Under fairly bright studio lights, maroon looks a lot more red.
As for the differences in admiral uniforms, one of the lesser known aspects of our present day military is that flag officers (generals and admirals) can design their own uniform.

considering a TNG era first admiral rank is one pip in a gold square, it's clear the enterprise was constantly dealing with some of the highest ranking admirals around.

Because this uniform jacket is made in wool They may have used standard tailoring practices to get the fit right. Wool moves and stretches very easily when it’s tailored. The lining appears to be Standard acetate lining so that seaming at the top of the lining may act as ease Across the shoulders to help the acetate give like the wool that would be my take as to why it has that extra seeming in the lining. I would hope that you would make a size pattern of this jacket you have the best patterns out there and this would be a great addition to my collection of your patterns

Alex, When I made the season one Admiral uniform from your pattern I used gaberdine for the red and jumbo spandex for the black.

Obsessive Costuming Dude you saw it on Facebook and commented on it. I was standing with actress at STLV, I was the one with the mustache

Lot easier to sew than the spandex even with a walking foot. But I give most of the credit to your instructions and analysis of everything you make a pattern for. Because you are obsessive I am able to glean information from you that allows me to adjust the fit to my 43 43 43 body

From an ease of wear for the actor's do you think the back zipper or front zipper is better? I'd think having the back zipper your actors would need help, but with a front zipper they could do it themselves. Obviously for like cooling down on down time between shots and what not. You're opinion sir?

Well, obviously a front zipper is more convenient - especially for men! Women seem more accustomed to back zippers (at least in our corner of the world).
But the back zippers tend to make for better-looking costumes, especially since actors will rarely have their backs to the audience/camera.

@@ObsessiveCostumingDude yeah it is an interesting dilemma. LOL. And if you want to create the illusion of a garment not having closures of any kind, a back zipper helps. Thanks for your imput.

Wow I looked up 228 U that’s straight up purple. Were they designed to look purple and they ended up looking red or was red the intended look?

The TNG-era "red" uniforms and fabric swatches I've seen have all been very purple - definitely more of a "berry" color than red.
Obviously I wasn't there, but I believe these colors were chosen specifically because of how they would "read" on-camera in the show, not how they looked in-person. (From what I've seen, movie/TV costumes are almost never the actual color they looked like in the final product.)

Quite a bit of time and money go into making all these costuming resources, so I'll be launching a Ko-Fi soon for supporters to help me churn them out faster. :)
