, it's still such a pain to get in and out. If they didn't needto put that big open field with the flag printed there, they could have moved that patch of Trac-Tek forward and left it completely clear of the clip. Then they could have used a better clip and recessed the screws. BAM! Perfect knife. Man, they should give you and I jobs!
_It just blows my mind that every manufacturer has opted to go "Deep Carry" LITERALLY all because RUclips reviewers hemmed & hawed over it!_ *_When it comes to actual real world carry and use.. I truly do not want an ultra deep carry pocket clip!!!_*
I agree, Deep carry clips suck. Almost every dude will put a lynch clip on their spyderco and ruin it ..Then every guy just says they don’t like the knife being exposed 😑
Agreed ! When I started watching knifetubers I was stunned that everyone was demanding deep carry. Bought one that set below the pocket hem. It went back - too much fumbling to retrieve.
Seems to be the story of Kershaw, close but no cigar...I order one I like then dang, some feature makes you put it somewhere because they are not quite as good as others...At the price you should not have to modify it. They should try out some of their designs before releasing them...Buck is the same way. I love Buck because it is US made and I bought a 110 thin in S30V and can't get the dang thing open with one hand. Another drawer rider.
I bought the launch 18 and it has the same crappy pocket clip and screws. You forgot to mention it’s uncomfortable as all hell too. It took a little modification but I was able to get a black Civivi ti clip on it and holy crap is it better. All I had to do was file one of the screw holes on the ti clip to get the holes to line up with the knifes holes.
Launch 16: The blade and handle are both 5 stars. Zero complaints. My problem is the blade release button. The button sits flush with the side of the frame. For the blade to pop open, one must squeeze very hard to depress it. How Kershaw could bring a flawed button system to market is beyond me. I'm guessing Kershaw will make an over sized button available. But in the meantime the work-around is to use an epoxy cement like JB Weld or MarineTex. Throughly clean button, use painters tape to tape off around the button. The epoxy, once dry can be sanded to the desired height.
Ouch bro. That scratch hurts too see😢 i had a gnarly incident with a benchmade (older otf) where the pocket clip GOUGED a massive chunk of paint and chipped about a quarter sized flake of paint off, not to mention the metal scratch. But it wasn't 1 min later did i set the knife on the hood(mighta somewhat sorta lightly tossed it down...) but that caused the action to fire, causing a 3 1/2 INCH SCRATCH AND THE BLADE STABBED THROUGH THE COWELL OF MY 4 MONTH OLD MERCEDES........ 😔
I don't recall one pocket knife I've ever had that didn't require removing the pocket clip and bending it slightly with pliers to make it functional...not a big deal. I ordered a 17 today and it looks like it won't be any different.
My thoughts exactly with making it manual and the pocket clip. How do you like Spydercos compression lock? I was never a big Spyderco fan but I got a compression lock model in my hand and couldn’t put it down. So fidgety I love them
I didn't carry my Kershaw Bare Knuckle because the clip was so terrible. I would have bought the 16. When I saw the clip they used I was pretty bummed.
Only because you asked us to comment, tanto rhymes with pronto. Also every time you cut slices off that pool noodle I get a craving for fruit and I have no idea why.
@@gideonstactical nice vid. have you done a review on the launch 15 with the Magnacut??? Seems interesting knowing magnacut sells for $300+ or more. But overall really digging the tanto 👍🏼
I had the same issue with the livewire pocket clip, freaking horrible, shouldnt have to think about putting it in my pocket and fidiling everytime 🤦♂️
Precisely. Kershaw has actually listened to users' request for more recess depth to avoid triggering. Guess they can't please everyone, especially those who don't actually carry an auto but somehow complain about the deep recessed button.
Get it done Kershaw! Make it a dura-lock option, and retire those awful clips! I never carried my Bareknuckle, solely because of that clip, and that was also my first experience with that clip. What a shame, because I love the Bareknuckle as well. Clips gotta go, at the very least. I’m in total agreement with Aaron. If only there was a spoon style, Spyderco style clip, it would be absolutely badass!
Yeah have scratched my truck with plenty of things stuck in my pockets a $20 dollar can of touch up paint from dealership and fixed right up. My truck is a tool like my knives and if it gets scratched it gets scratched not going to cry about it just fix it.

KERSHAW: Please, release a Launch 16 manual with a crossbar style lock. If it was sub $200 it would blow the Bugout out of the water. Come on guys, make it happen!
I bought the Bailout after your review it’s a great knife. Many folks love the Bugout. But the Bugout is too small and light for me. The Bailout is what I wish the Bugout was. One handed use is important for me so I usually don’t gravitate toward out the side autos. The only issue I’ve had with my pocket clips is once I ripped the clip off of my Paramilitary 2. Well as George from Blade HQ says, if its an American tanto its pronounced "Tanto", if its a real Japanese style tanto then its pronounced "Tonto".
An actual benefit to being left-handed. You don't take chunks out of your vehicle getting in and out of the car! 😂
