    It was an okay film. I didn't mind the narration through the eyes of the wife. I just felt like there was too much narration. I particularly enjoyed watching the evolution of the motorcycle club. How it started out with a group of guys wanting to find a place to belong and enjoy life, and then how it evolved into a gang of miscreants. I think the ending fell extremely flat.

    View it as a greek tragedy. Then the ending makes more sense. I agree it was somewhat anti climatic, however many people who walk away from a bad path that they are on in life, often do so anti climatically. Someone dies. They almost die. They almost go to jail, etc... and they take some time to think about it and then quietly walk away.
    To those of us that have done that.... It resonates.

    This movie rides like a bat out of meh. Just another boring biopic lite film with no cinematic styling to it. There's never any real tension or dramatic choices to be made, it's the wife telling the reporter: "this happened, then this happened, and then this happened." really weak storytelling like "Killers of the Flower Moon." There is no examination or catharsis or bikeriding for that matter. Pretty disappointing.

  • @yuanyuanmai
    @yuanyuanmai 5 месяцев назад +1

    Although I am a fan of Austin Butler I think you gave a fair comment on the Bikeriders. I watched it twice for the sake of seeing Austin on big screen. Benny is merely a subject for everyone else to pursue and he wants nothing but freedom and feels nothing. Maybe he is just stunningly handsome but an empty dumb guy. He did not talk unless necessary and for most of time he stares the floor. The only time Austin acts with his sexy eyes is when he hits on Kathy at the beginning (all in the trailer already). Every character uses an interesting accent in this movie so I do not blame Tom Hardy on his but really I missed a lot of conversation due to their accent (English not my native language). Artistic cinematography as you suggested and good pace where moderate also realistic drama arises every 20 mins. but these are not enough to win the box office. No enough tension between gangster rivals, romance or bromance or actions that attract general audience. Not even enough racing of vintage motorcycles. At least they should ride a bit more. Jeff Nichols is a great director but next time he may hire someone else to write a better story.

      I have to strongly disagree that this is a bad movie. It's probably one of the best written movies in a while And probably because it's roughly based on a True story.
      It's an excellent film. I just got home from watching it, it's amazing. It's going to go down as a classic.
      One of the things that he complains about I don't agree with is that the the Midwestern accents are layered on quite a bit, but this is also a period piece and this is the type of way blue collar workers would have used 50 years ago but people are too self conscious about now, like a Joe Pecci accent.
      It's a good study in male friendship.
      The scenery is amazing. I live in Upstate New York and the houses look like they could be anywhere in Schenectady or Utica. It's rooted in Chicago, but it's a very rust belt story.

    *Spoilers*
    Movie felt like a wasted opportunity. Benny should have returned to challenge Johnny's rivals and earn back the Vandals loyalty. Johnny even mentions Benny being his successor but the film never delivers on this promise, nor does it deliver any real action or thrills. The last 10 minutes where they show the Vandals becoming a mafia style gang that murders their rivals execution style looked like the movie we should have gotten in the first place. There was so much potential to tell a story where Benny had to earn respect while defending the club's honor. Instead, the movie felt like a really cool, albeit very long, buildup to nothing.

    • @philipvecchio3292
      @philipvecchio3292 6 месяцев назад +12

      First, it was based on a true story.
      The ending was perfect. It was a guy who was going down a destructive path and his father figure died but it left Benny with the opportunity to find a new life and meaning.
      The knife fight where Johnny gets shot was a great example of the honor and the values of the Old guard being killed.
      Cockroach getting beaten up for saying that he wanted to become a police officer was also pivotal, but also the thing that showed Benny that maybe there's life outside of the club.
      This is a story of the guys who created something good, but as it grew it got out of hand and became too much for either of them.
      There's a lot of subtlety and good writing in this. This is a grounded Story based on real events. This isn't a superhero film, it's a different element of the hero's journey.
      For the guy who was willing to get beat up and almost lose his foot because he wouldn't take off his colors to leave the group when the nature of it changed was so bold.
      Johnny saying bye to his wife and then wanting to say bye to Benny we knew this was the end and he probably knowingly quietly went to his death. The old men showing up in cars rather than riding their bikes showed this was the end of an era. They sowed violence and reaped the Whirlwind.
      For somebody to be as violent as Benny was and get out alive believably was massive. Johnny asking him to take over the club, but he didn't want to showed subtly that he might have had some hesitation in the future of the club, but not in the guys he loved and when those guys were gone he had to move on.

Why he challenged Cathy by trying to get Benny to take over the club instead of respecting boundaries and what she wanted for her and Benny (and looked like he was going to kiss Benny for a minute). Then Johnny dies and he's the only one Benny cries for.

    Just saw it. What a massive disappointment. Jodie Comers voice was extremely grading as she narrates a male driven story from her hokey folksy perspective is ridiculous on its face inadvertently adding cringe humorous moments to the drama. Austin Butler served nothing but eye candy for the Kathy’s watching in the audience. Tom Hardy’s does what Tom Hardy does best making unique voices. This time he’s taken inspiration from Bugs Bunny.
    Many have compared this movie to Goodfellas. I can understand why. Both are period crime dramas where heavy narration drives a loose plot. However the characters and three acts are tighter in Goodfellas. You feel entertained through out as well watching Goodfellas. It embraces what it is fully excepting its masculine roots whereas Bikeriders feels as though there’s one foot in and one foot out abandoning the male perspective as the story is being told through a middle age woman’s perspective. How is that more interesting than if the story were narrated by Idk one of the bike riders? One can’t help but to imagine how much better a film Bikeriders would’ve been had the filmmakers chose not to pander to feminist Hollywood and instead delivered an honest story about men told by men. Not hard Hollyweird.
    If your in the mood to watch a film about masculine aggression during a certain period in America told through the perspective of a cringy Karen from Fargo than your in store for a treat. Despite its nearly 2 hour run time nothing really happens either. So sit back invite the girls pause when ever Austin Butler is on screen and you’ll have a hoot doncha know

    I want the ol' Adam haircut brought back. $12 buzz cut. Or is Adam too big for that now? Bigger than caring about the wing count at buffalo wild wings? Bigger than caring about toys having arms and legs that bend? Bigger than hating bikers? Now that is disappointing, sir.

    I thought the trailers spelled out exactly what this movie was: the whole thing narrated/told by Jodie Comer's character. But damn, the real shame sounds like the lack of actual bikeriding. 😅

    Jody Comer is a wonderful actress. However, based on the trailer, her Midwestern accent is horrible. Sounds like Austin Butler’s character suffers from the same issue as his character in “Masters of the Air”. In that he has no personality or development, aside from being too-cool-for-school.

    Being a woman in this lifestyle, I too have an amazing story to tell. This was a great movie. As an Executive producer who made a 1%er biker movie myself you cannot please anybody as a filmmaker. People all over cut every movie down and that's just the way it is. I thought accent was strong too...but she sounds exactly like the original woman. There is video footage of her on youtube. The dialects were different back then. I'm from Minnesota too. As an investor and filmmaker, I love that they humanized the characters. It's not full of mandatory wokeness and it shows club life which women live in too.

      It's based on the audiotapes of the actual person being interviewed for the book of the same name. Both the descriptions of the members and extreme whiny accent were copied for the film.
