    After reading the comments below, I was not the only one that found this a bit confusing. With all of the 'linking the kick to the arms' videos I have watched, some focus on the recovering arm where you kick with the opposite leg, and others focus on the pull/catch arm where you kick with the same arm. That is how I do it, focus on the pull arm. I guess this is related to those who think the hips drive the shoulder rotation/opposite side, to those who feel the shoulders drive the hip rotation/same side, which is where I am.

    I think by opposite side she means once the arm enters the water the opposite leg should kick. By the time the arm is about to be vertical (90 degrees down in the water) the same side leg should kick. (And the other hand just entered the water)
    The most pressure you're going to feel on your arm is at its vertical state, so naturally you're going to feel that the same side leg is kicking once this arm goes, but it's actually the opposite arm that just went inside the water (so she described it correctly in that way).

    Hi Coach Mandy. Thanks again for that wonderful informative video. Just to clarify, you said the kick and arm movements must be "opposite" of each other. Yet on your correct demo video, your leg kick-down is the same side as the arm-pull/catch going down. Your beautiful kick timing demo is exactly the same as in another swim channel, but the coach there describes it as the same side (not opposite), yet both of you demonstrating the same correct kick timing. Thanks!

      Hi Leah sorry for the confusion. I was directing this movement based on the arm entering the water, not on the catch. Both are correct. Doing it wrong for so long that my stoke is built around it! But I am far slower than I should be, given my condition and a lifetime of dedication. Before when I tried your suggestion it both destroyed my rhythm (which I developed years ago after I developed proper arm rotation (took months). So what I experienced with this kick alternative (your 2 beat alternation of arm with other leg style) was the sense of timing being totally off and a lot of difficulty avoiding regressing back into same side arm and leg, which feels natural now and for which I have rhythm. But I stuck with the opposing arm and for the two beat you show here. And after about a week, though it feels awkward, there is about 20-40 seconds off each hundred in a 3 k swim and I do not have a pace that drops throughout. I know the improvement sounds insane, but a person doing something terribly wrong can see giant improvements if they correct that flaw. Here there was one other factor: I have used short fins this week, which tends to knock off about 15 seconds per hundred for me in the past. But that still leaves an unexpected 5-20 second improvement. All the same, can't sense the 'feeling' that I am propelling with the kick. I don't feel hip engagement -- some when I downkick my left leg and I am beginning to sense it with the upkick of the right leg at the same time. But I don't feel the body rotation at all -- if anything I feel as if my upper body is disengaged by my lower body in this way. It kind of feels like I am doing the old 'scissor kick: in what was called the side stroke/ But I am faster and more efficient so something must be corrected. I'll keep with it and keep trying to explore the feeling and geT accustomed to the habitual rhythm. But I don't grasp the sense of disconnection -- where is that fELT? iS IT IN THE PELVIS LOCATED WHERE ThE SCREW IS IN A pair of scissors that you open and close from side to side. Because I do feel THAT on the left down kick but it seems muted on the right down kick on the other side, as if I don't have the same range to activate it on the right side of the body at the hip. I'm not explaining this well, but if you have any idea of what might be happening I would be grateful to hear. So you don't imagine I'm doing something really bizarre, a swim coach looked at my stroke in a video and said it look's like a swim team member. But I am way slower than I should be. Ashamed to suggest a time. There are countless people twice as fast. And I do think the error is in this kick. AT the very least, though, thank you for this video as results seem to show it has helped and might even help more. :)

    I have no doubt that properly coordinating the kick with the rest of the body is important. But, many years ago, I "discovered" that people have varying degrees of "kinesthetic sense." Athletes tend to have lots; some of us have very little. Thus, for those of us low on the k.s. scale, can you suggest some drills or such to help us get the timing right since we have little idea of what our legs are really doing?

      I am swimming 3 or 4 days each week, ~2400 yards in 45 min, all freestyle. My yardage varies a bit from day to day, which may be the result of more or less rest, or maybe some days my "form" is better. But, at 75 y .o., I'll take what I can get swim-wise. Hi Mandy, thanks for the video. Up to now, I've just been kicking with no thought to timing and actually no idea whether I've a 6 beat kick or 5 or 5.5! :) Ive decided to spend some if my practice doing a 2 beat kick as you've shown here, focusing on kicking just as I start to transition from the catch to the pull on that side. I decided that way as I'm not certain of my consistency of timing of my other arm (front quadrant swimming?). It felt very odd trying a 2 beat kick and can only do a few strokes before it goes wrong but I'll persevere with it.

Before lock down I was doing a few minutes of 2 beat kick practice at the end of my pool swim sessions if there was time left. I got to the point where I was probably swimming about 20 metres before it broke down. I've been back in Open Water for a month now after a 5.5 month layoff. Last week I thought I'd pick this up again, practicing on a 250M circuit. I found that after 2 sessions I was able to swim a 75 metre leg, keeping the 2 beat going. Reading through the comments, it seems like some people are confusing hand entry with catch. They are two completely different things. Hand entry should happen as the opposite leg kicks down. The hand will push a little further forward as you rotate onto that side, then catch the begins. Right as the catch transitions into the pull, the leg on the same side should be kicking down, and the opposite hand should be entering.

    I got pull-buoy dependent over the last few months after some ankle & knee issues, and it's been a struggle to get my 2 beat kick right. I've been getting by with 4 beat for most of my workout, but I can tell that the timing is still hit & miss a lot of the time. dg5301 well you were using the pull buoy for your injury and that is definitely for a different reason which I can understand. If you use it for specific reason such as that then of course it is helpful but if it’s used for buoyancy and not moving forward without it, then it can cause the connection to be lost. Try small distances with a two beat but a 4 beat is perfectly fine and works very well. It will come an go it’s a part of the process. Keep me posted on how it goes! -Coach M

      Thank you for your comment. Every swimmer's stroke is unique and it's important to find what works best for your body. While some swimmers may prefer to have their hands at the surface as they switch sides, it's not necessarily required. In fact, slightly lowering the arms can help with body alignment. It's all about finding a comfortable and efficient technique that allows you to move through the water effectively.

    Can you explain the timing of the catch with the down kick in 2BK freestyle, please? I guess they happen at the same time, and when your body (torso) is flat the pull (power phase) actually happens then you gain the max propulsion. Thank you.

    • @SWIMVICE

      Xuan Loc yes the catch happens at the same time. The hip connects the catch as it is a whole body movement. 👍🏼🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach M

    So you should kick down to raise opposite hip as the opposite arm pulls, correct?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  4 года назад +2

      Hi Margie when you kick down with the right leg, your left hip rotates down. Or think of it as the left side of your body rotates down. When you kick down with the right leg, it rotates you to the opposite side of your body. For example, when you run, you swing your right arm forward as your left leg swings forward like this emoji 😄👉🏼 🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️. It’s the same mechanics in the water as well. Watch the demo based on the arm entering the water. Left arm enters the water while my right leg kicks down. 👍🏼 -Coach M

    I usedvto be able to kick well as a younger squad swimmer and was around 27 secs for 50 freestyle
    Im now in my 50's and back swimming masters
    Ive been mixing up my training with sprint and slower distance work and drills
    I am back down to 30,5 for my 50 free but my kicking is really out of time and lacking in power
    Could you please direct me to some drills to improve this
    Cheers👍😁

      Hi Chris! Thank you for sharing your current results. I will have more on this subject in the future. In the meantime, focus on swimming from your hips and the kick will start to naturally connect properly. Avoid a pull buoy for now and prioritize the feeling of the rotation and power start from the hips! Stay connected and keep me posted on your progress! 🙌🏽👍🏼🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach Mandy

    Hello Mandy . I am french so maybe I didn’t understand what you explained . Is the demo 2 correct with the opposite side kicking ? Or the best is the 2 b same side kicking and stroke to feel better the connection ?
    Thanks for your answer and videos . 😊

    So I have been doing a two beat kick on the same side as my arm entry. You’re saying do the opposite to achieve better rotation? How do I undo this muscle memory I’ve been doing for years?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  4 года назад

      Hi Ben yes the kick down happens when your opposite hand enters the water. It’s like walking or running the connection happens across the body and you feel a significant glide moving forward. Here’s an older video where I demonstrated all three variations of the kick (2,4, and 6 beat kick) : ruclips.net/video/qPQcHBHVYWo/видео.html
      Typically swimming with a pull buoy for too long can cause this or it can just happen. The best thing to do for now is relax your legs as much as possible and focus on the hip rotation not your feet you will start to correct it from there. I will be coming out with a series soon to help with this but in the meantime relaxing the legs is the first step to get out of that pattern. 🏊🏼‍♂️👍🏼 -Coach M

    A little confused by this clip. In another one of your video's (Practice Freestyle Kick Timing) you say to time your reach and kick as if you'd be walking. Step forward equals to a kick means your opposite hand reaches. I don't see that happening here. I see more of a delayed kick as you reach. It looks more like a kick when you pull.
    Am I missing something here about timing?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  3 года назад

      Hi Kico, thank you for your question. I understand your confusion. Where the timing occurs is connected from the hips. So when my right hand enters, my left hip drives up at the same time. What you may be seeing as a delay is the finish of the kick from my foot. It’s a snap from the foot to finish and complete the kick so by perception, it looks “delayed”. You can either look at the connection happening from the right hand entering with a left hip rotation OR a left hip rotation connected with the left catch (aka pull).
      They are one in the same it’s just a different way to look at it. The focus on land is so you feel the connection from the hip to the forward extension (this is how I prefer to Coach this part). It’s difficult on land to finish the full end of the kick from the foot. It ends up following through correctly when focusing on the hips anyways. So the main priority is feeling the connect from the center of your body. 🙌👍🏊‍♂️-Coach Mandy

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  Год назад +1

      Yes, both are correct. It’s how you look at it. However, in this video and on my channel I refer to the entering arm not the pulling arm for multiple reasons.
      Entering arm = opposite side leg
      Pulling arm = same side leg
      They are both equally correct. Hope this helps clarify! Best, Coach Mandy

    Then why on a 50 meter sprint you definitely don’t do a two kick count, instead you have to kick as hard as you can, cause your kick is what propels you forward for speed. That’s why you see professionals making huge splashes on there 50 free.

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  Год назад +1

      Yes - for sprint events, a six beat kick is used. However, the two beat kick pattern is the foundation of a sprint kick. It is connected the same and is all explained inside the SWIMVICE freestyle program. Learn more at: swimvice.com 🙌🏼😎
