    What's interesting about 1.16 is its by far one of the most "modded" feeling updates they've made, yet despite that the people who usually complain about newer updates feeling modded didn't seem bothered by it. Probably because it was just _so good_ and tied in perfectly with the game's pre-established mechanics, rather than being separate.

    • @lucasmatthiessen1570
      @lucasmatthiessen1570 4 месяца назад +415

      It didn’t feel that modded. The biomes kind of did. Mostly the warp forest. But the mobs felt like something Notch would have made. Like the strider. An adorable red square with only two legs.

      @EmperorPenguin1217 4 месяца назад +361

      1.16 is modded in the good way, as in vastly expanding the game with crazy concepts but being overall cohesive.
      1.19-20 on the other hand feel modded in the bad way, where the features have almost no cohesion at all and sometimes don't even fit the artstyle, such as sniffers and camels having jarring animations.

    • @MrBrineplays_
      @MrBrineplays_ 4 месяца назад +111

      @@EmperorPenguin1217Yeah. 1.16 felt more close to the original, properly expanding upon old mechanics and also being part of the main game. Newer updates felt dead and lacked connection. They could exist or not exist and the game would be no different. 1.17 and 1.18 had gameplay changes that I liked, but 1.19-1.20 felt empty. It's like their purpose is just to be decoration or less than that. If they were removed, nothing would change.

      @@EmperorPenguin1217 So true... the Sniffers and Camels have way too fancy animations. So does the Warden, but that's intentional to make it feel unsettling in comparison to normal mobs (kinda defeats the purpose if camels, sniffers, and frogs _also_ have fancy animations too).

      Minecraft 1.16 is not a real update. It's fake. It's literally a mod. The Nether has always had Pigmen, and the Nether never had basic materials like wood and real food, because it's a whole new dimension, a whole new challenge for the player.
      The End dimension doesn't even have real food or wood either. It's supposed to prepare you for the End.

    fireflies are so infuriating. If they're toxic to frogs, they can't have that interaction in game. Makes sense, actually it's good. 1. they’ve consistently promise a lot of things into 1 update, but then break it up
      2. the new biomes- i love the new biomes im just upset that they’re so rare to come across now, & how small they can be. i remember when the dark oak forest was added and it just brought life and it was pretty big. these new biomes are nice, they’re just so hard to come across & so tiny
      3. the mobs- i also like the new mobs it’s just the way they look and their movement. you can tell the difference of movement and the way they look between the horse and the camel. I wish if they were going to add new movement to mobs, they would either change older mobs movement as well or just leave it to look like older mobs movement

And their solution after players found 1.19 underwhelming was not to improve their update process and figure out what went wrong after 1.16, it was to barely announce anything at Minecraft Live to an extent so comical they stopped announcing the names of updates. And then 1.20 was somehow like a third the size of 1.19 with no theme at all and zero quality control or community input with the features. I don’t even know with them anymore

    Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. The commitment to a complete revamp of an encapsulated part of the game is part of what allowed them to really make it feel different - they had a vision and a specific in-game location to enact that. Combine this with the amount of charm and care they put forth, and the nether truly did become a unique place, with the sentiment of the update directly tied to that place. They haven't really been able to do this in the same way since. Great analysis!

    I think another way of describing the disjointed feel of more recent updates is that they are more for endgame players. Mojang has been focusing on tiny additions that most players will only interact with once they've gotten an elytra and good armor. The new updates add items or mobs that are more like collectibles rather than fun features to interact with. This is unlike the nether and caves updates (if 1.17, 18, and 19 were all in the same update) which would undeniably impact your game from the very beginning to the very end.

      I honestly dislike netherite for many things. It's annoying to get, with the new smithing templates it's nearly impossible to obtain on servers, it's not too powerful in survival, but at this same time totally breaks pvp, beacuse kb resistance prevents combos at all. It also made the diamond less iconic. While i love 1.16, the addition of netherite was imo a big mistake.

    • @krooton729
      @krooton729 4 месяца назад

      Netherite was not a mistake. It is completely optional and you absolutely do not need to expend the effort obtaining if you so choose. Smithing templates can also be replicated, which gives a significant use to diamonds beyond armor, tools, jukeboxes, beacon bases, and whatever else. I realize in a SMP where lots of players are carving out the world, there is an added layer of difficulty, but this is less of a game-design problem and more of a player-number problem. I also don't see the issue with diamonds being less iconic, but I also don't entirely feel the same way. I do wish there was more places and reason to do it like being used to get the treasure in a temple and finding weapon cosmetics (like Farcr's Vanity Mod and its addons) or proper artifacts like shulker powered hover boots or something wacky like that. 1.20's quality of life changes were also nice from the Creative menu being cleaned up to identifiable potions. I'd be happy for a smaller update like 1.15 with mainly quality of life like descriptions for Enchantments and Effects with just some new features (maybe some of the losing mob vote candidates to get on the community's good side). I know everyone wants the End Update but I agree with Mojang's approach to making it easier to reach the End before it's updated. One interesting point I heard on this from a different video (I don't remember who it was by) was that the nether update was the last update that Mojang had complete freedom to make. Microsoft may be more picky about the overworld since it resembles the real world, and that is why they had to remove things like fireflies, and Mojang could not go all out with crazy ideas in the overworld. Since the nether is a clearly fictional dimension, there is less pressure from Microsoft for it to be realistic or coherent with real-life animals and behaviours.

    Simple solution: finalize Minecraft 1 and begin making Minecraft 2. In Minecraft 2 mojang can be more experimental and change the game massively. Anyone who complains can still play MC1. This way they won’t be afraid to change the game too much and alienate old players. I want Minecraft 2 but I love playing Minecraft 1. It’s a good solution but not perfect. But still the best option

    1.16's main draw is how inspiring it is. When it got shown off at Minecon live, everyone started thinking of what direction Mojang could take the update, all the cool builds that they could make, and the awesome and unique environment that was being constructed. It was playstyle-defining. Starting with 1.17, updates have sorta just been slowly adding to the toolkit without really being that imaginative. I think what would really help the updates, at least for me, would be a better way of finding the new content. Minecraft worlds are so incredibly massive and empty that it can be very difficult to find new content even if it does get added. I remember launching the snapshot with the villager changes and going to a cartographer and he pointed me to a witch hut that was like 10k blocks away. I would really like it if structure frequency and biome sizes were added as customization options on the menu.

    We need an update that gave us the same wonder or excitement as the nether update. The deep dark made me go “oh sweet” check it out for around an hour and a half and log off to play somthing else. After that I don’t even think I have tried out anything new inside the new update because I just wasn’t interested in it. I just hope Minecraft can get back on their winning streak.

      That's the part that sucks about the new updates. They're one off stuff that you use for 2 minutes and then never use again. Like who in their right mind is gonna use wolf armor? The 2 people that actually use dogs? They actually thought of adding a mob who's SINGULAR purpose is to be used for another mob to be 0.000001% more useful. Its getting to the point of it being pathetic to watch

    Personally my favorite update was 1.14. While it did have a theme (village and pillage) many of the features added were spread throughout the game and weren’t directly related to villages. In my opinion it is an example of a “random features” update done right.

    • @ThighFish
      @ThighFish 3 месяца назад +1

      I guess it was both of those; it had a clear central theme but also many features of varying levels of disconnect from the theme. In fact, I’ve theorized that bees and related features were originally intended to be part of Village and Pillage before being pushed back to 1.15, which was previously planned to just be a technical update, similarly to how the original plan for Update Aquatic was for it to be 1.14 with 1.13 being a technical update.

    i used to be a minecraft player started from 2016 to 2018 (though i have completely stopped playing since 2022), mostly i played minecraft with my friends together when they visited my house, yes we enjoyed playing together even prior to or during first covid outbreak in my country 2020, downloading many different kinds of minecraft maps from mcpedl (we used tablet to play for easier control as i wasn't too familiar of playing on PC), doing survival, pvp, adventuring the world, etc... everything. i was introduced by my long-term friend who wanted me the most to play that sandbox game, prior to that i hadn't known what minecraft was. there hadn't any games that meant to be alternative minecraft replacement, and i have to be honest that i spent most of times of minecraft to invent, build something like giant house or school, and "reconstructing behavior/resource packs" (my favorite thing), playing minecraft with my friends we even spent a whole day too. i just couldn't believe myself that i used to have fun together with, at least until finishing my final grade of high school, and we were no longer together for living far place to attend university. i missed the nostalgic time so much, and old minecraft too.
    but sadly true, through many versions of minecraft starting from 1.16 (though it had started from other versions prior, earliest could be from 1.2 (released in Sep 2017, hence it changed the name from pocket edition to bedrock (???)), not only they are kind of boring and with so many complaints, and so that it makes me stop playing minecraft for long period, but i use that opportunity of boringness of minecraft to change my attitude of video gaming, hence i can have various alternative entertainments rather than games, not just minecraft, so that i feel much relaxed after studying at school, even more than old time. minecraft may no longer maintain the most played games in future, as these updates are... well you guess now 😕

You see depending on what biome you're for example: the soul sand valley or basalt deltas, it would feel like mobs would be spawning at an increased rate (i do not know whether it does or not) so it added more risk and made the nether fortresses more lively for a lack of better words.

    Another thing about 1.16 is that the update was very interactive with the community as snapshots were releasing. The community wanted a way to get gold in the nether, these thoughts were put online, and two weeks later we got nether gold ore. The community wanted a new structure in the nether, in fact most people wanted a “bastion” type structure, and we got the bastion remnants. We wanted another new biome and for basalt and blackstone to be more easily obtained in bulk, so we got the basalt delta biome, and basalt generators, and piglings bartered blackstone. We wanted a piglin type boss, and in 1.16.2 we got the piglin brute, and while it’s not a boss, it is basically a buffer piglin. I remember most people wanted a “Piglin Chief” to be a boss in bastions, and we got fairly close. Even small things like netherite hoes being a rare barter trade from Piglins, the community didn’t like it, so it was removed.

    Its funny, i remember that when 1.16 came out i was really close minded when it came to Minecraft, like i genuinely didn't want to play anything beyond 1.12 because I thought the newer updates made the game too different.
    Then i eventually got over that and saw that 1.16 alongside was probably the best update since 1.7, it fundamentally changed the game and not in the 1.9 "Mechanics" way, every world you make now will be fundamentally different because an entire dimension got an overhaul, the only thing i don't like is the removal of zombie pigmen, piglins and their zombie counterparts are cool and all but the Zombie Pigmen were classic. But that doesn't really bother me now since i use a texture pack to change them back.
    Really the only actual complaint i have is that nether fortresses didn't get updated, and while that was never promised i think they deserve an update with how easier Minecraft has become now. Nether Fortresses were always structures that at least for me, were defined by chaos. In older versions stepping into them felt like stepping into an endgame dungeon, especially when they generated over lava, the amount of mobs, Blazes shooting at you, wither skeletons popping out of nowhere, and the long corridors making for intese moments is what made them great for me. But since 1.14 Enchantment became so easy to get that its now more than likely that when you visit them, youre already going to be overpowered, whereas before it was more likely you'd explore them before getting full enchanted Diamond Armor, or netherite in this case. So an update that changed the structure to bring it closer to what it once was would've been nice, (hell they could always add the wildfire as a boss or something) but they didn't, which is fine because those structures are classic, but an update to them still would've been nice, but besides that, 1.16 was literally perfect.

  • @mooredaxon
    @mooredaxon 4 месяца назад +1

    Mojang can definitely choose to make another 1.16 level update, they just don't have the work ethic to. It's not like they make money off of updating a game most people already own. Thats why their events promote their other games more than the original game.
    That aside, I think one of the things that really helped the Nether update out was the fact that it involved something that players HAD to interact with. The nether is an integral part of the game, as it allows for quick transportation. 1.18 also benefitted from this, if it only had more features. Caving has always been a major part of Minecraft. 1.19, 1.20, and from what we've seen of 1.21, these are all things that players won't be required to interact with, which isn't inherently bad, but means that if you aren't actively seeking them out, you might as well play the previous version.
    Another thing that 1.16 benefitted from was the complete fantasy elements. Minecraft tries WAY to hard to be realistic. When I first played Minecraft, it was interesting to find out that mycelium, obsidian, and silverfish are all real things. Now I'm hard pressed to find something that isn't in real life. The ancient cities are personally my favorite Minecraft feature right now, and it benefits from the lack of connection to real life.
