More modern metal bands have a whole arsenal of effects and production techniques at their disposal to make their music heavier. Black Sabbath though managed to take basically the same equipment as the Beatles and the Stones and write something so heavy with it that they needed a whole new name for it.

Everybody’s got their own opinions and preferences about it and there’s something for everyone :) Personally, what defines something as metal FOR ME is how hard hitting it can sound. It can groove and build up tension, make you wanna go outside and like fight a tree or just do something ACTIVE to get all of the energy out, while keeping the spirit of the music alive which is something I truly appreciate about the art form. It’s part of the reason why I love newer bands like After the Burial and Wage War, they just bring the heat and bring it HARD!
